Although this is a pretty small set-up and is almost always packed, it's worth the wait! The BBQ here is well known to be one of the best places in NC. I had their chicken pot pie dish, which was just "okay," but they were out of what I originally wanted. The hush puppies are amazing and everyone I was with absolutely loved the pork. My husband would eat here every day if he could!
I love good and I mean good Carolina BBQ, you know the type - pulled or chopped pork slowly cooked and then loaded up with a vinegar and red pepper seasoning. Ole Time BBQ is like that. If you in this area I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. Oh and what's nice, they also ship "free" anywhere in the continental US. This is worth taking a trip over to Hillsborough St when your in Raleigh, you won't regret it - promise!
This place, put simply, is as good at it gets if you are looking for Carolina-style barbecue in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. Almost as good are the other offerings; chicken, steak, collards, black-eye peas, what have you. But, do yourself a favor and just order the barbecue - it's called Ole Time *Barbecue* for a reason!
The only warning I can put forth is that those who are on a diet (or, heaven forbid, vegetarian) will find little to eat here.
PROS: Delicious food. Great service. Free hushpuppies.
CONS: Maybe a little small. Closes early on Saturday and all day on Sunday.
This company catered a company picnic and we found the food to be very good. There was a wide variety Carolina-style foods and it was set up nicely. The food was hot and fresh and the people were very helpful as we came through the line to get our meal. They had ample portions for everyone and we would use them again if the opportunity arose.
PROS: Great food, very nice people
I eat at the location in Garner today for the first time for lunch and it was wonderful. Such very nice folks that work there. The food was very very good and not expensive at all. Mr. Jerry the owner come by to speak and see how things were going, such a nice gentleman. Some of the best barbecue Ive ever put in my mouth and the best hushpuppies Ive eaten anywhere!
Pros: Great Family Atmosphere and Food
Our family of four visited Ole Time in Garner saturday night about 7pm. we walked into 70 girl soccer players and parents. My wife said "we need to go somewhere else tonight, they are too crowded" as soon as she said that the owner Jerry Hart came over to us and said "no problem I'll get you served quickly" and he did. We have NEVER been anywhere that the service and food was to compair to this. Haley one of Jerry's wait staff came over got our beverage orders and brought a basket of hot melt in your mouth hushpuppies and a giant box of crayons and paper for the kids. We were pleased they have a very inexpense kids menu like $3.95 drink included. Now for the fun part our food arrived in less than 10 min. hot fresh and I could swear my mom was in the kitchen. during our meal Jerry and Haley came to check on us, I haven't seen my kids eat so much in a while. Now is the hard part, Jerry came over with a tray of about 6 homemade desserts. I can't tell you about the desserts we were full of bbq, fried chicken, green beans and the best apple sticks I have ever had. I'll tell you if you don't give them a try you are just plan foolish. Good luck and we will see you soon.
Pros: great food and service and 100% health grade
Cons: not opened on sundays
Ole Time BBQ knows how to flavor a pig, by not masking the taste with heavy sauces. Simply put, pork tastes good and only needs the right tender care to bring out the best flavor. These guys know how to bring out the flavor by slow cooking, light seasoning and and providing a unique dining experience every time you visit.
The hot sauce is a family recipe that is like no other I've ever tasted and brings the right amount of heat, which is great cause then you get to chug the delicious sweet tea right after those heaping bites of goodness.
Pros: Best Hot Sauce I've ever Had...period
Cons: Jerry the owner, will make you laugh till you cry
Our family has many good restaurants to choose from in the Triangle area. Finding a place to eat that has good homestyle cooked meals are few and far between. OTB has been a place for us to relax while enjoying the food and company. Some of our favorite meals have been the chicken pastry, hamburgers, meatloaf, BBQ chicken and of course BBQ pork. Our youngest son loves the plate sized pancakes and sausage! The service is consistently quick and friendly. Jerry always has a joke or two to make you laugh! So stop by, order up, relax and enjoy some good ole BBQ.
Pros: fast service, good food, and happy people
Cons: "...and He rested on the seventh day..." Genesis 2:2
What has happened to this place?? After reading the rave reviews, we ventured the 34 mile drive looking forward to a great quaint BBQ joint at the Hillsborough Road spot. We tried to get there early fearing a Sat. evening big crowd at supper and when we arrived at 4:30 we knew we had beat the crowds. Since we were the only ones seated, service was immediate with a snack basket of hush puppies to munch on while the food was being prepared. Opps, did I say munch? The hush puppies were clearly ones left over from an earlier batch that were nuked for 10-15 seconds and brought out to us. They were barely warm, tough, and chewy....not hot, crisp and steamy when you bite into them. Great BBQ joints always serve up crisp, hot, melt in your mouth hush puppies but these were horrible. About two minutes later the food came out. While the portions are generous, the Que as well was barely warm. No sound from the kitchen at all of any Que being chopped fresh at anytime. Luke warm Que tends to be greasy and lump together since the fats aren't hot enuff to be solvent to make the meat flavorful and moist. My wife and I just looked at each other feeling sorry for this place and the potential that it is missing. It is a small typical old timey Que joint that if some attention to serving up hot fresh food were given could be the place of my dreams. My wife thought the BBQ beans to be very good and I liked the slaw and the iced tea was great. But in the world of memorable Que, luke warm chewy hush puppies and lumpy luke warm BBQ is an insult to anyone making the effort to make a special trip to this place. Don't waste your time. Maybe though try lunch when they are busy and fix fresh hush puppies and chop fresh Que for the crowd....if they have crowds. So sad, it really is.
Pros: Very Fast Service, Great Iced Tea
Cons: Food Mildly Warm, No One Asked If It Was OK
This is good stuff!! Try the BBQ or ribs ... and the hush puppies are very light. I've had breakfast (great value), lunch (great taste), and dinner (friendly atmosphere) ... any time of day it's good home cooked food.
Pros: BBQ & made to feel like one of the family
Cons: seating capacity
Went their for a 5:00 dinner last Thursday. BBQ sandwich was cooler than room temp. Fries were cool to the touch. Had to have been sitting out for over an hour to get that cold. Not busy at all, employees just didn't care apparently. I heard it wasn't as good as it used to be. I hope my experience was an exception. Don't want to lose a local place like this.
Pros: Hole in the Wall
Cons: Cold Food
My wife and I went to Ole Time this past Saturday night for some authentic Carolina barbecue and man did we leave happy (and full)! We don't get down south often enough and wanted to be sure to find authentic Carolina barbecue on this trip. We read about Ole TIme but none of the reviews did this place justice. From the minute you walk in you know you're in for some good barbecue. The waitress was real nice and helped my wife order but I knew exactly what I wanted....ribs! Neither one of us was disappointed! From the hush puppies they put on the table when you arrive to the perfecty barbecued ribs and amazing sweet potato sticks everything was excellent. Don't forget the barbecue sauce! We even picked up a few of the "Red Neck Chopsticks" on our way out. The place was great, the food was outstanding and the staff is friendly and always willing to tell a story or two about the place. If you want authentic Carolina barbecue don't walk.....RUN......to Ole Time!
Pros: Food, Ambience and Friendly Service
Cons: Was too full to eat anymore
After reading the reviews on citysearch, my friend and I thought we were in store for some awesome barbecue!! When we got there and looked at the place, it had that "hole in the wall" barbecue restaurant feel that only the best barbecue restaurants have. I started to salivate, and I thought for sure we were in for a comfort food extravaganza! The waitress that served us acted as if she didn't even want us there. As if we had walked into a party that we weren't invited to. Then I asked her which entree had the most barbecue and she told me she couldn't tell me. I went with the barbecue plate, and she never even told me that it comes in a large or a small!!! I was starving, and she brought me the small barbecue plate. So the service was horrible... however... I thought... well.... at least, maybe, the food will be good... right? wrong! The barbecue was dry! And the pork had hard edges, and it looked and tasted like it had came from meat that either wasn't that fresh, or wasn't from a good pig... if that makes any sense. It just wasn't that great. And the portion size was pathetic! Also, the sweet tea was watered down. A good glass of sweet tea is essential to barbecue, or any southern food. I don't like to write bad reviews for any business, because I know how hard it is to run a good business... but.... the prices were so high, and the service was so crappy... that I feel cheated.
Pros: the inside of the restaurant is decorated really cool
Cons: The waitress that works there wears a "dirty d*cks" shirt... why doesn't she wear an ole time barbecue shirt?
Ole Time is such a ROCKIN place!!!! I Love the fresh Veggie Plates and Hushpuppies - yum, yum! They are friendly people and I would recommend them to anyone :)
Pros: Has Vegetarian Options
I've lived in Raleigh area for several years now and love brisket when it is cooked right. Most of the BBQ restaurants in the area do not offer it or they overcook it. At Hawgwild, it is so tender and juicy that it melts in your mouth. The only problem I have is that I can't make myself stop eating it! I have eaten at Hawgwild over ten times since they've opened and, obviously, love their brisket, but I have yet to find anything on the menu that I don't like. Also, if you are a smoked chicken fan their's is the best I've had, period.
Their tagline is 'Come see what we're smokin'... I'm not sure what they're smokin' but it is some good stuff!!!
Pros: Best BBQ, Service, Cool atmosphere
Cons: So good that you may over eat
There is something special about this place. It just plain gives you the sense that life is good. The people are so friendly and welcoming, it's like visiting family. They go out of their way to please everybody, which is not hard when every menu item is indescribably delicious. If you have been there before, you are probably there now. If you have not been there before, finish reading this and go now. Trust me, y'all be back.
Pros: Great food and service
I live in western NC where the BBQ sauce is tomato based. I like it but I will always go out of my way to stop and enjoy Ole Time BBQ when I am in Raleigh area. It is the best pork BBQ I have ever eaten. It is not a large place so stop by when crowds are less but Its worth the wait otherwise.
Pros: Best BBQ in state
Cons: small restaurant
I HAVE KNOWN THE OWNER JERRY HART FOR YEARS. HE IS A VERY CARING AND LOVING PERSON. WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY JERRY IS FIRST IN LINE. YES ONE OF HIS TRADITIONS IS JOKINGLY THROWING PEOPLE OUT THAT TIE UP A TABLE TOO LONG, BUT I THINK IT IS GREAT ESPECIALLY IF I AM THE ONE WAITING FOR THE TABLE. OLE TIME IS A LITE AND FUN ATMOSPHERE AND THE BEST FOOD AROUND!
Pros: GOOD FOOD AND FUN
Cons: PARKING A LITTLE TIGHT
Made my first trip with a friend, and our food arrived almost instantly. After about twenty minutes -- I was still nibbling on hush puppies and drinking iced tea -- I was stunned to hear the proprietor telling someone that he was "throwing these guys out." The place is small, and he needed the table, although we were not aware that anyone was waiting and are not the sort to tarry in such circumstances. I will never darken his door again. BBQ was not great anyway.
Pros: Good wait service
Cons: Rude, rude management (he seems to think it is cute -- "a tradition," he said)
Ole Time has great lunch and dinner food but the breakfast is to die for. The only place in town I can get my eggs cooked like I want them, and the best cup of joe arround. Charlotte is very friendly and great service with a smile.
Pros: great breakfast also
I just left Ole Time and headed back to my office, I couldn't wait to write this reveiw. It is my first time at Ole Time and I had a ball. The bbq and fixings were great. But the service is bar none the very best ever. The owner Jerry Hart had me in stiches with his jokes and manorisms. He rah I have found a new home
Pros: BAR NONE THE BEST
Cons: THEY HAVE A SMOKING AREA "YUCK"
I CANNOT BELEIVE SOMEONE VISITED A NORTH CAROLINA BBQ RESTURANT AND EXPECTED A VEGETARIAN MENU. COME ON HOW NARROW ARE YOU? OF COURSE THEY SEASON THEIR FOOD WITH MEAT, MRS DASH AIN'T COUNTRY COOKING.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN ANYWHERE IN THIS STATE AND HAD BETTER FOOD OR SERVICE THAN OLE TIME BBQ. MY SUGGESTION IS TO NOT CHANGE A THING. IT IS SO NICE IN THIS FAST FOOD WORLD WE LIVE IN TO HAVE SOME GREAT FOOD AND PERSONAL SERVICE.
I would not recommend this restaurant to any vegetarians. They informed me their vegetables are cooked in BACON FAT and they did not refund my money when I found out. This could make someone very sick. It should be posted and reiterated to the vegetarian customers. This could be dangerous to people with allergies, etc. God Bless you and inquire about your food at restaurants before you eat it. :)
The BBQ pork is good but everything else on the menu is poor at best. Get a sandwich and some hushpuppies, and you'll be satisfied. Service was excellent and friendly.
Pros: Good pork BBQ sandwich and hushpuppies
Cons: but that is it
This is average food, nothing more. Not real good Eastern Bar B Que, Goldsboro and Wilson are not really that far away and you get that real NC Bar B Que fix.
Sides/ Same, average.
Small crowded and noisy, but it is a far value for the money. Just get a sandwiche with slaw.
Pros: Slaw, Friendly
This old fashioned barbecue resturaunt offers great good with a great atmosphere. Although small, the southern hospitality makes you feel good to go along with the excellent food. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Pros: Great Food, Southern Hospitality, Low Prices
Cons: Small, Bad Parking
If there is a reason to cook BBQ with electricity, it is a constant low temperature to leave the meat moist and tender. Olde Time BBQ gets extra points for this. The texture of the meat is very good. The BBQ or combo plates are a value. The sauces on the table are among the bets vinagar-peper sauces around - sweet, spicy, or extra spicy. Overall, this is a good value and worth a drive to that part of the county.
Pros: bbq, sauces, chicken
Cons: no hickory, small
The experience at Ole Time is like no other. The food is delicious with a large helping at a great price! The owner is always there to ask how your meal was. The friendly employees just top the whole experience off! Highly recommended!
Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious, Friendly staff
Cons: Can be crowded
I was really craving some good Eastern NC BBQ but this was not it. THe BBQ was super-greasy and good BBQ doesn't have to be that way. I like the vinegar taste, but this BBQ wasn't tasty at all. The choice of sides is good--better than most places + the take-out option is convienent, but only if you care for the food. That was my 1st + last time at Ole Time.
The barbeque is great, but the sauce is what makes this place one of the best. Be sure to add either the hot or mild sauce for Ole Time's real flavor! This place has been a favorite of mine for 6 years, ever since it was reccommended by a friend in college. Don't let the hole-in-the-wall appearance scare you away (it can be a little intimidating the first time for city-folk like myself).
I used to live right down the street from Ole Time BBQ in Raleigh and I am kind of amazed at the reviews that say it's the best in NC! The bbq is average at best. Chicken is pretty damn good though. The staff is what makes this place. The owner is very friendly and i've had many a conversation with him. I went there just to interact and feel like I was at home. If you took away the great atmoshpere and most friendly staff, the food wouldn't hold up this place. Definitely NOT the best BBQ in the state, much less the country. Hell, I grew up on eastern style bbq and Ole Time BBQ just doesn't cut it.
Pros: great staff, good location, inexpensive
Cons: bbq not that great, little parking, too small
I see lots of high ratings and comments about "real-BBQ" and "top-ten" in NC and I'm telling you, it just can't be. I always love the "shacky" vibe but the food still quite ain't there. Chicken pastry:(used to be good)now has befallen a fate not worthy of mention.. What Happened?
Porky Pig? Still a faint portrait of "real" BBQ but better. The Brunswick Stew-tasteless and merely an afterthought. Collards: Enough juice to fill goshen swamp...drain them, season them...show them some love! Fried Okra.....criminal offense to serve it cold & mushy..or under-cooked. Overall, atmosphere and service were great as usual. BBQ has actually crept up a (although those reviewers who rate this "real good" have me wondering if they've ever ventured east of Grantham NC). Will do in a pinch when you can't get the real thing.
Pros: Pig is gettin' better, Service always good, Atmosphere Great
Cons: Pig still average, close early
Not really! Quite filling Due to the generous portions. Be sure to try the corn sticks, they're great! Traditional east-coast North Carolina barbeque with all the extras....Brunswick stew, hush-puppies, boiled potatoes, cole slaw, and the daily vegetables from which to choose. An excellent choice when feeding a large group, and take-out is always hot! No thick, sweet, tomato-y sauce, just vinegar-based seasoning on chopped pork....excellent!
Pros: Great value, Great food, Great service
Cons: No atmosphere
I am from eastern North Carolina (the ONLY part of the country that REALLY knows BBQ) and I love this place! It has the incredible BBQ and hushpuppies, a great staff and the loyal patrons that all truly great BBQ places must have to be considered one of the best!
Pros: great value, great service, great food
This is almost a roadside shack, and if you know anything about BBQ, you know that is a good thing. Jerry, the owner, will treat you like family and the hushpuppies are the stuff of dreams. Usually a line for lunch...
I know the owner personally...very good resteraunt differnt atmosphere, nice people
Great food, friendly staff, fun atmosphere!! A great lunch spot!
the barbeque is the best in n.c.
Jerry, the owner, is quite a character.
Pros: food, sevice
Cons: crowded, lack of parking, very small place
great service. good price. best bar-b-que in Raleigh. No waiting for someone to take your order.
Simply the best barbeque in Raleigh. Coopers and Don Murray's pale in comparison. Better pig, hushpuppies, sides, and banana pudding. Unbelievably fast, friendly service that can only be brightened by a Jerry Hart joke or hug. Gotta watch out for that last one!
There is no other place around that can beat the BBQ at Ole Time and i will put money agianst that.... You must try this for yourself it is THE BEST. To the people at Ole Time BBQ keep up the great work !!!!
On point that is! I've been eating there since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and the eatin' just gets "gooder and gooder"! I'm "hog-wild" on the new yellow awning too!
I remember the first time I went to Ole Time, and it was wonderful. The tea is always good, the barbecue is always fresh, and the people couldn't be more friendly. When I eat there, it feels like somebody's kitchen. And when Mr. Hart's there, things are always lively. I hope to be able to come back forever.
Pros: Across from tracks, Good food, Great people
Ole Time Barbecue has the best pig in town...not to mention the sides--yummy! The employees are always fun and friendly too.
Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly People, Close to Home
Cons: Small Dining Area, Crowded, Limited Parking
enjoyed everything about it great sauce would recomend to friends
not only is it currently the best barbecue restaurant anywyere, but has been for a long time. The owners, Kathy and Jerry Hart are hands-on, on site and their dedication to their establishment is easily measured by the consistency of the repeat customers from all aspects of the Research Triangle area. Good job, Kathy and Jerry.
