If you're looking for a REAL bakery, then look no further. This authentic European bakery is amazing! Everything tastes so good, is made fresh daily, and the price is just right. I recommend trying the elephant ear - YUM!

I don't know how the food is in their cafe. It was jammed packed so we weren't able to try it. That's the only bad thing about this place. Always packed and very small parking lot.

The food is wonderful. I wish they would hurry up and open for dinner, but it looks like that might be a ways off. I love to go in for Brotchen - it's just like what I remember from living in Germany as a child. They have great seafood risotto, too! If you can get in there when they have wurst on special, don't miss it! Also, the cucumber salad is authentic - and yummy. Everyone who works there is always very nice and helpful. No complaints there. My only gripe is that sometimes it's so popular that it takes a minute to find a place to park! Not the worst thing to have to complain about!

Guglhupf's bakery is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Gorgeous pastries, tempting breads, and tasty bretzels. \r

If you can, go early in the day, by late afternoon, the selection is often very small, especially on Sundays

Pros: super tasty food, made by people who care

Cons: sometimes difficult to get a seat, can be crowded when it's nice outside, inside seating is loud.

I cannot say enough good things about Guglhupf. Their breakfasts are great and so are their lunches. I don't even know where to start with the bakery items. I'm not a huge fan of pastries or breads, but when I walk in there, I can't help myself. I want to try one of everything. It's a great atmosphere and a beautiful space for lunch with some friends or colleagues. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Delicious food!

Cons: Somewhat confusing ordering/cashier line.

Guglhupf is probably the best place to get freshly baked bread in town. There selections of breads is very impressive and they carry a variety that is sure to satisfy the most picky of shoppers. I've not ever gotten any kind of bread there which I did not think was very delicious. They also have a number of tasty sweets, although I wish they had more chocolate.

Now the cafe, that is another story. The food there was surprisingly bad. Of course the bread for the sandwich was good but the rest of the sandwich was cold and seemed stale. It almost tasted like fast food and I would have expected a lot more from a bakery with the standard of Guglhupf.

So I would give the bakery itself a five star and would give the cafe a two star.

I first found out about this place from a German woman I met at a gathering. This place is awesome. The pastries and breads are home made and baked in ovens from German at least that's what I was told. They also have a resturant next door to the bakery that serves breakfast and lunch. Very unique cuisine as well as German favorites.

I am new to the area and was really excited to try this place because I love good European style breads. I admit I am a total bread snob and I look for the best bakery everywhere I go. I thought Guglhupf was disappointing. I first tried a baguette and a croissant, thinking those should be good basic representations. The baguette was too fluffy - nothing special at all. The croissant tasted good, but was really greasy. Then, I figured, it's a German bakery, so why was I getting French stuff? So I went back and got brezels and rolls. Eh. Still not that exciting. It's a cute place, with a nice outdoor area, and maybe the food and pastries are good, but to me a good European style bakery's got to have a great baguette. Still searching....

We love to have breakfast here. Come for a leisurely patio meal and read your paper over sumptious fruit tarts, fresh baked earthy, dense breads, and a delicious cup of coffee. Come early because the only negative about this delightful place is that all of the goodies run start running out by lunchtime!

After spending two years living in Germany it didn't take me long to start searching for a European bakery once I moved back to the Triangle. This place is awesome and takes me back to Europe with every taste. Everything is made fresh every morning, so it is best to arrive early before the selection is gone. Try it once and you will become a repeat customer.

Guglhupf is a very unique place. The bakery is excellent, especially the bretzels. The restaurant part is nice also. My favorite thing is soup with a bretzel. I haven't tried their made to order pies or cakes, but I hear they are just as delicious as the rest of the food!

...That I insist on bringing out of towners. This is one of them. The pastries are immaculate. To be honest, I'm not as huge a fan of the breads (though their denser, whole grain varieties are very good). The service can be painfully slow at times, but that's about it. Don't fault them, as someone below did, for the fact that their clientelle is "snooty". They're only guilty of making really good pastries.

After walking into the bakery I knew I was in for a great experience. The first time I went I bought a dozen different delicious treats and was happy with each and every one of them. So, when the time came for me to pick out a wedding cake they were at the top of my list. The wedding cake was a little untraditional, but the best wedding cake I have ever had. The price a lot cheaper then traditional cakes as well! I couldn't have been happier!

We had been huge fans of Guglhupf until we ordered in advance. Twice, our orders were lost or forgotten. The first time, the item we ordered was in stock so it was no big deal. The second time, my wife's birthday cake simply wasn't made and the bakers had gone home for the day. Bad news! The third time, the cake we ordered tasted 3 days old. I'm sure it was delicious when it was fresh, but it was no better than the stale baked goods at Whole Foods.

Cons: Advance orders, Organization, Service

The man who always seems to be there when I've bought pastries has always been right on the money with his recommendations. Try the fruit tarts-they are fabulous. Definitely the best pastries in the triangle and worth the trip from Wake Forest.

Once you finally find Guglhupf you'll never forget where it is! It's "hidden" off 15-501, and there is not much if any of a sit down atmosphere until the finish the outside cafe area. Try a variety of breads and pastries...you can't go wrong. I recommend the bretzels...yum!

Cons: , Tiny space, Hard to find

Great for the pretentious and there seems to be a lot of them buying at this place, just walk by a few of them when you visit. I though this would be different than the Chapel Hill folks. Not hardly. Just the same type who go to Fosters and Nana's.
Service is terrible and pastries are a joke"Oily" and tough. Breads are OK.

Quite possibly the best pastries and breads this side of the Atlantic. The ciabatta with Kalamata olives is out of this world, and the croissants melt in your mouth. I have been consistently impressed with the quality and selection. I'm new to the Triangle area and was happy to find a slice of Europe so close to home....especially when that "slice" is from a fresh-baked baguette!

WOW!!! THIS PLACE IS THE BEST! WE USED THEM FOR OUR WEDDING CAKE(S) AND WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. MY HUSBAND FOUND THIS PLACE AND SAYS IT IS JUST LIKE HIS GRANDMOTHER USE TO MAKE (SHE WAS FROM GERMANY). GIVE IT A TRY - YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

This premier German bakery has the freshest, most delicious pastries and breads in the Triangle. The staff is friendly and hospitable. This is North Carolina's best-kept secret...but perhaps not for long, as work is underway on a full sit-down cafe. Don't be fooled by tasteless so-called "artisan breads" at your local chain grocery store. This is the real thing!

..until you've had European-style baked goods. At least that was true for me. Until I traveled to Germany years ago, I had no idea what breads and pastries could be. Guglhupf creates incredible sweet pastries. The danish twist is my favorite, but I also love the interesting combinations of sweet, soft cheeses and fruits (kiwi even)! The croissants are exquisite - though a little too buttery (if that's possible) sometimes. Other breads are hearty, fresh, and melt in your mouth. **UPDATE - as of 8/26/02 they are adding on to the building. Prob. for inside seating!
