Having lived at Brookberry for six months now, I am an extremely dissatisfied tenant. The dishwasher does not work and the maintenance men will even tell you it is a piece of crap. Unless you enjoy hand-drying, don't bother in that area. Also, be prepared for them to switch out whatever they deem fit even if they show you the unit you are renting beforehand. They showed us the exact unit we would be moving into, then switched out the refrigerator with a damaged one once we applied for this apartment. They claimed they would "never do such a thing" and I almost believed I imagined it until a neighbor confirmed they did the same thing to her. The spiders and bugs are unimagineable and if your neighbors smoke, you can smell it in your apartment. The office does not care about this. They also didn't care that the aforementioned dishwasher leaked for the first two weeks we lived here: I don't mean a drop here and there but water literally poured onto the floor everytime we used it. The maintenance men told me that it was my fault--from overfilling it with soap to not securing the door well enough--until I kept insisting it was leaking from underneath. They finally found a broken knut that was causing the dishwasher to leak from the bottom onto the floor: a broken knut NOT caused by filling it with too much soap (I was using premeasured tablets) or not securing the door (guess what, I know how to close a dishwasher door).

The office staff is incompetent at best and rude at worst. Stephanie is abrasive, unfriendly and acts as if you are interrupting a personal vacation if you stop by to ask a question. Amanda is friendlier but refuses to do anything without consulting the manager, Cindy. Cindy is a real treat. She is condescending, unhelpful and will not take responsibility for any problems within the complex: from rude pool guests (who don't even live at the complex) to noise problems. Unless you are prepared to call the police for every issue, this isn't the place for you.

The most recent development that occurred was the disappearance of the locks on our "dining room" windows. They didn't break or stop working; the part that the hook latches onto in order to lock the windows just DISAPPEARED. Considering this has happened since we moved into the apartment and that we live on the ground floor, this is a huge concern.

Anyway, if you want to be overcharged for critter-infested, dirty units (there were stains on the carpet when we moved in and the office did nothing to rectify this when we alerted them), then this is the place for you. My advice' Heed the title and stay away. Far far away!

An update: two days ago (on 10/06/09), there were a couple break-ins in people's cars: their back passenger windows were shattered and their cars were robbed of anything of value. Management did not mention these incidents to any tenants so they could be more cautious. Not only is this place old and falling apart, it's unsafe too.

3 Stars on Apts. \r\nUnfortunately for those who don't have pets its a hassle watching people come across your windows. Yes, they do get that close to 1st floor apartments. Management warns you in the beginning they can't control where people walk the pets. Believe it!!! \r\nThat's why the fee to have a pet is high. (250 each) Maintenance has their job cut out. They dont walk them close to the trees they let their pets feces and urinate anywhere and youre lucky if they pick up the feces. Yes, again people are that lazy and pigs.\r\nWould I rent again for 6 month? Of course, but only on second or third floors.

Pros: Great Big Apts, Out of Traffic Area (Haynes Mall)

Cons: People don't pick up after their DOG!!!

We have lived in the Brookberry apts for nearly a year now and we couldn't be happier. This is one of the few apartment complexes in Winston Salem that has a 3 bedroom apartment available. Our apartment is lovely - the crown moldings make it look much better than just a regular apartment. Plus the space is unbelievable - we have more room than some people have in houses. The staff is great also.

PROS: lots of space
CONS: people upstairs can be very noisy
