I went to this restaurant after reading the reviews on citysearch. I found following issues,

1. It was 90+ outside and the place was extremely hot. Not sure if they were running AC at all. There were only 2 or 3 fans running covering the whole area

2. Food was horrible. The coconut chutney smelled bad. Parathas were stale. I didn't find sounth Indian things like Dosas any better. Overall disappointing food taste.

Not sure if the positive reviews here are old reviews or I went on a bad day today (Wed buffet)

We've been eating at Udupi since 2002 and always enjoy it. Just ate there 2 nights ago; two of us dined lavishly for only $38 pre-tip. Service is usually excellent, though when they are crowded, service can lag. And some of the tables are a bit close together if the restaurant is really packed. Those are the only downsides; the food is always wonderful and I'm delighted that the owners have kept the quality up over the years. We've never once had a bad meal there.

As someone who used to be vegan and vegetarian at various points it was refreshing to be able to pick anything off the buffet without having to worry (especially if you're new to Indian food). When they are busy sometimes you don't get your glass refilled as much and sometimes when you ask questions there is some language barrier. I enjoy eating here and have mentioned it to vegetarians I know who live farther away than I (its a bit of a drive) that it is worth the trip if you like mildly spicy Indian food. My husband does not have a hard time finding things to eat either (he's always been a meat eater).

Best place to have Indian food if you do not have a car since the stop is just across the road. The food is good and the buffet is worth the money.Definitely a place to visit.
I have had a lunch buffet multiple times and also dinner and both are recommendable.Considering the poor upkeep many nearby restaurants have this is a comparatively very good place to dine

It is a pretty good place. Has good South Indian vegetarian food at an affordable price. Buffet is the best option here as the menu encompasses a lot of variety including idlis, dosas to good paisam. A must go place for people in Raleigh/Cary areas.

I like this place. They have a good buffet and the service is pretty good too. The buffet is a little expensive. I would recommend going for the buffet than for a regular meal if you want food worth the money. Ordering separate items on the menu might be a little expensive and the food you get in return might not be the best you've tasted.

One can only wonder at the range of opinions shown for this great restaurant...It seems that actual Indian people recognize and delight in the food! To me that says it all...I love this place and thier food is great. The service has always been polite and attentive.. I have gone there like,20 times with NO complaint...I did not drop in just one time to try to impress out of town snobs, I do not have a waitstaff persecution complex and I am not "scared and confused" by a plate of food that isn't from KFC. I have to ask all detractors...is it ignorance or are you being paid to slam this establishment? Blatant advertising for another location is pretty transparent...and have many of you ever really encountered a place that is consistently bad as these seemingly paid-off bad reviews are trying to make it seem? " I walked in the door and a rude dark skinned man threw 8 week old curry on my episcopalian wedding dress! Then he slapped my puppy and sold my grandmother!" Blatant racism abounds."They re-serve the food off of plates others don't finish-it's an Indian thing" Are you kidding me? Does anyone believe this? How about this...if you can't stop being a r@cist -j3rk long enough to realize when perfect food is placed before you...go eat somewhere else and spare us the slander. if you are looking for some heavy "theme-y" ambiance ,sort of an Indian Medeval Times...please remember...the waitstaff are not trademarked mascots in funny suits anxiously awaiting the opportunity to give you a little belly dance...these are real human beings just as deserving of respect as anyone. If you go there with an open mind and a desire to learn about and enjoy really good food, Udupi Cafe is there for you.

Unimpressive food. Afterwards I felt very heavy, slept and woke with headaches. I think they are putting too much MSG on the food to enhance it's flavor. Mediocre Indian food.

I ordered a plate of vada and they gave me the oldest and hardest vada I have ever eaten in my life. I asked the waiter about it, he went inside, came back and told that they cannot make any vada. They are serving all old and heated stuff. And the prices are expensive as well. I will never go back to that place and I suggest the same to everybody reading this review.

I am from South India and this food is very authentic. I can eat the excellent Idli, Dosai with sambar and coconut chutney and pakoras from the buffet every day. I have brought some friends here and they are slow to changing from the usual meat curries and breads from traditional Indian restaurants. I think they should definitely serve samosas and more potato dishes on the buffet.

I went to this restaurant on 9/27/2008 for dinner with a group of friends and ordered one of their "Royal" south indian items. Waited for about 25 mins for the food to get ready and was NOT amazed at all. The food they serve is very ordinary and NOT fresh. This is an indian thing, really. I would NOT be amazed if they take food from unfinished plates and serve it. Bad food. I really prefer Saffron over this restaurant any time. I will NOT be going there again.

Went on a Thursday afternoon for the buffet. There was no indication anywhere of the price, which ended up being a little over $20 for 2. There was a fairly limited selection of poorly seasoned, unimaginative food. It was bland, even for a western palate, bring on the spice!!! I will not be going back.

Our friends from DC were visiting us, and we wanted them to have a nice authentic South Indian food. I had heard about quality food being served at this restaurant, so after a whole day of fun we visited the restaurant on a Saturday evening. There was about 20-25 min wait before we could get in, and once seated the waiter was gone. He came back after 10 min and took our order and we asked him to make the food little spicy.
To our amazement we found that all the food was sprinkled with red chili powder and black pepper. The food was so horrible that we had to argue with the waiter, but he responded that the spicy food is like this. That was a horrible experience. I think that the food is already been prepared and kept and they just warm it up and bring it out to the customers and if someone asks for little bit change in the main course they just add something on the top and bring it out. I wont recommend anybody going there. The food was horrible as was their service. The price was also too much comparing to all other cuisines around the area.

My friends and I went to this resaturant on a late Saturday afternoon and it was fantastic! I'm not sure why other people are complaining about the service, but the entire staff was so friendly and extremely attentive to our table. Our appetizers and entrees came out very quickly and the wait staff was quick to refill water and take away any empty plates. When we were there, there were several groups of Indian people, so that there tells you the food is going to be great. The owner also stopped by our table and had a chat with us. We loved this restaurant and can't wait to go back! It's definitely worth the drive from Carrboro.

It is too pricey for very poor quality and ordinary food. The lunch Buffet they do not hesitate to serve same thing for Dinner plate in the evening (YES this true if u do not believe me test it). Lot of stuff like Sambar, Chutney and Vegetable entrees are prepared and kept for 4-5 days in the freezer/refrigerator. All they do is reheat and serve. I am seeing this place for last 2 years their prices have increased so much becuase they do not have much competition in this area for south indian food. They have very Bad customer service. They do not refill the water in time until you interrupt and ask them. They have very less manpower to serve all the tables.

Planning to pay more for just vegetarian food ???? This play is good for you.

I never go here if it is not Buffet. wast of money if you are going Alacarte.
Thsa place charges like $10( week day , with tip) and $15( week end) for a buffet.

For god sake this is vegetarian food ? how much does 1 pound of any vegetable cost ( max $4/lb)
how huge are the profit margin ???

he even charges more when it is easter ? good friday ( day to fast ) ? long week ends ? WHY ?

my suggestion DON'T GO HERE . charged more for nothing.

We had probably the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant. We waited for an hour for our food to arrive, without any explanation or apology whatsoever. (While the tables around us did not seem to be waiting an inordinate amount of time.) This was a Sunday night; the restaurant was busy but not full. Even the bread took an hour to arrive. Once the meal finally arrived, we were still missing 2 people's meals, and waited another 10 minutes for them. At one of his few visits to our table (after the food arrived), our waiter took a cell phone call. To be fair, the food was pretty good, but the service completely ruined the evening; I won't be back.

I'm South Indian and have Uncles and Aunts in Philly that are fabulous cooks. This Udupi is better than the Santa Clara, CA and other Udupi's I've eaten at as I travel on business across the U.S. Their weekend buffets feature an enhanced authentic menu and if you want to eat the best South Indian food like it is made in Chennai then go here.

A suggestion on how to make it authentic like we eat back home: Take cups of sambar and rasam to your table first per person. Then take white rice and the poriyals (that change daily) on plate to your table. Mix the sambar with the rice thoroughly and then eat with poriyal and papads; do the same with rasam as a second course. As a finishing course try the South Indian closing meal to cool the palat and the throat by eating the homemade yogurt mixed again thoroughly with white rice. Sprinkle on some rasam or some poriyal or if you are feeling adventurous, eat it with the Indian pickles (usually very spicy).

Also try their Rava Masala Dosai- even my mom (sorry mom :O) doesn't make it that well at home; must be their industrial grills...

I've made it a point to eat Indian in every place I've lived and travelled and this is by far my favorite restaurant. I've simply never come across an Indian restaurant that was this consistently good. I make a point of enjoying the lunch buffet at least once a week and, with very rare exception, I always leave fully satisfied. The key to the flavor at Udupi is the freshenss - I've often marvelled that each bite tastes like it was made on my fork the moment before it entered my mouth. And, being a vegetarian, it's always nice to know that I can eat anything on the spread. Having a variety of items on my plate is never an issue. I should note, however, that, while the evening menu is great, the lunch buffet simply cannot be beat. You can often find a wide assortment of dishes on the buffet that are not on the menu (such as the delicious Mushroom Mutter and Broccoli Makhini) and the ability to combine the many flavors on one plate is certainly a benefit of coming at lunch time. The staff is also very polite and accomodating. I am never in want of water or napkins and they always have something pleasant to say. Overall, I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

I have tried Udupi twice so far - once for buffet and once for dinner, where I ordered off the menu. Both times were very good; it did taste a lot fresher off the menu though. Everything is vegetarian, which is fantastic, and it seemed like they have some N. Indian dishes too. The appetizer sampler was good, especially the sweet potato item. One of the chickpea appetizers was too dry. The dosai were good, as was the rice dish I had (biti belam batha or something). The almond halwa is the best Indian dessert I have ever tried!

One of the best Indian restaurants in the area. The weekday lunch buffet is easy on the budget and the food is always hot and delicious.

They are very family friendly with no smoking anywhere in their establishment and they have severala seats for the larger families.

They always have several lightly spiced dishes for the little ones, and if you need some more heat, just ask them to bring you some fresh chopped chili's.

Dinners are always excellent, but I am always drawn back to the lunch buffet so that I can try out their different dishes.

Pros: Excellent Family Dining, No Smoking, Reasonable Prices

Cons: None that I can think of.

Udupi Cafe is one of the places I could eat at almost everyday. The selections are fantastic, the food is out of this world, the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and the price for the buffet during the week is great. The price on the weekends is too high I think, but that doesn't keep me from going every once in a long while. This is by far the best Indian food I have eaten. I am never disappointed in this place- except when I want to eat lunch late because they close at 3pm. I highly recommend it, infact I wish I were there right now.

We moved from California (haven for good Indian restaurants) and we were very disappointed with the food. we tried the lunch buffet on a Sunday. On the positive note, the place was friendly with kids.

I've been to many Indian buffets and this restaurant stands out as one of the few serving South Indian cuisine. Unlike most buffets, the food is Fresh! The chutney's aren't runny, but thick and flavorful. The food is extremely flavorful, not a watered down version for the typical American palate. The ambience is casual, modern, and clean. And for the price of $10 on the weekends, a great deal. The large number of south Indian customers is a testament to the quality of food. This is a great place for a casual lunch/dinner.

First, the food is fabulous and served with style. Beautiful presentation, nice atmosphere. While not overly romantic (it's a little bright), it's still a nice place to bring guests and the decor is comfortable. A lot of people's reviews seem to indicate that the service is bad...maybe I'm just hopelessly charming or something, but I've always had great service overall. They've been really nice about accomidating dietary needs (I'm vegan) and things like that. Some of the best indian food I've had anywhere, including San Francisco (can't remember if I've had it in DC or NY, but I've eaten in a heck of a lot of restaurants.) Very accomodating when we've brought large groups too!

Udipi Cafe serves an amazing variety of traditional southern Indian dishes at the lunch buffet. The buffet menu is constantly changing and there are always tasty new deserts. Udipi does not scrimp on the ingredients, like many Indian restaurants do, and the food is always top-quality and fresh. By far the best Idian restuarant in the Triangle!! Try it and you are hooked!!!

I was very impressed by the food at Udupi. It was the first time that my husband and I have had this regional Indian cusine, so we where unsure of what to order. The male servers offered no help or suggestions and seemed to get impatient with us. We finally guessed at what we ordered and it was very good. A female server came to our table after our food was served and she was very nice and patient with our questions. So, I give a thumbs up for the food, but the service could be improved.

I have been to Udipi a number of times, and have never had any problems with the food - buffet or off the menu. The food is always hot, perfectly spiced/seasoned, and served in enough quantity to appease me. The atmosphere is not the best, I'll grant that, and the waiters are not the best English speakers, but I do not care. The food makes it worth it!

I had never experienced Southern Indian food before, and I found that I had been missing out! Try the appetizer sampler to taste all of the wonderful selections, and the sauces that come with it - yum! I was also impressed with the breads that come with the dishes. I can't wait to go back!

I thought the food was very satisfactory for a buffet style lunch. I went for the Saturday buffet because my friends recommended it. I have not had a lot of Indian food so I can't make much of a comparison, but I thought everything I tried tasted very good. The group of people that came with me enjoyed the food as well. As a non vegetarian I was impressed. I would not recommend this as a place to take a first date, but if you are looking for good food Udupi is a plus.

My neighbor, when I was growing up, was Indian and cooked many Southern India dishes. For large events, the whole extended family would cook- everything was delicious. At Udupi I easily recognized all the dishes but they were all awful. Too salty and too greasy. I've tried it 3 times, just to be sure, and I always feel nauseaus afterwards. The staff seems very rude, too- I've had problems getting orders corrected, etc. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you are curious.
