I've been a Becker Automotive customer for 15 years with 3 cars, the latest one a 19 year old 940. I wouldn't keep those Volvos this long if it wasn't for the help I've gotten from Neil and Frank over those years and can recommend them

LOOKOUT This place was recommended to me by a good customer of theirs from a few years back. Maybe they were good then but I took my car here because it was leaking oil. They charged me $2270 to fix it. The following week it was still

They took my Volvo right in, fixed the convertible roof quickly! Very impressed with their service AND their "personal touch". Would highly recommend Becker's! (Thanks Frank!)

If you own a Volvo, go to Becker. Honest, detailed, no funny business. In fact, if Mr. Becker can help you solve a problem over the phone, he'll walk you through it and allow you to avoid bringing it in. I've been taking my Volvo to them for about 4 years.

Pros: experienced, honest

Cons: not that many

Neil Becker has been servicing my old 240DL wagons for about 15 years. He is basically an expert and has never been anything but honest. He understands I'm not rich so he only does the work that is necessary. I have had 2 times in 15 yrs where I had to take the car back in because of a glitch. They aren't magicians, they're mechanics. If you've had a bad experience I assure you it isn't typical. I realize how hard it is to find a trustworthy mechanic and how put off one can be if a first experience is a bad one but it is also hard to read these extremely negative reviews knowing what I know about dealing with this business. You don't have to give it another chance but people need to know this isn't typical. I've had my car towed from Richmond to his Durham shop for repairs after being seriously ripped off by 2 Volvo dealerships there. Another thing to consider, Volvo doesn't make Volvos anymore. Maybe you bought a crappy car.

Neil Becker has serviced my roommate's Volvo 240 for the past 6 years. He and his staff work on Volvos almost exclusively and they know the little idiosyncrasies and problem areas in Volvos that it takes other mechanics hours and hours (i.e. MONEY) to diagnose. Neil is patient and helpful.

Chances are if you call the shop you'll talk to Frank first. He's a little grumpy and curt on the phone, but don't let that scare you off. In person, he's a nice fellow he just doesn't waste time with small talk.

I recommend Becker to volvo owners, particularly those with the older models that need frequent attention.

Pros: Quick, accurate diagnosis. Usually quick service. Average pricing, but worth it.

Cons: Nowehere to leave or pick up your car after hours

While I loved my Volvo, I hated the high costs of regular maintanence and repairs at the dealership. My neighbor told me about Becker Automotive and boy, was I pleased. The repairmen here specialize in Volvo repair and charged a fraction of the money I'd been spending. Their work was professional and completed when promised. I highly recommend Becker Automotive.

I have been bamboozled by this auto shop TWICE! On both occasions, I was told that my problem was one thing (and spent hundreds of dollars), only to have it break again shortly after and find out that my problem was really something else. On both occasions, the shop refused to refund my money. This last time, I had them "fix" my air conditioning. After two days, it was blowing only hot air again. When my husband went to complain, the mechanic's response was: "If it was working when you drove away from the shop, then we did what we were required to do." They also told me that two of my 18-month old tires were worn down (highly unlikely in retrospect). Unless you are looking for an expensive, short-lived fix or unnecessary repairs, avoid Becker Automotive.

I took my 89 volvo 240 to this service center based on the reviews I read online. I will never go back! My car was running rough and stalling at red lights. I took my car there and the next morning I received a call saying it was fixed. They installed an air mass meter. Upon picking my car up I noticed that is was running the same. The bill was way over 400 dollars for the installation which was all of two bolts as well as the "new part". I took the car back and they said it was a air intake gasket. Upon hearing this I took my car to another mechanic. The mechanic fixed my car for 80 dollars the pressure regulator had went bad. Th car ran perfectly. The thing that disturbed me most is that the mechanic who fixed my car told me that the air mass meter they installed was not new . It was used!! So I really got Hosed!!!

I have used Becker a few times, and normally the service has been very good. Last time though was odd in that I had an appointment, left the car with them, and after a week I still hadn't heard anything from them. I finally had to have the car back and so I dropped by and they had not even started on it. They explained things had been crazy, which happens to everyone. I was just surprised they hadn't called or anything.

These guys have been great for only doing what is really needed. They seem very trustworthy. But my last experience caused some pause, and am not sure what is going on.

Pros: They know what they are doing

As the second reviewer for Becker Auto., I also have a 99 S70 that has received great maintenance work. From oil changes and diagnostic checks to exhaust and seal jobs, the Becker crew has truly been honest and fair in their assessments/work. If you only go to large dealerships, you might want to think about a place like Becker as an alternative.

Pros: Good people that specialize and know Volvo's

I found Becker Volvo to be to be extremeley knowledgeable, fair and professional when I needed service on my 1999 S-70. I highly recommend them. They even transported the car to the Burlington Volvo dealer when Warranty work had to be done.
