We went the haven in Raeford to look for a dog, When we got there we were horrified to how these animals were living and everyone that worked there barely spoke english besides the owner. We did end up adopting a loving adorable dog she is amazing. But when we got there the lady who runs the place was so rude to us and her employees. We wanted to look around because we were not sure what kind of dog we wanted. When we took our new dog to the vet the next day we spent over 300 because the dog was extremely sick!!! I'm so happy we adopted our dog cause she clearly wasn't getting the treatment she needed. She is slowly getting better but it is crazy that this lady is aloud to take in all these animals but is not taking care of them properly! I feel so bad for the animals at the haven.

I have volunteered for over 15 years with this shelter. They save the animals that will be otherwise put to sleep...yes, she has 800 or so animals...but they are sheltered, fed, watered, and vaccinated. Where in any other case they would be immediately put to sleep. They do amazing things here... Of the almost 30 years they have been open, we have adopted out OVER 30,000 ANIMALS. that would more than likely BE PUT TO SLEEP. Please support our cause and our shelter

Long story short...my boyfriend and I had volunteered on an early Saturday morning (7am) to "help bathe and groom the animals." We had never been to the site before and we were in for a big surprise. All the "negative" comments about The Haven are true!!! I had never felt so angry and sad to see these animals suffering. Think of a "puppymill". That's exactly what it is for both the cats and dogs. There were so many dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that were obviously sick and were left unnoticed and/or untreated. The director or whomever she is, Linden, she is very rude! Because she was pressed for time, we were not able to clean the crates or bathe the "adoptable" dogs, she just had us load them in the crates with filth and all. Anyway, I'm so glad we had "rescued" our lab-mix from this hell hole. I did not know he came from this horrible place...The Haven needs to have someone whom can be responsible and care more adequately for all the animals.

Horrible! I called them to find out my cats' microchip number because he's missing, and the lady just yelled at me over the phone and told me how horrible I was, She finally gave me his microchip number, then continued to yell at me and tell me how horrible I was. Then she had the nerve to hang up on me. I would never recommend anyone go to the Haven.

We adopted Boots over a year ago from the Haven. The process was courteous and very clear. We received a month of free pet insurance and a free office visit with Banfield inside petsmart. Our Boots was healthy and everything was up to date. He is the sweetest and most loving kitty ever. My husband and I are both now very active volunteers for the Haven to help ensure that every cat and dog possible is placed in a home that is healthy and loving. The Haven strives to keep growing and expanding to house and care for all the animals and pets irresponsible pet owners throw away. I have watched Linden rescue animals that the other shelters would have just killed because it was too much trouble and too expensive to handle. She constantly works towards improving the Haven and her Volunteers strive to place every animal. Strive to help the animals and volunteer your time to help improve things for them... I encourage you and challenge all of you to see first hand what we do and how many changes and how much good we do for the animals.

"Spay/neutering and other procedures are performed in a shed with very little pain relief or follow up care. Many of the animals adopted out end up with HUGE vet bills after adoption due to the poor medical care or careless surgery they recieved". This was taken from another post on here. This is true. We adopted a dog from there, and when we picked her up she was completely infected. It resulted in us taking her to our vet and $400.00 later she was fixed with antibiotics, and new sutures for healing. Complete negligence at the Haven......

I adopted two beautiful dogs from The Haven nine years ago. Charley was a beagle/cocker that someone prior to me had adopted and instead of returning her to the haven they brought her to the pound. She was to be destroyed, for the second time The Haven had saved her. She was covered in Ticks, they said it was from the previous owners leaving her out and I believed them. I'm sure things are not perfect, and sometimes are horrible, but why not focus on the fact that The Haven is trying to save lives and do good for out four legged loved ones. The only thing I do have a problem with is I heard when The Haven was having problems she didn't want to adopt out of state, and I come from New York. I was only in NC visiting with my sister. She would have been doing a great injustice to have deprived my dogs the home that they have been given. And so I must wonder how many others she has deprived for that reason.

I spent many months volunteering for The Haven and in those months, I was horrified at what I saw. I began volunteering there due to my love of animals. I continued volunteering there (once I realized the horrors that were occuring) so that I could have first hand information and would be able to pass it onto others. The animals are kept in absolutely deplorable conditions. There are oftentimes 4-5 dogs per kennel, that are left for days in their own urine and feces. Many of these dogs and cats are flea and tick infested but are left untreated until the funds become available. The animals are left to suffer. Spay/neutering and other procedures are performed in a shed with very little pain relief or follow up care. Many of the animals adopted out end up with HUGE vet bills after adoption due to the poor medical care or careless surgery they recieved. Linden Spear (the owner of The Haven) is an incredibly unfriendly woman who fits the desrciption of a hoarder for profit. She specifically hires non-English speaking workers because they are less likely to talk to the press (which has gone after her several times in the past.) She also doesnt allow many volunteers onto the compound for the same reason. She prefers that volunteers just help with adoption day at Petsmart to help keep her 'dirty secrets' under wraps. She pays the migrant workers with fundraiser money, instead of allowing English speaking volunteers to help at no charge. My husband and I thought that we were doing a good thing by fostering animals, volunteering, doing laundry etc. but found out that this place needs to be shut down IMMEDIATELY!

I recently came across the BBB's review of The Haven from December 2010. On a scale of A+ to F, they recieved a D.

I went to the Haven back in 2008 to adopt a dog. Upon arriving, I couldn't believe what I saw. There were so many animals! The barn they had was just stacked wall to wall with the small carrying crates with kittens and puppies. Then you walked out to see the older dogs in cages.. 4-5 per pen. It was heartbreaking. I did end up adopting a dog for $150, who was said to be all of these great qualities.. potty trained.. friendly.. etc. Well he wasn't and I had to bring him back because it was that bad. They were suppose to give my money back (which I would've donated some of it back to them) and they never did. Come to find out, that same dog was sent to PetSmart that morning and my neighbor adopted him for $150 as well. So I was very disappointed in their services. I hope things get better for those animals there.

I have been Volunteering for The Haven-friends for life for over 8 years. I have seen a lot of changes in those 8 years for the good. I have seen over 8000 animals get fore ever homes and every time I see it it touches my heart. And yes we still need improvements, but who doesn't. So come check us out at Petsmart in Fayetteville on the weekends.

This is a wonderful non-profit and animal rescue organization! The Haven-Friends for Life works tirelessly to save, treat, spay/neuter & re-home over 30,000 dogs & cats over the last 12-13 years in North Carolina, a state which has the 3rd highest euthanasia rate in the nation. It is a private no-kill shelter saving all healthy & treatable animals. The Haven saves animals on death-row in county animal controls & it relies entirely on donations & grants, receiving no government or public funding. Like most private animal shelters relying only on the generosity of its donors, everyday is a struggle to stay open & continue its good work.

I stumbled upon the Haven 4 years ago when I was desperate to find a shelter to take in a stray puppy I had found. The Haven was the only shelter in a 100 mile radius open on the weekend and could assure me that the puppy would not be put to sleep as long as it was healthy or treatable, plus that every effort would be made to find it a good home. They did all they promised and, later, I began volunteering there.

I have seen the struggles, but I have also seen an organization which adopts-out an average of 100 animals each month because of its aggressive adoption program. The Haven shelter opens its doors to potential adopters 7 days a week, offering evening & weekend adoption hours, as well as taking many of its "adoption ready" animals off-site and to the public each & every weekend. In addition, the Haven eagerly participates in as many other off-site, public adoption events as possible. I am one of over 100 regular volunteers & am so very proud to be a part of this organization!

Well 1st off i arrived WITHOUT a appt and was horrified with what i saw there..
1> Crates Upon Crates Stacked on top one another 4-5 in a row
2>the smell was Horrendous due to animals in those crates sitting around in there own mess
3>looked in on 3-4 animals and i could see the fleas running over the animals
4>the all mexican staff could speak NO ENGLISH
5>the lady there was rude and nasty because i didnt have a appointment...
now i know why so she can doll up a few animals you want to see and take them out so you can not see how they are living...
I hope the county and the health dept shut them down...how can this be considered saving animal lives...if i was a dog there i would rather be put down
