while y'all condemn it as not being real mexican you ignore that it is so yummy. there is nothing a veggie deluxe burrito can't fix. i live in chapel hill so i usually go to the one on franklin but i've actually been to all three (new york) and i've wanted that tank top for a while. y'all can go somewhere else. cosmic is also great because it's cheap and open until 4am. if i'm hungry downtown the best deal is to get a cheese and salsa quesadila for $2. yea the salsa is runny but it's delicious. there's a $1 off coupon in the independent (for orders over $5) every other week or so and i always use it so my veggie deluxe (black beans, rice, cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole) is only $4.50. i think natives of durham and chapel hill are pretty loyal to cosmic. And their food is nice and fresh.

Cosmic Cantina offers cheap, huge burritos. You could split one with a friend, or, if you finish one yourself, be completely stuffed. You can alter yours to be vegetarian or vegan. They taste OK, nothing special. And if you care about authenticity, forget it. But it can be a nice, affordable place to come with friends or provide a cheap and filling meal. The restaurant is on the second floor, and the inside is kind of dark and the music kind of loud. But the outdoor seating is this enclosed balcony space that's very pleasant. It's away from the noise of cars, and there are vines climbing on the brick wall, and you can hear birds and look at the sky. It's a good place for the local high school and college students.

Cons: food is not very good, indoors not so nice

The Cosmic Cantina is a sham, a travesty, an abomination and a crime against humanity. The restaurant (does it earn that title?) should be condemned as a gesture to our neighbors to the south. I've had some terrible imitation Mexican fare in my day; this is the worst, and that's saying something.

The food here is so bad and remarkably unappetizing, I have often wondered how the place manages to stay in business, let alone retain a FIVE STAR RATING (WHAT?) on sites such as these. I then realized that its patrons have never been west of the Mississippi and couldn't discern cochinita pibil from bu?uelos.

If anything, the Cosmic Cantina could be commended for attaining previously intattainble levels of Bland. I mean it, there is not a single ingredient inside those hell-begotten doors above a "Smartee" on the flavor-scale. The Cosmic Cantina would attend a Nickelback concert if it could.

I wish this rating system allowed zero stars.

Cons: Literally everything

Most people will talk about their burritos, but please do not ignore the rest of their menu. Burritos are great, but they have so much more to offer besides their giant burritos. I personally love their tacos with black beans and chicken.
A good time to visit is in the spring, so you can sit on the outside patio/roof area. Just be wary of the steep stairs.

Cosmic Cantina, a little hole-in-the-wall above Perry St. in Durham, is one of those places you miss when you're not in town. It's in a studio-loft space on the second floor with a back deck in a quasi-urban area, and it's almost tough to find if you've never been guided there yourself, but that's part of the charm. They're actually open daily until 4 a.m., which is hard to beat. As a Duke student, I know it's worth the walk or drive from campus at any hour of the day. Personally I like the chimichianga, but it's the steak, chicken and cheese quesadillas that bring me back. Absolutely delicious, and the cheese quesadilla is only $2.06. And I've read reviews of Cosmic lamenting watery salsa; I wonder, what kind of salsa are you used to? No tomato-salsa? Keep it to yourself, and leave Cosmic for the lovers.

So I heard the Cosmic Cantina had the best Mexican food in Chapel Hill. That is far from true. The food is average and service was far from what I expected. We got there and it took a while for the hostess to greet us and seat us. Then when we got seated they never send a waitress over to take our order.

Once we finally got our meal we were disappointed in the quality of the food. Maybe this is because our expectations were higher than the restaurant warranted. I mean the meal wasn't horrible but I would not go back again. On the plus side the nacho chips were really good and they provided three different sauces for dipping. But then again the nachos weren't free and we had to pay for them as appetizers. Come on.. what Mexican restaurant charges for nacho chips.

This is a great spot to get authentic mexican food at a cheap price. When I'm low on money I take my kids here. The portions are very hefty so it's easy to share. One can easily feed a family of 5 for under $15. I also like that they offer vegetarian versions of all of their meals.

Please don't listen to the reviewer who recommends two *chain* restaurants instead of this kooky, eclectic, awesome restaurant tucked away on 9th street. I can't think of a better place to grab a steak burrito at 1:30 in the morning, when only the perfect food will suffice. If you aren't comfortable with the old historic building appeal of the interior, then get the burrito to go, trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Quick, Cheap, and downright tasty.

Cons: there's not one in raleigh.

Bland, uninteresting flavors catered to an audience unaccustomed to real Mexican food. I grew up in New Mexico and Los Angeles, so I know Mexican food and this place leaves much to be desired. Aside from that, the tables and floors were dirty and you kind of felt dirty being here. Also the bathroom was right out in the dining room. Pretty unappealing. You'll get better flavor/environment at On the Border (yes some chains are better than "holes-in-the-wall") or for something more authentic, try Torero's (on 15-501 in Durham) or El Dorado (on NC55). Also, for excellent flavor and ingredients, and my favorite Mexican food in North Carolina, try Chipotle on Franklin St in Chapel Hill. It beats the pants off this place for flavor and environment.

We went to Cosmic Cantina for the first time today. I expected it to be kind of a dump and it was, and that's not a "charming, fun" dump, just a plan, dark space, although it was late afternoon and desolate. Staff were not friendly. Burritos were OK, tortillas tasted fresh and beans were pretty good. Salsa was fresh made, but obviously long before we ate it - it was 80% exuded water (from long-ago chopped tomatoes) and nearly flavorless, maybe the worst I've ever had in a restaurant. You get one tiny cup (like a tablespoon) that the nasty chips won't fit in, unless you can convince the guy to give you a second one (after one taste, one cup was more than enough.) I took the family there to convince them that "non-chain" is better than "chain" (Moe's) and left apologizing and longing for Moe's, which I think is better and cheaper (and you can get plenty of salsa, limes, cilantro, guac, etc. without paying extra.) I really wanted to like Cosmic Cantina. I'm glad we've got a place with character where students can eat at 4 in the morning. Still, as much as it pains me to say it, I'd ten times rather go to Moe's or On the Border. Maybe I should try a taqueria.

GREAT Food-- I recommend getting it to go because the building is a dump and the restaurant is a fly trap. Flies and all, it's still worth it.

THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE CANTINA, L- BACK. NO NEED TO GET ALL DRESSED UP. CASUAL
APPLYS HERE. THE FOOD IS ALWAYS FRESH. I HAVE EATEN HERE AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES,
AND NEVER ONCE HAVE I EVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED. THE PORTIONS ARE HARDY, THE STAFF
FRIENDLY. MAKE THE CLIMB OF THE STAIR CASE, AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

I've been to the Cosmic Cantina a couple of times now, and enjoyed my veggie burritos a lot each time! They even madethem without the tortilla for me the second time, in an effort to save a few calories. The prices are good for the amount of food you get. The outside is unassuming, and the stairs up to the restaurant prevent wheelchair access.

Pros: Gread food, cool vibes when it's not too busy.

Cons: Can be really crowded, the main dining area is always 10 degreees too warm.

I absolutely love Cosmic Cantina whether it's 2pm or 3:30am. I used to take my parents and visiting friends there all the time and everyone has loved it. It does get crowded a peak hours so go for a later lunch/early dinner at like 3-4pm. Even after living in Durham 4 years I still never got tired of eating at Cosmic and I would recommend it to anyone in the Triangle area. And their food is much better than those chain fast food places like Chipotle.

cosmic has a suprisingly large mix of delicious, cheap food. the burritos are huge, the quesadeas gooey and wonderful, the nachos are loaded fabulously. my favorite are the salads- huge mixes of the grilled chicken or steak, fresh beans, cheese, slice of avocado, and diced tomato. when it comes to late night, between honeys, waffle house, and this-- there is no question where to go!
be sure to check out the outside sitting area that looms above ninth st. cosily situated, it is easy to forget where you are.

I know mexican food, lived for a year in mexico, eaten in los angeles, ny etc..., place located in the 2nd floor, slum, almost fell of the stairs (kidding), upon arrival place looks ugly, there was a long line, the cashier had a flat affect, i ordered the chicken burrito delux with a bag of chips, took about 10 minutes until they prepared it, the chips were stale, bitter flavor, the chicken was rubbery and extra salty, the rice too wet. Chipotle mexican grill has much better buritto. would not recommend!!

I'm sad to even write this, but over the past several months, I've noticed the service at Cosmic Cantina going down, down, down. There is one cashier who consistently gets my order wrong--it'd probably be better if they had sheets to fill out, like the Armadillo Grill. But even when the order is wrong, the food is good. I'm so torn. I love the food, but I feel abused when I go there... but still I go numerous times a week.

Is it a hole in the wall (at either location)? Yes. But you get the best food. (And 9th Street is perfectly safe, even at night.) I've been a Cosmic addict for the last 7 years and you cannot beat it for value, healthiness, flavour, and sheer size. 1 grande veggie burrito = 3 meals!

Up the stairs and to the right... what a wonderfully hidden oasis. The burritos are incredible and oh-so-cheap! Be sure to ask for the green sauce--inside your burrito. The green sauce melds nicely with the sour cream, guacamole, and salsa to make a taste treat that will keep you coming back. (Warning: The green sauce does have a little heat.)

After moving from any city, there is always that unique food-joint that you can't duplicate in the new locale. For me, it will be CC. (I even have it on my speed dial.) I don't compare it to true mexican food--there are plenty authentic places in Durham for that--but simple, high quality ingredients prepared fast and good. The veg burrito made appearances at least twice a week on my menu last year, although my newest favorite is the chicken quesadilla. In the summer months when fresh tomatoes abound, there is NO beating the freshly made salsa!! Great prices and none of the loose change to deal with since all prices are right on the dollar. Just don't go between 2am and 3am because it is overrun with drunk college kids.

This is a good place for a quick mexi-fix and a Pacifico in the evening. However, if you have ever enjoyed Mexican food intended for Mexicans - not soft-palated gringos - the food here is pretty dull in comparison. But they cater to a certain crowd, and for those who enjoy a little more spice they do offer a very good hot sauce at the tables. The last couple of times I was there I removed very grey piece of...um...chicken? from my burrito. As for the prices: a burrito the size of your head is $4 in California. At CC it's $9. But at least they have 'em.

A 9th Street must, cheap food and big burritos but could use some cleaning up.

Cosmic has fantastic, fresh, inexpensive Mexican food. A great "college" type atmosphere, with good lighting, music, and service. The food is delicious and they offer lots of vegetarian and vegan options.

This place is the absolute best deal around. All of the ingredients are fresh and the burritos are huge. You can easily get your fill for $4.00. Highly recommended for those mexican food cravings!

It is truly a dive. The food is great though. The burritos are all good and the salsa is very fresh. Request chips and salsa if it is for take out though, they are not an automatic. Great durham food. Summer is good for eating out on their patio.

Pros: Tasty, Cheap

Cons: Dinky Place

Good, cheap food... open late, so that you can chill when some other places are closed. Definitely a bargain for the buck!

I love the burritos at Cosmic Cantina, but I don't call $7 for a burrito and five tortilla chips served in a plastic basket cheap!!!. Granted, it's only $6 if you skip the sour cream & guac, but who wants to do that???

My idea of cheap is a burrito *with* rice & beans on the side served on a real plate by a real waiter for around $5 at ElRodeo, or a Fajita for under $3 at Armadillo Grill. Now that's Cheap!

I usually hate this kind of place and I wanted to when my wife and I went....but instead I found the food fresh and really very tasty. No overcook dry beans - or ill prepared sauces. Just simple really good mexican food.

Cosmic Cantina is as good as you can get as far as delicious, inexpensive, filling, and healthy Mexican food. As a college student, I gravitate to low-cost eateries and Cosmic Cantina offers a welcome alternative to cheap and greasy artery-clogging burger joints and pizza pubs.
I suggest the vegetarian burrito which is only $3 and a complete meal in itself. If you're looking for meat, try the chicken burrito with marinated grilled white meat chicken. Nachos and salads are a good choice as well.
Cantina is an everyday stop for me; I highly suggest it for anyone looking for a healthy, filling and inexpensive meal!

This is my all-time favorite place for burritos. The distinct combination of flavors in the $5 regular chicken version is superlative--yes, even for west coast standards. You just can't beat fresh, healthy ingredients (cilantro, lime, rice, beans, marinated chicken), authentic or not. However the tacos do leave something to be desired--don't expect to find yummy carne asada (even though it still beats El Dorado).

Tight-quarters, weathered wooden interior, rooftop-style patio--all make for the coziest of atmospheres typical of the hippest hangouts. Urban charm at its finest--right here in Durham.

Granted, you shouldn't come here expecting fabulous Mexican food. What you SHOULD expect is a nice, casual dining experience outside on the patio--when it comes to having a beer on Cosmic Cantina's deck, there simply isn't a better way to spend a summer evening.
