What a delight. I went with my eight year old picky eater, and he loved it. The staff was very good, very friendly. The bread was fabulous and the calamari some of the best I've ever had. My son had the cheese pie and loved it. This was a great family restaurant that I will certainly frequent in the future.

This restaurant is a real treasure! As noted by the other reviewers, the food is excellent and authentic. The ambiance is wonderful, the staff always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

I highly recommend the chef's specials, as we have had a number of intensely pleasureable experiences by ordering those.

Taverna Agora is a definite favorite for us, always a special treat.

This is my favorite fancy restaurant in Raleigh. The food is fantastic--classic Greek dishes and some modern twists. The service is always wonderful and the service is perfect. Order a bottle of wine and enjoy!

Just ate here last weekend and loved it. The food was excellent, our waiter was so helpful and the atmosphere was great - unlike any other restaurant in the area. I felt like I was in Greece!

Disappointment, best describes our first dining experience at Taverna Agora where it seems like the term customer is always right does not apply. The decor is quaint and welcoming the hostess/manager is far from that. \r

Three years ago, this place was where my wife and I had our first date. We loved it. Since then, we have celebrated Valentine's, anniversaries, stolen nights away from the children, and many other happy occasions at Taverna's. The food is incredible, and the atmosphere is always wonderful. Sometimes, it can be a bit too loud or festive on belly dancing nights, but even on such nights, there is plenty of time for intimate conversation over a great glass of wine and candlelight. The staff has been great, and I have never had a bad experience there nor has any of the many people I have recommended to Taverna. Highly recommend this wonderful restaurant.

I write a ton of reviews and this one is tough. The place has a great feel to it(aside from the heat). The food full of flavor. But the most important part of a night out will ALWAYS be service. I witnessed multiple people just standing there waiting to be sat. None of them were even spoke to. This was our first time to Taverna and we almost walked out at the host station. The woman whom FINALLY sat us had to be related to the owners or something if not one of them. She didn't appear to have a welcoming bone in her body. The most important thing I've learned from previous years in the reastaurant biz is that the most important person in the restaurant is the host/hostess. They provide the first impression and in most cases the last. The lack of care seemed to be passed on to the service staff. If the hostess is an owner(friend of,or family) Please pass the torch and hope that revitalizes the rest of the staff.
It will be a place we revisit. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I too have read the previous reviews and find them hard to believe as well especially since My wife and I were there as well. We had a delightful evening that night with no problems. Let me tell you about my experience with the event. We arrived amd were seated in an outside area that had obviously been prepared for us. Upon seating we were immediately greated by our waiter and the woman doing the wine tasting. This was no ordinary event they brought out tons of great appetizers and spent time with every group of people describing the wines and even helping us pronounce them properly. All of this was only $25. I for one found it to be a great value and will gladly go again to their next event. I found the manager to be gracious and delightful in is demeanor and enjoyed the entire evening.

First of all, I would just like to say that I am extremely surprised by the amount of negative comments about this restaurant. Everyone I know that has dined at this restaurant has nothing but wonderful things to say, and I couldn't agree more.

Upon entering the restaurant, the atmosphere captivates you - vines winding on a trellis and decorated with twinkle lights create the perfect mood for a romantic night out, or even a lovely evening with family and/or friends. The bar is a beautiful area, showing off their assortment of wines, and the wine barrels hanging from above offer a traditional look of an actual Greek tavern. I have had the pleasure of traveling to Greece before, and I can say that Taverna Agora does a fantastic job at capturing the feel of Greece.
The patio outside is my absolute favorite part of the restaurant. Vines covered with twinkle lights wind up and down the outer-edge of the patio and make you feel like you are dining in a mediterranean paradise. Weather-permitting, the patio is definitely the way to go!

Next, the food is phenomenal! You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu - I have been many times and have tried a variety of things on the menu, and I am never not satisfied. If there is ever a whole fish on special, it is a must! I have tried 2 of the whole fish that Taverna has had on special, and they have been simply fantastic...I feel almost as if I am sitting by the waters edge in Greece and feasting on a whole fish caught right in the ocean beside me and just freshly cooked. As far as red meat goes, I recommend the Lamb Shank!

The servers present a desert tray after the entrees, enticing their guests with sweets by allowing them to view their desert (which is definitely better than simply reading it on a menu!!)

Overall, this is one of the best restaurants in Raleigh! The food is made-to-perfection, the service is fantastic, and the atmosphere is beautiful! If you are looking for a night out with your significant other, friends, and/or family, Taverna Agora is definitely the place to go!!

Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Service

We went for the wine tasting event on Wednesday evening and had a wonderful time in the beginning. Food/wine/service was great. When it came time to get our check there was a mix up. Mistakes happen and that was fine. However, after waiting for over an hour for the waiter and manager to straighten things out, we were all a little put out. The waiter apologized but the manager was rude and didn't even offer an apology...nothing...he did not speak to a single patron. Never again.

When my family decided to go to the Food and Wine tasting event, I was very excited to go. I had never been to this restaurant before and although it's a bit of a drive (Garner to NW Glenwood), I was willing to give it a try.

The couple that were responsible for serving the wine were great. They were knowledgeable and very friendly. We were offered four selections.

Heavy appetizers were served as part of the event. All of the food was excellent and we were able to sample close to ten different apps, some that are not on the regular menu. Desert was not included, so we decided to order some.

Here's where the evening plummeted. We waited an unusually long time for the deserts and an even longer time after for the checks (no explanation or apology for the wait). When the checks finally came, the waiter explained that one of them was wrong and he was going to go to back and correct the error. After what seemed like an eternity, we decided to just go inside and wait (we were pushing the 3 hour mark by this point). We tried to go ahead and take care of the correct tickets at the bar, but the bartender was far more interested in watching the Stanley Cup Finals game than helping us and was rather rude in turning us away because "he could not close other staffs tickets". We then stood by the register for a good bit while the manager and our server argued over the bills. Apparently, everyone that had come for the tasting ended up on one ticket and they were having trouble splitting the checks. We were finally allowed to pay and leave.

I think had the manager simply acknowledged our existence while we stood and waited, I would have been a lot less upset. I wasn't after any sort of freebies, although an offer for a least a glass of water would have been nice. In the end we received no discount and no apology (except from our waiter). In fact, after the staff gave up trying to correct the error and just started over, the manager disappeared into the back of the restaurant.

I must say that when the evening started I was excited to go back and try another Wine Tasting event. Sadly, I cannot stomach going to a restaurant where patrons are forced to resort to begging to pay the check. After my 3.5 hour fiasco, I will not be returning.

Pros: Good Food & Atmosphere, Kind of Nice Waitstaff

Cons: Management is TERRIBLE

.

Our party of 5 went for the wine & food tasting. Food & wine was very good and the outdoor seating was perfect. It went downhill fast from there. Once the tasting was over we ordered dessert, 2 glasses of wine & some coffee..it took almost 30 minutes for it to arrive (no apology)..once finished we requested our check...another 30 minute wait, when the checks arrive they were incorrect, mixed up with two other tables of guests seated close by. The waiter said he would fix them and bring them back out. Yet another 30 minutes goes by and we finally just get up and go inside to pay. The manager & waiter are still trying to figure out what went wrong...it took another 15 minutes before we could pay. Manger was obviously mad at the waiter and yet never gave us any sort of apology or even acknowledged our lengthy wait. One should never be kept waiting to pay...the way the situation was handled was very unprofessional...the manager needs to be replaced. After reading other reviews, I can't recommend your going to dine here. I just wish I had read the other reviews before we went.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, but the moment you step in the door you know it's all for show. We werekept waiting at the door for at least 15minutes while the restaurant was nearly empty. When the hostess finally arrived at the door, she did not even apologize for keeping us waiting so long.

They advertised belly dancers and Greek music. The music was blasting from the speakers and the CD kept skipping every few minutes. There were NO bellydancers anywhere.
The server we had was new and unknowledgable, but friendly. However, when we found a piece of plastic in our food the owner/manager was completely rude and unhelpful.

Bill was so obnoxious!! Right in front of us, he actually yelled at the poor server for the mistake (it clearly wasn't her fault). This was completely unprofessional. Bill singlehandedly ruined our meal and our evening. My family and I will NEVER go back to this place...hopefully you won't either.

And to the servers --You really don't have to put up with that kind of abuse!!! You should find a job where they will value your efforts and reward you for them not belittle you in front of the guests (or anywhere else).

We had 7pm reservations & when we arrived, TA was nearly empty except for 2 large parties. The ambiance was pleasant, but things quickly went downhill. Our harried, & inexperienced waiter couldn't talk wines(Mainly Greek vintners) took our drink orders, and delivered 2 beers in bottle, no glasses. We asked for glasses, and later a 2nd beer, again no fresh glass. Both bottles were carried with his hands OVER the openings, one (luckily) was still uncapped. Waiter did not take empty bottles off the table until we literally handed them to him.

We had to ask to order appetizers, then silverware, then for Pita for the dip. Waiter asked if we wanted more bread, then realized he never gave us any! 2 ordered the Filet Mignon & 1 arrived looking , the other was 1/2 the height & 2x length looking just like a RibEye, the other cut on the menu. Tthe owner came over & angrily said "That is what happens when you cook a Filet to MW, it shrinks (I have NEVER seen a filet go from 2" think to 3/4" thick & elongate). It was a RibEye, & he would not concede they made a mistake.

The server came back and said "Did you want dessert?" like he would rather we not. We asked for a dessert menu, and as he was leaving another server walked by with a dessert tray so she passed our order along to the waiter. No coffee or after dinner drinks were offered. The waiter told us there was no belly dancer, and she had not been coming there for some time now.

I should mention that toward the end of the evening I saw 2 HUGE r0a(hes about 1 1/2 - 2" long on the north wall by the paintings (in Florida they call them "Palmetto"). I was too disgusted to tell my fellow diners as dinner had already been such a dismal failure, I couldn't bear for them to know we had taken them to a r0a(h haven.

The bill for the four of us was over $150 for this nightmare. We will NEVER go back there.

The fish was incredibly tasty. Outdoor dining is in a superb setting. The owner(?) greeted us at the door, provided samples of several of his favorite wines. A very pleasant experience at this place. Looking forward to going back.

I think this is one of the best places to get Greek food. The menu is authentic with great weekend specials. The staff does a wonderful job and is always friendly and the bartender pours one hell-of-a drink! The outside patio is very romantic and relaxing with lots of flowers and intament lighting. Saturdays is "Greek Night" with music and a belly dancer to keep you entertained.

Clearly the people who wrote past reviews on Tavera Agora know nothing about greek food. Eating there reminds me of eating form the garbage can behind Greek Feista. The service and atmosphere was fine. Trust me, I know greek food, and Agora clearly does not. Save your money.

I have never had bad service at Taverna Agora, the food is always hot and fresh. We are always seated prompt and on time. If you have a hearty appetite this the place for you, the portions are huge. The food is worth the price you pay. The waiters are always friendly and ready to help with giving you the best service to make your visit one you won't forget. My friends are alway ready to go back to Taverna Agora. The atmosphere is very casual, you would think you are sitting in greece as you dine. There is no other Greek restaurant in Raleigh that is as good as this one. As far as the staff and the chef, they make it a good experience. The waiters at Taverna Agora always tell you their daily special, if you have children they bring special things for them to sample and that is a plus for me. Love it , Love it.

I returned to Taverna this weekend, and me and my girlfriends were happy with what we saw! Hadn't been since June, but happy with the changes noticed! Namely, the old chef gone and a new GM-Bill in place. I was a nay-sayer, but I came for and loved the mood/vibe and the long-time staff that make it Euro/Trendy. I asked about what was up: new menu coming out, Greeknight, and vegetarian is coming back! Sampled a wine, and new app! Yanni and Kevin always treat us as VIP! They are still devoted and love Taverna. Don't know about drunken bare-chestedness. Must have been elsewhere. Do know Ouzo and Retzina are GREEK and the music still transforms you to Hellas! We had self-selected app.'s platter made to order: creamy dips, pita and OPA cheese. We ate/drank well! Patio was beautiful as always! According to one friend, being Greek, you appreciate the feeling of culture. Likewise, me not being Greek and appreciating not being in Applebee's makes Taverna worth it.
Taverna on Glenwood is still a wonderful surprise! They have been through changes, like a bad divorce or a best friend that decieves, but they still offer the feel of Europe, but not the Euro-trash some reviewers say. Go see...

Pros: Ambience, service, food and patio lighting

Cons: Lack of parking when they are packed!

I had dinner here last night and it was wonderful! The bartender Kevin made a great martini, the chef was excellent in his presentation and execution of the meals. I think the place has a special ambiance that puts the customer at ease and prepares you for the cultural experience that awaits you.

I think my waiter was drunk. His shirt was only buttoned about half way up, and he was sweating alot. We weren't sure what to make of it... The food wasn't as good as it used to be. It looked and tasted like leftovers, which I could have had at home for less. None of the servers smiled, except when they were huddled together in their own conversations. This made me feel like I was in high school again. Ive worked in the restaurant business for some time, so maybe my expectations are a little high. I just expected more. I overall thought the food was overpriced for what I had and that the service was a joke. This coming from someone who doesn't mine spending top dollar for a good steak! Bottom Line: Save your time and your money!

We recently returned to Taverna Agora after not being there in about a year. We were so disappointed!!! The menu has shrank, and the prices went up. Some of our favorite dishes were gone, and replaced with bland tasting items you could have at any bistro type restaurant. The succulent seafood risoto which was a true treat with lots of feta, shrimp, tomatoes, spices, and mussels all simmered together in a tasty broth is now called "seafood rice pilaf". Now, Basic wild rice with chunky canned tomatoes and a few shrimp and mussels places around the plate. Had no taste at all and just a small slice of feta. Others had the lamb shank special, which was alright but served with overcooked greenbeans. The place used to be so crowded, and on a Friday night we didn't even have to wait for a seat and half of the inside seating was empty - which should have been our first clue.

I used to be a fan of this restaurant, but recent changes there have been very noticeable, not only to me, but to some of my friends who warned me about the changes. Most noticeable is that their "new" menu drastically reduces the original choices for appetizers and entrees. Portion sizes of both appetizers and dinners have been drastically reduced (now being served on smaller plates, but the prices for some of them have been increased). My Greek stepmother came for a visit (and she was born in Greece, so knows what is good greek food) was extremely disappointed. She thought that the potatoes served were old and not freshly made that day and I had extremely overdone and tough lamb, which was covered up by a white sauce by the chef (no one serves it this way in Greece!). Not sure if the owners got greedy and decided that now that they had some loyal customers, they would change their menu, and reduce the quality and quantity. What a disappointment! Don't waste your money there!

Pros: Nice atmosphere, greek music in the background

Cons: Food quality, portion sizes

.

Long story short:

1) The menu is very limited, even more limited if you're a vegetarian (my wife and I are both vegetarians)
2) Fine dining prices at a casual dining restaurant. $38 for two drinks (non-alcoholic), two salads, and a spread sampler, plus an extra pita (see below).
3) The food was nothing special, it was the type of stuff you'd throw together at home quickly (sans flavor)
4) Service was so-so, not bad but then again not really good either.
5) The atmosphere was ok, it was done on a theme (Greek) which I associate with casual dining, not fine dining as the prices would suggest.

Food:
For $5.95 the salad is mostly tomatoes and a huge block of feta with a lot of olive oil and vinegar, I've made stuff like this at home when I didn't want to bother with anything else.

For $12.95 the spread sampler had three spreads: 1) cucumber yogurt something (bland), 2) scoop of feta + peppers (this was where all the spice went), 3) eggplant (bland) with six small slices of pita bread.

For $1.50 you can get extra pita slices, mine came out a bit burned (I guess the chef was too busy removing flavor from other dishes that he couldn't keep an eye on my pita slices). I couldn't believe that they sent out the sampler with 10X more spread than pita. I guess that's pita marketing for you.

The best part of the meal was the free mints I grabbed on the way out the door.

The Sunday night we were there there were only a few other people in there too suggesting that business is on the decline. Not really a surprise given the quaility of the experience. Do yourself a favor, if you want Greek food go someplace else.

Pros: Good mints at the door, you'll need them to get the taste of "rip-off" out of your mouth.

Cons: Spending good money on the worst food I've ever forced myself to eat.

.

WOW, i was sooo impressed with this food! i tried several apps and entrees and everything was great. the menu provides a very large variety of food so anyone can find something to fulfill their taste buds. the only drawback was the plastic type covering on the tables....for such a great restaurant, all they need something a bit more classy like a white table cloth. regardless, i plan on dining here as much as possible. everyone should try this place

I've never had a bad meal here. Dishes are tasty, service is friendly, and you never leave hungry. The atmosphere is very casual, it can get loud, but it's not an annoying kind of loud. The items on the menu and the daily specials - both are good.

I was very impressed with everything. We were seated promptly, given cold water, bread and olive oil for dipping. Jorge, our server, recites the specials and I asked for his favorite off of the menu. When in Greece, eat as the Greeks do, I always say. I love all kinds of food. I order the braised stuffed spinach porkchop atop rice and a red wine reduction, plated with garlic green beans. My other dining companions had the Salmon special. Wow! Big portions. If you have a hearty appetite, this is the place to be. A little bit pricey, but worth the amount of food served. It was delicious. I could not finish it all so the beans and most of the rice had to be sacrificed. I loved the wine glasses (which were small rock glasses) and the small aluminum chilled tumblers for a refill for our glass of wine (we should have had the Sambuca or Ouzo to keep with the theme of the restaurant). This was nice as it kept the wine cold. Very enjoyable and I will definitely return. The Social Light

Our party of 5 was sat immediately at 630p on a Sunday night, good start. Then we were ignored for 10 minutes. When our server did show up, she said there was confusion about who was supposed to have this table (there were only 4 other tables sat at this time). She was knowlegeable about the menu and specials, and we thought things were looking up. Then we began our wait... and wait... and wait. Finally we get out meals and 4 of 5 are just okay, the 5th is a fish special that is way over cooked. It gets sent back and the rest of us eat while our friend watches. When we are finished, her food arrives. The manager comes by with a half-hearted apology, and an offer to buy our friend dessert. When the server is flagged down (as she is not very attentive), she knows nothing about the free dessert offer and acts offended when told about it. As she clears our table, she spills oil on my husbands shorts. Her indifference is what upset us the most. She was not apologetic in the least (we know accidents happen), and made little effort to rectify her mistake (oh, let me get you some water, after I clear off the rest of your table and stop at another table). While the atmosphere was good, the lack of service and attention to detail ruined the experience for ALL of us.

We live 2 hours from Raleigh. We came across Taverna Agora on citysearch.com, and since my husband absolutely loves Greek food, we decided to make the trek. It was well worth the drive! The restaurant was charming, romantic, and sparkling clean. Our waiter was amazing! He was attentive and thorough (especially when it came to explaining all of the specials and desserts). The food was fabulous! It LOOKED and TASTED great! The owner even stopped by our table several times to make sure we were being well taken care of. My husband and I travel frequently, and we haved dined in a LOT of restaurants in a LOT of different places, but this is our new favorite!

Friends stopped by from out of town on July 4th. We arrived early around 6PM and were seated immediately in a nearly empty restaurant on the patio. The patio was extremely comfortable and had a nice feel, and the crowd picked around 7 PM. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable from the start. The bread was a bit stale but the olive oil/lemon mixture was exceptional. We ordered a carafe of wine which was the right amount for 3 people. I had heard by word of mouth that the calamari was very good and it was. We ordered the souvlaki, a rib-eye special, and the agora sharing platter. All were excellent. Dinner for three was around $75. Whether we hit TA at the right time or whether we made the right choices, it was a great time with great food and drink. Highly recommended!

This amazing Greek restaurant satisfies everyone. The setup of the seating areas provides an atmosphere for whatever the occasion. There is a vined trellis on one side for a romantic atmoshpere, an open area for families, covered outdoor seating, and a bar area. The food has been great every time I have eaten there. There are also affordable wine choices to go with the meal. Several of the appetizers are incredible. The Tirokafteri was the latest and best in my opinion (just ask for more pita). The Garides ke Media Fournou is a clay pot dish that soars with flavor. The salmon special I ate was delicious. It comes with a tomato and red wine sauce with great flavor and lump crab that improves it even more. This is the best Greek restaurant in the Triangle.

It was beautiful! good music, great quality food, and very good service. They had a special Valentine's menu of full four course meals (appetizer, soup or salad, entree, and desert). What's great is that none of the portions were huge. It was definately meant as an eating experience instead of gorging to satisfy hunger. The manager even brought around carnations to all the women. Especially since it had to be a last minute pick, I'm very greatful my boyfriend found Taverna Agora!

We did not have reservations for a saturday nite meal with five people. We were seated promtly. We also placed our order very soon after being seated. With no salads or appitizers we expected to be served our meals in a reasonable time. It took over an hour and a quater to be served our meals. At no time did the waitstaff inform us that because they were busy that things were taking a longer time than usual. When we received our bill we asked to speak to the manager. He finally came over and when we voiced our displeaseure he became defensive. After we again expressed our concerns, he finally did express he was sorry. AS we left, we overheard a couple who also had the same problem . They had waited over two and a half hours to be served.

The customer must be always wrong. A reservations was accepted for 5:30 on the outside patio (no problem, said the lady on the phone). Arriving, we were told that there was no room on the patio and we were assigned a seat "inside". We were not given a choice (the room was entirely empty at that point), but were assigned the table on the aisle next to the "highway to the kitchen". There are at least 10 ways to make a customer "feel a bit ok" at this point in the disappointment. Try a glass of our new wine, take any table you like, etc. None of these options were made available. Blame was placed on the "clerk". I explained that this is how business is lost...there was no concern. Exit stage left! I can only vote with my business, or lack thereof.

Our experience might have been better if the AC was working. It was so hot in there that it was difficult to enjoy our meal. Our poor waiter looked like he was sprayed by a sprinkler, but it wasnt a sprinkler; it was his own sweat!!! Kinda gross if you think about it. Anyway, my lamb chops were pretty good, the orzo couldve used some spices considering that my boyfriends dish was way too spiced (3 or 4 groups of flavors all in 1 dish little too busy). Hes also disappointed with the 4 quarter-sized scallops he got in his dish, which was a nightly special. We werent too crazy about the Greek wines either (tried both the red and the white). I guess its one place that well try again, but just not any time soon or at least well call and make sure the AC is working.

Being Greek , I didn't think the food was authentic. Stay away from the Taramosalata(tastes like salty anchovy paste), the melitzanosalata &the pickled octapus/calamari. The fried calamari &their tzatziki are authentic. The meat entrees are great but not plentiful and so are some of the desserts. E.g. the Kandaifi is dry &a very small portion.
About the wine: stay away from their house wine(only one sold by the glass). Great wine by the bottle: Hatzimichalis/Cabernet etc.
The service was also thumbs down: Lack of knowledge about the food, could not answer any questions regarding wine and didn't even know the types of beer they had.
Also the sound of breaking plates in the kitchen and everyone screaming "OPA"(which is NOT done in any taverna in Greece by the way) was very distracting.
Overall a total disappointment. Nikos at Brightleaf sqare in Durham is still my favorite(and pretty authentic greek restaurant.

I doubt you'll find more amazing taste for the relatively low prices. Some of the specials go for $20 or more, but you can enjoy a FABULOUS entree for $10. And, the portions are so large that you can easily get two meals out of a single entree.

My wife and I had a very positive experience on our first visit to Taverna Agora. The dining area is open and not cramped with seating on the outside terrace a nice option. We also enjoyed the Greek music playing on the sound system. The fried calamari and sauted shrimp appetizers were very good. The braised lamb shank entre was first rate. Service was excellent. We will tell our friends about this place and go back again.
