Just to get a more up-to-date review of UNCC on the board, I just want to say that is a great school with lots of things to do, especially with the new student union. I'm an Elementary Ed. major c/o '13 and so far I love UNCC. Aside from the unlimited number of activities to do on campus, the diversity of UNCC will blow your mind! With students from England to Zimbabwe there's never a dull moment in a classroom. And the teachers are wonderful. I'm sure that there are a few that I haven't had the pleasure of running into that are a little rough around the edges but the faculty and staff that I have met are wonderful! So, if you're looking for a school with great academics and student life with tuition that's FAR less than UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, State or any of those other money hogs, UNC Charlotte is the place for you :]

Overall, my worst experience at UNCC would be dealing with the financial aid office. They are extremely slow, and extremely rude. I applied for a loan in mid-August, and the financial aid office still hasn't approved it because they are "running behind" on outside loans (it is now October 3rd). Which is a completely ridiculous excuse... and it infuriates me that they can hold my money for that long and I have yet to see a cent of it, even though I'm getting bills for the interest on it. I am positive they are just holding it to collect their own interest on my money. I am not the only person who has experienced this issue either.
Also, as for the overall academic experience... it really just seems like UNCC is trying to expand too quickly. They are just packing in more and more students, and in some of the large lecture classes... like Chemistry, Biology, Liberal Studies etc. Professors even complain that their class sizes have grown too much, which creates and overall bad experience for the students. So, naturally in the large lecture classes, the withdrawal and fail rates are extremely high. I personally chose UNCC because it was supposed to be sort of an upper-level Liberal Arts type college, but they have definitely strayed away from that within the past few years.
Pros: Nice campus, great housing, good English department...
Cons: Horrible financial aid, horrible advising, horrible professor/student interaction, and this is a huge commuter school... everyone will go home on weekends, so you should too, basically.

This is the biggest university in Charlotte. It's not your "Chapel Hill", but a good school with good programs. It's a great place to, for example, go back to get your master's degree. Clay Aiken (American Idol) went here.

UNCC does offer many different programs of study. However, they charge way too much for parking, advising is not done very well, and the financial aid office completely ignores you. Sometimes the police can be a little over the top as well.

I recently graduated from UNCC and was never impressed by it. Student advising was a waste of time - I usually knew more about which classes I should take than my advisor. Because it is a commuter school, there isn't a lot of solidarity among the students. The campus is pretty quiet on the weekends. Probably the worst experiences I had at UNCC were at the financial aid office. Financial aid is difficult enough to navigate, but the people in the financial aid office also happen to be extremely rude.
PROS: Not expensive in comparison
CONS: Financial aid, student advising, student life

Great university! It has grown tremendously both in population and in size. They are building new buildings and dorms. It has been traditionally a commuter school but there are quite a few apartment complexes in the area that students live in. The professors are great and the school really prides itself in academics and in its students. I recommend highly!
PROS: Good professors, great location, good reputation
CONS:

I graduated from UNCC in 1991 with a BA in Biology. I transfered to UNCC in 1984 . It took a long time to get my degree while working full time. But UNCC was willing to help me get the classes I needed. UNCC even allowed me to take a few classes at CPCC because UNCC didn't offer them at night.
UNCC has over 80 course studies leading to a BA/BS degree. Located on 1,000 acres, they have an enrollment of over 15,000 students.
PROS: Willing to work you on your classes
