I have shopped at Friendly Center for more than 30 years, and my title comment has always been true. It's had more than one face lift in that time, and you can find nearly anything there -- restaurants, clothing, books, electronics, fresh roasted coffee and bulk coffee beans, kitchen gadgets -- at both national chains (Macy's, Barnes and Noble) and local stores (The Extra Ingredient, Schiffman's Jewelers). I can't say with any certainty that there are any mom-and-pop stores left; I think the truly small and unique places have been squeezed out by the growth.

There's still a movie theater there, the Grande, which is one of the modern cineplexes with stadium seating. It's nice and comfortable and expensive. I miss the old Janus, which had as many screens, was more cramped, but had character.

The traffic there between Thanksgiving and just after New Year's is insane. If you can, park on the perimeter and WALK.

I don't like to shop at all, but I don't mind this shopping center. It's got almost every place I'd need to go for my non grocery shopping and it's easy to get around in. A madhouse at Christmas, but, what place isn't, and they do have traffic control and a little trolley that will take you to the different stores that are not in the area in which you parked, so you only really have to look for one parking place and that's a great thing. The list of stores, well, a sample would be Barnes and Noble, Belk, Macy's, Old Navy, Bath and Body Works, Pier One, Catherine's, The Extra Ingredient, Schiffman's Jewelers, and Radio Shack and I'm leaving out about 25 stores and all the restaurants and the bakery. Sears is right across the street, there's a small post office right as you pull in from Friendly Avenue, and a theater behind Sears. You could spend the entire day here if you wanted and then stop right next door at the new Shops at Friendly and pick up groceries at the Taj Ma Teeter (the humongous Harris Teeter) Get it all at once and get home. If you're like me, you'll only spend the day if you're with relatives or friends that are pulling you along, but you won't hate it.
