I think the owner changed hands. They used to have a unique menu that included authentic Japanese dishes like grilled fish. They used to have fantastic sushi and food from the kitchen although service was bad. Now the service is great, but the food is just ok.

I went there for lunch, and the menu was different. You can get standard items like chicken teriyaki and tempura, but nothing beyond that. The server was friendly, the food was good, and the price was reasonable.

There is nothing special about this place anymore, so I personally won't be going back.

I've been to Sushi Yoshi many times, and it has always been consistently great food. It is usually pretty quiet, even on a Friday night, and it's a relaxing place to have dinner.

This is a very fun place to go, with good food and it's pretty affordable also. We always had a good time going here.

I've eaten at Sushi-Yoshi once or twice a year for the past ~5 years. I've had dishes ranging from chicken teriyaki to noodle bowls to sushi. I think it's the best sushi restaurant in the Durham / Chapel Hill area. Service may be a bit slow, but I frequently go with a large group so I'm a bit forgiving.

Pros: Good Food

I live close to sushi-yoshi so I thought I would see if it was as good as some of the japanese restaurants I'd been to in Raleigh. The waitress had no knowledge of the menu, when asked questions she got an attitude and couldn't give a correct answer. She never once asked us if we were enjoying everything or if we needed anything. She didn't even refill our water, another waitress came over for that. The food was okay, definitly not worth the money you pay. I'd prefer a waitress that knows something about the food they serve, and is polite, the way we were being to her. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I thought that this place was very good. Granted the service was a little slow, but in all fairness there was only one waitress. The service was very friendly and special requests were not a problem. The sushi is portioned well (not tiny pieces of fish on huge portions of rice; very balanced) and quite fresh. There are a good number of creative rolls as well as the traditional rolls. The sushi chef seemed experienced and was very nice. Overall, my experience was very pleasant, and I will most certainly be returning.

Pros: sushi, friendly /accomodating service

Cons: slightly slow

I enjoy this place for special occasions and usually go with one other person but the last time we had 4 in our party. When ordering for 2 one of the boats is a feast but when ordering a boat for 4 it is twice the price for very close to the same amount of food. You'd be better off ordering two different boats more food and more variety.

We are new to the area; we used to go to a different sushi restaurant every week back in LA, but there aren't many here:(. Anyway, this is the first Japanese restaurant we have tried in the triangle area. I was pleasantly surprised. Their rolls are not bad! Certainly not even close to the best sushi I had, but it is better than 'some' sushi restaurants in LA. I think people who are complaining about cold rolls don't know that the rolls are not supposed to be served warm?! Many Japanese restaurants nowadays serve warm rolls (because they call them fusion), but sushi is not served warm traditionally. Also, the price was actually pretty good as a Japanese restaurant. The service was quite slow, but it's something to be expected because they only have one sushi chef. It would be bad when they start letting untrained cook make sushi! I have also heard people complaining about sushi chefs not being Japanese. I was like that until I discovered that many best japanese restaurants I've been to in LA were run by Koreans. We would definitely go back. Meanwhile, please keep us updated about good sushi restaurants in the triangle!

Pros: Nice ambience, nice people, good food, good price.

Cons: Slow.. rolls are kind of ordinary (tasty though)

Went to Sushi Yoshi for the first time because it is close. We have been looking for a great sushi restaurant but have not had the best luck in the south. We got a roll that we did not order, but it was the best roll out of the three that we did get. The spider roll was average, the dragon roll was pretty good. Very affordable for a dinner meal. I recommend ordering something OUT OF the ordinary, and checking your order before your take out.

Pros: right near/in Chapel Hill

Cons: average sushi

.

Old fish and wrong type of rice seasoned the wrong way makes inedible sushi.
Even Akai-Hana which is of low kaiten-sushi quality, is better than this shop.

Pros: None that I could think of

Cons: Bad sushi

Sushi-Yoshi is under new management--a family from Korea who run many upscale restaurants over there. The food is FANTASTIC, and yet so affordable. I would encourage anyone who enjoys Japanese food in general and especially sushi in particular to go there and give it a try--you won't regret it.

Cons: NONE!

I have eaten homemade Japanese food since I was in the womb!! I have not eaten the sashimi at this restaurant, but everything that I have eaten has been very similar to anything and everything my mom has made. I go to Sushi Yoshi whenever I get the hankering for "nihonshoku" (Japanese food) since she lives back in Japan! Go during lunch and get the lunch special! It's tasty, changes from day to day and feeds two!!

It took over an hour for our sushi and tables seated after us got their sushi before we did. The food was horrible; the spider roll and eel were cold and we lost our appetite after the waitress came to the table, holding back tears after being fired. A well-run business would either wait until the end of a shift or make the staff leave immediately. We complained about the food and management never came out to apologize, though they did relay that they would charge us only for what we ate. This ended up meaning that we were charged for a whole roll even if we only ate two pieces. By then, we just wanted to leave. I recommend avoiding this place at all costs. If you must go, pack a picnic basket, as they apparrently can't handle preparing food unless the restaurant is half-empty.

when i go to sushi yoshi it's like a hit or miss. most recently i went for dinner and sat at the sushi bar, and i quite enjoyed it. the fish was above average, and the chefs were japanese (a big plus in my book - at least i can chat it up with them). however, the previous time i went i ordered kitsune udon. the age (fried thing) in the udon was, get this, the inari-zushi skin. i couldn't believe they did that. as you can imagine, that ruined the taste of the soup, and i was pretty pissed. oh well, like i said, hit or miss.

I was impressed by the atmosphere in this Chapel Hill House of Fish, especially by the sans-shoe tatami room. My only criticism is a lack of creativity and selection in the Sushi department. However, this is a great place to get some solid staples at an incredible value.

I live a good deal away from this resturant, yet i live it. It has to be one of my favorite resturants ever. The food is the best around. The sushi is superb. I have had sushi from many different places and have not found any that is as good and fresh as here. Sushi-Yoshi was the resturant that got me to like sushi. I had never had it until I came here with a friend. He ordered some and I am one who will try anything at least once, so I had some. It was excelent and I have loved it since. The sushi is not the only food that is good. I have not had enough visits to tried everything on the menu, but what I've tried I loved. This resturant has to be the greatest Japanese resturant on the east coast, if not in the whole USA.

This is a place that not only provides economical yet quality dishes, a warm casual atmosphere, and a satisfying dining experience. Greeted by friendly staff at the door, you have the choice of the sushi bar, a booth, or a traditional "Tatami" room. An extensive menu also leaves you wanting a little of everything. At the bar, there are skilled and personable chefs eager to provide you with the freshest, ornately arranged sushi. There are often specials offered that leave your taste buds tingling with delight, a full stomach, AND a full wallet. If you know fresh, professionally made sushi, you know this is the place to be.

A visit to Sushi-Yoshi is like visitng a friend. I have been dining there now for over 6 years and the food and quality of service remains the same. Good and better yet! I would recommend this establishment to both friends and visitors.
