Before you go to this place, read the RECENT reviews. It's hard to figure out how a restaurant can screw everything up this badly. Makes you wonder if the entire staff is shooting up together in the kitchen. The Thai food is simply horrible. Although the Sushi was edible, it was not great, and many others have complained about the quality of the fish, and noted the conditions it was kept in when they got a 77.5 sanitation grade.

Waiters are just clueless, they would have to try to be worse. The "buy one get one free" sushi deal is a tricky con unless you only order rolls, but they don't explain that to you before the bill comes. For example, if you order 4 expensive rolls and 4 cheap pieces of sushi, they take off the four cheap pieces as "free" and charge you full price for the four rolls.

Overall, it just sucks, one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Avoid it at all costs.

I've been going to Sushi Thai for a few years for their $1 sushi and spicy basil. I went a few days ago and found out that they had totally changed their sushi menu and prices, no more dollar sushi or 2 dollar rolls. At first I was really upset, but then our waitress recommended we stick mostly to the bigger rolls since it's buy on get one free---and it was awesome!. We only got 6 rolls, but there was soo much food i had to take some home--and my friend and I only paid $15 each. The sushi there was always tasty, but now it's even better, especially the salmon. I miss the tempura by the piece, but all the new specialty rolls totally made up for it.

I have been going to Sushi Thai for the past 2 and a half years and i have always loved the place. I would always go at night when they had $1 sushi! You couldn't beat it! I would go there a couple of times a month. Well I moved but I finally had a chance to order it again and when I called in I was shocked to find out their new prices. I was informed they no longer have $1 sushi and that it is $6 for 2 pieces. He was happy to inform me that they now take 10% off, so instead of paying $6 I would now pay $5.40. I realize that sushi is not usually a cheap meal, but going from $1 a piece to $3 a piece is horrible. I can safely say I will be looking for a new place to purchase my sushi. If anyone has any suggestions of a new place please let me know!

Pros: good sushi

Cons: WAY TO HIGH PRICES!!

I used to go here regularly because they had really good steak and great sushi with a price you couldn't beat. $2 for 6 roles was fantastic. Now they have waiters who have no idea what they are doing or talking about. It is also now buy one get one free. What they don't tell you is it's buy one get one free per TABLE not per PERSON! Was made to believe it was per person and when My friend and I confronted the manager about my outrageous bill($66 for 2 people) she got an attitude with us! Like we were supposed to know how this works. We were not the only people confused either. I looked around and everyone I saw getting sushi had a wtf are you talking about look on their faces and asking the waiter to explain. I am very disappointed it turned into this uptight, over priced screw you over any way we can restaurant. I will never go back!

My husband and I tried to go to Sushi Thai last night, against our better judgment. This place has always been sub-par, compared to Thai restaurants in DC, but proximity to our house was always a plus. Last night, we walked in at 6:30, in hopes of getting something better than Subway or Chubby's. The restaurant was only half full. We thought, "Great, we'll get in and out pretty quickly!".... but we were put on a waiting list! I asked why there was a wait when there were so many empty tables, and she said, "They are all four-person tables, and there are only two of you.". I was flabbergasted! I gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking that she would quickly realize how poor she was at probabilities, but we ultimately left and went to Chubby's (as did the other two-person party waiting for a table).
What is WRONG with these people? I am sure the owners are completely unaware that they lost four customers that they could have seated, if they had not been holding out for more people for the four-top tables. As we walked past the restaurant after our Mexican meal, it was slightly more full, but there were plenty of empty four tops, waiting for customers. Sushi Thai, you stink.

I took one of my friends from out of town to sushi, initially I wanted to take him to Waraji but they are closed so against my better judgment I took him to Sushi Thai on Wycliff Rd. One, when we walked in no one greeted us not even a smile. Secondly, the waitress didn't speak English very well and when I went to order some sashimi she didn't tell me it was 3 dollars/piece (a la cart said $2 sushi), if I had known I wouldn't have ordered such pricey sushi so lastly I wanted to talked to the manager and she had an even worse time speaking English and she basically says that I was lying and I knew that sashimi cost 3 dollars/piece b/c "our menu hasn't changed in the past 3 years" !! Huh?? I'm supposed to remember how much everything cost since 3 years ago...there's a reason why I haven't been back in 3 years NOW I remember...the people there SUCKKKK!

I eat sushi every week and I pretty much always go here. Food is definitely good (sushi or thai). Can't beat the price. About half the time I do take out. The wait staff experience is hit or miss here. About 1 in about 5 times you'll get slow or poor service. Don't know why it's inconsistent but it is.

A great place for either take out or eat in. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant, especially the carved wooden tables and the boat-shaped bar. The sushi is good and inexpensive. The wait staff is okay, and I've never had a bad experience there. The Japanese and Thai food is good as well, although I hear the pad Thai is only okay. I recommend this place to my friends.

We went to Sushi-Thai this past Saturday night. First, what sushi restaurant runs out of miso soup? I mean, the two go hand in hand; sushi and miso soup! The waiter forgot to bring small dishes for the wasabi/soy sauce so we had to wait until we could flag down another waiter. Then to top it off, our waiter never checked back to see if we needed another beer. Don't waste your money.

My boyfriend and I had our first dinner here together four years ago. The service is great, the sushi fresh, and best of all, sashimi pieces are $1 and small rolls are $2 (dinner prices.) The lunch prices are more expensive. If you go, sit at the bar! It's quite comfortable.

Sushi Thai used to be my favorite neighborhood place to eat. The food has gone downhill badly, as well as the customer service. The 89 rating is scary especially in a sushi restaurant!

Our situation we ordered $70. in take outs, based on it was a great place to eat about a year ago. I even tipped the young lady on a take out which I never do normally. I have to admit, she was cute!
Problem: When we got home with our food, we were missing a child's dinner. When I went back there after dinner to point it out and get a refund, I was called a liar basically. She was smiling nicely and nodding yes the whole time, mean while while she was looking at me like I had a better chance of selling water at Niagara Falls. She said they remembered "putting it in the bag". Go figure, this was a hour and a half later when I went back. Our biggest surprise was when we realized what had happened and when we had to split up our dinners so we could all eat. I asked her if it was worth losing a customer over a $8.00 child's dinner, and she "there was nothing she could do". You've got to be kidding me!! How about a refund?? Who's the manager anyway? It seems the owners would wake up and fire this guy if they want to stay open!

Long story short, the food taste like it came frozen from Sam's club. It has gone downhill in the past year badly. The tempura shrimp use to melt in your mouth. It now tastes like it's been in a freezer for a year (unwrapped) and then reheated in a microwave. The management made a poor decision on this situation, enough for me to come home and write this review. We'll never go back folks.

PS: What ever happen to customer comes first? Sorry...that was in America I guess. I advise to stay away!

We've eaten here before but a long time ago and it was good, however the last time I went to order take out and the service was horrible horrible!! And you ask how is that possible for take out? I ordered at 7:30 pm, and they told me 20-30 minutes, I got there at 8:00pm they repeated my order took my payment and then said that it would still be another 15 minutes. When I went back up at 8:10 after 3 other people picked up their take out orders and asked about the status of my order, they asked what I had I said "sushi" the hostess said it takes 20 minutes and then said if want quick sushi I can go to Food Lion next door. When I said I'd called in the order and showed her the receipt of my payment she spoke with someone in Japanese for 10 minutes and apologized then said it should be out soon. I said it's been 45 minutes since I called and they said okay they'd go see and then came back to say a few more minutes. 10 minutes later the food was ready (after I said I no longer wanted it) and when I got the order home less than 5 minutes away) our appetizer (Chicken Satay) was cold and they missed one order of our sushi. I was so disappointed by their lack of customer service and I'm pretty sure they forgot to put my order in until I got there. Next time I'll drive further and go to Thai Sushi in Cary. Food & Service are much better there.

Perhaps they have changed management or just gotten lazy...but Sushi Thai used to be one of my favorite places to go. We used to always have large parties of 8 or more go there around 9pm on Wednesday nights. However, my last experience was a nightmare.

My friend from France had invited his family to come visit him. We tried Sushi Thai for dinner. We showed up at 9:15pm. They close as 10:00pm, however after we were seated and trying to explain the menu to his parents that did not speak any English, the waiter comes over and tells us the kitchen is closing soon and we need to order. The entire staff at the sushi bar was staring at us as we tried to decide what we wanted to order. After we placed our order, the waiter immediately came back with our check and said "we are closing the register, can you pay now?" We refused and he just walked away. He did not come back to the table anymore. They had other people bring out our food, they turned off all of the lights not in our section, turned off the music, and began vacuuming!! This was at 9:45pm when they were not even closed! We were absolutely appalled. We refused to pay the "included" gratuity or to give any extra and they tried to argue with us that it was necessary. I saw nowhere posted that a party of 5 people should have to pay an included tip.

I will never be going back. I am appalled, that is the worst dining experience I have ever had and I was so embarrassed to have had guests come along!

Pros: They have good, cheap sushi

Cons: HORRIBLE service and bad sanitation grade!

.

Man, oh man... I used to love me some Sushi Thai... I mean, the food was decent, and on dollar sushi night, it was cheap as can be. They have these really cool intricately carved tables, and the ambience is always decent, even if the waitstaff seems a bit frazzled and over-worked. I am really sad to see that they have gotten HORRIBLE sanitation grades lately (an 82 on Halloween, and an 88 two weeks prior). As much as I like a restaurant, I won't eat there if it's gross. They had insects, both living and dead, and raw fish touching sprouts, carrots, and sauces that were supposedly "ready to eat." If they can get their act together and score above a "95" I will go back. Until, I will be staying far, far away. :(

I love Thai food. I grew up with Thai food. I've even been to Thailand to enjoy the food and culture.
Sushi has long been a favorite among my friends who live and or work in the area near 40 and Lake Boone. I have had enjoyable experiences at this restuarant, but it has been sketchy with service and food quality. There are typically 2 wait staff at lunch time. Here's a tip, if you do decide to try it, find the waiter with his hair back in a ponytail. Good luck to you if you get anyone else. I haven't gotten his name, but he's at least responsive to the table. Unfortuanetly, the last three experiences for me have all been bad based on food quality alone. It's far from authentic Thai. Today was my last visit to this location. Not only was the food mediocre at best, the service was terrible (we should have insisted on ponytail guy). Our waiter was buzzing around doing his best to avoid questions, he did bring one of three salads which were ordered. When we tried to explain that we'd like to order another salad, he awkwardly barked "it not come with, -extra" and rushed away without listening to our friend try to confirm that she did still want a salad, he decided for her. The food was very weak today and they even over charged us on an entree and refused to correct it, because "the manager isn't here today" and they "just work here". I've never seen worse customer service..and I've been to Europe. As my friend tried to explain the overcharge situation to the blank faced cashier, I couldn't help but notice the 87 Health Inspector score on the wall. This also helps to explain the reduction in numbers at lunch. The lunch crowd has thinned out dramatically over the past couple months. All of these things and the menu changes, like taking the spring rolls out of the Lunch Time special are why I won't return to this restaurant. I'll stick to Swasdee from now on.

Original Review September 2007: I noticed there were a lot of mixed reviews, so figured I would give my very blunt angle of Sushi Thai on Wycliff Rd. Sometimes I just REALLY need sushi. I have that sushi craving/hunger pang, and I just have to have it! Sushi Thai hits the spot and you won't go broke eating your fair share of sushi. $1 nigiri, $2 rolls, $2 appetizers. The quality isn't as good as Waraji or Shaba Shabu, but for the price, the quality is pretty darned good! If I made ghastly amounts of money, I'd go to Waraji for sushi every time. But for the moderate income folk, sushi thai is fine and dandy! The Chicken Pad Thai extra hot...YUM! UPDATE: December 17th, 2007: their rating has gone down, way down all the way to 80 and back up to 91. We had a quick bite of sushi the other night. It wasn't very fresh or very good. Today I ordered my usual Pad Thai extra hot for lunch. They used excessive amounts of fish oil, so it tasted fishy. There was no lime on top to get that citrus kick into the flavors, and I didn't get any chopsticks, so had to come back to work and eat with a plastic fork. Sushi Thai used to be alright, but it's gone downhill and continues to go further down each time I go. It's just not fresh. The Harris Teether servings are tastier and about the same price. Save your money and time. UPDATE: October 21st, 2008: We decided to give Sushi Thai another chance, as their health rating had gone back up. The sushi was fresh. The service was back up to par. The restaurant was PACKED! I think they just had a bad run for a while there, but they seem to have gotten their stuff back together. Defintiely give them a try again!

Pros: Great prices, friendly staff, hits the sushi spot

Cons: Not the freshest sushi, but definitely the cheapest!

Let me try to start with the better things about this restaurant. The decor is nice--scaled down from its Cary sister-establishment but still traditional-Asian style. The prettiest thing was the tables which are all carved wood with glass over the top. Absolutely beautiful. That's all that is good about this place. There are no booths, only tables and the chairs are pretty hard. I went there for lunch and the food was, hands-down, the worst sushi I have ever eaten. We ordered 4 rolls--crunch, dragon, Neptune, and spider. The first three were so-so--not really awful but not enough to go there again. The spider roll was terrible. I have been eating sushi for a long time and have never put something in my mouth that turned my stomach and made me want to be ill. For one thing, the texture was all wrong--mushy, maybe not even fried--nothing like the tempura flakiness that soft-shelled crab should be. Even that could be forgivable, though. However, the taste of the crab was like that of a sea-creature washed ashore and lying in the sun for a few days. Sicky-sweet, a taste that lingered, pervading your nostrils and staying, despite being chased with ginger and coke. We did NOT finish this roll for fear of food sick-ness. The sanitation grade is currently 96.5 but just a little while ago it was 77.5 with many citations, including one for having fish that was not labeled as being parasite-free sushi-grade. Of course, we didn't know this prior to going to the restaurant. The waiter was somewhat attentive but disappeared at the end of the meal and never came back to get the payment. We paid at the front and left. I would NOT recommend this place for anyone. However, the Cary location is night and day different from this one and is HIGHLY recommended!!

We reserved ahead and stated it was a surprise birthday party. We went early---5:30. 1. We were greeted by being told we would have to pay $5.00 for bringing our own cake. In fact the staff had a fit over our cake because one party member made it and it looked exactly like a sushi table with sushi, chop sticks, ginger, wasabi, etc.
2. We were told to hurry up and order our entrees while we were trying to order drinks and appetizers. They wanted our menus ASAP also. 3. We were told to hurry up and leave because people were waiting for tables.

I consider this rude and poor business practice. We would have made it well worth their while financially if they had not hurried us and pushed us out. A little attention to our needs and we would have spent more than $500.00 for 12 people. The food was not worth the 70 mile drive.

I eat here all the time. The tuna and avocado salad is absolutely amazing. The Ika Sansai is the best in town. The staff is great and you cannot beat the prices. You will not be disappointed.

I went to sushi-thai b/c some friends of ours love the place. My wife and I love sushi and thought we'd give their $2 rolls a try. We get there and we're sat promptly but our waiter was the WORST. No exaggeration. It was 15 minutes before he ever took our drink order and then another 15 minutes before we saw our drinks. We had our orders ready. Fairly easy orders. We all ordered Miso soup and about $60 worth of sushi. 20 minutes later we still don't have our soup or refills. The waiter gives another table our order and take another 15 minutes to finally believe them that it's not their order. 30 minutes later everyone around us had their food except for us, oh and we still don't have refills. By this point our cold soup has been served and it was horrible. I asked the waiter how much longer he thought it might be before we received our order. He had no clue and stumbled his answer. Then someone else's order is brought to our table. It's well over an hour since we had received our drinks, still no refills and they brought us the wrong food. I calmly explained to the waiter that the order was incorrect and he argued that it wasn't. Finally, he realized his mistake and went back up to the sushi bar to place our order at the back of the line for a now packed restaurant. Never received an apology from him just a really quick disappearing act. 1 and half hours later I'd had enough! I spoke with the manager and explained to her how bad everything had been and that I wasn't interested in paying for the drinks or the soup. She apologized and let our $8 bill "slide" but then we heard a handful of excuses as to why we were the only ones with no food. Definitely one of the worst experiences that I've ever had at a restaurant. I don't advise anyone going there. You're better off with Sushi Blues or Sushi Tsune.

I'm not a sushi eater so I can't comment on the sushi here, but I can say the Thai is the best I've tried in the area so far. I learned to appreciate Thai when I lived in NYC, and was very grateful to find this restaurant that served Thai that was on par with what we could get in NY. I love their Masaman curry, it has that great earthy flavor and balance of heat offset by the creaminess of the coconut milk. I was highly disappointed to find out that earlier this year they got a very poor health inspection which I was able to view on the Dept of Health's website. It really put me off this restaurant and made me sick to think I had been eating at a place that had an insect problem. A few months later I noticed their rating had improved drastically, no mention of critters this time, so I worked up the courage to try it again. The curry was still excellent. I hope that the management will pay close attention to their sanitation this time and keep this place going strong.

Pros: great Thai, great curry dishes, you can specify a heat level

Cons: not a large place so it can get noisy when crowded, recent sanitation rating

Sushi here is always ridiculosly sweet to me. The tempura is so-so. Not light and delicious..but kind of, well. Sweet. I find everything here overly so. Too much eel sauce, and the dynamite roll was not what I was expecting. Lovely atmosphere though and nice enough wait staff. You probably don't have to bother ordering desert because everything tastes like it anyway.

I am a sushi fanatic and I know when fish is bad. I ordered ama ebi (sweet shrimp) and I proceeded to eat the fried head. Then I ate the salmon and toro and they were ok. I also ordered two spicy tuna hand rolls and the second I brought it up to my face, it smelled of dead fish. If you've ever been to a fish market, you know the kind of slimy smell I am talking about it. Then I noticed the other half of my ama ebi, the raw tail, and it was YELLOW. I did not complain to the waiter because he was quite nonchalant the whole time and I had already eaten more than half of my meal. I left a note on the table saying that their sushi was repulsive. Sushi Thai is lucky I didn't get food pois0ning! How else do they afford $1 sushi? In other words, you literally get what you pay for...BEWARE!

I love sushi thai! They have great sushi and their $1-$2 dinner specials can't be beat. My favorites are the eel roll and the DF bagel roll. Also has a good atmosphere and it isn't too crowded on most nights.

This Sushi Thai, in my opinion, is better than that of its counterpart in Cary. The Sushi Thai in Raleigh off Lake Boone Trail has the 1 dollar sushi deal every night at dinner. All sushi pieces are a dollar each. And their rolls are 2 dollars each. The place is usually crowded at dinner, but seats are open often. They provide friendly customer service and will gladly answer any questions about what each sushi item is.

I have been to Sushi Thai a number of times and I would have to say it is some of the best sushi I have ever had. They have a special dinner sushi menu with a lot less than 1 a roll.

The atmosphere is excellant and I love the tables and chairs you sit at. They also offer an extensive menu in Thai cusine that is a little more expensive but also good.

It is worth checking out.

I went there for $1 sushi specials, and it was very bad. The rice tasted very weird, and the fish was thinly sliced. It was the worst sushi I had in my life, and I cannot believe that they can call it sushi. The ambience and the service were great. We did not order any Thai food, but it seemed that they specialized in Thai food, and I would give it a try. However, this is definitely not a place to get sushi.

I had heard about Sushi Thai's $1 special, so my wife and I went to check it out. It was very crowded, but we were seated immediately. After that, it was all downhill. The $1 pieces were small and not especially fresh, and the rolls were sloppily and hastily made. Ther service was slow, though friendly. Nothing foodwise was worth the drive to return, however.

Excellent, fresh and beautifully presented sushi as it's best AND at the best prices you'll see anywhere in town. Great friendly and smiling staff and Tony's a hoot! Great place and my all time favorite.

I went there last night after many recommendations for the place, and we were not disappointed. The ambiance was amazing; I loved the tables with the elephants and the jungle carved into them (it looks better than the way I described it!). The food was delicious as well; hubby got Pad Thai and a Thai spring roll and I got the Tom Kha soup and red curry with vegetables. Everything was just divine. We'll definitely go back.

My friends and I eat at Sushi-Thai as often as we can...The Thai food is good (though not the best I've had), but the sushi is delicious. It's always fresh and carefully prepared--I highly recommend the spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and bagel rolls. In addition, the wait staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is pleasant. I would recommend eating at Sushi-Thai in the evenings when the price of sushi is reduced--the lunch menu can get pricy (especially if you don't care for the lunch specials).

Sushi-Thai rocks. The sushi was great. The fried rice was fantastic. And they even allowed the kids to eat McDonalds at the table with us.

The sushi here is pretty good, but for the price it is excellent--$1 sushi in the evening. If you are looking for sushi on a budget--that isnt bad tasting either--this is the place to go. Also, the atmosphere is really nice and it seems pretty authentic (but I have never been to Japan--so what do I know).

Pros: Great prices, nice atmosphere
