I've used this company before with pretty decent results, but was shocked by our most recent experience. I sent in our trooper after my wife noticed the temp gauge was through the roof. I told them I was worried that the engine was damaged and I was ready to scrap the car completely. They said, no, it's just the radiator- so I trusted them and spend $550 fixing the radiator. Now, after the radiator is done, you guessed it- the engine has at least $1800 of damage that needs to be replaced. They, of course, explained that they needed to fix the radiator first before they even checked the engine- but this was not even expressed to me even though I warned them that I think the car should likely be junked. Just know, if you use them, YOU take all the risk in a repair- and if THEY are wrong you are screwed.

Great honest shop. I have started to take all my vehicles to Smiths in the last year. Most recently I had a car with a common issue for that brand. I know what was involved int he repair and Smiths was very honest and fair in the price. They have yet to let me down and I will continue to take my vehicles and my company vehicles to them.

On 7/8/2010 my husbands 1989 F-150 would not start after he had been at the Idelwilde park for two hours. He walked home and called this company after talking to our neighbor who frequents them. The towed the truck the next day to the shop and instead of replacing the ignition rod again (this would have been the 4th time it had been done), they found that there was a connector pin missing and after doing that the truck has run fine. I will return to them as they charged us a fair price and were fair in the way they checked the trucks reported problem.
In fact I will even start taking my 2001 Windstar there for repairs/maintenance as I now know they are truful and reliable.

I had a problem with my '03 Saturn Ion this week. Drove it work and it wouldn't start about two hours later. Tried to jump it and nothing. I called Smith's because they are just around the corner from my office and walking distance from my apartment. They towed the car.
I talked to them the next morning. Apparently, when they got my car off the tow truck it started fine. The ran every test on the battery, alternator and starter they could think of. They checked every electrical connection they could reach without opening the car like a tin can.
The mechanic, David, even drove my car home so he could try to start it at the coldest point in the night. It started fine.
They only charged me for the tow and half an hour of labor. I know it must have taken longer than that to do all that stuff. They made some excellent recommendations of what to do if it won't start again and to call them immediately so they can walk me through what to do.
A less reputable mechanic could have replaced the battery, alternator and starter and I wouldn't have thought anything was wrong with that. Instead this shop was very honest and worked hard to resolve my issue so I wasn't left stranded somewhere. Even though they didn't find any issues, I feel better knowing that those components on my car are working properly.
I will take my car here again and would recommend them to friends.

This shop ripped me off - they did not fix my car right.

With the economy right now?this is our second car for my wife to go back and forth for work.

1300 miles ago and less than 2 months my SUV broke - have it fixed by mechanic with close to $900 bill for timing belt, tensioner, rad refill and spark plugs. it died on my wife again while driving - I was told my same mechanic that it needs to open the left cylinder head valve cover to explore charging me for another $150 for it. To replace with a used cylinder head valve cover if ever would cost me $1100 part and labor.

By the way mileage of the SUV is around 170K and in three years of ownership had put in around $7500.

The shop is bleeding me for more money where he is supposed to fix the car the first time - he claims that when he cranks the car manually it will not rotate and this is the reason why the belt is jumping off the track.

I am thinking of refering them to NC small claim court.

Business Response:

David Smith This claim was sent to the BBB and after an investigation we were exonerated. When the vehicle was first towed to us the camshaft pulley was tested and it turned over freely. This led our mechanic to diagnose the timing belt tensioner. 1300 miles later it had similar symptoms, we tested the camshaft pulley again because the timing belt tensioner had just been replaced. It spun freely again, since the tensioner had recently been replaced the mechanic continued to test the camshaft pulley. We continued to test the pulley and the 8th time instead of spinning freely it locked up. Testing the camshaft pulley that many times is unusual. We could set the time but when the camshaft gets hot it will jump time again. Ms Montesclaros came by our facility and I showed the working parts on the vehicle so she could better understand the diagnosis. If Mr. Montesclaros takes our inital invoice and this response to another mechanic, he will find that Smith's is telling the truth no matter how difficult it is for him to understand. We are a family owned business that has been in this industry for 25 years. Unfortunately this review is an uneducated viewpoint without research.
