I almost didn't move in because of all the bad reviews but I'm glad I didn't listen. Most of them are untrue and I think many were written by the same person. This place is not perfect, but if you want to live in an actual apartment

It's a nice community. And I will miss living here. Do not listen to any previous reviews. The "cow" hasn't been here for a few months now. And the new staff has been great. I would recommend living here to any of my friends.

After reading the reviews and calling this community I will not live here! This place could be so much better than it is. Who wants to deal with a management group that doesn't care! So why should I even schedule a visit!

Why don't the owners get rid of the candy bar eating COW! put her whale booty out to graze! where she should be. Where is the rating for bottom of the barrel! where this place belongs!!

I lived in The Beckanna for four years. The first three years were great....then they got a new property manager. She is rude, unprofessional, and LAZY.
Her talent? Sitting in her back office eating candy bars. The other two office workers, Laney and Sarah, are extremely nice and helpful. If you have to deal with the office then go to them - they actually care to do their work.
The property manager, Teresa, is a nightmare to deal with. She either gives you a blank stare with a false smile and shrugs her shoulders while saying "I don't know...sorry..." or she's mean as a snake. Go in one day and say "Whey the is the sky blue?" and she'll give you the blank stare. Go in the next day and ask the same question, she'll rip your head off then bad mouth a few other tenants for good measure. Crazy.
She also enjoys writing memos, emails, and signs to post around the building that badmouth the tenants as well. I think she's confused herself with being the "boss" of the tenants. It's clear she has no interest in actually helping anyone other than helping herself to another Snickers bar. Things at the Beckanna have gone down hill under her management - dog poop galore, broken elevators ALL THE TIME (3 months straight!), rent payment problems (charging too much by "accident" 3 out of 12 months), and more.
I'm so happy to be out! I feel sorry for Laney and Sarah that they're stuck under that tyrant's rule.
Save yourself! Don't do it!

Moved it in 2008, had a great experience. Moved back in in 2009-2011 and it couldn't have been worse. We were never 1 day late on rent, no complaints, never made a peep about anything, we were model tenants and I have the rental record of 6 other apartmnents and houses to back that up, and Beckanna insists on keeping to screw over its tenants. The only person who does anything in this place is the ------ maintance worker. ----- spends all day walking around the grounds with a cup of coffee and a cigarette. She is out ther scooping dog poop, picking up cigarette butts, cleaning the pool, EVERYTHING! And don't think to ask anyone on the property for help if your car battery dies, because they will say something crazy like "if I jump your car it might ruin my engine." Okay so let a mother and her baby sit and wait for AAA for an hour, that very nice of you. Also ----- acts like a child. If you need him to do something in your apartment its like he holds a grudge for doing his job. He will be nice to you until you need something then pout around, being rude to you from then on out.
*Office staff is nice. Two faced but nice. They will smile to your face and act like your best friend but then be unhelpful and down right unreasonable if you need anything.
*Laundry facilities are terrible just terrible. Nothing else you can say about that.
*A group of about ----- year old women who will yell at you for anything you do. In winter they sit in the lobby in front of the main door to chat and then yell at you if you walk in and out going about your own business, ladies there is a game room where you can go talk and close the door away from the cold air from the main door.
*Don't forget your 60 day move out notice, lived in 6 different apartments and houses and never ever had anything over 30 days required, they will jump your rent from the 800's to 1300. READ THE FINE PRINT OR YOU WILL GET SCREWED!!!
* Walls are thin and you hear EVERYTHING! Especially the people above you and any noise from outside your windows. Not a good place if you have kids!! I am pretty sure there were 12 people living in a 2 bedroom above us. All day and all night kids were running up and down the hall, some drunken man sat on his deck and through beer cans off, many landing on my deck, including broken glass, cigarette butts and anything being swept from above. And if you live on the 1st floor be prepared for the lawncare workers to actually blow grass, leaves and everything else onto your porch. Sat there behind the window and watch the guy walk up and blow leaves onto my deck. He saw me and continued to blow stuff onto my deck and all over my deck furniture.
* Pet policy is insane! 500 per pet NONREFUNDABLE!
* Elevators are always broken.
* You can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig. Million dollar renovations don't hide the fact its an old old building. Bugs, mold, thin walls, outdated plumbing and electricity, Too many problems to deal with for a renter.
* Also when you move out don't leave any trash in the dumpster they will charge you $150 and say they had to get to specially towed away when there are no signs saying you can leave it out there and there was about 20 christmas trees piled up till the end of Feburary which didn't see to be a big deal but a 1 mattress next to the dumpster will cost you $150!
*Also be sure to get a cleaning service to come in because if there is one speck of dust they will cost you about 100$ too.

It seems they can't get anyone to move here because compared to newer properties the price it too high, and they have nothing to offer. So instead of fixing the problem they just over charge the people who already live here to cover there expenses.

Dont make the same mistake I made and get fooled by a nice model apartment and a few flashy descriptions of the life you can lead if you live here. This place is going down hill fast, don't go down with it.

The apartments are in a good location. However, when the apartments start to empty out due to broken elevators and terrible office staff, they drop the rent so low that horrible, loud, kid infested residents move in. They will not however, give loyal residents the prices they will give people off the street. They do not fix issues in the apartments and if you ask for anything the staff is so incredibly rude. That was the main reason I got out as quick as I could. It is true about Meg, but the company was smart enough to get rid of her. There is still one horrible guy left and let me tell you he is as moody and rude as they get.
Mold is an issue, the appliances do not work as they should and they are not stainless steel. They are cheap impersonations and the hot water is like a 20 gallon tank even in my two bedroom. People do run through the hall daily and it is loud. I never had problems with barking dogs but they freaked on my mom for bringing her dog over.
The elevators have like never, ever worked and I had to move out of the front which was not cool.
I was intrigued by this place at first. If the staff was switched completely and they revamped a few things to get the nursing home smell out they would be on there way to maybe being worth 650.00.
Do a Raleigh Crime Map of this place. Lots of recent problems and no lighting or security.

Pros: Location

Cons: Everything else

I am not a nit pick but I will say this place is totally talked up...

We didn't get to see our apartment until the day we moved in and signed the lease, this was my first apartment out on my own so I didn't think that was a big deal, in a matter of WEEKS we had mold and mildew growing in our bathroom, and I tried everything to make sure that didn't happen, we actually asked maintenance to fix it, and they did but now we're having the same issue again, and when I pulled it up..it was even worse underneath what they "fixed"

Laundry is horrible...I have filled it half way because if you fill it up all the way you have dirty clothes still...and I don't know about you, but a dollar per load to still have dirty underwear and shirts in return is ridiculous, not to mention the dryers don't always dry your clothes! I have also experienced people taking my clothes out of the washer just because they are impatient and I time my laundry so I make sure I don't have anyone waiting too long behind me- it is a 30 minute wash and about a 54 minute dry...yet somehow my clothes are pulled out before they are rung out? RIDICULOUS!

And now that summer is approaching, we have been having hornets enter through our windows which we keep closed. When we use the disposal in the kitchen, it kicks up back into our bathroom so we'll have a horrible smell enter!

This place depresses me, for $650 a month I don't expect a 5th avenue loft, but I do expect to have working facilities, people that don't run through the halls without no consideration for others, and may I mention the elevators are THE WORST!

They are always broken, and I don't mind walking up 6 flights of stairs, but there are a lot of people in our building that are older and really can't do that...even walking up one flight is exhausting for them

I grew up in South Florida and I don't know about you but the apartments I lived in were nice, this place is a piece of bologna, and they need to get their act together, the staff is fake and rude and they obviously don't communicate because when my mother visited for the weekend so I could pick out my wedding dress, I told the front office she would be having her dogs stay with us until Sunday, I got a call asking if I had dogs because people were complaining. FUNNY WHEN I COMPLAINED ABOUT NOISE THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE COPS, not to mention that girl Meg gave me an attitude like I was incompetent which made me even more aggravated.

I am so excited to be moving into a place that has amazing facilities, cable, washer and dryers included in our unit, trash pick-up outside our door...not to mention a pretty straight forward staff. This southern hospitality back stabbing crap that goes on in this building is obnoxious and I CAN NOT WAIT to move out. Yes, they have parties that have free alcoholic beverages, but might I add this, when you have people puking or being loud and drunk, or you're walking to your car early in the AM and notice a person who is still drunk and walking to their car and speeding off almost hitting you...ask yourself is it worth it. I am not paying $650 a month to feel unsafe in my home, and if we could have afforded to break our lease 2 months after we moved in, we would have...unfortunately we still have to wait 2 weeks to move out, and I am SOOO ready!

Pros: Downtown is pretty close

Cons: kitchen space, laundry, parking, bathrooms, ac units, mold

I didn't want to write a bad review honestly, because I really don't have the time, but this week has really sent me over the edge. I have lived here less than a year, and it seems almost weekly that you get a harassing, threatening letter on your door. The staff here is absolutely miserable, they hate the residents and make it more than obvious with harsh, awful letters, nitpicking about every possible thing. It gets to the point that you don't even feel comfortable coming home, much less calling this your home. This situation definitely borders on harassment.
I have not had any problems with laundry or any overpopulation of any race in the building, although I have heard horror stories about peoples laundry getting stolen and tampered with. You definitely need to stay on top of it or I am certain there would be problems.
In the summer the parties do get out of hand and I wish they would invest that extra money into fixing the elevators as they NEVER work. It would also be nice if they would heat and cool the halls. Fix up the building and keep the noise down for people who need to get to bed earlier in the summer. These events really cause a parking headache. College kids trash the halls and elevator with beer and trash. It is a huge issue. They trash the property much more than animals.
The elevators are a horrible problem. They break constantly and do nothing for days about the problem.
The noise is somewhat a problem with neighbors. You can hear absolutely everything in the halls. Its similar to a hotel as far as noise. I have pretty bad neighbors so I'm not sure what it would be like to have a good respectable one.
My big problem here is the staff. The are very hateful and do not keep it a secret that they hate the residents. I was checking my mail today and explicitly heard Lanie and Megan talking about residents and a lady carrying her dog through the lobby. The rambled loudly, b*tching on and on about the residents, so much that I could hear them three floors or so below. It was astounding. I just stood there and listened to them. Staff this angry should be terminated immediately, no questions asked. Steven Bell needs to send in a team to revamp the staff. No one is going to resign a lease at 820.00 for a one bedroom in a community where you are constantly reprimanded, harassed and belittled on a daily to weekly basis.
The good things are the kitchen and you get decent sized bathroom. The pool in the summer is nice and is never overcrowded.
I honestly just do not appreciate all the hatefulness that this community evokes. It is a really bad atmosphere for all.
Definitely will not resign here.

My boyfriend and I moved into Beckanna over the summer and initially fell in love! The staff was immediately super nice and and everyone was very inviting... but we still didn't really fit in until we got a dog! The only thing that sucks is that we dont live on the first floor and as soon as cold weather it it got to be SUCH a pain since the elevators rarely work!!!!! I have NEVER EVER EVER had an issue with noise..... never heard to much noise or anything. You can only hear things from out in the hall. The only reason we are even considering leaving after our lease is the LAUNDRY!!!!!! IT IS SO INCONVENIENT! And if you leave a load in either washer/dryer for a minute past the time its finished people will just toss it on top. Not to mention our apartment is almost the furthest from the laundry room.

But we love the locationa nd environment!

This place is super loud. There is no parking and on Thursdays when they have events it is so loud and there is not a space to be found. It is like drunk college kids running around trashing the apartments drunk in the halls. The elevators smell of beer constantly and it is so loud you cant even think. I would not recommend this place. The pub room is full of blacks that is true. They loiter all over the property bc Beckanna has move in specials and really low rent people move in and ruin the atmosphere. Its not safe. A drunk driver slammed into 4 cars like a week ago. Its bc they let anyone move in. Nasty and loud. Beware.

Okay so to be honest, everyone knows that the Beckanna staff falsifies reviews and tries to up their rating on every site. The review under me was written by the staff, I don't care who replies and says "oh no, I am a real resident who loves it there." No way. The staff definitely shows preferential treatment to all of their friends they force to live there, but I can guarantee no one is honestly happy with the property. The apartments are nice, granted, but they are overpriced and OLD. This is the noisiest apartment building in Raleigh. I do agree that this place is like a dorm. A nice one. The only staff member that was helpful was Michelle and she got the heck out of there. The staff there now is unhelpful and unreliable. They have a super high turnover rate of residents and staff. No one lives there longer than one term. The place is definitely livable but there are way nicer places on Glenwood than this. DO NOT PAY 800 to live there. It would be your worst mistake.

I've been living at the Beckanna since October of 2007 and have absolutely loved it! The location is awesome and the apartments are so cute! The kitchens are awesome. I like the sixties feel of the bathrooms, which is one of the reasons why I rented here. I agree with the other reviews that there was a roof leak, and luckily my apartment was unscathed. My neighbor, however, did get effected, but she just signed up for another year. Unfortunatley things happen, but she said it wasn't bad enough for her to move out, as she loves here apartment. I've never had any issues with the office or maintenance staff. They have always been very helpful and friendly. Apartment living is just that, so as far as apartments go, this place is Top Notch!

Pros: Great location, cute floor plans, great socials

Cons: Older building

.

This place isn't the best you can do for your money. Its obvious the minute you come inside. Honestly, I was out walking my dog and there were a group of young african americans combing their hair all gathered by the side entrance making a lot of noise and mocking me as I walked by. They are always in the designated "PUB" room and make certain areas feel very unwelcome. Its become quite unbearable for a lot of residents.
I know about 75 percent of people only live out one lease here, because the do raise the rent and well over 10 percent.
Dennis in the office is pretty nice, the others seem sortof gossipy. I would agree slightly with the other reviews.
The place is animal friendly so if you aren't, I wouldn't recommend it.
The apartment kitchens are the best you can find. Very nice. If you are into old bathrooms you will like them. You can not get a hot shower though.
They are cool if you are late with rent, I had an emergency and was ten days late and they worked with me.
Neighbors are pretty cool, although you can HEAR EVERYTHING.
The property is very well maintained, and YES the landscapers do come pretty early. About 830 or 9am, And its loud no matter your floor.
I would recommend the front part of the building because there always seems to be issues with the apartments of the back halls.
They do have social events in the summer, if you are into that sort of thing you will be happy. If you are not, it is very loud and they DONT make vistors park in a designated area which makes parking a beast.
I would say the properties biggest problem is PARKING and loitering by certain groups. They are loud and very rude. If the community stayed like it was last year it would be better.

Pros: Kitchen, Landscaping, Dennis, Dog Friendly

Cons: Parking is rough, goups of people hanging out in the parking lots. RENT IS HIGH

.

These apartments are notorious for raising peoples rent hundreds of dollars at the end of your lease, so beware.
I moved out in August of 08 and they wanted to raise my rent by 200.00. The front staff is horrible. There is a large lady in the front office who flirts with every guy that walks through the door to the point of harassment. Girls don't let your fellows live here! Seriously.
The whole back part of the building and some in the front were completely flooded this year. They had all the residents living in hotels. There is mold throughout the entire building.
The maintenance man is so rude. The office staff is so gossipy you can barely walk through the lobby. There is no place to park. The ac/heating units, DO NOT work.
There is dog urine constantly in the elevators. You can hear everything in the halls. The walls and paint are cracked.
I lived next to the loudest people on earth and complained constantly and nothing was done. Someone put stickers all over my car in the parking lot.
If you like the dorm room feel, wthh lots of noise and parties this is for you.
Oh yeah, and the summer band functions go on into the late hours of the night so if you have a porch be prepared to be up ALL night.
This place is loud and out of control with their high prices.
KEEP LOOKING! All the rumors about this place are true.

Pros: Leaving

Cons: The price is CRAZY. You can live in North Hills for the same price. Horrible office staff. SMELLS. MOLD.

.

Actually it was over thirty apartments damaged during the flood while reroofing. The residents were shuffled off to the cheapest hotel possible for two months during repairs. In these 30 units, they DID NOT replace the moldy carpet in one single unit. This complex is consumed with mold. The back part of the building is the worst. No residents were compensated for anything and the maintenance is an absolute joke. They have one guy and he is the absolute biggest j*rk you will ever meet. They take forever to even respond as there is the one guy for all the apartments. He half arsedly fixes things and is rude while doing so.
The whole place is a joke. The front staff has the turnover rate of an IHOP. The price for the places is way off base. They tried to raise my rent 200 and make me sign a 15 month lease to get that rate. The apartments are tiny and poorly put together. I moved out a month early and still paid just to get into a new normal apartment. This is absolutely no way to live. The staff does NOT care about any residents. The apartments are crazy loud and you can hear absolute everything in the hall and the courtyard at all times.
It is basically like living in a Best Western.
Lots of dogs barking, no place to park, VERY high prices and poor condition. I would ask which apartments were flooded and definitely avoid them. If you look around you can find brand new developed apartments for the same rate that are in immaculate shape.
Do not waste your time here. I got out as soon as possible and wouldn't live there for free again, if offered.

Pros: Good Kitchens

Cons: HIGH prices. Maintenance. Floods. Office Staff

.

At first glance, this seems like a great deal, and it is, at least for people who are first moving to the area. However, the cons soon add up to what makes this only a temporary residence, not someplace to stay for any sort of long time.

********Pros********
Price (low in comparison to other places),
Nice interiors (especially kitchens)

********Cons********
Prices go up substantially after first year (rent hike). Card operated washers and dryers in separate rooms on each floor worked very poorly (even the new ones bought). There is ALWAYS noise. The walls are thick, but the doors are pencil thin, which means you can hear, someone 10 doors down making just a bit of noise. Even worse, there always seems to be some sort of construction going on (Roof, chutes, etc.) During roof construction, water leaked down from the top floor all the way down to the bottom! At least one apartment was flooded; thankfully, it wasn't ours, but I feel bad for the other people. The noise from this construction was practially untolerable (difficult to even stay within the apartment, let alone concentrate on anything). Response repair service is pretty good, but follow ups and communication in this aspect are poor. The staff is very nice (especially Amy, who was there but left), but occasionally they seem stressed out and even small questions become difficult to ask because it seems like they have more important things to deal with. We decided to move to another great residence (and amazingly got a much better deal, 1000 more square feet for only $100 more a month). We were happy initially, but these problems soon added up and the headache wasn't worth staying.

Pros: Price/Location

Cons: Noise problems, High-rise building (elevators are a pain)

I just moved into the Beckanna and I am so happy with my choice. I looked at other apartments in the area and they were just too expensive for what you got or they were inexpensive, but you got what you paid for. Beckanna is a perfect compromise between money and quality. I don't mind paying a little bit more if I know I'm going to be safe, in a great location downtown Raleigh (perfect location for shopping, work, dining, partying!), and the managers are just the nicest people. There's no fuss and it's a simple application process. I just moved from Chicago so I was looking for something a little more fun and unique than your usual apartment and this is a wonderful place to live. Also: Utilities aren't that expensive here! Electricity is very low since they're energy efficient and they have discounts on cable and internet packages from Time Warner which are really cheap. They also have a beauty salon on the main floor and she's super nice! :) How can you beat that?

Pros: Perfect location, beautiful kitchens and brand new appliances, clean!, neighbors and staff are very friendly

Cons: They're a little bit pricier than most apartments for the size, but: the location, new rennovation, and safe security outweigh the cost.
