The place used be good. The prices have doubled and the food is terrible. My plate of country ham was more like burnt Canadian bacon. The little dish of french fries would not feed a third grader. They are survivng on past reputation. Skip

I have been here many times and it's always great!
The pies are wonderful as are the ribs!
A must try for anyone who has not had the pleasure.

In the past we have been fans of Mama Dips. We had dinner there last night and what a waste of time and money. The food was not good and the cost was too high. On top of that, the service wasn't good. What a disappointment to see this

Mama Dip's is not fancy but it sure is good. I love the chicken fried steak platter and it always hits the spot. The servers are kind and easy going. Dips is what it is, and I am a forever fan.

I have been to Mama Dips for the past two mother's day. The first, I brought my mother and the second I brought my mother and father in-law. My mother, which is great southern cook herself, thought that the meal was ok. My Mother-in-Law thought the meal was great and we saw Mama Dip on that visit. My view is that the food is Southern and with Southern food its like a snow flake always different. So if you are use to Southern Food then you might like it you might think its just ok, but either way the food is good. If your use to contemporary resturants then this isn't the place. Very Southern styled and sometimes that is perfect! I enjoyed both times that I came. I'm hoping that someone at Mama Dips start seeking improvement advise from the customers. The place is to special to let some little annoyances drive people away

Since I moved to NC I have heard of Mama Dip's. Six years later, my husband and I ate there today and I can say for sure we will not make the trip from Cary to Chapel Hill again for this restaurant. The hostess and waitress were almost rude in their lack of attention. I ordered a diet soda. The restaurant was clearly out of syrup and was serving soda from 2 liter bottles without telling customers. The soda was completely flat! I took only one sip and then left the glass untouched! We ordered breakfast; sausage had no flavor; fried chicken was dry even though covered with brown gravy which tasted like flour. My eggs were not cooked as ordered, and I actually asked for one egg and received two cooked incorrectly - technically overcharged based on what I actually ordered. The biscuits tasted like they were either from frozen or out of a tube. Not one employee asked us if everything was okay until it was time to hand us the check. I might have complained if I thought I might come back, but this was one of the most disappointing meals ever so I didn't bother.
Maybe it was a bad day, but those in charge of the restaurant should make sure the employees are trained in customer service.

I really hate to bust your bubbles but I alone with 6 of my co workers went to Mama Dips a couple of weeks ago and I was appalled at the service. The attitudes of the waitress as well as the young lady who I understand is her daughter was unbelievable. I was a little concerned about how I was charged ($9.95 for two drumsticks and two sides) and I was told by the cashier (daughter of owner) and I quote "WELL WE HAVE PEOPLE COME IN HERE AND PAY MORE THAN THAT" I could not believe that she said that. What have we become when we do not care how we treat people because we can get someone else to pay us more?????????? I am totally discouraged from ever visitng this place again!!!!As a young high school student I freguented this place long before they became soooo FAMOUS!! Can you imagine being the only african american with 5 of your white co workers(who might I remind you loved this place and we went @ twice a month from Durham)and being treated like your money does not matter??? The people on this bolg who "LOVES: this place either can NOT cook or have not been introduced to REAL homecooking???? (SAD)

Cons: Nasty attitudes from employees/ Overpriced menu

Went there for lunch.

For all of the positive press you would think they would get something right.
I would rather not eat than to go back there.
Would not go back for any reason, anytime, no how.
How they stay in business is beyond me.

I grew up in this area but had never been to Mama Dips. Lately I've been trying to visit restaurants in this area that I've never been. I had read a review of Mama Dips here, and was disapointed, thinking that person's experience must have been an isolated incident- we are in the South and surely this place was better than that!
My husband, 6 year old daughter and my best friend went on a Saturday for lunch. Our waitress had no personality and never smiled the entire time, in fact she acted as if we were bothering her to be there..

I was also surprised at the prices right away- I didn't think they would be so pricey- just for lunch. My husband was out of his mind and paid $11 for a chopped BBQ plate. I got the chicken and dumplins and it was kind of runny and I think I like CB better. My daughter's meal was a waffle and it was ok- but we paid $2 extra for a drink for her- and the kids meal was $5- so $7 just for a 6 year old... is kind of a lot for a lunch. My husband's black eyed peas were a little overdone with no flavor. The okra was good but not anything special.
All in all I was also disapointed. I think this seems to be a restaurant where people go thinking it would be better- and then are surprised, that they too, think it was just ok. We ended up paying about $35 for lunch and I normally wouldn't have paid that much, just for a mediocre lunch. Well, at least I can cross this place off my list.

Pros: Comfort food, but could get this same type at other country restaurant chains- just as good.,.

Cons: Unfriendly wait staff, food just so-so,

The best fried chicken anywhere! Lovely atmosphere and good service. The Pecan pie is to die for.
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Price is reasonable.

I was so excited when I first saw Mama Dip on the food net work channel. I immediately called my brother who lives in Chapel Hill and asked him if he had ever been to the restaurant. He said no but that his girlfriend had. I talked with her and lost all the excitement when she started telling me all of the negative stories about Ms. Council. But I believe in finding out for myself. My sisters and I have a monthly meeting and a while back I encouraged everyone to go to Mama Dips. Oh was I in for a rude awakening. Upon entering the restaurant we were lead to our seats and I saw Mama Dip sitting at a table with some of her customers. When I entered the room, I took out my cell phone to use the camera to take a picture of our group going into the room to be seated and I said oh there is Mama Dip. She did not even acknowlege our presence but in a forceful voice said to me that she hated to see people using cell phones and that she had other customers in the restauarant. I never put the phone to my ear nor did she ear me say anything on the phone, I only wanted to take of picture of the monumental occassion or so I thought. She immediately got up and left the dinning area without even greeting her customers. I was so embarassed when my group looked at me and said why did you bring us here. I apologized and could not believe what I had just witnessed. One of the wait staff looked at us as if to apologize for the rude behavior of this woman. The food was not tasty at all. I couldn't believe that we actually stayed to eat. I had my 87 year old mother with me and didn't want her to have to walk some where else. Everything my brother's girlfriend said about her was true. I had to find out the hard way. Shame on her for treating her customers with such disrespect. I will never go again or refer anyone.

I visited Mama Dips on 080308. This was my first time and the food was delicious. The service was promt by the waiter and waitress. The food was hot and tasty when brought to the tables. We were a party of about 20 and there were no complaints. We did have to wait for some appetizers but they were hot and fresh when received. Because of the size of our group we called ahead and they were ready to serve us when we arrived. I recommend Mama Dips and will go again when I'm in the area.

Cons: May be too Southern for non-southerners

I personally have never worked there, however I know five people who hates working there. I thought SLAVERY was over. Her employees never get raises or breaks. She needs to be reviewed be the Labor Law. They are treated poorly and not trained properly on customer service.

If you like those little resturants that remind you of place you used to go after church to eat, say Grand ma's house, then Mama Dips is the place. Greens, Fried chicken, old fashioned macaroni & cheese, cobbler, pound cake, black eyed peas, great hospitality. Mama Dips was worth the trip from Ohio! Keep up the good work Mama Dip! Plus, Mama Dip herself was dining in the regular dining room like we were. What a great touch!

This was my first and last visit. I only wish I'd read these reviews before going. Service staff was extremely rude and it starts at the top! Mildred has NO concept of customer service, though she did take time out her busy schedule to come SCREAM at my table for asking for our food (for which we waited an hour and were STILL waiting while she screamed at us). The food is marginal at best the staff is rude and unpleasant....what a shame!

The staff was lazy, inconsiderate, hostile and thoughtless. Mama Dip was unbelievable, defensive and appauling. Never, ever, ever consider eating here. The food is horrible, service is worst and the owner has an attitude out of this world. I wish I had been warned about this place, therefore Im warning others. Danger -- proceed with caution!!!

Mama Dips taste just like your "Mama" would cook on a cold holiday. The food reminds me of soul food cooking. With every bit you are reminded that you are in the south and we eat for comfort.

We've been twice for dinner recently and thought Mama Dip's was pretty good, although overpriced. The Brunswick Stew is good and the barbequed pork is OK, although the 'que is a little mushy and overly dressed with a sweetish red sauce. Macaroni and cheese was good, fried okra was from frozen, fries were undercooked and tasteless, baked apples were great, and the stewed tomato casserole was excellent (although dessert-level sweet). The service has been very good both times, one of which involved a group of six when the dining room was full. The iced tea (unsweetened) was exceptional. The room is cheery and very clean. $11.95 for stew and 'que is high compared to Bullock's, but the restaurant is nicer and so are the servers. $2.95 for a tiny dish of pickles or hushpuppies is kind of silly. Parking is easy if their lot isn't full and there was no wait either evening we went. We will go again, even though the "tourist tariff" makes everything 25% more expensive than it would be in a real country place.

Having heard about Mama Dips for years, I finally made it to Chapel Hill yesterday. The chicken and dumplings were decent but the macaroni and cheese was flavorless and cheeseless. The collard greens were canned and needed seasoning. The sweet tea tasted old. I was very disappointed. The staff was exceptionally rude. I won't be making a great attempt to go again. I was certainly disappointed.

I had heard that this was the place to go for great soul food in Chapel Hill. After 3.5 years of living here, my mom and I finally found our way over there, filled with anticipation and excitement at what we thought would be a culinary and cultural experience. The menu looked interesting and we decided to order different foods so we could share. We put in our order and we sat, and sat, and sat...and, well, you get the idea. We tried to get the waiter's attention but to no avail. When he FINALLY came over, he was dismayed that we were questioning why we didn't have our food after 4-5 tables who had arrived after us were gleefully chomping down theirs. He barely even stayed long enough for me to finish my sentence. He didn't go straight to the kitchen. He just stood and had a good, long chat with some customers. After he finally went to the kitchen, he came out as quickly as he had gone in. Had we offended him in asking for our food 45 minutes after ordering? Had our tone not been sweet enough? We finallly spotted him pulling something out of his pocket and sending it back to the kitchen. I was positive it was our order. After another 15 minutes and my mom and I were going to soon need an ambulance because our sugar had dropped to dangerous levels, a couple of plates of food were thrown in front of us without so much as an attempt at an apology. Okay, it was FINALLY here. We started in and both just didn't want to say anything to the other...eventually, we could no longer keep it in. The food was HORRIBLE! My mother's chicken and dumplings were gluey and had that raw poultry taste. My barbecued beef was positively disgusting. Good thing there were some tolerable side dishes on the table. We pushed them down and waited forever for our check. When I went to the cash register to pay, I let the woman know that the service had been very poor and the waiter quite rude. She just looked at me. Go if you insist, but don't say I didn't warn you!

I've eaten here on two separate occasions... both of which I experienced good service, but pretty mediocre to poor food. I have absolutely no idea how the citysearch reviewer calls the biscuits light and fluffy, when on both occasions they were extremely dense and dry - kinda like hockey pucks. The fried chicken was pretty dry... the side dishes not very flavorful. Other menu items like barbeque are much better had elsewhere. The pecan pie was decent. I have absolutely no desire to come here again - not out of a bad experience, but really, there are other, better options.

I had a terrible dining experience when I went to Mama Dips for breakfast. I ordered eggs over-easy and dry toast. They served bread that was not toasted and the egg yokes were hard. The service was bad. The food was bad. This was the worst breakfast I have been served in the nine years I have lived in Chapel Hill. I will not go back to Mama Dips.

The service was bad. The food was bad. This was the worst breakfast I have been served in the nine years I have lived in Chapel Hill. I will not go back to Mama Dips.

Cons: bad food, bad service

.

You can't find better friend chicken anywhere in Chapel Hill - or beyond, for that matter. I absolutely love this place. The decor is simple and, when they're busy, the service can be lacking. But everything is forgiven when I dive into a plate of homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans! Their desserts are awesome, too - especially the homemade cobblers and pies.

Visited Mama Dip's on Tuesday, Dec 20, for dinner. The food was delicious! I had the chicken dinner with fried okra and yams and a steeaming mug of apple cider! YUM! My friend had liver and onions (she said that it was so tender she didn't even need a knife), potato salad, and zucchini casserole....and a mug of steaming pineapple cider! She said that it was all delicious!! The service was promt and friendly. The atmosphere is country and VERY clean. We almost didn't go because of the bad reviews here, but since I have ALWAYS wanted to go there we decided to give it a chance and we were SO GLAD that we had!!!

I moved to Chapel Hill having heard about Mama Dip's on the Food Network. I assumed that someone/some place so "famous" would at least have to be decent so I decided to take my parents when they visited not long after my move. Big mistake. Everything we had was bad except for the cornbread. I'll never go back. The place seems to be overrated.

I grew up on soul food and will just about try anything. I went to this restaurant after seeing mama dips on Oprah so I assumed that it had a certain level of credibility. After getting to the restaurant, I waited in line and browsed the cookbook. Check out the recipe for fried chicken. Flour, salt, pepper, and grease. Wow. The chitterlings were clean as hell, but had no taste. Glory collard greens...if you know anything about soul food, you know that glory collards (canned) are a quick, last minute food hack...or something you get at a college cafeteria with the baked ham that sits for hours in the salty, fat water.

I believe that we should support small businesses, but isn't it amazing what Oprah can do for a business?

With all the critical acclaim I was expecting a lot but cautioned myself to think that Mama Dip probably wasn't doing the cooking so that it might not be perfect. The first time I had breakfast. The sweet potatoe waffle was very delicious and the smothered pork chop was decent. The fried green tomatoes were very bland and my partner grabbed the salt shaker and he never does that. It was pretty expensive though we spent $30 on breakfast and that is a lot for homestyle cooking.

For lunch we went back and had brunswick stew, pork ckops. and catfish. The brunswick stew was flavorless and the very small portion of macaroni and cheese had no cheese. It was just coated in butter. As someone with southern roots it is sad that all my northern classmates think this is what good southern food should taste like.

Mama Dip's was highly recommended by several locals, so me and my friend were really looking forward to having a nice home cooked meal; however, I sincerely believe the folks who recommended this restaurant must of been overcome by the warm beer being served and couldn't clearly remember their meals.

I ordered the 'House Specialty' of Chicken and Dumplings and it was awful. My friend commented that the Fried Chicken and Bar-BQ Ribs were equally bad--Bar-BQ sauce was more tomato paste and lacked any spice and the chicken was greasy.

Service is non-existent, unless you consider having a beer dropped on you as being attentive. Save your money as well as your time... this place is terrible!

The food here was always good but the service is and always has been TERRIBLE! However we must keep in mind that most of the staff here seem to be family members of the owner so what can she do, fire them??!!

All in all, the portions have gotten smaller and the prices have gotten higher thus making this restaurant one to avoid.

Just returned, Dips was most certaily on the agenda. It was still great. Fried chicken was the best with sides to match. Just to sit on the porch and enjoying a great southern meal was the reason we went.

I enjoy the place for dinner, fried chicken with gravy is a good bet and the pickles on the table rock. But it is a little pricey considering this should be a bargain place. Now it is like a tourist trap. And don't bother for breakfast. It is nothing special and very expensive. And they don't have biscuits and gravy.

We read the bad recent reviews and were scared but chanced it anyway. Glad we did! Dip's has not changed much in the last couple years, in our view. Fried chicken, Brunswick stew, bbq, and catfish still awesome. (Not a full bbq joint, however.) It's not the cheapest (9.95 for a 3-piece great chicken dinner) but it's worth it and we were filled. Sides of turnip greens, black-eyed peas, okra and tomatoes, and cornbread all excellent. Clean floors and tables are always a nice plus too.

My recent visit to Dip's was everything that I expected and more. The fried chicken was crisp and moist with an ample portion. The collards were good and the fried okra was better than any I have ever had. My wife's chicken and pastry was also very good but I still suggest the fried chicken!! The pecan pie was warm and delicious. All in all a wonderful experience. PS I found the service to be very efficient and our waitress was very attenetive.

We'll never visit this establishment again. The portions are small and the wait staff is rude. They need to remember how good they used to be.
Don't believe the hype.

My friends and I decided to take out another friend for his birthday to Mama Dips. We waited for an outrageous amount of time for our tables, but we excused it because we were a group of 10. However, our service reflected our wait. We waited for menus, we waited for drinks and we waited for our food. After all of the waiting and anticipating, our food came out, and we were decidedly let down! The portions were small and the food wasn't exciting. Finally, to top it all off, they REFUSED to allow us to eat the birthday cake we had brought with us. We all gave a big thumbs down!!

Dip's used to be one of my favorite places to eat. But last time, I had much less than a positive experience. A couple of weeks ago, my husband, myself, and our baby waited for 30 minutes to be seated. We were placed in a TINY booth barely big enough for two adults, much less two adults plus a curious baby in a high chair! We asked to be moved somewhere else so that the baby wouldn't pull our hot food into his lap. We mentioned we were willing to wait longer for a bigger table. We were told told that we could NOT have a bigger table... that the big tables were needed for larger groups (even though there was another couple at a large booth with a baby at that very moment). She was very rude and didn't care... so we left! It was a horrible experience.

I agree with the last several reviewers here. When I came to Chapel Hill I had heard wonderful things about Dips. I was eager to try it out. I was very disappointed by the price, portion sizes, friendliness of staff, etc. I still wonder how this place got its fabulous reputation. The food was mediocre at best. This is not a good location for a group setting unless one person wants to pay for everyone since they do not split checks. Save money, go somewhere else instead.

Where are these bad reviews coming from? The food is the same quality it has been for years...I know, I've been a regular for 16 years. I took some very Southern friends there just a few weeks ago and everyone enjoyed the food tremendously, AND commented on how it tasted just like, "their grandmother's cooking." The prices are a *bit* higher than I think they should be, but that has been the case since I first started eating there...and it hasn't kept me away yet!

It is instructive to see the nosedive the ratings at Dip's have taken over the past year. I took my parents there early last spring. Service was slow, the food was mediocre (at best) and everything was WAY over-priced. I've eaten at Dip's in the past, and the change is quite noticeable. This is a place riding on its reputation. I really hope they can turn it around.

If you go, don't expect great service, or gourmet meals. DO expect the best fried chicken around, slow-cooked (yes, that means your green beans will be soft, not crisp) vegetables, southern desserts, and sweet iced tea. Wear your shorts and flip-flops, sit on the porch, and RELAX. Type A's should stay away. It's gonna take a while, but if you know what to order, you'll have a great southern meal in a very casual setting. And be sure you go to breakfast for the wonderful biscuits, chicken and gravy, and salmon cakes. By the way, if you don't have the backbone to sign your review, you shouldn't be submitting it, and, while we're on the subject, CITYSEARCH SHOULD STOP POSTING ANONYMOUS REVIEWS!!!!!

I went expecting real Southern Food. The chicken livers were overcooked, the corn was full kernal canned, the other vegs also tasted canned. To have all the publicity, I would have expected freshly cooked food.

This is mediocre Southern food served up in a room that feels like a church social hall. The porch is nice and the desserts are good, but there really is better and cheaper home-cookin' in the Triangle.
