I lived in the Durham Hosiery Mill apartments for more than a year. The walls are so thin that EVERY sound penetrates and the walls are not adequately connected to the outer walls, so if you're on an upper floor, you can hear EVERY sound from the floor below.

The roach problem is EXTREME. There are at least three - five varieties of roaches infesting the buildings and the management's pest control is inadequate and poorly executed. I had to jump up and down to get my apartment adequately treated and even then ended up buying my own roach traps and such.

The ceilings are old beams that are not sealed and large spiders descend from them regularly. They appear to be some variation of recluse, the golden eastern variety perhaps, and they are numerous. During my time there no pest control to deal with the spiders was ever performed. Even the bathroom was infested with these spiders and it did not have beamed ceilings.

The windows are HUGE and double-paned. They are DANGEROUS to the point where residents are not allowed to try and open the windows themselves but are instructed to call maintenance if they want a window open or closed. When I had to have temporary air conditioning units installed when the main system went out, one of the windows nearly fell in on the maintenance men. It was quite frightening.

The maintenance team is good, the management merely adequate. I NEVER met the social worker once and was only able to find out information I needed from other residents.

A good friend of mine moved to the Hosiery Mill Apts five years years ago and is still excited about being there. I visit her often and I understand her excitement. Althought the building is old and need of remodeling, the management is quick to respond to repair requests, Unlike her old apartment complex there are washers and dryers in each bullding. Pat really likes the social activities offered including bingo, spades, pool, and the big screen tv in the common areas. There is also a beauty parlor and a dollar store on site. She also enjoys bible study and church service with other tenants and visitors on Monday night,
