JCB is an absolutely terrible company. While I believe John Campbell, the man, is a decent enough person, his company and employees are unfortunately the worst. We contracted him to build a custom home for us and it was an exercise in pain that lasted well beyond the final walk-through. During construction we quickly learned that our supervision was required as JCB's "supervisor/ foreman" was non-existant, and that they would employ every trick in the book to skirt code and building industry standards. There was no quality control. While some of the problems were caused by pure ineptness and inexperience of some of the subcontractors, others were a result of blatant "cutting of corners". Below are some of the more significant issues:
- We had several structural issues. They failed to install one of the piers supporting the home and countless floor joist were unsupported by the piers that were in installed. Our floors began to "sink" within the first year in our foyer and kitchen areas.
- The "finish" work; it would be laughable if it weren't our money they were playing with....at our own expense we had to rehang almost every door and replace 90% of the trim as it was not salvageable. Several windows had gaps so large you could see daylight through them even after their attempts to fix them.
- The painter was terrible both in materials used (although we paid for premium products) and quality. When we went after the painters as JC would not, the painter dissolved his "company" and reestablished under another name.
- Our brick fireplace was another disaster. The masons did not recall exactly how to build one stating, "I have not built one of these in about 15 to 20 years". Turns out it was not build to code and after much arguing (and smoke filled rooms) JC had the height increased by several feet IOT allow it to draw. But the real kicker was when one evening the fireplace chimney pulled away from the house and started to fall away from the structure. An outside contractor (Ram jack this time) had to be called in to repair the poor work. JC did pay for this through his insurance. There was an amount allotted for repairs to the inside of the firebox which did not come close to covering the repairs needed. The firebox was built so "skewed" that it ultimately could not even be repaired. It had to be torn out and rebuilt. (We had to pay for all of the extra work required.)
- Tile work; again very poor. The shower leaked into the master bedroom closet, and some of the decorative wall tile was installed upside down. Tile had to be cut out and reinstalled. The "fixed" shower limped along for several years with slow leaks. We ultimately had to hire an outside contractor (at our expense) to tear out the shower and repair it. We saw the old liner for the shower pan--it had too many holes in it to count.
- Plumbing; they installed the main sewer line with a negative grade... bottom line the sewage ran back toward the home instead of to the city sewer lines. We found this out when sewage backed up into our downstairs shower. They initially did not want to fix it, they wanted to leave it as it was and install a pump. It was a real fight to get it repaired correctly, but ultimately they did fix it. Unfortunately they never did fix the yard, which was torn up in the process of the repair. Again, we had to do this ourselves.

JCB stopped returning calls as promised and only came out to address these issues when we contacted an attorney to start legal action. John Campbell is likable man. He is an Army retiree and church going man however the moral values these institutions promote are not in any way reflected in his company.

Bottom Line: Do not use this company! It is a wonder that they are still in business.

Purchased lot to have custom home built on. Builder missed completion deadline by one month. Never showed up for walk through or had the decency to show up at closing. Did walk through with realator... missing chair rail molding, no molding or completion in master bath around whirlpool tub. Poor paint work. Poor cleanup.. Forman son-in-law, made excuses, said John was broke... never finished repairs before warranty ran out... DO NOT CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY... he may have been good years ago... but now is very bad to work with

Pros: long time custom builder

Cons: home wasn't done by deadline... tried to skimp on materials

The supervision of their sub contractors is below what is expected for the price range of home built by JCB. Their follow up is slow and incomplete. They offer no extended warranty, probably because the quality of work is generally sub-par.

Find another builder.

John Campbell builders are the best around. The service and detail they offer their clients is first class. The homes they build are top of the line. They build with only the finest materials and they don't cut corners.
