We owe our success in no small way to the unique individuals that work here now and the people that preceded them. Open Mon-Sat, closed Sun with the exceptions of private parties. The Skinny
Often called Al Mike's or A.M.'s, this bar has a supremely comfortable feel, both inside and out. Dark wood paneling throughout lends a warm, worn feeling. Locals and folks from all over town gather here each afternoon to soak up the relaxed atmosphere and work off job-related stress. Sitting at the corner of Ninth and Pine in Fourth Ward, the view in front of Alexander Michael's looks like it belongs in another city. If there were more shops or restaurants around, you might think you were standing on a quiet corner in Charleston or Georgetown. Do yourself a favor and take a walk through the neighborhood while you're here.

The Goods
The rich atmosphere is augmented by an excellent beer selection, including imports, domestics and microbrews. The food is standard pub fare, but it's well prepared, well seasoned and well presented.

Key Points

  • Fresh, well prepared food
  • Great beer selection
  • 100% Smoke Free Atmosphere

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - With a long bar along one side of the building, booths along the other and tables in between, seating space is maximized, so even when A.M.'s gets crowded, it's still comfortable.

Love it!

by Meagan A.

I love Alexander Michael's! My favorites are the spicy crab soup (I always get a cup of it) and the 'What it is' (it's a pasta dish). Both are delish. I really enjoy the atmosphere both location wise--it is in the middle of 4th ward, an older neighborhood in downtown, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant--kind of like a neighborhood pub. I will say that I don't think of it as being child friendly, but that may be just me.

Great Little Neighborhood Restaurant

by Sakira C. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,296

If you are looking for a great little restaurant with a small town feel, Alexander Micheal's is the place for you. They have the best and biggest hamburgers and their onion rings are divine. They are pretty busy around lunch time but if you get in there shortly before or after the rush, you will be served quickly and with a smile.

FRIED PICKLES!!!

by Casey C. | insider Insider | Rank: 20,076

Alexander Micheals was the first place I discovered how wonderful fried pickles are! They are great! It is also a very nice romantic atmosphere, can get a little crowded though as it is very popular in the neighborhood. There was a book written about haunted places in charlotte and Alexander Michaels was included...since it is in an old old house I'm not surprised! We love it!

The perfect neighborhood restaurant/bar!

by Jennifer W. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,443

Nothing captures the feel of the Fourth Ward district like Alexander Michael's restaurant and bar. The food is outstanding (the spicy crab soup is addicting!) and the dark wood and dimly-lit bar seems to take you back in time. Alexander Michael's is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or meeting friends for drinks.

Pros: Great food, perfect ambiance, good service
Cons: Parking can be tough to find

Great atmosphere and food

by Stacy8687

My girlfriends and I frequently meet up here for a girl night dinner because of the atmosphere. It's just very quaint and just a place that you want to hangout out in for a while. My favorite it the honey chicken and I also love the fried pickles. The last time we went, we ended up staying for hours and drinking wine. The people who work there are very nice too and make you feel comfortable. Would recommend to anyone.

Pros: Great atmosphere

Great low-key bar with excellent food!

by adrizzle

This is a great unpretentious place to just grab a bite and have a drink or two. Dimly lit bar with a relaxed atmosphere. The potato wedges and quesadillas are great, as well as the sandwiches and pasta dishes. If you want super-friendly service, go elsewhere. This place is about function, not form.

Great local pub

by emstubbs

We just went to Alexander Michael's for the first time and loved it! After reading the reviews, we decided to try it out. The owner greeted us at the door- it wasn't crowded for a Saturday night. We ordered the nachos based on the reviews- and they were great, it seems they used homemade chips. Then I had the chicken pita and my boyfriend ordered the london broil sandwich. They were both great! The waitress was very friendly and welcoming. I don't know why that one man had a problem- I think he has this place confused, because there was no hostess- or even a hostess stand. This was a great experience, I would recommend it to anyone- young and old!

Pros: great food great service cozy atmosphere

Cons: hard to find- local spot

Charlotte's Best Kept Secret

by davede11

This is one of if not the only bar in Charlotte that I've found that has "Warsteiner" beer on draught. The food is excellent & the service has always been good. It's a bit small, but gives it that "warm" neighborhood bar feel. I Honestly think it'd take away from it's charm if they were to expand the building size. Perfect the way it is! Check out their dish called "What It Is". A GREAT spicy pasta dish that I get just about everytime I go there.

Great place for dinner and relaxed atmosphere

by jdunk

I went to this restaurant on a Monday night. We ordered an appetizer.. a cup of spicy crab soup.. it was so delicious. I definitely recommend trying this! We then had a couple drinks and ordered the shrimp marsala.. which was also delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and very friendly. We had the brownie for dessert, which wasn't as great as the rest of our meal.. it tasted more like fudge, but if you like fudge then you would probably like the brownie. Overall, this was a very pleasant experience and I will definitely be returning.

Pros: Spicy crab soup and relaxed atomosphere

Cons: The brownie

Terrible Service, Bartender is rude

by Milovy

We had a reservation and according to the host, they were 30-45 min behind in service. He told us we could go to the bar and have a drink ON THE HOUSE for having to wait. We all ordered a beer or glass of wine and when we were seated, the waitress asked who had which drink to add to our tab. We explained what the host told us and she replied rudely "No he would never do that" She got the bartender who started to tell us that we all must have selective hearing. We asked for the host to come over and we asked him directly, did he not offer us a drink on the house? He wouldn't look us in the eye and said no he didn't then scurried off. We all were shocked! My friend told the bartender and waitress that we could totally afford our own drinks, that wasn't the issue. We were being treated poorly for a mistake their staff made. The bartender and waitress then said some other very rude things to us about our "selective hearing" and that it must be a misunderstanding on our part. We decided to pay for the drinks and leave. As we were leaving the bartender stood at the door with his arms crossed, glaring at us like we were common criminals. I have never been treated so poorly in my life at an establishment. The other patrons around us even commented that they were 100% in the wrong. So terrible service, lying hosts and rude bartenders. I would never go back there.

Pros: None

Cons: Rude service

Alexander Michaels

by lynnweis

A Cheers place with great food in a Victorian neighborhood in the middle of Uptown Charlotte. Non smoking and great for a date. This is not a burger joint, even though they've got a good one. TVs are on mute and the recorded music crosses all spectrums.

Pros: great bar tenders

Cons: not open on Sunday

Great Choice, Especially If You're A Non-Smoker

by dmfrescatore

AM's in the 4th Ward has great atmosphere and good food. The service was fine as well during my visit.

What's really appealing, for me personally, is the fact that smoking is not allowed during normal dining hours.

It's high time The State Of NC place an out right ban on smoking in public bars and restaurants but until they do, hanging out at a place like Alexander Michaels will work for me.

burgers are huge !!!!!

by uncletony1

Every time I visit Charlotte to see my family (Fort Mill, SC), since the early 90's, I have stopped by this restaurant and have always been happy with the service and quality of the food .
Even when I would stop by alone, I would be greeted like a king!
I especially loved the unique atmosphere set in a historic section, I can not recommend this restaurant enough...please go and try !!!
My favorite spot is the front bay window table...can't wait for my next visit to stop by !

Amazing Nachos!!

by beepie

Alexander Michael's definitely makes the best nachos I have ever had. If you're feeling generous you can order them as an appetizer to share, but after that first bite, you will want them all to yourself!!!

Alex Michael's

by esmiles

SOOOO ideal for a first date:

--The neighborhood is so dear that you already feel warm and cozy before you've stepped foot indoors.
--And it not too quiet nor too loud for those quiet types struggling to keep the conversation movin.' It's JUST right.

...OR your 40th date:

--A true "neighborhood bar" where a first name basis is a promise if you keep up on your end of the deal.

Great 1st Impression!

by stefam

I was very impressed with the atmosphere and service. It was dark, comfortable, and laid back. Each table was romantically candle lit. The food was pretty good. It was packed, but it only took 10 minutes for a table to open. Free public parking is right around the corner.
