I started going to the Door In 1974. Back then there was also the Road House and chronosynclasticinfideblium nearby....
Anyway, the Door was my favorite place, and I saw it morf over the years. I managed to go there three or more times a week. Thurs. nite jazz jams was one of my favorite venues.
A lot of nites the place was so packed you could barely move.... and thats the way I liked it. I used to hook up with friends Sue Harris, Sue Love and Willy along with others like Mary Beth Braun, or Frank Brisco, Denise Lamond, Frankie Oats, Steve and Rick Lorenz... It was a neiborhood meeting place where you were always comfortable, the music was great, the game room was a foos ball / pinball meca for great players. ( Does anyone remember my friend "butterfly"?)

In july 1980 I moved to the Outer Banks. I visited The Double Door one last time the night before I left. It was dark and quiet, just a few people were there. I looked around at the empty booths along the wall, All the chairs, tables and barstools. I have probably sat in every spot in the place. Even on the steps that went upstairs! I thought of all the bands I'd seen. All the people I'd met but didn't know their names. All the conversations. The nights that I left there with a girl on my arm that I had just met....
As I paid for my beer for the last time, and headed for the door I could hear someone playing pinball back in the game room. So familiar is that sound. I knew I was going to miss that place.
I'm glad to find out that the Double Door is still there. If I ever make it back to Charlotte, it's a must do for me.

This authentic Blues bar is not to be missed. Operating in the same building with the same ownership and management for 35 years (as of December 22, 2008) has made this place a "not to be missed" attraction if one is interested in a good but simple lunch, hanging out after work with a cold beer or attending one of the fantastic live music shows that are usually scheduled 6 nights a week. On Monday night, the party is the best in town with the Monday Night Allstars doing classic rock, R&B, and a mixture of music that makes one want to dance. Most Thursday nights are Jazz night with an ever changing lineup led by local jazz great Bill Hanna. Many famous blues stars have appeared here over the years including The Nighthawks, R.L.Burnside, Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks and others too numerous to name. The atmosphere is always friendly and the acoustics are great. This place features live music in an intimate setting that feels like one's own living room.A book about the venue's 35 year history is set to be released in December, 2008 and will be available for purchase at the venue and on Amazon.com

Nice place to see some excellent artists close up, my husband and I have seen a few notable blues musicians here. Yes it is small, but it is the blues! I wish there were more places in this town which catered to the blues scene and brought in first class local and national musicians like this place does. Not a yuppie place, let your hair hang and relax! No airs here, thankfully!

Last time I was at the DD they only had an ATM and didn't take cards which in this day in age is annoying. The beer selection was horrible, the best thing on the menu was a big NewCastle which I liked but the menu is still lacking. The music is great though and that is why people come. The help could be a little more attractive but such is life!

Pros: Great music scene and it's a fun time

Cons: horrible beer selection unless you are a lover of cheap domestics.

Been around since I was young and could attend. I have seen some great bands there and will always remember the good ole days. Now it is just a little too crowded for me. I like a smaller place with less people and the in crowd for this club is college. I am past that age so I just don't fit in anymore. If you are over 21 you need to go at least one time in you life. It is in place to see some celebs when they are in town and I would recommend everyone go at least one time.

The Double Door Inn, has been around forever it seems. I remember as a child it was "The Place" to go to see and be seen. The Double Door has been a back stage jam spot for a many of performers passing though. the Charlotte Area. Eric Clapton has showed up and picked a few with the band. Its said Jeff Cook also likes to show up and play when in town.

If you love blues type music and don't mind being a little crowded then check them out....

PROS: Pop in Performers such as Clapton
CONS: Crowded

The Double Door is a very nice place to go and enjoy blues type music. The service is great and the people are always friendly. It is a little on the small side and if there is a good band, there will be standing (or should I say, squeezing) room only. There is a very relaxed atmosphere on the nights that it isn't too crowded.

PROS: Great music, cold beer and friendly service
CONS: To crowded when they have a good band

I have been going to the Double Door since it opened.Yes, it's crowded, service is slow, and the don't offer "snacks". So what? It's all about the music!! The cover charge is not pricey considering the calibre of music that you hear. I hate cigarettes and it is smokey, but I will gladly pay the cover and brave the smoke for some of the great talent that I have seen there. It ain't you average pick up bar with chicks grinding each other on the dance floor and putting their tongues down each other's throats. Go "uptown" for that crap!

Double Door is me and my husband's favorite place to go kickback on a weekend night. The atmosphere is so relaxed, and the staff and crowd is very nice. The 20 oz NewCastles are awesome as well as the lemon drops! You have to give Double Door a shot if you appreciate good blues tunes with no fluff!

This is a real classic business, having lasted for 29 years now. Great music, but gets too crowded sometimes. Drinks are ok but TOO expensive as compared to those at other local bars.Probably the worst is the service by the bartenders. They tend to play favorites, take lots of breaks, and have been known to totally ignore a customer trying to order. This makes the DDI experience frustrating at times.

After reading all the reviews, I decided to see for
myself what the DDI was truely like. I have concluded that the regular DDI blues fans are in-capabile of giving a unbiased review. Sadly, it is all too true that most patrons are forced to stand up ALL night long. Getting to the bar, to get a drink, served in a plastic cup, is a Major endeavor! No food, chips, crackers, or peanuts only! And the tobacco smoke ?...UNBELIEVEABLE! The ONLY
satisfactory thing about the DDI was the music.

This is my home away from home. Having lived in many cities, this is, by far, one of the best blues venues ANYWHERE. When I need a big shot o' blues, this is the place I go. Now for the whiners - stay home. If the bar wasn't packed, if the audience wasn't shoulder to shoulder, this revered place wouldn't exist. The bartenders do their level best to serve as fast as possible. The regulars are the nicest folks you'll meet. In the ten years I've been going to the DDI, I've never once been "offended" by anyone, even if they did just come off their blue-collar job. So elitists, find your own spot and I promise I won't be there.
