This state historic site (admission $2-$3 donation) shows where the Duke family came from and how their great wealth came from modest beginnings. Site offers an excellent 17 minute film about the Dukes, tobacco and the city of Durham; an informative 1 hour tour of the house (1852) and tobacco fields and processing facilities, and a very interesting museum. Museum highlights: the "animatronic farmer", world's largest spittoon collection; early advertising materials; television that plays the "forbidden" cigarette commercials known to everyone over 40 and no one younger.

Everyone who is a Duke grad or Durhamite needs to visit the Duke Homestead. This is where it all began. Tobacco became a key industry as a result of Washington Duke's beginnings with the development of pipe tobacco, right here on this very farm. An extensive tobacco museum inside the Visitor Center takes you back in time to reliving the stories told by your parents and grandparents. Truly one of the best historical and cultural experiences in Durham.

My Daughters class went to Duke Homestead State Historic Site and I chaperoned the trip. We had a great time learning about times of old. The children were so excited about everything there.

Great place to get the feel of how it used to be. Provides a good introduction into why and how the area developed.
