We happened on this place by accident - while driving around Raleigh. Had no idea until we parked and went in -- not lavishley decorated. But the food and service was great. 45 mins after arrival place filled up. Upon leaving there was a long line outside the front entrance.
They must be doing something right. We've visited other (Fish) restaurants in Florida/California -- no complaints here!

I have heard of this restaurant so I gave it a try on Saturday 2/6/10. I had a coupon from the mail for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more. My bill was $24.98 and they did NOT even honor the $5. The portions were extremely small too. For the price and the fact that its baby shrimp, fish, etc...and fried, I expected to be able to take home leftovers, however, I did not. The food was good but not for the price. I will not be dining here anymore as I felt since my bill was $24.98, $0.02 shy of $25 and not having my $5 coupon honored, this is not a place I want to spend my money.

After 25+ years of this being the best seafood in town with the speediest service, I have darkened the door for the final time. The tipoff should've been when, on the first Saturday evening of the month at 6:30, there was no line. Time was, we'd happily wait the better part of an hour for a table.

The food was overcooked, service sluggish (table beside us waited 45 minutes for fish!), servers confused and that was with dining room < 1/2 full! Slaw, brunswick, potato salad were poor imitations of how it used to be. New owners must've cleaned house. Well, they cleaned us out for sure--an extended family of two dozen big eaters has eaten its last Captain Stanley meal. What a shame. Thanks for the memories.

I thought that I would try this restaurant since it just moved into my neighborhood. When I went there I was greeted by friendly people and smiling faces. Everyone was so nice and went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The server that I had was wonderful. He brought me everything that I need without me having to ask for anything. The food was absolutely amazing and the prices were very reasonable. I encourage you to try this place out for yourself.

Pros: Great food and Great service!

North Raleigh location:
The food was fine, the wait staff fairly attentive. Seating was a disaster for a group of four to six at lunch. They set up two tables for us and then gave them to another group. They tried to put us in two booths. Five of us crowed into a small booth for four with a chair at the end. The real kicker was the combination section of the menu which is very ambiguous at best. A request for clarification was satisfied and we ordered a combo, one item, and added oysters. The charge was for two items plus oysters at $2. The menu reads "Add oysters (and a couple other items) for $2,00. They are so practiced at explaining it after the fact, that it has to be intentional. Only after suggesting to the manager that we meet in small claims court did they give in, and they they were very gracious about it. I am not sure our group was that satisfied with their succumbing to our complaints.

Pros: food

Cons: menu, seating

First opportunity to try out a new place. Good food with reasonable prices but the wait staff and management were a reason not to go back. Reception was cool at best and customer seating with reasonable time was a mere idea not reality. Large party of guests unhappy about being split up literally left standing in the middle of dining area waiting to be dealt with.
Dining room floor was filthy - spilled ice left for several minutes before picked up! Yuck.
Will think twice about going back and or recommending.

Tonight was the opener for the new North Raleigh location of Captain Stanely's Calabash. It's been a long time coming for a local Calabash Style Seafood restaurant on this side of town. The food was absolutely flawless. I had the large baby flounder platter which included 10 pieces of fish (fried to order), potato wedges, the vegetable of the day (Lima Beans) and a good modest portion of hushpuppies. All for 10 bucks and change. Fast service, great food (made to order), and large portions for a reasonable price. Outstanding job on your opening night.

The last time I ate at Captain Stanley's I found a hair in my food and the only thing the manager said to me was "there is no one in our kitchen with hair like that" and then he says as he walks away "ya'll have a good day".

The line can get crazy but it is worth the wait. I love the seafood here. Lots of food and the price is good. Service is quick and friendly. Any of the combination platters are great and they actually serve vegetables on the side!

This place gets packed on the weekend! Their speciality is their fried seafood. Portions are plentiful. Prices are reasonable. Come early to beat the crowd.

I have been going to Captain Stanley's for as long as I can remember, and I have never been disappointed. They always have great seafood and they are usually running a special so you can share a meal for a good price. I love their fried shrimp in particular. It can take a LONG time to be seated due to the popularity of this restaurant, but it's worth the wait!

When in Raleigh and looking for a seafood restaurant who understands seafood and service look no further than Captain Stanleys. Fabulous customer service. Delicious menu specialties. Affordable with a capital A! Be careful around lunch time the line can wrap around the building! Get there early or just after noon to avoid the loyal crowd sea foodies.

Me and my husband has eaten at Caption Stanley's for years. The food is really good and when two adults can eat for less than $25.00 I consider that a good buy. We both really like seafood and we have eaten at most of the seafood resturants in this area and we like the food and the prices at Caption Stanley's the best in the area. We have not ever had bad service we find the service to be as good as any other resturant of this price range.

I placed two take out orders tonight and boy, was I disappointed! I ordered a seafood platter for myself and a senior citizen plate for my Mother which both came to over $20 and I still used a $2 off coupon but the portions were not adequate amounts at all. We definitely did 'not' get our money's worth! The fish was very small on both orders and they gave only one piece. The senior plate that had the oysters only had maybe 6 or 7 oysters max and they also were very small. Maybe they serve larger portions when you eat inside but they really skimp on the take outs in my opinion so guess I won't be ordering take out again from Captain Stanley's.

Pros: Fast Service, good tasting food

Cons: Pricey for the amount of food, sometimes hard to find parking

I've eaten here take out style several times. The food is excellent. A little on the pricey side but well worth it for the amount of food that you get.

The service stinks. Double check your order because mine have never been right.

I have eaten at Capt. Stanley's for a number of years. It's about the only place in town that my Dad would go to eat fish.
I have always found the food superb! Due to the large crowd some times the service is slow, but it is worth it. I would highly recommend it!
I love the senior citizen flounder plate. We always ask for a second basket of hush puppies, I could make a meal off of them. Best tea in town.

a friend of mine suggested this place (highly) for a while when she heard i was moving to a job right by the restaurant. we met there for lunch and i thought it was fine. i wasn't blown away, but the food was pretty good and the service was fine - kinda quiet. it's not somewhere i would take a large group or plan a party there, but my family would like it as a stop-in-for-fish-craving-meal. it was a pretty decent price for what i ate - and i like that there are daily specials. parking is a little odd, but it was okay as a total experience. i'm sure ill eat there again - i love hushpuppies! :-)

I've eaten here often for weekday lunch, and food has been good for the price. However, we have never had a great waitress. Today was the worst; the regular cook was out, and the broiled shrimp was nearly burnt. Complaints were made to the waitress, who was actually one of the better ones we've met. She apologized and offered to take it back; we didn't have time (the service was slower than usual as well). I didn't eat mine, and we complained again to the clerk. Again, apologies were given, but no offers to reduce the price, give a free meal or dessert - nothing. We left, not wanting to start a stink. Given the average food quality (the brunswick stew is awful), lack of vegetable choices, and average to poor service, I'd rather eat at Wendy's.

I live out of town in Louisburg and always eat at Capt Stanley's whenever I go to Raleigh, and have always had prompt courteous service there. Their food is always delicious and they always have out the welcome mat. Seating is prompt, and service is superb. They have delicious shrimp, my favorite! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Recently, I wanted to give a friend gift certificates from Capt Stanley's for a belated birthday gift. I called the restaurant from Louisburg, and used my debit/credit card for the certificates and they arrived promptly 3 days later.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I would certainly give this restaurant a 12! It is a very special place to go. So go there, get your fish, and have a wonderful time with your family. Kate Felton

I have been an avid seafood fan since I was younger and living at Wrightsville Beach and when I relocated here I needed to find a great seafood place for me to eat. I have tried many places and then one of my friends reccommended Captain Stanley's. The service was great and I got my food very quickly. After the first time I was there, I was hooked. I go there all the time now and I got to know the owner who is the sweetest woman I have ever met and she is willing to accomodate her customers needs. She always comes out to greet me. The food there is by far the best I have ever had and there is a huge amount of variety so I never get tired of it. If you love incredible seafood at an incredible price than this is the place for you.
