This spot was recommended by a realtor we were working with. We asked for real BBQ and ended up at the lodge. This was the worse BBQ I have ever had everything was either frozen or out of a can. Sorry we took their advice shame on us .

Folks were courteous, pork BBQ I would rate 4 of 10, but the veggies I could not eat. The collards looked like mush from a gallon container and were simply not good, as if the can had been sitting around for a year or so. The cold slaw is yellow, sweet and tart and unpleasant...could not eat it. The brunswick stew was sweet and again without a pleasing taste. I basically just ate the pork BBQ and left. I will not ever return or recommend this place.

Place was dingy

. Service...what service?

Food: Mushy barbecued chicken, creamed potato salad...where was the potatoes? Chocolate cake...thick and gooey. Coleslaw: not edible.

We're surprised this place is open for business.
Should have sent the food back, but was to polite.
Never Again

Barbecue Lodge has been a favorite of mine for many years. Unlike the BBQ establishments further northwest and west of Raleigh, BBQ Lodge sticks to the Eastern NC tradition of serving baskets of hush puppies and cornbread sticks when you are seated- nothing stingy here! Our waitress is excellent every time and is trained in the old school- find that in any chain restaurant, I dare you. When I want good bbq and chicken I don't have to have chintz and valet parking. All I want is good food and service in a clean establishment and you get that here! They even make good unsweetened tea- Yankees take note!\r

Cons: None...unless you are a Yankee or some other foreigner

This BBQ is so good, that it is specifically requested by my brother who lives in Selma, AL. They also have great potato salad. If you're looking for good Carolina BBQ, this is the place to come. Great prices too.

Typical Eastern NC BBQ comes family style with fried chicken, hush puppies, cole slaw and your choice of sides. All you can eat; with generous helpings of everything in an 80's inspired formica palace. Mediocre suburban surroundings, with occasional live music brings a very rural feel to the strip mall location. \r
The food is ok, but very salty. Collards come laden with pork belly fat, hush puppies are sometimes piping hot, other times tepid and unappetizing.\r
\r
The menu has more choices than many BBQ restaurants. All in all, it represents a good value if you're very hungry and don't mind a lot of salt.\r
\r
Service is very friendly and makes up for the dreary surroundings.

Pros: Abundant Eastern NC BBQ and all the trimmings, family style, good friendly service

Cons: Dreary decor, too much salt, fried bread a go-go

The Barbecue Lodge still has great barbecue. I use to live in Raleigh years ago and I now live in Charlotte, NC. I went to Raleigh to visit some friends over the Memorial Day weekend and had a chance to eat there. We were seated quickly and the service was good. We got the buffet all you can eat with barbecue, seafood and fried chicken it was so much food but it was good. The barbecue in Charlotte which is considered western style isn't as good as the eastern style barbecue I grew up on. As far as I know Charlotte has only one restaurant that serves eastern style barbecue but the restaurant hours are limited 10am to 3pm Monday through Friday and it's to far away from my job to go there for lunch. The Barbecue Lodge is one of things I miss about Raleigh.

I live in Raleigh and have been searching for the best Barbeque. A friend recommended this place to me. Everyone has different tastes. I like mine vinegary. If there's such a word. I also like mine with lots of flavor. The kind of flavor that have you longing for your next barbeque plate. This place serves okay barbeque. It's too dry for me. Kind of like they squeezed the juice out of it. Not much flavor as I wanted. It's the closest Barbeque place to where I live but next time I'll just have to drive farther. I still have yet to find the BEST barbeque in these parts as of yet.

First thing's first; the BBQ is fabulous. Finely chopped, perfectly seasoned, delightfully tender. It's the best I've had since moving down here 8 months ago. A previous reviewer that gave this place 1 star obviously has no clue what Eastern NC BBQ is all about. If you are unfamiliar with this style of BBQ, do a bit of research. You won't find ""K.C. Masterpiece"" sauce on our tables down here. Cider vinegar, some ceyenne and red pepper flakes - this is our sauce.\r
\r
The sides are pretty good too. I love the puppies, love the slaw. I will agree that the ""corn sticks"" are kind of gross...they're just too thin, and don't taste like cornbread.\r
\r
The atmosphere is like a rural Knights of Columbus/Mosse Lodge/Chuch basement banquet hall with some decorative pigs thrown in the mix. It's a family BBQ joint, not Morton's.\r
\r
Your waitress will probably call you ""Hun"" or ""Sugar"". You seat yourself. Food arrives quickly, served on blue plastic plates circa 1973. Order the sweet tea and you get your own pitcher for refills. Serving sizes are on the large size. I get the small BBQ plate, and I'm a big guy - can barely finish. The large plate would be plenty for 2. Prices are reasonable and in-line with other BBQ joints.

For the out-of-towners who dont know, before criticizing food because it is different, do some research on where you are. That type of bbq and coleslaw is typical of Eastern North Carolina, mustard cole slaw and vinegar based bbq. If you wanted bbq sauce on your bbq, then go to western NC and that is what you will get. BBQ is a type of food...not a condiment around here. BBQ Lodge has excellent bbq, slaw, and fried chicken. They are one of the best in town and cheap too! It is nothing fancy on the inside but it is a family owned and operated business that prides themselves on friendly staff and good food. If you like bbq, you MUST try this place!

We love bbq and eat it several times a month. We are always eager to try a new place while on vacation. Visiting from Miami , FL we had no clue where to get good bbq in Raleigh, NC. Someone at our hotel recommended Barbecue Lodge on Capital Blvd. When we arrived we were a bit skeptical because from the outside it looked like a dive. It was inside of a strip mall and parking was difficult. We pressed on though. We walked in and the decor was really drab and plain. We were seated and the waitress brought us a basket of fried hush puppies and ""corn sticks"". The hush puppies were alright, but the ""corn sticks"" were rather nasty. They didn't taste anything like corn and they were completely overdone. We ordered a bbq pork sandwich, a half bbq chicken, chicken and dumplings and a fried shrimp platter. When our meal arrived we sat stunned. The pork sandwich had no bbq sauce. It was just shredded pork on a sesame bun. The coleslaw was a dark yellow color. It is made with mustard (I've never seen this anywhere). The chicken and dumplings looked like chunks of flour and boiled chicken sitting in salted water. The bbq chicken was undercooked. The skin looked boiled. It was sitting in a puddle of orange grease. This is what they called bbq sauce. When we asked about the bizarre coleslaw the waitress basically laughed and said we should have known before we ordered that it had mustard. The only bbq sauce available was in a small bottle on the table and it didn't look or taste like any bbq sauce I have ever had. It was watery and tasted like vinegar. The fried shrimp was about the only thing that wasn't completely awful. However, it looked like something straight out of a freezer bag. The fries were also overdone and looked like Ore Rida.\r
\r
Overall, the entire meal was gross and we left most of the food on the table and just paid the $30 check and went to Wendy's. That's pretty bad when you have to leave a restaurant and get fast food.

Cons: Odd waitress, bad food, difficult parking

If you are lucky, you will get to hear one of ladies blurt out for Freddie to handle a call on line 1 ! In the meantime, you can savor the vingegar based bbq chopped to fine perfection. They really pile the bbq\r
high on your sandwich here and give you a lot of slaw if you order it on the side ! They are fast, friendly and very reasonably priced.

I could not believe the amount of food for the money. for one price you can get Chicken, bar B Que, sides, etc and it was less than going to feed the family at a buffet. But the food is average so don't expect too much, you get what you pay for here. Average food and plenty of it.

Barbecue Lodge catered the EWHS Band Boosters semi-annual BBQ sale, in front of WalMart in K'dale. They have done so for many years now.
The past couple of years, the BBQ has been way too salty and heartburn inducing. I don't know what can be done about it, but something should be fixed or place a warning on each take out container.

This is another electric cooked BBQ place established by Don Murry, and now owened by someone else. The BBQ is good, but I think it is cooked at a temperature that is too high. The BBQ is fine ground rather than shreaded or chopped. The taste of the pork is very good, but it leaves a bit of a odd feel on the teeth. The side items are good, but nothing special. Ify you get seafood, that is good too. The homestyle BBQ dinner is a great value - around $6.50 for all you can eat. The waitstaff is very good & friendly. The food is good.

I Love it! Everything they serve is so good. And it is even awsome left over. Family style is the best way to eat. It's like a buffet and you don't even have to leave the table! You've got to try it, at least once!

Devoted readers of my citysearch reviews, my wife and cat, I want all of Raleigh to hear me scream from the mountain-tops: ""THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I WILL EVER GO FOR BARBECUE.""
The Lodge's Eastern NC, Vinegar-based BBQ is my favorite from childhood and the Murrary Family's establishment remains a shining beacon to all that is Hog.
Needless to say, please try it.
Thank you Don, for not retiring after selling the ""other"" place up the road those many years ago.

I have been meaning to try this place for a while and I finally did this week....I can't wait to go back! The furnishings are not fancy, but the place is clean with a 98 sanitation grade. The service is quick, friendly, and the food is great! You can't beat the family style value of 6.50- hot fried chicken, bbq, hushpuppies and sides. They even bring you your own pitcher of sweet tea so you never have to ask for refills. You gotta try this place if you are looking for reasonably priced hot and tasty southern food!
