Ratings_icons Animal Medical Hospital is a disappointment

Jennifer P.

Well, today was my first experience with AMH. I was excited about not having to drive 30 minutes to the vet. I waited for nearly 30 minutes before being taken back into the room. The nurse was rude and went on and on about all of the things that would need to be done to my dog for his yearly check-up. This should have been a red flag to me to RUN (especially since I used to work for a vet and KNEW what they needed to do for this checkup) but I didn't.... I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were truly doing what was BEST for my dog, rather than what would earn them the most money. At the end of this "checkup" I owed AMH nearly $200. When I asked a question about the bill, I was looked at like I was an idiot. I will not be returning to AMH, which is sad because the Dr. was great! Their prices are absolutely RIDICULOUS! The highest in Charlotte for sure!!!! It would be completely different if the service was worth it.... but it wasn't. We will be returning to our old vet that was 30 minutes down the road and truly strives to have great customer service.

Ratings_icons Animal Medical Hospital is not what u A**'s are saying

None YA B.

I sat here and read all this crap majority of you have written. Your honestly all idiots. Animal Medical Hospital's prices are National average. If you don't like it then don't come! How hard is that? Your probably all rich stuck up a**holes and they don't want your BS business. And as for the kennel, they have the best kennel and kennel staff thus far. When I board my animals there, I have had no problem and I know they are well taken care of. And no the kennel is very clean and majority of the time clear of odors. They do not allow animals to sit in there own feces. I'm telling you from inside experience, these reviews are complete s**t. Oh and the Alicia T. idiot... AMH doesn't debark, crop ears nor do any cosmetic surgery and they haven't in years.

Ratings_icons Animal Medical Hospital is caring and the best!!!

James D.

I have been a client of this practice for 4 years and found it to have only caring attentive staff both doctors and in back. I have been able to visit the kennel while boarding my pet ane been very satisified with the cleanliness and care given to my pets. The charges that I have had have ranged from a routine examination to a very difficult surgery of significant expense but, I felt that my pet was given the best of care and I received the communication that I deserved from the doctors. There has always been someone available to answer my concerns after hours. I do not have a great income but would not dream of taking my 6 cats and 4 dogs anywhere else.

Ratings_icons Nightmare Experience at AMH

K. M.

I had my dog spayed at AMH. She was still bleeding at the incision when I picked her up the day after the surgery. The Dr. who met with me warned me and said to bring her back if she didn't get any better and there would be no charge. By-the-way, I never even met the Dr. that actually did the procedure. I had to bring my dog back that night because I was very concerned with the amount of bleeding and could not get it stopped. I was very upset when I brought her back to AMH, and on top of that they were very rude and the third Dr. that I had to meet with actually said they were going to have to charge me another $278 for bringing her back in and didn't believe me when I said that the release (second) Dr. said to bring her back at no charge. That was one of the first things the third Dr. told me. I think the other reviews are correct and the only thing that is important to AMH is the bottom line. I love Dr. Pannea but she had nothing to do with this operation unfortunately. They ended up having to keep her until Sunday. The operation was on Thursday. I refused additional payment. It was a total nightmare experience.

Ratings_icons Never take my animals anywhere but here

Leann K.

I have had the experience of working for this hospital, All the way from the top of Susan and Richard Coe to the latest intern. Every doctor in this practice means nothing but the best intensions for any animal that walks through the front doors. Either it being a healthy yearly appointment or a life threatening situation this hospital functions on only the best possible care for any pet with any situation. I have since had an experience at another emergency practice and though it was better for me in my life's personal situation, I could never compare the caring attitudes and medical treatment that I witnessed employed at AMH. Animal Medical Hosp. holds VERY high standards in any and every case they are dealt. Its to bad about the negative responses I have read. People carry their opinions and I can appreciate every last negative one. YES veterinary care is expensive. The day you can walk into any animal hospital and slam a insurance card down on the counter and say do whatever my pet needs will be a glorious day, as for you and for any animal care representative. But for now we do not have that luxury, so its our job to figure out how are we are gonna cover the medical expenses of our animal. We take on that responsibility when we choose to bring a new pet into our home. Hospitals must charge for any services done if they didn't where would you take your pet when they really needed medical attention. Shortly after I left AMH I had adopted a new kitten and he became sick. I still chose to take him to AMH. In making that choice I had to pay over $1000 for his medical treatment rather than taking him to the current hospital I was working at and reap the benefits of my employee discount. Without even thinking it through I drove to AMH, my new kitten was so lethargic I wasn't sure if he would survive my travel. Since this scary incident Cola is back home with us. When I think back to that night, the scariest thing was driving him there. When I walked into that hospital and I gave them my cat any fear of him not coming back home never entered my mind. That alone was worth $1000 to me. The support from the front desk to the kennel to the technical staff is absolutely unbelievable. I have since returned back to AMH and I honestly can say I don't know what I was thinking when I left.

I started taking my beagle here a couple of years ago...and Doberman shortly after. Every time we go she sees a different doctor. On top of that they recommended surgery for my Doberman and he didn't even need it. This hospital is not concerned with knowing your pet, they are about getting as much money as they possibly can from pet parents. They recommend unnecessary shots ANNUALLY when everything I have read says most of these aren't recommended for annual injection. So my advice...do your research and get a second opinion if the recommend something.

First, I would like to say that the medical care at AMH is outstanding. I live 1 1/2 hours away and drive there to have my pet taken care of. I have visited the kennel and it is not as Mandy O. said. The kennel is clean, temperature controlled, and the staff is outstanding. Everyone there, from the front desk staff, treatment, doctors, kennel, treatment, and even the managers are professional. I've always been greeted with a smile and compassionate care. I remember Mandy O. Weren't you a previous employee there? Sounds like you're a little bitter to me... You actually checked in my pets a few times & I think that you no longer working there is a great help to AMH. I would recommend this clinic to anyone...and I do. They really have the care of the pet at heart.

My dog was brought here after a near fatal dog attack. They were all incredible, from the reception desk, to the techs, and most of all the doctors. They took our calls at all hours of the day and night(with pleasure), explained every procedure, and let us visit as often as we wished. I cannot say enough about the care my dog and family received, and I am thrilled to report they saved his life.

I had to take my cat to the emergency vet on a Sunday and was told that he would have to be put to sleep. I was very upset and emotional. The vet said she would give me a few minutes to spend with him before she put him to sleep. As I was spending my last few minutes with my pet, horribly upset, one of the people came in and asked me for my payment. I had to stop comforting my pet, who was in extreme pain and dig in my purse for a credit card. The vet came in a few minutes later and put him to sleep (and she was very kind). However, right after she put him to sleep the same woman came in and told me I had to sign my debit card receipt. I understand that I need to pay for the services. However, a little respect for someone who loves their animal and has to face the hard decision to put them down should be expected. I was not going to run out on my bill. I simply wanted a few mintues to be with my animal. They ruined any chance I had to be able to look back on the last day of my cat's life and not be filled with anger about how I was treated.

I had the unfortunate experience of having to decide the best for my dog's end of life. They handled our dog with such grace and dignity and gave us all options before we had to make the toughest decision of our lives. After she passed on, they sent us cards, did a beautiful clay pawprint, and sent her remains to an excellent crematory for us. They also sent some our money to research in honor of our dog, Lucy. I will not say anything about cost here, as I can't compare expenses from one vet to another in every single case I've had, but my pets are worth every penny. I highly recommend these caring veternarians.

Ratings_icons Expensive

I've taken my pets to AMH for many years and have alternated with another vet at times. The one consistent experience at AMH is that all that "state of the art-ness" is tied to a state of the art billing system that captures as much stuff as they do at the human hospital. It's nearly always expensive. It also seems that is only a stopping off point for many vets and it is rare that you get to work with the same vet for long.

Ratings_icons Overpriced and deceitful

Anonymous

I've been taking my cats here for over 12 years. I usually never have had a problem, until one of my cats has been having to take medication daily. I decided to research the web for a cheaper place for the medication (which through the vet is approximately .67 per pill). I did find the pills for .45 per pill at an online retailer, and requested the vet to write me a prescription so I may get it filled online. Apparently, you will get the written prescription but they will not authorize the online retail to fill it. I asked AMH why they hadn't authorized the online retailer to fill the prescription and was told they knew nothing of the written prescription given to me and wouldn't authorize it. (Hmmm, seems fishy to me, since they have an incredibly state-of-the-art computer system at the hospital.) But they agreed they would price match the online retailer's price, as long as I brought in the receipt. Great! So I go and pick up the prescription and proceeded to be told that the prescription THAT THEY WROTE didn't have the correct pill count on it... So what? I said, what does that have to do with anything? I'm still showing you my receipt which shows the per pill price on it for you to price match. Next thing they decided to do was not give me the same medication as on the prescription! They went with another form of it, which is actually cheaper than the .45/pill price on the website. I could have bought this new pill for 100 pills at $29.99, but instead they bait and switched me and gave me the price of the pills at the .45/pill price.

This place is overpriced (Pill Pockets here are $9.90/package. I can buy 6 packages for $24.95 online - just to name another example) and now my experience has been that they are deceitful too. I'm now taking my pets elsewhere who don't care about profiteering for the sake of an animal's health.

Ratings_icons DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS THERE!!!

tsadvarcamp 1.

The staff at this hospital lacks people skills. You enter the establishment and no one greets you until you have been standing there for 5 minutes. They try to add additional charges when you pick up your dog and then claim that it was discussed. For boarding it is not feasible since all they have are small kennels. Your dog is caged up all day and may have only one or two 15 minute walks.

Think again before you board your dog. For an emergency it is ok, but otherwise avoid it!

I have used this vet on many occasions for after hour emergencies when my vet was closed. They run a very smooth ship. First a nurse with evaluate your pet. Then you see the vet. Sometimes the wait is long but it is well worth it. They have the newest equipment to help your pet. They also offer boarding services.

This vet hospital is open 24 hours a day which has been a literal lifesaver with my pets when they are ill. Its also nice in that I work long hours so I can bring my pets for routine medical procedures (vaccinations) at 10pm if I want. You do have to pay an extra fee for late night visit however.

Ratings_icons Never Had A Problem

blusterly

Two years ago, two days before Christmas, two days after her fourth birthday, my cat, Mica, became very ill, so I took her to AMH. She passed away the morning of Christmas day. At such a sad time, the staff was very respectful and caring, and it made an impression on me. Also, they were accommodating in helping me with the final arrangements for Mica.

Last week my other cat, zero (11yrs old), wasn't feeling well and I rushed him to AMH. Again, the whole staff was very caring and insightful. After a little medication zero is feeling fine, and I just received a checkup call from AMH wanting to know how she's doing.

Another good thing about this place is that it's about a block away from Stanley's Apothecary, which specializes in compounding medicines. If you're pet needs any, it's convenient. The staff at the Apothecary are also pet-loving, intelligent, friendly people.

As for the AMH doctor herself, she certainly has a genuine love of animals and she's always been able to answer my questions. I've no complaints about the place at all, and I'll continue going there when I need to.

Pros: Knowledgeable, Friendly, Concerned about my pets

Ratings_icons Dr. L Pennea, Animal Medical Hospital

mbktoo

I have nothing but the highest regard and respect for Dr. Pennea. Over the past 20+ years I have used the services of a number of different vets to help treat my cats who have had a wide variety of medical conditions. Some have been good experencies others have not.
Then I discovered Dr. Pennea. She is extremely knowledable, extremely dedicated, and extremely caring. I have absolute trust in her to give me the advice I need to to give my cats the quality of life they deserve.
There have been times when I needed to bring one of my babies in for treatment with a critical condition when she was not on duty. Whenever possible I always waited for her input before making a decision. She has even contacted me on her days off to help me give my cats the care and treatment they needed.
I can never thank her enough for everything she has done and will continue to do for
me and my cats. In a word she is "AWESOME"

Pros: absolute best vet!!!

Cons: none

Great vet. Her genuine love of animals is evident in everything she does. Highly skilled. Dr. Pennea has a unique ability to calm her clients. My cats are quickly purring once she deals with them. My two cats are my babies and I would normally be a very protective, critical mother. But I have absolute faith that they will get the best of care from Dr. Pennea and I feel secure. I hope my cats live a long healthy life and that Dr. Pennea is there to care for them every step of the way.

Pros: Dr. Pennea, Hours, Location

Cons: Price

I have mixed feeling about this hospital. I don't recommend it for everyone and for those that do go there, I gaurantee you that you have had a different experience almost every time you go.
CONS:
- they OVERBOOK during Holidays. You might not be getting what you are paying for.
- their staff is always changing.
- if an emergency comes in, you can be waiting for hours.
- they are expensive
- they WILL NOT TREAT your pet unless, and until, you have funds available at the time you walk in.
PRO'S:
- they are an emergency hospital.
- some veterinarians are great and will do anything for your pet.

Pros: MOST VETERINARIANS THERE ARE GREAT

Cons: NOT A GOOD STAFF

Ratings_icons Extremely Rude

browner20

My 4 year old boxer went to Animal Medical Hospital for three years before I moved to Raleigh. My finace and I recently moved back to Charlotte and adopted another boxer puppy. I recommended that my finace take her to AMH for her first check-up. My finace just called in tears because of the way DVM Lorraine Pennea treated her. She said we would have to rid of our puppy when we have kids and that our 10wk boxer puppy was etrememly aggressive? My four year old boxer is the favorite animal in our neighborhood and our puppy is the same way and receiving the same training. My fiance also mentioned that she did not even have the decency to ask her name, the puppy's name, nor did she introduce herself. I don't care if the place was busy and Lorraine was having the worst day- AMH lost our business.

Pros: Capabilities, Hours

Cons: Rude vet, expensive

Animal Medical Hospital is excellent. Dr. Pennea is wonderful. She has been our vet since our miniature Daschund hurt her back and had to go to the emergency room. Since then she has treated all three daschunds --back surgery, viral infection, allergic reaction to a bite, and a foot biopsy --not to mention the dreaded nail trims. She is excellent, compassionate, and will always do what is best for your pet.

Pros: Easy to get to, Open 24 hours

Cons: can be busy

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about all of the vets and staff at the Animal Medical Hospital. They are incredibly courteous, kind, and willing to answer all your questions. Have boarded there as well and my dog has always come home happy. Recently had to put our 14 year old dog to sleep and they were all so compassionate towards both Max and to our family. Great place!
