Compares well to pubs in Ireland. We had dinner (Irish stew, fish & chips) and found it surprisingly good for a pub. Our waitress was pleasant, prompt and helpful. Now that bars are nonsmoking we'll be eating and drinking there regularly.

Pros: Cozy, good food

It's the only Irish pub anywhere near Duke, and it's perfect if that's your kind of bar. It's dark in there, with dark paneling on the walls--it's an actual bar, and it's right across the street from Brightleaf and the other young hangouts in the area. Check it out on the weekends.

I don't recommend this place for dinner. Our service was very slow! My date mis-calculated the tip (he meant to put more) and the waitress came back and asked for more money!! She was very rude and not a very good waitress to begin with. If you are going to the James Joyce, eat dinner beforehand!

We come the the James Joyce Pub 2x a month, over 2 hours one way, to Hear Paddy Gibney and Bill Ayerby sing and play. We always eat dinner and the food has always been outstanding! Bartenders are wonderfully Irish and friendly...We have made many firends who are regulars at the Joyce.. invite you to join us!!!
