Let me begin by saying that I recently had a delicious lunch at Cinelli's (in the same room as 604 - it's basically the same place) and was very pleased. So when I saw a Groupon offer come up for 604, I purchased it immediately.\r

Tonight my friends and I ate at Cinelli's for a friends birthday. In total there were about 16 of us, so a decent size party. To start with the waiter came around and only took one drink order at a time. He would take the order, then leave the table without speaking to anyone else and then come back maybe 5 minutes later without the drink! This went on for quite some time to the point that people started going to the bar in order to get their drinks because it was quicker to just get it yourself. (at no point was anyone offered a refill even on water without having to ask) There were a couple of people at the table who were never even offered a drink!

Next, he took our food order which was another train wreck. It seemed like he could only do one thing at a time and he didn't really care at all. The food was sub-par, and that's generous. The food is also very expensive...the bill for my husband and myself ended up being $85.

When he came with the checks, same thing...he would bring a couple at a time and then disappear without even collecting the checks that he had handed out. Two people at the table ordered dessert and he brought them their check for their dessert separately before he had even brought them their dessert! My husband ended up having to hunt the waiter down for our change, and when he finally found him the waiter pulled it out of his pocket and said he thought he gave it to him already. (I certainly wasn't going to tell him to keep the change after that experience...not to mention with gratuity tacked on he got a $14 tip just from us which he certainly did not earn)

This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. The food was just ok, the bill was way too much, and the service was god awful. I felt completely ripped off when we left, and I really don't mind paying for good food and good service, unfortunately this place offered neither. That's 4 hours of my life I will never get back....yes...4 hours is how long it took us to eat there with the waiter disappearing every 5 minutes! I would highly suggest staying away from this place unless you like paying for overpriced food and being ignored or treated like crap!

I don't get why everyone is still talking about Tosca!!!! The restaurant has closed. In it's space is 604 West Morgan an upscale super delicious spot! I was there for the opening (invited by a friend) and found the food to be fantastic and the ambiance very cool. Originally from Los Angeles, I am thrilled to find a place like this here.

I'm with the New Yorker- the place is top notch!

After reviewing the comments below I also didnt go to 604 for dinner . I'm so happy I did . It is clear that the problems of the former restaraunt are gone. Great food , friendly staff a beautiful bar and patio. The food is as good as any restaraunt in Durham and I feel is on par with a Chicago or NY italain restaraunt. I had linguine black ink pasta " WOW" Keep this place in mind because n a few months when the word is out , they will be slammed . I made my reservation on opentable 41/2 star rating . enjoy

So we decided to try Tosca since it was near the DPAC and we were going to see Wicked! It has great atmosphere and pretty table setting. We were seated quickly as we had a reservation.

The server Kelli E had the personality and demeanor of an East German female wrestler. She never asked if our food was ok. She was not personable at all. She acted like she was mad we were there, but that she would push through it somehow. We did get our food in a timely manner, though.

I had the caprese salad. I love this salad and was looking forward to it, especially since we were in an Italian restaurant!!. What a disappointment! The mozzarella cheese tasted like the bulk kind you can get at BJ's. I was expecting that a fancy place like that would have made their own. The tomatoes tasted like they were bought from a grocery store. They were very bland with no discernible flavor. I can understand doing that on some dishes to save money, but not on a caprese salad!! They could have gone to the farmer's market and gotten some good tomatoes! There was hardly any balsamic vinegar on my salad. She never came back to see if we liked our appetizers, so I couldn't ask for more. The salad only had tiny shreds of basil on it. I am used to whole basil leaves on the mozzarella and the tomato slices. Oh, and to top it off, there was NO salt on the salad. I mean come on!!! I couldn't believe they bothered to serve that dish!!! It was embarrassing for them!!!

I also had a half pasta dish. It was ok. About the same you would get at Johnny Carinos or Chilis. It would be fine for half the price. I just didn't come for an average experience.

Then I went to the restroom. First, they did not have a sign to the restrooms. Other wait staff had to point me in the right direction. I go into the first stall, and the door will not stay locked. They had incorrectly installed the door so that it would not latch with the frame. I went and told the little waif of a girl at the counter where you first walk in. She stared right through me like she didn't know what to do with this information. I was expecting "Sorry ma'am, I'll be sure to tell our manager". I received nothing of the kind. She stared through me and said 'ok'. Ya know, there were a ton of lady servers. They all HAD to be aware that the door didn't latch. Why didn't THEY mention this to the boss to get it fixed??? You don't want to have to wait for the two other stalls to open up because you can't latch the first stall. Ridiculous!!!!! The manager ought to be ashamed!!!

I will never go back.

On the night of my senior prom in June of 2009 I wanted to be sure that my group of friends and myself had a great dinner before the big party, so we decided to try out Tosca as it was just next to our high school (Durham School of the Arts). When we walked in and were seated t(he last two in our party came in 5 minutes after) we all began to order our beverages which was followed by our server warning us that we will only have that table for a maximum of 40 minutes. We all looked at each other in astonishment...there's a time limit? Due to their insufficient seating which is not the patron's fault? We continued to order, trying to rush in order to get in as much time as we can, and when it came to my order I asked for one of the pasta dishes on the menu except I can't eat tomatoes so I of course asked that those please not be added. The server quickly spat back that "the chef will not be making any special orders for the tonight, so it will come with tomatoes". We all ate and tried to laugh at what was going on so far, everyone seemed to be content with their food (though HIGHLY overpriced), then we all paid and one of the guys said that they were just running to use the restroom while the girls got the jackets. As we were getting ready to leave the manager (a very short & stout brunette girl) comes to our table and says "are you all on your way because we have someone else waiting for this table right now?" we told her we were just getting our stuff together while someone was in the restroom, she walked off. She comes back 2 minutes later and very sharply says "can i help you move your things for you and sit them at the bar?". At this point I had enough of this treatment, and let her have it, explaining that she and her staff had been completely unprofessional the entire night and that it's quite clear and sad that we would have 3 times better service/treatment in a Chili's. She replied with "You had 40 minutes, I told your server to let you know that. You getting an attitude is beyond me and personally I don't give a shi* what you think your service would have been like somewhere else". I stood there wide-eyed, completely taken aback. A manager treats customers this way? In short, Tosca is not an establishment that offers decent service and especially management. If I could give this a rating of any amount less than 1 star I wouldn't hesitate. Take your time and money and spend them elsewhere (there's plenty of great, courteous restaurants all over downtown Durham). Hope this is of help!

Pros: Convenient location

Cons: The worst management, not enough seating

Excellent atmosphere and outdoor dining patio;
Decent food with good taste, not a large amount, also not WOW impressive;
Price is high for the quality of food.
I like their logo though: local and organic.

My husband and I tried this restaurant based on all the excellent reviews while staying in Durham. It was extremely disappointing. Being Italian myself, I am quite picky about Italian restaurants. When we walked into the restuarant it was completely empty at 5:45pm -- this was our first warning sign. The staff was borderline rude, definately not friendly --we did not have reservations, but were asked if we did even though their reservation book was obviously blank for the hour that we dined. The food was horribly bland and the service extremely average -- this was not what one would expect from a restaurant with an average price range of $27-28. It was sad to see such an architechturally cool place go to waste because of such bad management. Next time we are in Durham, we will trying another Italian restaurant. This one definitely does not deserve a return visit.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! The new manager Anthony is PHEMENOAL and treated us like stars! Monday nights are half bottle of wine nights so we've taken the opportunity to sample higher priced bottles that we typically wouldn't try because of the large price tag. Anthony made great recommendations based upon our feedback and he's even gone as far as pair recommendations for food. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! I'm not from Durham but I had the opportunity to stay for several weeks and visiting Tosca's was a weekly treat and I can't wait to get back to.

Pros: Phemonial Manager Anthony, most servers a good, exceptioanl food with THE BEST ANTI-PASTA i've had in the area

Cons: Not really a con but I'd recommend calling to make a reservation if your dining on a Friday or Saturday simply becuase they are so good that everyone wants in.

Although a bit challenging to find at first, Tosca is an upscale restaurant with just the right ambience for a romantic night out on the town. The food was tasty, if a bit overpriced. The servers are friendly and attentive. I would visit again, although not with a group.

We came here for a family event and had a large party (8 people). The service was very much on top of things the whole night, and the food was excellent all around. The only criticism I heard that night was that my husband thought the gnocchi was a small dish, but they were still delicious.

I live right next door to Tosca in West Village. As a result, I'd like nothing better than to write a positive review of Tosca, but just can't do it. I've been three times and each time I've been disappointed with the quality of the food and service. Frankly, if I were guessing where I was based solely on the food I would say Johnny Carino's. The sauces and ingredients are simply poor and the combinations are uninspired.

The service had largely been fine until my most recent visit which was a nightmare. In chronological order there was an Equal wrapper in my friend's diet coke (seriously), the waitress gave my friend a papercut on his forehead while taking my menu (again, seriously), the waitress brought us another table's drinks, and later forgot to inform me the ravioli special had changed when they ran out of mushrooms. To be fair, everyone can have a bad night and the manager did her best to make it up to us. If not for the consistently below average food I'd be willing to give them a mulligan on this one.

The atmosphere is nice, but ultimately doesn't even come close make up for the overpriced and underwhelming menu items. Skip it.

Excellent experience all around. Food was exceptional and well poritioned. Great atmosphere. Service was professional and very personal. In my opinion the dessert menu is the weakest link; lacking in varity. But don't let that stop you from trying this place. It was oh... so... good ! I defintely will go back! Enjoy!

Setting: Lovely renovated warehouse building. Interior: nicely spaced tables and chairs of decent quality.

In search of okay Italian food, we visited Tosca.

Tagliatelli with spinach: Pasta was done correctly. The cream sauce was not good. Use of tomato in
a cream sauce dish along with sauteed spinach is suspect. Portion was VERY big.
Ngocchi: Tomato sauce is too sweet.
Prosecco was $33 a bottle, which is ok when it retails ~$13-15 at Total Wine.
Appetizer plate was ok - but why do you serve hummus in an Italian eatery? (I've never seen
that in all travels in Italia)

Conclusion: For $90 (for 2 people), it's not bad...

Very good food and service. Staff was attentive; water glasses were kept filled all the time and you can chose between tap or sparkling water. Nice wine selection by the bottle or glass. Not a cheap meal, but, very nice and relaxing experience. Address is a little misleading. Best to enter from the Fernway St side of the complex off of Duke St. During nice weather, outside dining.

On the night we last visited, the restaurant was rather lightly visited, although it was Labor Day weekend and one might expect a lot of people were out of town. The food that we had was truly outstanding, the wine list was very good, the service was attentive and we enjoyed the experience a great deal. I would recommend it, especially as a nice place to take your significant other for a relaxing good time. It's a little out of the way in a location that, but don;t let that deter you. We've been there before and will certainly be there again.

We dined at Tosca this afternoon (a group of 20 people) for adults. They accomodated a reservation and set up a menu for us before we had arrived. We had a limited amount of time, and did not feel rushed in any sense, we even made it back early after dinner and dessert. The food was great, of 20 people no one was dis-satified with the quality of food or service. The desserts were extroidinary as well! I love this restaraunt for a simple night out, or a group setting as well. Thanks to everyone who works there!

Fantastic food, ambience and wine list make Tosca "one of our favorite restaurants." The tomato-basil linguini and bistecca are always great and the recent pear salad was delicious! The fresh-baked bread is, by far, the BEST around. Our only suggestion for improvement at Tosca is regarding service. While our wait staff have always been "average" to "above average," we sometimes feel like we are being snubbed or caused to wait unnecessarily when we fail to make a reservation. I can understand having to wait if there is a crowd, but there have been times we've arrived and were one of two or three couples in the restaurant. We've learned to make a reservation or to call ahead, but wish there was more warmth and welcome at Tosca. That would be all it would take for us to consider Tosca our very "favorite restaurant."

We've learned to make a reservation or to call ahead, but wish there was more warmth and welcome at Tosca. That would be all it would take for us to consider Tosca our very "favorite restaurant."

Pros: Food, Wine, Ambience

Cons: Host Service

.

We went on a Saturday night, party of 4, and had a most enjoyable dining experience. The Tosca ravioli (lobster) was served in a light cream sauce and was truly irresistable. The gnocchi pomodoro was plentiful, succulent, and most memorable. The chocolate mousse was out of this world. We highly recommend a visit to Tosca Ristorante Italiano for local residents and out of towners.

Restaurant is beautiful and drinks are reasonable, but food and service were terrible- the chef needs to learn the difference between a beef reduction and beef gravy. The seafood appetizer is overpriced and ill-prepared and the entrees were at best mediocre. Topped off with negligent staff and service, and high prices for the quality. I'm glad I paid so much for this experience.

Went back to Tosca for a visit not to long ago. Restaurant is still the most beautiful in the triangle. Food was not the best it has ever been, but nothing to sneeze at. I reccomend. But be prepared to spend some money. It ain't cheap. Go and enjoy, it is a real treat.

I love Italian food and decided to try Tosca on a whim, and I was very happy with my experience. The food was very good (not necessarily inventive or out-of-the-ordinary good but yummy just the same), and the wine list was great--there's nothing better than a Brunello with Italian food (this wine is difficult to find in the triangle). I also liked Tosca's open and spacious dining room--many of the triangle's better restaurants have cramped dining areas.

My husband and I dined here on our anniversary, and we both thought the atmosphere was very romantic. The food was good (the artichoke stuffed chicken was excellent) and the waiter was attentive, but allowed us our privacy. We will highly recommend it to our friends, and we will be back!

4 of us went July 19. It was far better than expected, even after one previous excellent experience. 3 different Northern Italian entrees - all superb. Wait staff was attentive, but not obsequious. Better than my last two trips to Il Palio, at much lower cost. Given some poor reviews here, we thought our previous experience (last Fall) may have been a fluke - but our out-of-town guest left very impressed.

Pros: Excellent staff, Good food, Patio on nice nights

Cons: Can be noisy, Parking

Outstanding Lamb, the mint reduction sauce was sweet and outstanding, the lamb was the best I have had in the triangle.
Wild mushroom meal was very nice. Waite staff was informed and attentive. We love the atmosphere and the jazz background music is the best around. We will be back as regulars.

Went to Tosca with good expectations, yet I was terribly disappointed. The food was mediocre, and the service was TERRIBLE!!! Our waiter was extremely rude, and didn't follow up with any of our requests.

Tosca is to fine italian dining what Golden Corral is to a fine steak house. The food is only so-so to begin with -- and the service ruins what little that has to offer.

Beautifulk redo of the old garage at West Village. Excellent antipasto and desserts to die for (lemon torte especially). Plenty of room between tables (compare the nightmare squeezes of other top Durham restaurants) and attentive but not fussy service. Simply wonderful.

Pros: quality, historic building, attention to detail

The food was good but it was NOT what was described on the menu. I ordered the "Pork Tenderloin stuffed with spinach served over risotto." First, the pork served was a loin NOT a ternderloin. And the most shocking was the "risotto" was long grain white rice not arborio. This error demonstrates a complete lack of food knowledge or at least a lack of caring for its customers. The least they can do is serve what's on the menu.

I really enjoyed my dining experience here. The fish special was perfect and my friend's pasta was quite good. The tartuffe was particularly satisfying. Overall, it was a great meal and I will definitely come back!

We were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. The CitySearch review was not that favorable, so we didn't know what to expect. The location is wonderful once you find the place. The food is great, the mozzarella on my pasta had to have come straight from Italy. We had spectacular service! The wine list is very, very good. We will definitely make the trip to Durham to go back.

Tosca only gets better. Now that it is time for citysearch voting, the restaurant wins my vote in many categories. First the staff is wonderful just like the previous review says. Many seem to be familiar faces, great for keeping up the good work. I live close by the restaurant, so the lunch iis great for me. Also the bar with the live music is a cool addition to downtown. One of it's very best kept secrets. Spread the word, Tosca IS THE PLACE to dine in Durham.

This restaurant is well worth a trip to downtown Durham, and if you live downtown, you should treat yourself regularly. Excellent Italian cuisine (i.e. no crappy lasgana here folks!) and a very knowledgeable, professional staff make this a great place to visit. Best seafood in downtown. Obvious lower East Side influence. Just go.

This place is great. I thought the service was top notch, the food is excellent - highly recommened the Liguini con pomodoro e mozarella and they have the best salads I've had in a while. Deserts could be better but they are still very good. The ambience is just excellent. One of the best restaraunts I have been to in the triangle area.
