Bank of Oak Ridge is becoming like the big banks........

Over the last year since October 2012 they have reduced interest on checking account from 3% to 1.5%. (you have to have minimum $400 in checkcard debits, 2 direct deposits, 10 checkcard transactions to qualify for interest rate). I did this routinly & still do....but my interet rate has been cut in half.

Also, they have a big whopping 4 location basically in norhtwest Greensboro. so not very conveinent. Now they started charging for ATM withdrawal fees (they will cover 6)...but get this: I take out money at an other banks atm (foreign ATM) and get charged $2 atm fee from that bank....THEN Bank of OAKRIDGE also charges me $3 for the same transaction! WHich counts as two seperate transactions!!!!!!! They charge more & didn't even dispense the money!!!!!!

They must have written some mortages that have become toxic & are trying to recoup some cash.

This review applies to the Irving Park Elm Street location.
I have never ever seen such a bunch of inept people such as that work at the Elm Street location and telephone conversations with other branches are just as bad.
They all refuse to be held accountable for their mistakes and always push off the blame. These people have absolutely no idea what a bank's function is or their role in customer service.
We travel domestically and internationally frequently and have been stranded on numerous occasions without access to cash using their debit card. This bank has a preset daily limit on how much cash you can withdraw from an ATM daily. We had the limit raised to suit OUR needs and was lectured and chastised by the bank rep who LIED about how setting these low limits protect the customer from fraud. Total BULL. As a customer of ANY bank, you are only responsible for the first $50 of fraudulent charges, the bank has to cough up the rest. They don't even know Federal law.
We were ready to purchase a retirement home in Florida and the mortgage rep "forgot" about our application even though the credit bureau showed the date when the credit check was made. Two calls and two months later, he finally got back with us. Don't EVER exchange foreign currency with these idiots. You'll get nailed a $45 "courier" fee and then a whopping "exchange" fee which equates to about 6 percent of the value of the exchange amount in dollars.
They used to pay 3.74% on their checking account up to 30K, that's GONE.
They used to have a complimentary safe deposit box, that's GONE.
They used to have an unlimited use no fee ATM card, that's GONE.
Last straw was that we got stranded in the UK and the debit card did not work. Ever been stranded in a foreign country with no cash? Not pretty. AND this was after we had done all the necessary travel notifications and spoke with a rep at the bank.
When asked if we are set to go and there will be no problems, her response was you're OK to go. Did not even bother to check anything.
The other ignoramus told us that our card was declined because we had exceeded our daily limit of $500 and inferred that we were stupid in that we were unable to figure out the exchange rates and this is what put us over the limit. Well, our card had a $1,000 daily limit and the withdrawal was way less than that. To make matters worse, this is the same ignoramus that raised our limit previously and chastised us for doing so.
Then the ignoramus told us to call back later (she knew that we were overseas), made a lame excuse about not being able to call international from her phone and told us their building had been struck by lightning.
You call that customer service? We have to PAY long distance charges to call a bank that has screwed up our debit card.
These people at the Irving Park location are at best remedial high school drop outs with no respect and above all lack any knowledge of proper banking procedures and customer service.
I'm not sure about the other branches, but be wary of this one.

Agree with Ray. They are starting to play the same check/charge clearing games that made me leave Wachovia in the first place and go to BOOR. It's their right as a business but the fact that they were fair, not foul was what made me recommend them to so many friends. I am closing my account as of this week's payday.

I will say that they were really helpful resolving some unauthorized charges I had a few years ago but of course that was before they started all this other stuff so I don't really know if that would go as well now.

I have another account at PNC which I opened last year while I was living in Baltimore. I wish they were here in NC.

I cannot say enough about the Bank of Oak Ridge -- and, just in case anyone is wondering -- I do not work for them, I am not related or friends with anyone that works for them. I moved down to NC from VT under unfortunate circumstances. When I first moved here, I banked with Wachovia -- what a mistake -- typical corporate banking experience. When I opened my account with Bank of Oak Ridge, I was going through some really tough financial times. Their employee actually helped me to get myself out of that bind. When they had the chance to exploit my situation -- instead, they helped me. I can't say enough about this bank. To be able to call an 800 number and actually have them recognize my name is amazing. Thank you Bank of Oak Ridge,.

When I became a customer over 10 years ago, I was assured they would be the hometown bank and not act like the larger, more impersonal banks.

I guess they grew up. Last week, in the sickening tradition of Bank of America and Wachovia, both who are involved in class action suits for the same inappropriage acts, they chose to deduct the largest withdrawal from my son's account rather than in order of the actual withdrawal, which meant they nailed him for 4 or 5 subsequent overdrafts. Mind you, had they deducted the withdrawals as he made them, this never would have happnened.

We went to the Oak Ridge branch twice to see Lisa, the branch manager (who was not available each time) and left numerous calls. We heard nothing for more than a week. Finally someone from the bank called to say they would "split the charges (which amounted to $235, including one $35 overdraft charge for a $1.00 purchase!!

Sucky practice, Bank of Oak Ridge. We are planning to have your name added to the list of banks currently engaged in this rip off.
As soon as my Tax returns get deposited and clear, I am clearing out of you bank. Shame on you.

Business Response:

We apologize for no returned phone calls, as that is not acceptable by any standard. Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated as we continue to build our organization with our customers' success as the driving factor. We would love the opportunity to earn your trust again.

Bad experience, start to finish. Got the feeling that no one had any idea of what they were doing....putting deposits in the wrong accounts...nothing but resistance from upper management when I tried to resolve it.

My money would be safer buried in a jar in the back yard.

This bank has only 3 branches right now, but they have plans for more. I like the friendly, helpful small town atmosphere. The staff has always been knowledgeable and courteous with every transaction that they have helped us with whether it has been getting a checking account open, buying a certificate of deposit, or getting a safety deposit box. Their rates are comparable to others in the area. They have a main branch that is large and spacious. It is conveniently located in the heart of Oak Ridge with easy access to Highway 68 and Highway 150. I have gone in and asked and got to see the President of the Bank and got to meet with him. They do have two people on the Board of Directors that I do not approve of. They did not tell the truth and keep their word to our homeowners association.

PROS: Professional and All Banking services offered
CONS: Only 3 Branches, Don't approve of two of the Board of Directors

Bank of Oakridge is a local bank that takes pride in its personal and friendly customer service. A variety of banking options are offered for checking, savings, investment and business accounts. There is even no minimum balance checking availble to those over 50. Several convenient locations make banking quick and easy. Honesty is also one of their hallmarks.
