I am new to the area so obviously had no mechanic here. I had an awesome one back in CLT and was hoping to find one just as honest and fair here. I have a BMW and the dealership is over an hour away (dont care for dealerships anyway) My car wouldnt start so we contacted Cliff's. He came out and towed it to his shop. Turns out it was the fuel pump. I was expecting a few hundred dollars in repairs, but to my surprise the bill was $715!! Not to mention that after it was repaired a few days later and I came to pick it up I was told that they didnt replace the fuel filter because the one they were going to use wasnt correct and it was a special order that was $85. I trusted this and went on my way. A short while later my car started to have a rough idle and sputter at stops. I went back and asked if them not changing the fuel filter could cause this and was told No. they checked the codes which were fuel related but said they didnt know what they were actually for, maybe we should do a tune up. (This had been done about 6 months ago so that shouldnt have been an issue. We went ahead and replaced spark plugs again ourselves. This didnt stop the issue. So I went back home to CLT and talked with my beloved mechanic. He was floored when I showed him the bill for my fuel pump replacement. The labor charge was almost half the bill, over $300. I said well isnt it a time consuming or difficult job being that its a BMW Im used to it. He said actually, this is one of the more simple repairs to a BMW. He showed me a video of it being done and it took approx10 minutes to complete!! You literally remove the back seat, unscrew the plate, remove the ring and hose on top of the pump and pull it out. Replacing in reverse order, no big deal at all. So I was rather disappointed to learn that I had been over charged for this job. Not sure how something so simple, that takes less than 20 min to complete would be over $300 in labor alone! Not to mention they didnt even replace the fuel filter which they said was special order (got it at Advanced Auto for $20) and guess what??? Once replaced, the idle regulated, no more sputter. And according to my mechanic, you ALWAYS change the filter when changing the pump. Just like an oil change, new filter each time.
So Ill say this... The people were very polite and personable, I was able to drive my car. However, I was way over charged and the job wasnt completed properly. I think I will have to drive my car back to CLT to have it serviced from now on and that is a shame.

Cliff's is the only mechanic shop to which I will take my car. The receptionist is candid about how long the wait will be, and I've actually pulled the owner aside to compliment him after I witnessed the receptionist be the epitome of patience and tact to a rude customer. The mechanic himself gives me feedback, the receptionist is kept in the loop in case I have further questions, and the owner is usually there. They have been informative and upfront about "levels" of repair for a problem - quick cheap fix that would have to be revisited, sufficient mid-cost repair, and top quality more expensive repair; and I have witnessed them suggest to a customer that the broken part was not necessary to the operation of his car, which ended up taking away a job they could make money on but was the honest thing to do and saved the customer money. They explain everything to me in a professional and sufficient manner, and have even taken me to the car on the lift to show me what they were talking about. I am a female, and I find the "treating women different than men" accusation to be a tired stereotype of most male-predominant fields typical of some who are quick to wear a selected personal characteristic as a badge of victimhood .....specifically to this case, in my presence the staff at Cliff's have been nothing but a professional, honest, effective mechanic service.

This is in response to Shirley P's review of Cliffs Car Care. I am the owner and have been for the past 30 years. We have been in this business in Swansboro for those 30 years and we bill customers only that have accounts with us. If Shirley P had received a bogus bill, as she has indicated, why did she pay it and why did she not contact our company for an explanation? Please write reviews, but please write the truth. If this is the truth, then we would like the opportunity to correct it. I would invite Shirley P to present the bill to us and give us a chance to discuss the wrongful
billing she is accusing us of. We would appreciate the opportunity to correct a mistake, as I am sure any one in business would before they are blasted on the internet.

I stopped by to get an estimate for a problem my regular garage could not do at this time. After they took it in the garage then made a few calls for parts; the mechanic handed me an estimate and I left. One week later I received a bill for 25.00. They were not up front with me that there would be any fees involved. I would have paid them that day. I later went to Sutton's garage, where I got satisfaction and up front information on what my car needed.
I would warn fellow car owners that you need to watch your back when dealing with Cliff's. I have learned my lesson after paying $25.00. The service at Sutton's was by far better and much clearer.
There are other garages then Cliff's and I would strongly suggest using someone else. They are shady in their business tactics.
Thank you for allowing me to express my disappointment.

I agree with anonymous. Multiple trips to get work done. Then more multiple trips to fix what was supposed to be fixed in the first place. They treat women as though they know nothing. They do not call to check if things are ok to proceed. They can NEVER provide an upfront price. The price always changes. I would recommend you try another garage.

I don't know "Anonymous" but they posted a review and they lie like a rug. For the last ten years Cliff's has serviced my many vehicles. He has always informed me when the price would be higher, actually he has given me options according to costs on repairing many of the things wrong with my vehicles. He has always called me when my vehicles were ready and his hours are posted. If you can't get there on time then YOU, Anonymous, have time management problems. I think the employees are trustworthy and honest.

I have been taking my car to Cliffs for about ten years. What I have found is that the work is not always dependable. Sometimes the work is done carefully and sometimes I have to go back several times and "be ugly" in order to get things done.
Prices are NOT low.
Women are NOT treated the same as men.
Sometimes the person behind the counter is short-tempered.
They do not notify if things are going to cost more.
They do not call when the car is ready.
They do not stay open late for car pick-ups and do not open early in the morning (not open until after 7).

I've been to Cliff's Garage a few times and each time the service was superb! He is very frienldy and his Garage is very clean. His prices are very reasonable and he is honest and trustworthy. He has the best prices in town and will go out of his way to help you out. His sign says "the best place to take a leak!" I agree with that statement 100%. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone.

PROS: honest, reasonably priced
CONS:
