I would not have even given a star but had to in order to write a review. Absolutely disgusted with this restuarant.
First of all the food was overrated. So it was not what i expected at all. I think kraft boxed pasta is better!

Location and setting are suitable for a large group. Waiters are cute, friendly and their service is really good. However, pasta here did not meet up to my expectation of those in other Italian restaurants.

Great food and nice ambiance for a group dinner.. We went there to congratulate a friend on her wedding and since we were only adding to the noise around, we dint complain :) But might not be very great place for a quite dinner.. however, it serves tasty Italian food and the waiters are very friendly.. I agree with the rest on the parking though.. but the good food they serve is worth the parking pain..

If we want tiramisu, this is one of the places we head to. Of course, the salads and entrees are incredible, too. Lots of fresh food and friendly service. It does get busy quickly and it gets pretty loud sometimes due to the multilevel and bar area. Another place that's worth the wait though. Nearby parking is limited due to construction. (parking deck should be finished soon)

518 is in a beautiful old warehouse with soaring ceilings and brick all around. It has a large dining area on the first floor and a lovely mezzanine. The food is italian and very delicious, starting with the foccacia with olive oil for dipping and ending with fluffy flavorful tiramisu at the end. My friends and I have gone there for years just to get together or for special occasions. I love the pasta dish with the salmon cream sauce; its fattening but DIVINE. The service is adequate but the wait can be long. It helps to call ahead.

My wife and I were celebrating a special occasion and decided to try a restaurant we had not been to before. The location is great and it?s a nice building. The wine was very good but those are about the only pros to this restaurant. I had the chicken marsala and was very disappointed. My wife ordered the beef tenderloin. She ordered it but could not eat it. She ordered it to be cooked medium and when she cut into it the waitress offered to take it back because it was obviously under cooked. I finished my meal before they brought the meal back out. When it came back it was cooked properly but the meat was such poor quality she could not eat it. It was like trying to cut and chew a piece of shoe leather. I don?t know where they get there meat from but I have never had a piece of meat of such poor quality. They did do the right thing and take the meal off of our bill but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I've been here a couple times and every time I've been underwhelmed with their pastas or desserts. And the times I took dates there it indeed lacks a romantic setting. It actually gets pretty loud and it hard sometimes to talk to the person across from you.

If you come to our restaurant (or any other for that matter) obviously overly intoxicated and acting belligerent, please do not expect to be served more alcohol. In fact we take pride in serving our guests with respect and dignity. I should hope that you could try to do the same in future encounters with service staff.

Waitstaff and management are rude. Do not go there on a Saturday night an hour before they close or all you will get it is a bunch of attitude from a staff who would like to go home. We had out of town guests in our party and were embarrassed that this is where we chose to take them. Don't spend your money were you are not wanted. Instead walk down the street to the 42nd street Oyster bar where both the food and the service is excellent.

I don't see what the problem people have with 518...they are not trying to be the next gourmet food restaurant where you don't know or can't remember what you are eating. They are simply the place to go for fresh food that tastes great at an affordable price. Everything is made in house, from the pasta, sauces, salad dressings to desserts. The specials are always good and solid and fresh. No frozen seafood, organic salmon and great pizzas always keep us coming back. The wine list is always very unique and affordable and the servers seem to be very educated in what they are serving. I like the lemon linguine quite a bit and my husband always gets either the tenderloin (best in town) or the ribeye. We have been dining here since we moved here 5 years ago...sure we get the occasional miscook, but the staff is very attentive and very willing to correct their mistakes. They have recently added some very lovely curtains to the upstairs dining area that helps with the noise levels.

Cudos to them and the management for consistently turinng out a great product at an affordable price in a wonderful atmosphere.

We dined out with a group of 5 adults and all had a variety of meals. The worst chicken marsala I have ever had. Chicken was overcooked and asparagus tasted burnt. The crab cakes were unremarkable and the drizzled sauce was completely the wrong flavor to accompany them. The shrimp appetizers were okay but again, nothing here wowed me or would even make me want to go back.

Naturally curious, I wanted to know what the table near the lionhead fountain is like and why is it so romantic. We arrived, and was shown to the table at the lionhead fountain. Our initial reaction was - what, this it the lion head fountain? We expected a larger, grander fountain but it was just like a garden version of a small lion-head, but the goldfish was entertaining, they seemed to be watching us and we had fun watching them too. The table was located in a high-traffic area, in fact, it was kind of blocking the major pathway for the waiting staff, we felt really awkward sitting there. Also, the restaurants used white flourescent lighting, killing any romantic setting. The restaurant, at least where we're seated, gave us the feeling of a diner. The service was bad, our waiter gave us the feeling we were in a diner, most of the time he shuffled past us without asking us anything, all the while he attended to the table next to us with great diligence, maybe we were new and they were old patrons who tipped him handsomely before? We felt very ignored as first-time patrons. The food was just okay, nothing spectacular to rave about, it's like food we can have at any place. We were so unimpressed that we decided not to stay for dessert. The dining experience was so plain. I was so glad we tried it out before treating our friends to dinner there. One more comment, it is my personal opinion that the bread served in a restaurant usually tell if the restaurant is good or not, the bread we were served was so loose-crusted that it literally fell off when we try breaking it in smaller pieces, it will make good bread-crumbs but certainly not good enough to serve patrons, our salad come with a really good bruschetta bread that we felt should be served instead of the plain bread we had initially. Driving on our way home, we felt a little depressed having spent $65 on a meal we didn't really enjoy.

The food is average and definitely not worth the price they ask, but the ambiance is nice, so I guess it could be a decent moderately priced date place if you must have italian. The extra you pay here is not for the food..it's for the atmosphere.

We have been several times, a few of them on New Year's Eve. We were always seated promptly with reservations. The pizza and pasta dishes are excellent. The best part is the value. I say value and not price because you can get a low-quality cheap meal anywhere. Other restaurants with similar romantic and chic ambience and a delicious menu and wine selection would easily charge twice as much for entrees. If you want to experience a memorable evening without breaking the bank, consider 518 West. We have never been disappointed.

Pros: Prompt seating in a practically empty restaurant on a Sat night. Fast service
Cons: Food was bland. I ordered the pear and blue cheese and walnut salad. The blue cheese lacked flavor and the pears were mushy and overcooked. Also, the dressing on the salad was sparse and tasted like it came directly from a bottle. Also tried the Margareta pizza, this was just OK. Too much cheese to cover a poorly made crust. The breadbasket contained the worst attempt at foccacia I have ever eaten. I think the average supermarket chain produces better bread than this place. In addition, the bread was cold and stale and tasted like it had been sitting out all night.

I would not recommend this restaurant unless you happen to be on Glenwood ave late at night and are hungry as happened to us. Otherwise, this is a poor bland attempt at Italian.

I recently dined at 518 West on a Sunday afternoon, so we were seated immediately. It is a cute place, well lit and decorated with various Italian themed art and little fountains. There was a little confusion regarding who our server was, but once we got that straightened out, we got everything we ordered and promptly. We ordered drinks and a calamari appetizer that came out in a flash. The calamari was lightly breaded and not rubbery. However the marinara it came with was just OK, containing large chunks of tomato and garlic and was more the consistency of a salsa than a sauce, so it didn't really stick to the calamari. The marinara didn't have a ton of flavor either. I ordered the lemon linguini and again it was mediocre. You could taste the wine in the sauce, the shrimp were overcooked and a little tough. The roma tomatoes in the sauce were clearly out of a can, not fresh tomatoes as I would have expected. Everything was drowned in cheese and fresh herbs, as if to disguise the fact that there really was very little flavor in the dish. I'd say the best tasting thing was the tuscan white bean soup with pancetta, it was thick and full of flavor. The food is actually quite cheaply priced though, with most entrees at around $14.00. Had they charged more for this food I would have been highly disappointed.

I just do not understand what the big deal is about this place. the food is so incredibly bland that it reminded me of a cafeteria. i had a chicken dish, and I could not distinguish any sort of flavor at all. the spinach dip was great, but so is TGIF's.....I dont think i would ever go back there unless i had to.

My husband and I went on a busy Friday night a few weeks ago. We took advantage of the complimentary valet parking - which was excellent! We unfortunately did not have a reservation, so the hostess told us it would be about an hour wait. I did ask her about reservations, she told me that we can even make reservations online! (We'll do that for next time) We were told we could wait in the bar area downstairs, and that there was also a nice little bar upstairs we could wait at, too. So we went to wait up there, and we shared a lovely appetizer and had a nice glass of wine. Sure enough, about 50 minutes later, we were seated and the service was prompt, knowledgable and very friendly.

Over all- Great Menu, Service, Food, Valet Parking and wonderful atmosphere! Even Kid friendly! I saw a child get seated near the bar while we waited and they had individual crayon boxes for him to color with! (We have kids, so I took special note)

Would definately recommend- but call or go online to make reservations!

I dined at 518 with a group the other night having a celebratory dinner and it was just ok. Our waitress never introduced herself or welcomed us to the restaurant instead she started taking drink orders and somehow skipped myself. When I finally got her attention about missing my drink order it took about twenty-five minutes to get the drink! After about fourty-five minutes of sitting we had our order taken. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time with only one person from our group not getting their entre due to waitress/kitchen error. After dinner she did quietly ask if anyone cared for dessert but acted like she really didnt care. I asked her if they could do anything special for the gentleman that we were having dinner for and her response to me was NO but if I wanted to buy a dessert she could bring it out to him. I told her I was not asking for anything free! I was aking if they could bring something out that maybe had congratulations written on the plate or something. Her response was still NO! That was the last straw of rudeness from this place that I could handle. I dont think I will be back anytime soon and I dont recommend going to 518 for any special occasion!

I got hooked on 411 West while I was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I was so glad to discover that I could live in Raleigh and have my 411 too in the form of its sister restaurant, 518. This place has become our old standby - the place where we go when we want a great meal, great wine, great service, and don't want to take any chances. I've never had a meal there that wasn't delicious. I love their wine menu - kudos to the sommelier for not being too snobby to include North Carolina wines on the list. And hooray for their new valet parking service - before parking was a bit of a headache, but now it's a breeze. I do recommend reservations for weekend nights - we once spent over an hour in the bar waiting for a table for a large party, but we didn't mind. The bar is flowing and the drinks are good and our meal was worth the wait.

My friends love to come to this place and I think it does not beat out Mellow Mushroom. Over-rated in my opinion. The last time we were there the computers were down and we were quoted 30 minutes and afte and hour and a half of waiting I convinced my friends to eat somewhere else. For being Italian food, the service should be quicker

I had a Pasta dish at 518 on this last visit and it was really good.

It did take quite a while before our waiter ever arrived - I would say 10 minutes at the table before we even got water or silverware. Once the food came though, all was forgotten. I think they have a good menu with variety and at a reasonable price. 518 is an old warehouse type building and is very comfortable and airy. If you want to impress your boss or preacher, try reserving the table next to the lion-head fountain.

Others at our table had various Panini sandwiches. The ones without sauces were a little dry, so yu might want to be careful with that choice, or request some sort of sauce.

Overall this is a great restaurant. Just wish that waiter would get his hands out of his pockets.

I was very pleased with my boyfriend and I's date last night at the 518 Off Glenwood South. The Spinach dip was wonderful and full of flavor and I was pleased. The presentation was very very up to standard and so was the flavor in all of our meal. Bread before your meal really says something about a restaurant and the bread was wonderful. It is very properly priced and affordable. I had one of the best portabellas of my life there last night. I was pleased and will go back again. I am quite suprised with any of the bad reviews but everyone sees things differently I suppose.

My husband and I stopped by about 10:00 one night for dessert and we waited for the hostess and she FINALLY came. We sat down and it took so long for someone to come wipe off the table, I did it myself. The bartender finally came to help us, but by that point, we were on our way out the door. I happened to see the manager and told him about it and he was sarcastic.

I like the open, organic feel of this restaurant--rosemary bushes line the front entrance, warm tone on the walls, great natural light by day and mood light at night. The food is great and in line with prices for the Glenwood area. I've never had any problems with the service--prompt and friendly. Terrific anniversary or date location.

Surprised at the negative reviews. This is pretty much the spot that got Glenwood south of the ground. It can be very loud depending on where you sit, but thats some of the fun of it for me as your conversation gets an odd intimacy as it's drowned out by all the others. I tend to always order the crab or the whole wheat fettucini and usually go with the heavy but delicious shrimp and scallops bienville for appetizer. The service has slipped a bit since it's heyday, but still good in my opinion. If you've never been, you should go at least once. Bonus: No more 2 hour waits for a table on the weekends...

i was hoping for a romantic evening with my girlfriend for her birthday. i thought this would be a romantic spot. it was not. very loud, we sat a row over from the bar, right behind the hostess station. that did not impress me. i thought the dress was casual, very nice, but it was not. we were dressed very nicely, most of the people were in jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes, not the atmosphere i was looking for. the food was good price, but not what i wanted the evening to be.

I wish I had known about this place before. I took an old girlfriend here for V-day. The staff was great and the food was pretty good and better yet...affordable. If you want to try something new, check this place out. The dress is casual so leave your suit and tie at home.

Pros: Affordable

Cons: Too bright.

I have been disappointed every time I have been dragged here to lunch or dinner here with friends. The menu and food are mediocre, the food is usually cold, it takes an act of god to get your drink refilled, and the wait staff acts rude. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant.
