Went and got my ruby appraised and sure enough its filled with glass. They basically bought a ruby whole sale and convinced me that they cut it but its only worth $20. I called Ruby and Gold Mine in Cherokee and told them that I had it looked at and its filled with glass and I got a ear full. They said send them the paperwork on the appraisal to prove it (thats gonna cost me another $100 and they expect that you wont do it). I told them if I do that then I will have to proceed legally to try and get everything I put in it back and then I heard nothing but shouting that they dont take threats.. on and on.. So i will apparently need to find a lawyer and see if I have any grounds to get my money back. They lied to me that they cut it in house.. not possible with glass in it.. then they lied that its worth $1200 both before I paid for it to be cut and after.. then they lied that "they are cutting the rock that i found" for $85 per carat. So their business is based on lies. Found out they just chuck the rock back in the bucket of dirt for the next sucker. How can this business be open after all this time? My foundation of proceeding with the deal was that no business could be open that long if they are just scam artist.. Wrong..

This is a great fun activity for the kids. We went this past summer while on vacation. I have fond memories of doing this as a child with my sister. I even purchased and bag and screen to give to my sister as a gift since she wasn't with us. My niece had a ring made from one of the gems she found. There are staff on hand to identify your gems. Very willing just to identify, not pushy when it comes to additional purchases. We have been to this location several times and they have always been friendly and helpful.

We spent $40 on two buckets of dirt. While it was fun for 5 minutes looking for jewels, after the sifting was over we were left with a pile of ugly looking rocks. You have to pay a lot more to crack them open and turn them into jewelry. I would only do this again if I had a little kid and I would do one of the cheapest buckets.

If you don't like getting dirty this isn't the place for you. But if you like to get your hands in the water and dirt and search for jewels and gems, this is a great place for you. But those who don't like to get dirty will still have fun in the gift shop. You can even have the jewels you found set into jewelry. The staff is also very friendly there and offers tips and suggestions to make your experience even more fun. From personal experience the more expense the bucket or dirt you buy the jewels you get.
