Really, I don't see much difference concerning this chain and the two major non-coop competitors in Asheville. The Fresh Market does offer organic produce in bags instead of PET--soda-bottle recycle plastic or PLA (compostable) clamshell containers (the latter containers aren't recyclable in Asheville, anyway--go figure). I saved a couple of bucks. (The bag produce is small and won't last long.)

Really, the "Fresh Market" and their like-minded "hoity-toity" competitors do offer the same pesticide/herbicide-laden raw produce that other grocers do. What's the point in paying more, after all?: It's an expensive convenience, of course.

The companies do offer more organics--though traditional grocers nowadays aren't total strangers to organics anymore. Nonetheless, these boutique-quality places are more appropriate for those who which to avoid chemical-laden and over-processed foods--they offer more organics--in all food-types--as well as decent alternatives to traditional, dumb processed foods..

Hate to burst your bubble, but TFM started in Greensboro, Nc (that's where stores 1 and 9 are located.) After working at a Greensboro location in a management position, I hate to report that almost EVERYTHING comes in frozen. The bakery literally only makes one item: lemon bars. You don't even want to know what goes on in the deli. Always was hard to remember which foods to set out to thaw overnight. As far as the company goes? I worked 60 hour weeks including some 18 hour days when I was 18 years old. If you want to know the real Fresh Market, here are a few words: appearances, no human resources, nepotism, politics, and for many of you customers, elitism. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me to pick the grapes out of his or her chicken salad or go to the back and open up a new container of pimento cheese just for them, I could have quit after 3 days. Maybe then I wouldn't have broken my nose or gotten a concussion from the shoddily built storage in the back. Thanks for drug testing me both times... then not letting me go home.

Word to the wise: don't support a corporation that treats its employees like dirt. Also, don't mess with people deal with your food.

Ray Berry and his wife were the founders of this quaint gem. I believe the original operation began in Durham, NC and has expanded throughout the Carolina regions and possibly beyond.I myself for a very short term was an employee of the business while living in the Cameron Village area of Raleigh. I since have revisited the Store in Asheville again recently in concern of the ever growing Health Food Market in this area. I feared they would be pushed out. I was delighted to be reminded that though all their ingredients may not be of some certifiably organic nature the quality, superiority, freshness and the price I think will keep this market just as viable as it has always been before these new terminologies began coming to the forefront. The selection is unmatched. The freshness from the deli, to the meat & seafood counter is impeccable. The inventory of almost exotic candies, wines and baked goods is without question and the produce as well as Floral is not only a spirit lifter but a feast for all.I often visit on my down days to get a lift from all there is to taste, see and experience. Whether it be a dinner party, a intimate evening or a special gourmet meal this is your one stop choice without all the networking and Spiritual conversion you may find in your health food environment. I was also told upon a recent visit that the bakery may possibly be widening its already unmatched selection in bake goods and masterpiece deserts to include birthday confections as well.

Weight Watchers shoppers this is a sure bet for your fresh lean quality cut meats and service oriented Butchers and Sellers to help you understand the fats, leans and the like. I love the Turkey Sausage which is fresh ground from lean cuts of Turkey . All items are weighed and package to specification. No prepackaged meats here
Cheese and Wine lovers will also find their needs met in this facility. Enjoy a sample cup of fresh ground imported coffees from various region of the world as you shop. Ambiance is impeccable!
Samples upon request!
ENJOY!!!! and Bon -Appetit!!!!

If you are looking for organic foods, or unusual items this place is great. They have an increadable meat department with a great selection of top cuts. The prices are high compared to a regular grocery store, but it is nice for specialty items that you can't find at the regular stores
