Had a nice dinner last night. Our server, Mandy, was fantastic. We had our 5 year old with us, and she worked with us to concoct something he would likely eat. She was also helpful with the menu, attentive, and generally a pleasure.

BE CAREFUL...I have enjoyed this restaurant in the past but was very disappointed with not getting exactly what we ordered, thereafter when I received the bill an order for sushi that we did not order was on there. The waiter Kyle's excuse was the table next door ordered but accidentally put on my ticket (table next door did not even have sushi on their table), He removed the item, I paid the bill and added 12% tip because of the service, Kyle has the nerve to approach me and my guests and tell us that we did not tip him enough...very sad, if his service was right I would have tipped him more. I then approached the front desk to talk with a manager nobody showed up for 5 mins thereafter Kyle came there, I asked to see a manager and he said there was nobody higher then him there...I find that hard to believe that on a Saturday night a waiter is the highest ranking person in charge of shaba shabu... I can see why this restaurant's business is going downhill... I would not eat there again and would recommend you stay away too, especially Kyle.

I absolutely love Shaba Shabu. I ate here for the first time 4 years ago and still think it is the best sushi in the area. I have celebrated 3 birthdays here and plan on visiting many many more times. However, my advice is Sit At The Bar!
If I had only sat at a table at Shaba Shabu, I doubt that I would feel the same way about this restaurant. The service in the dining room leaves a lot to be desired, the wait staff can be short and not very attentive. However, it is completely different at the bar. The service is much faster and the bartenders are much friendlier and attentive.
I used to REALLY love the decor and atmosphere, however it seems that a year ago they painted the walls in the bar area white and I haven't seen a DJ there in a while.
Conclusion: Sit at the bar, order some sushi, go home happy.

# of visits: 2 (it was enough)

The Good: The good is that you have the option of choosing between large variety of items from their Thai and Japanese menu. The selections are vast and much to choose from. The cocktails were well made and the staff friendly. They even had some authentic shabu shabu tables which I was looking forward to test out. Out of the three categories of their food(sushi, Thai, shabu shabu) I'd say the Thai food stood out of the rest. Definitely not the best Thai in the area but then again, I'm not an expert on Thai food.

The Bad: With all the people's good review of the sushi at this place I did have some expectations but they were not met. I sat at the sushi bar in one of my visits and it did not have a very clean odor. I could smell some fishiness in the air. That is a bad sign. Then I noticed that they pre-cut their fish. I haven't seen restaurants do this in a long time. On occasion I see a really busy restaurant do this but they were slow at the time. With a little hesitation I ordered salmon, tuna, and red snapper nigiri to start off with a bottle of hot sake. I took one bite of the pre-cut salmon and was reluctant to finish it. It had a slimy texture and a off smell(probably due to pre-slicing) that bothered me. The tuna was just your average frozen yellow fin tuna. The red snapper was also the frozen tilapia that most sushi bars in the area uses. Overall the flavors of the rice and the fish did not impress me at all. The sushi rolls that we ordered were better then the nigiri sushi but was just average in my opinion. Nothing too special for me to want to return. As far as the shabu shabu, I'll keep it real simple. I do NOT recommend it at all. Shabu shabu was one of my comfort food when I was back in Japan and I'm an expert in the field. I did not try to compare it to the ones back home but it was just awful. I'm sorry to be so mean about it but I could not believe they messed up so bad on such a simple dish.

Summary: It's a nice place to grab a few drinks and have a few Thai dishes and some rolls at a decent price point. The atmosphere was slick and contemporary but lacking some details in some areas if you look closely. I don't think they have had proper training when it comes to Japanese food so stay away from all the Japanese food menu much as possible. The rolls are OK and I will try some of the ones people recommended below if I go back. That is a big IF though with the sushi bar experience.

This place is truly awful. If you like it, get it well you can, because it will not be open long.

I went to the Durham location last night for a drink and a light meal. I was one of only six or so diners in the place and the only one at the bar. I ordered a vodka martini with a twist. The bar tender disappeared for a while (to ask how to make a martini). When she returned she banged around out of site for a while and when she finally emerged, she handed me a glass with (I'm not kidding) the rind of half a lemon in it!

The bartender was totally unfriendly, and when she brought me soup, she slammed it on the table so that it sloshed all around. She did not say a word to me, even after I thanked her.

Then she disappeared and was replaced by a very chatty woman who was the bar manager and a wannabe comedian. She proceeded to tell me about how the bartender is dating a cook and they are fighting and that she had to have her step outside. Too much information and she would not shut up.

All I had was miso soup and a salmon roll, which were both unremarkable. It was so depressing in there I had to leave.

I was also turned off by the commercialization of the Buddha by these people.

I guarantee that many of these excellent reviews are by family, friends, and staff! What a joke. Whoever owns/manages this place needs to get a clue!

I have been to Shaba-Shabu twice since moving to NC in 2006. I had excellent previous experiences, and convinced my boyfriend to take us here for our date night. We called in a reservation, and a table was ready for us upon our arrival. We had a friendly waiter who took our drink order and made us feel at home.

We ordered our appitizer (sushi roll) and entree's and up to this point, I was very impressed with this restaurant. Then my opinion went down hill. I was not pleased with the Taste of the Sushi roll, the presentation was great, but the taste - NOT so great. Then our entree's arrived. The ratio of noodles:shrimp (meat) was Ridiculous! There was enough Pad Thai noodles to feed four people, and 5 shrimp. Tiny shrimp that were not very flavorful at that! My boyfriend was making a funny little comment, when the waiter overheard him and grabbed the Manager. He came over and told me that there were supposed to be 5 shrimp, but that he would buy us dessert to "make up" for it. I told him that was unneccessary.. but he kept mouthing (er.. talking) until I finally said ok.
Now - I understand that the economy is not as it once was .. but FIVE shrimp was UNacceptable! I work Part time in a VERY nice restaurant in downtown Raleigh, and can understand "cutting back a little bit" but this was ridiculous! The waiter was VERY nice, and tried very hard to make up for the manager's attitude. The ambiance and warmth of the restaurant made up for the taste of the appitizer, but I will not be going back to Shaba-Shabu again! It was not worth the money or aggrevation...

Judging by the tone of the review below, I think the attitude problem lay with the diners. We order takeout from ShabaShabu almost weekly, and dine in about once a month. The staff are always courteous and the sushi is fresh, well-presented and (most importantly) delicious!

Last time we were there we ordered a bottle of wine that turned out to be unavailable that day. Our waiter, who was very personable and enthusiastic, recommended a similar offering... it was more expensive, but they charged us the price of the bottle we originally wanted, saving us around $10. Overall, the prices are very reasonable; I'm not sure why, but sushi in Raleigh tends to be WAY overpriced in general. I've been to pretty much every sushi place in town, and the quality you usually get at a comparable price is terrible (I'm looking at you, Sushi Blues).

I don't really like Thai, so I can't speak for that half of the menu, but the Japanese offerings are stellar. The seaweed salad is the best I've had anywhere. Try the Hurricane roll, Yummy roll, or good old-fashioned Futomaki. For dessert, try the green tea ice cream. You won't be disappointed : )

My partner and I were given a $150 gift Certificate to this "restaurant", we went to dinner there and met some very nice people at the bar that were also having dinner. We ended up going over the limit of the gift and spent a good bit extra. We paid the extra and left a normal tip for the service we received. On the way out the waiter that we found out later was the owner's nephew had the nerve to ask why we didnt leave more of a tip. We did speak to the manager Peter, if he is even that, about what happen. He pleaded with me not to tell our friend what had happend and ask us to come back as his guests. Which we did two days later. When we got to the restaurant, we did eat and have drinks.
In the process of our dinner we observed other parties having some difficulties with both the service staff and Peter the manager. I actually heard this man raise his voice and demeanor to a woman who was half his size. My partner and I ask to speak with him to say thank you for dinner and wanted to leave. We waited over 30 minutes to speak with him and he never came back to our table. We saw him at the front and was about to go and thank him for the meal, when a very sarcastic waitress ( I wouldnt even call her a young lady) said something that was completely uncalled to the effect of "they couldnt have done it without us. When we spoke to Peter, he stood there like I was speaking with my feet. Then we were verbally attacked by two other members of the staff. After all of this the so called "manager" stood there like the useless piece of furniture that he was and said nothing.
While we were in the parking lot speaking to one of the other FOUR parties about their horrible experiences, another member of the staff came out and again verbally attacked my partner and I.
The food is overall not bad, the restaurant is really pretty on the inside, but the staff and the management are more than just lacking. I will NEVER go back and will do every thing I can to make sure that my friends, business partners, and family do the same thing. I have never been so insulted by a company in my entire life. Please save yourself , friends and family the hassle of having to deal with being insulted and offened, just order your local Chinese food from home.

attitude from the minute we walked in the door, looked at like we were nothing b/c we didn't have a reservation. seated about ten mins later. took fifteen minutes to take drink order, and another fifteen to get our food order. food took about an hour, and then it took about another half hour after eating to get the check. we had our toddler with us, and no high chair was offered. food was too spicy, and not even warm, temperature-wise, when it arrived. would not go back. oh, and the name of this place is a misnomer, don't expect shabu shabu, it's only available to eight people at a time. and it would probably take a hundred years also.

Love this place. We live in Durham and have been going to Shabashabu Raleigh for several years just to find out they also have a location in Durham! It was a total different atmosphere in Durham, nc. I would recommend both places to any couple who's looking to celebrate a romantic evening. Music could get loud late at night.

We frequent Shaba-shabu quite a bit and most of the time we have pretty good service. The food and atmosphere is what really keeps us coming back, until now. We have had a few good servers...but this last incident just made me cringe. After we finished our dinner the server offered us to go boxes in which we declined so he takes our almost eaten dinners and clears the table. As he takes our plates I watch him grab the rest of the sushi off the plate and eat it!! I mean he could have at least waited to get to the back room but doing it on the dining floor and if that wasn't bad enough he promptly returns to the table with our check still chewing!! As if I wouldn't notice. I love this place so I think next time I will skip the waitstaff and just call my order in to go. I mean seriously...do I even have to mention how inappropriate that was?!

My girlfriends recently took me to this place for my B-day and OMG! the New York Roll was amazing. The sweet black sauce (eel sauce?) was really delicious. I also love the Tiger's tear appetizer. For desert, we had the mango cake which actually had fresh mango in them!
Would definitely go back again

Last night we tried to go to our favorite sushi bar, Kuki, but it was closed for reconstruction. So, I suggested this place, much to my eventual dismay. We decided to sit at the sushi bar, which smelled like a fish house. The sushi looked like it had been there forever, hence the strong fish smell permeating from behind the glass. The avocados were brown and everything just looked dried out. The sushi roll was made by a Mexican that kept looking at his cheat sheet to see what the ingredients were. While we were sitting there our waiter was busy telling another waiter how "sh***y" something was. Nice!! Now I understand why the place was deserted when we got there and this is one more customer that won't be returning in this lifetime.

After a dismal first experience here about 6 months ago, I decided to give this place another shot. Well that will be the last time I let them steal any money from me. The food quality is terrible. The taste is worse than the food court. The exorbitant prices are surely a joke of some kind. I've had better service at Dennys.

I ordered the Chicken Cashew which came after 25min and appeared to be an appetizer size. The presentation seemed decent, although green and red peppers are not really used in Thai dishes. (I should interject here that my wife is Thai and lived in Thailand until she was 28, I also have been there plenty of times) There were literally 5 cashews in it and 6 pieces of chicken. I must have ordered from the kids menu by mistake. Other than being the most un-authentic Thai food I've ever tasted, the food didnt seem fresh or appetizing at all. My wifes dish was poorly prepared and once again tasted nothing like the food in Thailand. And after the whole experience, I left hungry and $40 poorer.

We complained about the food being spiced with what could only be guessed as all-spice instead of proper Thai herbs and were told that thats the way they make it. My wife couldnt stomach the food and asked for a to-go container, to which the waitress replied, I thought you didnt like it, to which my wife responded, we're going to give it to the dog to see if he'll eat it.

First of all, Food is DELICIOUS here. Strong taste, variety in choices, new things to try everytime.
Being a regular customer, I just have to write a review here since ShabaShabu is just newly renovated. It?s now more luxurious, stylist, upscale. I feel like I?m dining in DC or New York city for real.
I don?t think I feel comfortable going in there with my casual clothes anymore since the atmosphere is too upscale. So Dress up if you want to dine there.
It?s a great place to go out on a date or to dine before I got out with my girlfriends.
Food is authentic. They have all sorts of sushi roll there. Thai food is especially amazing there. Maybe because the owners are Thai. The serving portion is HUGE, never finish all of it, but I get my money worth. I?d recommend is Tiger?s Tear or Tom Kha Kai for appetizer.
Now to the best part: You must try a piece of COCONUT CAKE for dessert! It?s homemade by the owner. Its icing is whipped coconut cream with coconut flakes. The cake is made from coconut juice. It?s the kind of cake you?ll never have somewhere else.
One thing I do not like about the place is loud techno music after 11 pm on weekends. arghh
all in all, I will keep going to this restaurant for Asian food.

Cons: techno after 11 pm on fridays and saturdays :(

My husband and I have been going to Shaba-Shabu for 6 years. We celebrate all our major events there! We always go for the Japanese side, though every time we say that we'll try the Thai. Basically, we have never been disappointed. We have always had great service and amazing food. I have to say though that we tend to go early so that we avoid the crowds.

I came down for NCSUs homecoming and had a fabulous time and decided to go out for sushi with my friends. We decided on ShabaShabu. The decor of the restaurant was beautiful, the food was spectacular. However my desert wasn't. My cheesecake was frozen on the inside. The manager Peter took it back and made another one for me. The second slice was frozen. I asked the waiter to have Peter come back to the table. When he returned I told him that the second slice was frozen and I didn't want it he became very rude. He spoke to me in a very condescending manner as if it were because I am a female. I tried to remain calm but he pushed me over the edge. If the desert was good I wouldn't have complained. Plain and simple.

Peter (the nasty manager) walked away from the table and didn?t return. The waiter returned with a new bill, however the manager added 20% gratuity not only to my check but my four other friends checks. Unbelievable!!!! I didn't ask for everyone?s check to be adjusted. Just mine!!! And, gratuity is only to be added when there are parties of 6 or more. We had 5. It didn?t matter to me at the time. The waiter was nice and he deserved a decent tip.

Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Terrible Manager. Will I return to this restaurant? ONLY IF PETER DOESNT WORK THERE.

I visited this place a couple of weeks ago and just because of the fact that they won the best sushi joint by metro magazine I decided to give it another try. I don't understand how the voting system works but there must have been a mistake.. First of all, this place has terrible kitchen food...and the sushi...mediocre at best...and that's me being generous. Am I missing something here? I understand Waraji and Mura among the top...but how did this place get the first place....that's the last time I trust magazines to choose my next meal.

Unlike other poor reviews, my waiter did a good job and I have no complaints about the service. I do agree with prior reviews that stated this was not a good restaurant to bring children to. There was no kids menu and one partially broken high chair. The restaurant's decor is attractive and the bar looks very "happening". My complaint is the food. Our food was overpriced and can be described as mediocre at best. The appetizer we ordered tasted strongly of burned sesame oil. The entrees were bland when they were advertised as spicy, lukewarm, and completely unsatisfying. I had really looked forward to some good Thai food, but I did not find it here.

I just recently moved to Raleigh in the beginning of January. Shaba Shabu is the first sushi restaurant I've tried in the area. I like the atmosphere & large sushi selection, and was excited to see Bluefin Tuna on special one night. I ordered the Spicy Bluefin and Salmon Crunch Roll. The Salmon Crunch Roll is awesome, however, the Bluefin was NOT bluefin! It was regular tuna. I think anyone who has had it once would be sure to recognize the difference. The tuna was bright red (like normal) and had the same texture as the regular tuna. Bluefin is more purple/blue (hence the name), and this roll was most definitely NOT made with real bluefin. I thought that maybe this was a fluke, so the next time I went I ordered the same thing, and was extremely disappointed AGAIN to find that what I had was NOT bluefin. I saw no point in arguing this with the waiter, I know they wouldn've insisted that it was authentic bluefin anyway. This was EXTREMELY disappointing to me. Bluefin is one of my most favorite items at a sushi restaurant, not only was I disapponted TWICE, but I believe that offering something that isn't available is FALSE advertising. I hope that someone over at Shaba Shabu gets wind of this and rectifies this problem.

Pros: Awesome Music, especially late, Instrumental mixes of LL CoolJ & Biggie--awesome!

Cons: Bluefin was not real!

I visited this restaurant with friends for the first time last Friday night. I wasn't terribly impressed. Here are my observations:

The restaurant is in a strip mall -- not the classiest of locations.

The service was okay. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful with the sushi menu; however, it took forever for the food to arrive and one of my friends had to repeatedly request a refill on his drink.

The food overall was good. We ordered the sushi and sashimi combination for two, with two additional tempura rolls. The presentation was superb, the food tasted fresh, and there was more than enough food for the three of us. The only negative was that I did notice that one piece of sushi had a hair on it.

The atmosphere was awful. Halfway through the meal, the stereos starting blaring about three different kinds of cheesy music.

With regard to price, our meal came to about $150 for three people (before tip). This check was pretty reasonable, given that my friends ordered quite a few mixed drinks in addition to our meal.

Overall, I would rate this restaurant average, due to the fact that the food was good and the prices reasonable. I wouldn't rush to go back, though. Raleigh is known for having a large variety of really great restaurants and this one, unfortunately, just didn't quite make the grade for me.

Pros: Food and service acceptable

Cons: Location, poor ambiance, definitely not upscale in any way

One of the worst sushi joints in town. I really really do not recommend this place at all. Not much else to say really... Oh...the service was horrible as well.....yeah...this one was a simple review.

Cons: Sushi is not fresh nor made properly...service....bad too.

I've been to Shaba Shabu many times and have always been impressed with the sushi. I've yet to have the thai food, so I can't comment on that. The service has been good and bad, but for the most part good. Last night, we went there for girl's night out. We had a party of 14. Our waiter was awesome! He did our checks by name so that if we wanted to get up and move around from seat to seat we could without him having any issues with the checks. He memorized my name and my drink order, so I was pretty happy about that! The sushi was only slightly above average last night. I remember having better there, but the service certainly made up for it! The chocolate martini's were superb as usual! I would definitely recommend checking out this place. It may be in a strip mall, but the interior is gorgeous!

Althought I have only eaten there for lunch I have to say it was wonderful. I know people from other reviews say they had horrible waits during the evening service. I never have had that problem. I have loved everything I have had there to eat. It was empty so service was fine for me. I am a thai lover and this place was fresh and light for my need and taste. A friend loves the sushi lunch special. She raved about the price and flavor of the food.
I would try it for lunch and see if it is any better.

My husband and I went to this restaurant a few months ago w/ another couple on a week night. The place was a ghost town and 3 or 4 servers were standing around. When we arrived, our friends were already there. The already ordered drinks at the bar and it took 20 minutes to get them. The hostess seated us and as we were walking in, another couple stopped us and told us the service was bad and we shouldn't bother. We waited for 15 minutes while servers stood there looking at us, despite us requesting someone come to our table. We were so irritated that we got up to leave and the hostess said she was sorry and that a lot of people leave because of poor service. I'd recommend going to Sushi Blues, Red Bowl or Asuka rather than this place...it was a very poor establishment.

We had Thai. Waitress was very pleasant and accommodating. $45 for 2 main dishes and 2 appetizers. Every dish had too much salt. Appetizers: Chicken skewers with peanut sauce. The chicken had a funny texture and was not flavorful. Spring rolls needed all the dipping sauce available. Main dishes: salmon with curry sauce, asked for red instead of green. I've had better red thai curry sauce out of a can. We also ordered a forgettable pork dish with mediocre sauce (sorry, don't remember which one). The decorations are impressive. Spacious, high ceilings. Real(?) wooden plows hung on the walls, beautiful designer-type wicker-backed chairs. Might be nice to come here for drinks, but not for the food.

I read all about this restaurant before we went. We had a party for my brother's birthday there (party of 18) and they provided us a private room...nice job. I'll just get the bad stuff out of the way. This next part is just me...they made us take off our shoes to eat in this private room. I have a thing about taking walking around getting my feet dirty and then putting dirty feet into my shoes. It's just one of my things. We all had to sit around this table shoe-less but our waiter was coming in and out with his shoes on. It just grossed me out. Like others have said in their reviews, the tables are strangely sticky. When I sat down, there was a hair stuck to the table. Food is quite pricey. The bathrooms are very very loud (pumping in incredibly loud music) and is very poorly lit. I kinda think you need to be able to see in a public restroom. Lastly for the bad things, it was ABSOLUTELY NOT kid friendly. My babysitter fell through at the last minute so my 2.5 yr old had to come along. There is no kids menu. I had to get him some appetizer that looked like something he would eat. It was very expensive considering it was a puny amount of food...charged me full price for a small drink for him. I guess I'm just used to places that are fully prepared for children with decent priced kids menus that usually include a drink and possibly something sweet at the end. All that aside...the food is really good. We had a large variety of sushi and it was great. LIke I said earlier, the private room was nice. They added 20% gratuity to the bill...ok service...could have been alot faster. Overall, I'd go again...minus the tax deduction...lol. The food was good enough to overlook the bad things.

I've eaten here many times, and honestly I like this place. The Thai food is excellent. The sushi is tasty, but most of it is overpriced, fried, and drenched in sauce. I'd stick to the Thai food. Try the Pineapple Shrmp Fried rice, served in a half pineapple. Ask for it spicy and you won't be disappointed.

Now on to the not so good part. The service here is pretty bad. The past five times I've been here I had to track down a waiter/waitress after about ten minutes to get someone to even greet us.. and they weren't even busy! I have also had an instance of intentional over billing my credit card by a waitress. In any other circumstances I would have given her the benefit of the doubt, but we were very clear and very specific about our billing. There was no way it was a mistake. I called and spoke with the manager after noticing the overbilling, and they were extremely apologetic. I'm also pretty sure that waitress no longer works here.

All in all, this place needs to either hire some more/new wait staff, or train the ones they've got. It's bringing the place down.

I have eaten at ShabaShabu 3 times over the past year, and I vow I will never eat there again due to the consistently terrible service. Yes, the food is good, but it is not above par when compared to other Thai or Japanese restaurants around the triangle, and given the rude, inattentive nature of the wait staff I would rather spend my money elsewhere. For example, the second time I was there I was with 4 other people and it took over 45 minutes for our beverages to arrive and an hour and a half for our food make it to the table. Then, when we asked for the check to be paid partially in cash and partially by credit card the waitress did not pay attention and pocketed the $77 in cash which was supposed to go toward the bill as a tip. It then took several minutes of arguing to convince her of the amount of cash that had been present and that it should have been applied toward the check. She also charged us for an entree that we did not order, and so once again the bills had to be corrected. The final straw came this last trip, when there were perhaps 8 other couples in the whole restaurant and my boyfriend and I had to flag down the waiter twice to get our bill and then again for him to pick it up. This after an entire evening of putting up with his disinterested, snide attitude. In the past I was willing to give this restaurant another chance, thinking that perhaps our waiter/waitress was having an "off" night, but now I know that this is the status quo for the staff at this establishment. There are a multitude of other Asian cuisine places to eat in this area with equally good or better food and markedly better service; I would recommend that you not waste your time and money at ShabaShabu.

I went to shabashabu for lunch between Christmas and New Years, and was very disappointed. I requested shaba shabu for lunch, and was seated at the station. I found the overall appearance not very clean and the sauce dishes were dirty, and in general the atmosphere was bad right from the start.

I was then handed a menu, but found that the shabu shabu was not offered at a discount for lunch any longer due to the time required to prepare.

I complained both about these lack of cleanliness and lack of a discount at lunch given I was eating the restaurant namesake food. For each I was given an excuse.

Needless to say, I decided I would be better served to not eat at all, and I informed my server that I would not be eating there today, and probably never.

I no longer recommend this restuarant that was very good for the first year or two after it opened.

The food at Shabashabu is not bad. However, the service is terrible!! Everytime we go there, it seems to take the wait staff forever to bring our water. It took forever for him to come back to take our order. Last time, we were there, we just finished our dinner and were sitting there chatting. The waiter came over and kept hinting to box our leftover and trying to rush us out of the restaurant. And it was only 8:45 pm and the restaurant is not supposed to close until much later. Horrible service and I will never go back there again!

I can't recommend the sushi at ShabaShabu. I've been disappointed every time I've been there. Go with the Thai food and skip the sushi unless "okay" sushi satisfies you. There a other sushi joints in town that serve much better sushi.

Shaba Shabu was once one of our favorite restaurants in the Triangle. It had a few issues (sticky tables, gas station-like bathrooms), but we were willing to overlook it because the quality of the food. That was until we decided to get a group together for a birthday and go. Reservations were made 4 days in advance and while we (18 people) were seated on time, it took 40 minutes and 2 requestes to get the first drinks. And I don't mean mixed drinks, I mean Diet Pepsis. Appetizers were ordered at the same time as the drinks but were then served well after the 40 minutes (cold!). We only had one waiter (for 18 people and he had other tables!?) and only after repeatedly asking for better service were additional people put on the tables. Almost 2 hours later Entrees were served which were fine and then a piece of cake was brought out for the guest of honor. Now, usually a good restaurant would comp the slice of cake for a party spending nearly $700 in their establishment. This was not the case. Also, even after the complaints about the service and the 3+ hours spent at dinner while waiting for various courses to arrive, the "mandatory" tip on large groups (18%) was still on the bill! And to add insult to injury, after the waiter once again failed to do his job and collect the payment for one of the checks, the birthday boy was approached in the parking lot (twice by the waiter and then by the owner and/or chef and a taller guy who we're assumign was supposed to be "the muscle") and somewhat harrassed for contact information or payment. It was the most bizarre experience and by far worst service I have ever encountered in a restaurant. This was the first time at this restaurant for many in our party and I know it will be the LAST for all of us. Save yourself the trouble - go to Mura at North Hills instead or even Little Tokyo in Cary...food is as good or better and service is always exceptional.

Shaba Shabu was once one of our favorite restaurants in the Triangle. I just had a birthday party for my husband at Shabashabu about a week ago. It was such a great experience. They let's me pre-ordered the food and arranged such a surprise for my husband. The food was delicious, we love it! I would also recommend shaba martini to anyone who looking for great martini. The only downside was that we have to have at least 10 people to reserve the private room which I guess understandable as their Thai private room was huge it could easily accommodate 30-40 people.

Pros: AMBIANCE, FOOD

Waited 15 Minutes to be greeted at our table for lunch and place a drink order. Our table was dirty, cramped and sticky. Food took over 30 minutes to come to the table and the order was incorrect. I had Sushi, she had Chicken Terriyaki. My Sushi was way too cold, had a poor presentation and was tasteless. My Yellowtail was crunchy, how can Yellowtail be crunchy? The salad and ginger dressing was simply Iceberg Lettuce and one teaspoon of dressing. Her dish was boring and came with over cooked vegtables and cold rice. Over all, we learned that we will not stray from our usual spot.

ShabaShabu has a great vibe, nice decor, a trendy hot spot. Service was just ok, I don't think our waiter smiled once. Food was great, I tried the Thai and the Sushi and all was good with the exception of the rice being sticky and overcooked and the white wine being way overchilled giving it a resemblance to (badly)flavored water. The head chef did a round of the tables which was nice. I would go here again mostly for the ambience, but will order a cocktail next time and skip the wine.

While the food is still stellar, I am afraid to see what the kitchen looks like if it is anywhere near to the cleanliness of the restaurant. It truly needs a make-over or at least some serious touching-up!
This has always been a favorite spot of mine since moving to Raleigh, however they really need to do something with the cleanliness. My husband refuses to go there now.

The service was mediocre--after being seated we waited about 10-15 minutes for the waiter to take our food order. Then we discovered we were on the wrong side of the restaurant (we made reservations for Thai! Why did they seat us on the Japanese side?--watch that if you're a first timer). In comparison to other restaurants in general, it took a loooong time for the food to come. The best thing about this place is the ambience. It's hip, modern, and they play house music. Visit Shabashabu if you want to pay for atmosphere.

Cons: Mediocre Food, So-So Service

The most AWESOME Tom Kha Gai soup I've ever had. Shaba Shabu is now a regular stop whenever I'm in town.

The name of the restaurant comes from Thai flower (Shaba) and Japanese food (Shabu). However, I frankly give the new name to them as BabaBubu. Why? The taste for both Thai food and Japanese food are the worst ever. Japanese plates was too cold and not Japanese rice and extremely sweet as well as not authentic. Thai food was like made by chef who is not Thai. I can make better by just reading from Thai recipe book eventhough I don't know how to cook. I eat out everyday and every meals. That's why I dare to give new jargon as BabaBubu .

Raleigh has needed a place like this.
Simply put: The food is as good as the interior decor, exquisite. Hot, trendy and beautiful this restaurant is my group's new favorite place for Saturday night out.
If you haven't gone, go. Eat. Drink.
Shabashabu rocks. That's it.

In Short
The decor is simple, clean and modern. Chairs, tables, silverware and plates are sculptural. The Thai dishes belie the flashy decor, as they are thoroughly authentic. Prepare for a spicy kick. Tom kha kai soup is…
