The service here lacks compassion for obstetrics care. I felt as if I was being a burden to the nurses on call. If you have a normal, low risk pregnancy I assume this practice is ok but if you are a person that needs compassion and understanding and have a more complicated pregnancy, I would definitely not recommend Harris and Smith

We moved to the area and I was "desperately seeking an ob/gyn" and the receptionist at Harris and Smith was so helpful. After reading the reviews I was anxious when I went to my appointment... fearing the worst. The office staff was super nice, my nurse, Cathy, was friendly and empathetic. I found Dr. Harris to be professional, compassionate, and efficient. The on-line digi-chart which enabled me to complete my paperwork ahead of time helped minimize the wait time in the MD office. Contrary to other reviews I would recommend this practice and their beautiful new office.

I must admit, that after reading the various reviews I was compelled to write one of my own, regarding this practice. The administrative staff at Harris&Smith, is very unprofessional and lack the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the basic duties when assisting patients. The nursing support staff, is also lacking when it comes to basic skills and knowledge for patient care.

I have been going to Harris & Smith for 4 years at the recommendation of two friends who both used them. Since that time, both of these friends found new practices because of the business-like treatment they were given after losses. I was unfortunately enough to see why they left first-hand. I came in for my annual exam - made months before - and after an hour of waiting in the waiting room I asked how much longer I'd have to wait. I was told it would be another half hour until I got into a room and no guarantee how much longer after that. They said it wasn't common but there was an "emergency". They could have told me about the so-called emergency when I checked in and give me the courtesy of a choice. When I said so, they said the issue is getting a physical exam room but I could see another doctor immediately. This made absolutely no sense to me. It seemed like they couldn't keep the lies straight, were running behind and were trying to cover it up. Too bad I had a friend who waited an hour in the waiting room the week before. Neither of us will be returning.

So far my first visit was very good. Over the years, I have heard very good reviews about the H&S. They have been in practice for a very long time so that should say something about thier work and patientele. I feel the nursing staff could be more friendly as well as the receptionist area. I was very appreciative of the Dr. S. for asking me if there was anything else I needed or was concerned about and explained everything to me. He was very concerned. Overall, i will be going back.

I am 6 months pregnant and have been receiving prenatal care from this office. I am very dissatisfied with the care provided. The providers rush through every visit, and do not exam you probably. At my last visit the nurse noticed my blood pressure was extremely elevated 150/125, and made me lie down in a dark room. The doctor came in gave me a quick once over and told me I was good to go. I had to point out the fact that my blood pressure was high. He then looked at my chart and replied oh yeah it is elevated, try changing your diet and exercising. No concern what so ever. I am finding a new doctor.

I guess it's true- only people who want to gripe write reviews. I've had 2 children and been a patient at Harris & Smith for over 10 years- and couldn't be happier. I have dealt with all the physicians (as they make sure you know them all prior to delivery) and was exceptionally pleased with their knowledge and professionalism.

I can only guess that other satisfied patients- in this large group have no reason to write reviews. Like me, they probably don't want to share.

I'm looking for a new doctor.

I am uncomfortable as a patient in an office where my doctor is flirting with his entirely young, attractive, female ancillary staff.

If I had confidence in the medical care I received there then I could easily have overlooked the poor bedside manner, and concluded that he's good but unprofessional.

My conclusion is that he's not very good and not very professional.

To be fair, I have to say that there are many doctors in the group and my very bad experience was with only one. Some (though not all) of the ancillary staff seemed immature and unprofessional but it was clear to me that the MD working with them would not take an interest in training them to act professionally, since it seems not to be a priority to him in his own practice.

There are probably some very professional staff members in that office sine the group seems so big, so I feel bad giving a poor review but I have to say my own experience was REALLY bad and if I could give zero stars it better reflect how I felt walking out of that office.

I'm definitely finding a new doctor.

Being a foreigner in the US health care insurance is complicated. I've visited their office once with breast problems, they were short and did not say anything than I could find on the net too, no mammogram whatsoever.
After I've found out that I'm pregnant I called them to schedule an appointment: from the first pregnancy I knew that I have to have a vaginal ultrasound to determine the age of the pregnancy as soon as possible to be able to have the most accurate due date. When I got there they were cold and unfriendly. After I've showed them my insurance card they wanted me to pay much more than I would have had to, and they told me that I even can not be sure if I'll get the ultrasound at all, cause it has to be based on medical necessity. Also they claimed that I'll have to pay sum.$500 for the prenatal visits, when my insurance specifically covers prenatal care. When I told them it's not true, and they have the wrong information, they insisted they're right, I could not convince them, since they thought I don't understand my insurance.
After I called my insurance, found out that I was in fact right, I called Durham OB&GYN, they got me an appointment, and told me that at the first visit I'll have bloodtest and vaginal ultrasound done, just as I was prepared and I was expecting to have at Harris&Smith.
I can not imagine why they were so rude and uncaring, when an office 10 mi from there knows exactly what needs to be done at 6-7-8 weeks of pregnancy.
I advise you to find another practice.

I've been a patient with the practice since 1999. I've enjoyed the care received for general GYN visits, but my experience for OB has not been as favorable. I'm not sure if the "shortness" of the nurses in terms of answering questions or the inability of the office managers to handle paper work is because there are so many patients or because patients are taken granted.

I've often felt like assumptions were made that I understood my options when I did not. If I called and left a question for the nurse maybe she'd get back to me the same day or maybe not. Often I found myself calling multiple times just to get a response! I felt detached at times from access to my doctor.

The only consist aspect of my experience has been billing. Sometimes it appears as if the same lab tests were repeated if I visited the Durham office and then the Chapel Hill office.
I'm actively considering switching to another practice.

Harris and Smith is very uncaring and unsympathetic and extremely cold. They also do not keep up their records or pass along information from the front office back when you have an emergency visit (or any visit for that matter). I changed to anther doctor as quickly as possible.
