Love this place! They have a great variety of breakfast foods & all the plates have lots of options for sides. Prices are good, & now that they accept credit/debit cards, there's nothing to complain about! We've always had great attentive

Not friendly to families. If you come here with kids you'll get bewildered stares, and ultimately you'll not be able to sit together as family. We were treated as if we were a bother on a day that wasn't even busy.

They have yummy yummy waffles (imagine that)--it was so busy, but we had great service with a smile, and they were super sweet to my toddler who at the time wasn't into sitting and eating quietly!

I think the "overrated" reviewer must be stuck in a time warp, because places like this barely exist anymore in the advent of chains. If you think it's overpriced, you must eat beans out of a can under a bridge for breakfast - given that I'm originally from Boston, this is dirt cheap by comparison, and easily 10x better than anything I had in that area.

Pros: great grub, great service

Cons: gets crowded fast

I went to this establishment because of what I heard on the street. This place thrives on word of mouth, which I would consider "rumors" or "myths" from people who have heard it from others and never actually eaten at this establishment.

Food was over priced and dried. I do not recommend to anyone unless they asked about this place. All I remembered food was terrible and over priced.

I would never go there again with their flavorless food, small portions, and slow service. I guess it's a hip place to go, but hip doesn't usually mean good. Give me big portions, cheaper food.

Great traditional diner food in a traditional diner atmosphere. This place isn't necessarily creative or gourmet, but if you're in the mood for fresh coffee and a good breakfast menu, this is the place. Several omelets to chose from that were not overly cheesy. Biscuits ok. John's hash browns were a nice side, but would have been better if they weren't originally frozen. We'll go again. Next time I'll try the shortcakes or waffles.

Ye Olde is one of the first places I take friends and family who come to visit in Chapel Hill. It has a ton of character (always decorated at holidays, employees in impressive costumes at halloween) and unbeatable food and prices. The line can be intimidating, but I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes, even on weekends. I especially recommend the Apple Cinnamon Waffles. Don't forget that it's cash only, but if you are stuck, there's three ATMs within the same block.

This place rocks. Best basic breakfast in town.

That said, it could be better in a few ways. The hashbrowns are frozen shredded type, not fresh. The fruit used for waffles and pancakes are canned or frozen. Pepsi, no Coke.

The place is 100% consistant, friendly, and good. I wish a few tweaks would be made to make it excellent, such as Merritts bacon, and the things mentioned already.

I have a few places throughout the country I love, and wish this place was as good. BUT, it's the best in town, period!

Love this waffle shop! Never have purchased the waffles, but it's a great breakfast joint. The price is good, the atmosphere is just what you'd want. Feels like a grand ol' ma-and-pa joint. Limited seating.

Pros: Price, yummy food.

Cons: Limited seating, coffee isn't the best. (Bring your own cup from Caribou or Starbucks down the street)

This place is nothing fancy, but it's perfect for hungry college students who are looking for large portions at reasonable prices. Their cheese grits are fabulous and their waffles and omelettes are light and fluffy. As with other areas on Franklin Street, there is very little parking.

My wife and I retired in Chapel Hill and we eat heat at this diner frequently. We eat breakfast out nearly every day, so we have a lot to compare it to. Bacon and eggs are excellent, so are the waffles and pancakes. I've seen lines outside on the sidewalk on weekends, but there's always a seat during the week. It's one of my favorite diners anywhere. If you're looking for a good, fast, inexpensive meal with a college campus atmosphere, you'll enjoy Ye Olde. As for the reviewer who got bad service, it happens-- I've paid $200 for dinner in other cities and gotten poor service. It hasn't happend to me at YOWH, but it might someday.

Ye Olde Waffle Shop is a small, cafeteria-style restaurant that specializes in serving breakfast all day long. I am a fan of going in for Sunday brunch, and ordering waffles, hash browns, some fruit and a glass of OJ. The waffles are soft, and fluffy and exactly the way they should be made. Be prepared to eat as the servings are big.

PROS: Great food at inexpensive prices
CONS:

We chose this place because it had a good rating and nice reviews. BUT... it was terrible. We were a party of 8 people. When we ordered, it took them more than 40 minutes to bring us our food and the quality was definitely below the average (waffles were not crispy, in pecan waffles there was no sign of pecans, omelets were so-so and everything was hardly warm). The waiter was slow and sometimes didn't pay attention to our table. This is certainly NOT the place we are going to come back.

Having come to Chapel Hill from the New York/New Jersey area aka the Land of Diners, this place has easily replaced if not surpassed the need for good breakfast food. This cozy shop offers the best waffles in town, good coffee, great omelettes and the friendliest service. My husband and I have gone often enough it's like going into Cheers when we go in--everybody knows our name. Get there before 10:30 am on weekends, though, or you will wait for a table!

I drive 20 miles from Raleigh to eat at Ye Olde Waffle Shop. It is the only place in the Triangle to eat breakfast.

nowhere can you get two pancakes, eggs and bacon under $5 anymore... here you can, with a side of some of the more friendly people I've met. They always greet their customers as you walk in the door, and make sure everything is alright during and after you're done eating.

In three words: Big Jim's Hashbrowns. What better staple to help you through a rough morning after pulling an all-nighter. A meal in itself, hashbrowns grilled with onions, peppers, mushrooms and cheese (optional). Of course, the home-made pancakes and waffles are great too. The wait can be lengthy, but it is worth it!!!

Since the Porthole closed, 4 Corners has become a trendy place with a number on it and Spanky's no longer has a Sunday Brunch with a 4 egg omelet on it; this is the only place in Chapel Hill that's still the same. (Even the basketball team had a loosing season)

Almost every two weeks a co-worker and I go to Ye Old Waffle Shop. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the staff is very friendly, especially the cooks, who offer stimulating conversation to those seated at the counter. I recommend this place to anybody who likes great breakfast food.
