I used to go to Joyces at the old location and I am so glad they brought back the buffet from old. I think it is actually better now. I did not like how when they moved to the new location you had to go to a window. The fried chicken is awesome. Salad bar is great. Most people really like the ribs also. The mac and cheese was really good one time I went but the next time it was not available :( Me and a co-worker were really looking forward to it.

I went here for lunch with a client, after reading the review in the Newa and Observer. I wanted her to get a taste of the South, since she is from MA. I think Joyce's was an excellent choice. The food was delicious, and there was plenty of it. The price was right, too. I will certainly make another visit the next time I am in the area.

My family and I just discovered Joyce??s restaurant. We love it and will continue to visit often. The staff is not the fastest, but they are friendly and get things done. The fried chicken is to die for and the collards are better than mamas (Shhh don??t tell her). The only issue I saw was getting our food at the window or I should say the line of people getting there food at the window. If I could change one thing it would be to serve cafeteria style, where you go down the line. It would reduce the line of people and serve more people faster, but still cut down on waist which I think you have a lot of with a buffet. No matter? we will return for some of the best country food ever.

I have been a patron of Joyce's Family Restaurant for more than 10 years and I have never been disappointed. Yes, she has moved to a new place and, as with any new business, kinks must be worked out. You can not beat her home, cooked meals. I don't even like fried chicken such as Kentucky Fried, but I love Joyce's chicken. Her fresh vegetables such as collards, mashed potatoes, candied yams, etc. are worth the trip. If you leave the restaurant hungry, you only have yourself to blame. The restaurant is known for its' family atmosphere and is frequented by locals who know where to go for the best food. I was at the Sunday buffet on January 15th, 2011 and I am including a link for those who want to see what the restaurant is like on it's busiest day. You can see for yourself how well managed the restaurant is and how happy the customers are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTtrSAHuFmU

As I was leaving I overheard someone tell her friend "Just be patient, they have kinks to work out but it's all about the food." Truer words can't be spoken. Yes we had to wait a little while and get up to get our own extra napkins (we had the ribs) but the food was amazingly delicious. It was like Sunday dinner at Granny's house, and Granny's a great cook. I know with time they'll work out the kinks in the service.

Thanks Joe. We appreciate the kind words. Hope to see you again soon.

My family and I went to eat at Joyce's last Sunday, it was a HORRIBLE experience. We got there around 1:05pm and was seated fairly quickly and we did not leave until 3:15pm. We waited 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order and then another 30 minutes for our actual drinks. We then waited a hour for our food. If we wanted a refill, we had to get up and find someone to get it. We ordered family style and they kept running out of foods. Right before we left Joyce's had to close because they had ran out of most of their food. It's a shame because they do have good food. We will never go back and the family that sat behind us said the same thing! It was completely ridiculous!!

Response from this business:

Charlotte you must have come Sunday 28th of August because on Sunday the 4th of Sep everything went smoothly. Everyone was happy. We had more costumers than we had on the 28th but we were able to handle the crowd and from the people I was able to talk to everyone was happy. We sincerely hope you decide to return.

Wow has this place gone down hill. Went there last night which was our first time in the new location. We went to the old location right before the move so it was about a month ago. I could not believe our experience last night at the new spot. We waited about 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order then we waited close to an hour for our food to come to the table for it to be cold and tasteless. The smothered chicken was simply fried chicken dipped in gravy slapped on a plate. No gravy included. Her delicious green beans, collards and chicken pastry all lacked seasoning. The food was cold and the beef tips were seasoned too much. My daughter looked at her plate and immediately asked the "waitress" to take it back. She ended up eating at Zaxby's. Joyce, my family and I have been coming to your restaurant for years and have recommended you on several occasions but I hate to say that that will not happen again. You had a good thing going when you had the buffet but with the raise in price - $2 more for the all you can eat concept, .50 cents for the tea (which we were not offered refills) and you now charge $2 for a slice of cake that used to come with your meal I am afraid you will not last. I think the "newness" of your business is bringing the customers in but seriously I don't see a lot or repeat customers for you. This really breaks my heart that you chose to go this route and to lose many of your faithful followers.

Response from this business:

Linda, sorry about your wait. It took us a couple of weeks to work out the kinks and get the right personnel. We have been in business since 1997 so we are not new. Thanks for your concern, but we are doing just fine. We serviced over 370 people last Sunday with and average wait of less than 12 mins from order to table. This was a combination of our loyal customers, and new and repeat customers. All of the people that I spoke to said they loved the food. Miss Joyces reputation is built her food.
.

I haven't been to the "new" location and don't intend to. Joyce couldn't handle the old place ,let alone a higher overhead place as she has stepped into now! We ate last at the old place several years ago and it was a lousy experiece then and would expect nothing less now.You could never get food any better,IF THEY HAD ANY ! There was never anything on the buffet and they would always say it was coming ! IF ,they brought anymore out it was only a dabble ,so never enough to go around. The last time I asked for my money back and never looked back. Joyce NEEDS someone to RUN the restaurant and she needs to cook. Its a shame ,but when you can't even get the name of the restaurant correctly laid out on the sign outside, what hope does the restaurant have ??

Response from this business:

Wayne If you havent been to the new restaurant I don't understand why you have chose to wait until now to make these negative comment. The sign is like that because Miss Joyce said she dreamed about this building over a year before we got in there and that is how the sign looked in the dream so she didn't change it. Wayne you are welcome at Joyces anytime.

I agree with the last review. I am broken hearted over the changes you have made. We went to try the new place last Sunday and couldn't get in the door because there were so many people standing at the cashier and no one was helping them. We stood for 10 minutes waiting and when someone finally started seating people, others became angry because they had been waiting longer to be sat. It was chaotic and we decided to come back when it was less busy.

So we came back another day and it was a horrible experience. We were sat right away but waited at our table for 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. The girl who sat us eventually came over and asked if anyone took our drink order and we told her no so she brought us our drinks and left. We sat for another 10 minutes waiting for someone to take our order. I finally went and asked one of the ladies in the food window if she could do it. She did and we waiting about 40 minutes for our food. In that 40 minutes we had to flag someone down for silverware and more tea. We also had to ask someone to put some lettuce on the salad bar. When our food finally arrived after over an hour of being there our order was wrong. We had to flag someone down again to get it corrected and then had to get someone's attention to ask for the hushpuppies that were supposed to come with the meal. We were told they were out but a few minutes later someone brought 3 on a dish for the 3 of us to share. The food was good, but it's been better (Especially the hushpuppies) and we missed the variety of the buffet and the fact that you were offered dessert as well. THe person who brought our food recognized that we had been there for a very long time and tore up our ticket for us and said we didn't have to pay. We appreciated that. But we would have much rather paid for the good experience that we are used to. Joyce's was one of the many things I truly loved about our town and I am so sad that you are doing things differently. We never, ever had any type of problem at the old place when it was a buffet and always suggested your restaurant to friends. Now, we don't feel confident in doing that. The new method is too complicated. Simplicity is your friend.

What happened? Joyce we loved your old place with the buffet however we tried your new place & was totally dissatisfied as with others . We sat down,no menus for the longest time,no waitress for up to 20 mins ,then a piece of paper for a menu with most of your food marked out?. What wasn't marked was out ? No buffet? Joyce please fix these issues because I want to come back.

Jon, Thank you for being a customer at Joyce & Family. This was our first week and we have had to make adjustments. We hope you will come back and visit us soon.

I don't go to Joyce & Family very often, but I've never had a bad experience in the last 7 years that I've been going. Everthing that I've tasted was really good and the yams are drop dead delicious.

I always stop at Joyce & Family Restaurant on my yearly trip from California to North Carolina. This is by far the BEST southern comfort food (greens, chicken, sweet potatoes, etc.) I have had since leaving Alabama many years ago. My family lives in the Holly Springs area and this was a welcomed spot to dine on my very first trip to North Carolina several years ago. I can't leave without at least one visit to this wonderful eatery. Thanks!!!!

OMG!! This truly does taste like good home cooking, even better than Mom's!! The fried chicken is awesome! The first time I went, there was a few minutes when the fried chicken was gone on the buffet. People were waiting around, somewhat impatiently, including me, watching the path to the kitchen. We were enjoying the other goodies on the buffet, but you can't eat here and not have your fill of fried chicken. Then joy of joys out came a big batch and the vultures (again, including me) descended! Heaven! My other favorites are the green beans and the mashed potatoes and gravy. I just can't tell you how good they are! You must try them for yourself!!

Everybody! Mrs. Joyce's food is undoubtedly some of the best-cooked-soul-food-on-the-planet!! Her staff and service is adequate, sufficient and very courteous. I am a witness Mrs. Joyce has more to offer than just good food. She displays a wonderful spirit of kindness that blazes a trail from the kitchen to the buffet and throughout the entire restaurant. It's a small family restaurant with a small buffet. You can expect the chicken as with everything else to run out from time to time. The solution is simple, with fried chicken and sides as good as Mrs. Joyce??s; I would suggest limiting yourself to not more than you can eat at one sitting. This will allow more people to be severed which will avoid having to wait longer before the next batch is ready. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone expecting a warm loving environment and a great home cooked meal.

We drove all the way from Durham to see what the hype was about. When we got there during off-peak hours, the first batch of fried chicken was on the dry side but still tasted great, but soon when the new batch came out - oh my! It was the best I've ever tasted! The skin was crispy and flavorful, the meat tender and juicy. Not greasy at all! It was the holy grail of fried chicken. Other bests were mashed potato (very rich and creamy!), yam and collard greens. We finished our meal with a slice of dark, moist chocolate cake with the richest fudge frosting! I can't wait to go back. The service was tremendous. Miss Joyce was the sweetest lady. We've even decided to have her cater our wedding!

I thought that I was at Grandma's house eating some good ole soul food. I loved the flavor of all of the food and I also enjoyed meeting Mrs. Joyce - she is so wonderful. If you are ever in the Fuquay Varina NC area and are looking for somewhere good to eat please give Joyce & Family Restaurant a visit - you will be pleased!

I understand that having a larger restaurant takes some getting used to; however, it has been a few months and the kinks are still there. We eat at Joyce's once or twice a month on Sunday. I'm not sure we will be going back. My rating is based on the food, but not the service.

Last Sunday we sat in what used to be the bar area and Jas (or Jasmine, I am not sure) was our server. Almost every table in that section needed her and could not get her so Doll ended up waiting on her tables. Our drinks were never refilled, nor was the table next to ours. It took her more than 10 minutes to let another customer know what was for dessert. Plates that she was supposed to take to table would sit on the counter for many minutes without delivery.

As for the food, it is good--if they have not run out. We had to wait for our chicken to cook. Both my husband and I ordered okra. I got a few pieces; he got none because they had run out. We asked for apples for our son, those were out as well. I wanted collards (listed on the menu), but they only had turnips (not listed on the menu). Each time we have gone, we have had to substitute something. This past week, the substitute side was never brought out to him.

My opinions to help make it better:

Hire a business manager that can track trends and order supplies accordingly and make sure the menu reflects what is being served. Also, he/she should be able to train the staff properly so that customers are not put off by the staff.

Take family style off the menu and bring back the buffet all the time. If people only order the family style, then they are getting the same thing over and over. Whereas, if they get buffet, they will get a little of this and little of that. That might fix the shortage issue. As for the buffet that is served during the week, it's a liitle steeply priced. I would bring it down to $8.99 and include the drink rather than dessert. Most people will get dessert because it's there and included. However, if you have to ask for it, you will only get it if you truly want it. Charge for the dessert rather than drink. In the end, you could come out ahead since tea is so cheap.

I think that Joyce and Family is an asset to downtown Fuquay and really want it to survive in the new location. They will have to make some changes to keep customers coming though.

Took my mom and 3 yr. old twins in for lunch today for the first time and we all found something we really liked. The service was friendly and the food on the buffet was fresh and delicious. Best fried chicken I've had in ages. We'll definitely go back.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, it's not exactly upscale: plastic plates and forks, styrofoam cups and kitschy religious decor ... but it was clean and comfortable.

The food is so wonderful, I eat there at least 2 times a week. Everyone from Terri to Daniella to Ms. Joyce is so friendly. This is hands down the best sould food in the triangle. The atmosphere is friendly and down home. Ms. Joyce is like family, so sweet!

This is my husband's favorite place to eat! Home cooked food at a good price. They have a menu, but the small buffet is it's claim to fame among locals. Things like fried chicken, pork chops, chicken and pastry, green beans and cabbage. They also have a tiny salad and dessert bar, but I always finish off my meal with their baked apples, the best I've ever tasted. Don't come here for the atmosphere. There is none. It's plain and old, a bit shabby, but clean. Kind of like eating at Grandma's. And you know, nobody can cook like Grandma!

I have lived in NC my entire life and this home cooking is absolutely delicious! It is not greasy at all. The buffet always has a wide variety of entrees, sides and desserts. I would eat here every day if I could. The staff is okay, but I can deal with that because the food is so wonderful. Ms. Joyce knows her southern food and I highly recommend you trying this wonderful restaurant! They also have a take-out system that is easy and fast. Enjoy!

Excellent food for an excellent price. Ms. Joyce food is so good that it will remind you of your Grandmothers cooking. I'm happy I was introduced to her establishment which I will continue to eat at on a regular basis. I wish her business continued success.

This restaurant has the best food. Truly home cooked food. It taste just like granma's cooking. I have not found any one that can match their fried chicken, macaroni and cheese or turnip greens. The best porkchops fried or smothered. Joyce and Family make the best sweet potato yams I have ever eaten in my life.

Very good home cooked food. Paper products are used. Seating limited. Parking is limited. Buffet is priced well. Take out is slow at times but getting better.
