I will say this... coming from being a 3 year volunteer! There has been a HUGE change with the shelter since I 1st started! Much of the public has no idea about. Unless you are there on a regular basis you have no right to place judgement or point fingers. You have no idea what goes on behind those doors you enter through. Do you number of animals we saved by sending them to rescue or non kill sheltesr in just 1 year ( over 245), the number of dogs we pulled from hoarding cases or labs that have been closed in other counties or animals from shelters that were high kill and very adoptable dogs but out of time? Once a dog gets tested for heart worms they are given a monthly preventative to keep them free of heart worms. Dogs with kennel cough are being treated as well as other sickness with the cats too intead of euthanizing. The staff has all the right intentions and need more support from the public as well as the backing from their "board members". If you have anything negative to say...go out an volunteer for 1 week for several hours a day and I think your negative thinking will change. Candace has been the ringleader of the changes and her staff and volunteers have helped her to enforce the positive changes. It is hard to do this alone and with help so I challenge you to go out and volunteer, make donations of needed supplies, and make a difference in your communities Animal Shelter...it's rewarding and very beneficial to the animals. Keep up the good work CCHS!!!!

I am amazed at the staff at the CCHS. I honestly don't know how they do it. It's difficult to see the animals waiting to have a forever home, HOWEVER, it warms my heart to see how much the staff truly loves them. It takes a special kind of person to work with animals and we should be encouraging and supportive, not judgmental.
Please adopt from your local shelter and don't go for a "designer dog." Mutts need love too and it's a fact that they are smarter, have a better disposition and fewer health problems than purebreds.
In response to the gentleman who stated the staff was unfriendly, I have had the opposite experience from the staff there. I visited just today and Sarah spent 20-30 minutes with me and I appreciated her time. As Rose said, don't complain and do nothing, MAKE IT BETTER. It's about the animals, not us.

All I got to say is... If you see something that needs improvement... jump in and make it happen! This community doesn't quite get it that the Carteret County Humane Society belongs to EVERYONE!! It's our place... our animals... and our responsiblity to see to it that it's the way we want it! Sure I'd love to make many improvements, but guess what? Instead of just wanting or talking about it... I'm actually doing it! :-) I know I'm making a difference to try to improve... are you? :-) The staff doesn't need to be criticized. It's a tough job... most of the community can't even stand to watch those sad ASPCA commercials on TV! You should try dealing with that in person on a daily basis! And yes... the bad and the ugly are here among us in Carteret County just like they show on TV. So... basically, this is my challenge to the community! Find something... anything wrong with the shelter and FIX IT! :-) Make a difference!

The staff here have a tough job. so what if they look down or grumpy sometimes.. look what they deal with every day, people turning in their pets for stupid reasons, or dropping off innocent puppies without a word left in a box by the front door, these workers have hearts of gold at this shelter, ALL the animals get attention every day, the dogs are takin out one by one to be walked or to play with other dogs out in the grass. I was just there the other day and a foster parent who was fostering black lab puppies returned a healthy pup that she took care of for the shelter to put up for adoption and she was in tears, she couldnt even talk. and its NOT just a cold when it comes to cats, colds are very contagious and can harm the other cats that are not in the sick room.(especially kittens) thats great that you adopted a sick cat not everyone is as kind hearted as you to adopt a cat that will need extra vet attention at adoption.
If they arent contained in a different room the whole cat room would be sick and its hard to keep them healthy if it keeps going round in circles. if you see young people there, its most likely because they are volunteering, they aren't "workers" "employees". maybe some of you should consider volunteering there and see what its like, you should see the way these animals come into the shelter, DIRTY and HUNGRY if picked up off the streets, its sad yes but the shelter leads there do everything possible to get their weight up and treat their medical needs as best as possible. years ago this place was horrible, but now they have changed everything, how its ran, and how the animals are treated. I give them 5 thumbs up for all the hard work and care they put into these homeless and neglected animals.. so should you!

CCHS is amazing. A lot of people are that are willing to call them needless names are only seeing the outline of all they do. Yes, animals unfortunately are euthanized if necessary. But that is not all these people do. They take in animals who otherwise would have died from starvation, disease, and loneliness and give them a CHANCE. Without CCHS, the only shelter Carteret County has, these animals would be left for dead. They are dealt a tough hand and make the best of what they have. I adopted my dog there this past summer, they picked her up as a stray with patches of bare skin and her ribs poking through, and thanks to CCHS, I got the chance to give a forever home to that timid, loving little girl. She is now 100% healthy, happy, and I owe it all to the shelter. Without them I would not have had the chance to rescue my Paisley girl-- who in turn, rescued me from a very difficult time in my life.

Please take a minute and look at things from both sides before you point fingers.

I love ya, CCHS! :)

To all of you who have wrote reviews I would like to say Thank you. It helps me make the needed changes to make our shelter the best......since we are the only one this county has.
I ask you to be fair as well; first impressions aren't always accurate when dealing with situations many know little about. With that said.... come see us; see the changes; make your own decision without the "past memories" haunting....
My staff and I LOVE our animals; we give them what others aren't.... please dont judge us.... before at least getting to know us.

I found a cat on the internet from their website. I called about her and they told me she was in the sick room because she had a cold. So I went there and talked to them about her. They told me that if she still had the cold on Sat. they would have to put her down. For a cold! I got them to let me go ahead and adopt her as long as I took her to the vet that day. So I did. Come to find out the vet I took her too she had been there before. The Vet said she was in good health. Thank God! While I was at the shelter I noticed that it was VERY crazy. There were "kids" "working" there. Like 10-17 year old kids! And they kids were nicer than the adults. I am very happy and glad that I got my cat. I just think more people, Adults, should help them out.

all that these people do here! Every time I have been in here though the workers were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable! They were patient as well.. I did alot of hunting before I was going to be ready to adopt a pet because adopting is a huge responsibility and I didn't want to just adopt a pet just to adopt and risk that it didn't work out for my family situation because I strongly believe in not wanting to take the animal BACK to the shelter because I acted to hastily and they were fully supportive of that and didn't mind that I had come back on many occasions. They were good with my 3 year old son who had to run around looking at all the puppies and kitties and they even let him feed the puppies some treats! That is amazing service!!

This place has definitely changed in the past few years since the new manager arrived. It is clean the pets look happy and healthy! considering the strays and turnovers that were previously neglected! The workers are really helpful always smiling (for the most part). these animals need homes but until they get their new home these people are the ones that care about them as if they were all their own! the more adopted out the LESS they have to euthanize! You cannot save them all but they at least try their damnedest!

It is easy to judge when you know very little about the job these people do. There is not enough time, nor enough people to give the animals all the attention they deserve. If everyone cared about these animals they would not be there, take the time to volunteer and help give them the attention they need. They have changed a lot in the past few years, the staff is terrific and they are there for the animals not for the money, since they are usually making minimum wage and there are no benifits.... it is hard to know everything about an animal since they do not speak and you must make guesses as to breeds and age, yet they do try!

Just like any animal shelter. They have a tough job. The animals there get very little attention. Some of them are very dirty and look very hungry. They do have adoption services and they are any where from 45-75 dollars and they also will take in animals. The staff is not very friendly and they are no assistance. There is never anyone there to greet you or explain what they do,.
