We ate lunch there on a recent scouting trip for our wedding and loved their LUNCH menu. The food was wonderful and we thought we had found a great jewel.
We came back for our wedding a month later and decided to take the family for DINNER. We were early so they were not fully opened yet and we had drinks outside. We were seated at 5:00 and began the search on the dinner menu. All of our lunch favorites were gone so we went with Ny strip( very tasty and filled my son), two Mahi dinner specials( overpriced for the serving size, the fish was over salted, the asperagus were the thickness of very small straws, overall fair), 1/2 pound of shrimp (overcooked and returned), and for some unknown reason the last order did not come until everyone else had completed their meals. It was Salmon over what appeared to be lentils. They apoligized to us for the lateness of the Salmon and the overcooked shrimp, which was nice, but we were 1 of 2 groups of people in the restaurant? The bill was 170.00 and nothing was credited for the errors. I left the waiter a 30 for his trouble since the kitchen was the issue.
I would go back for lunch but not dinner. The are trying to compete with much nicer restaurants in Duck and get away with charging the same for so so dishes. Stick to what works for you and leave the upscale menu to the other restaurants!

I have been going to the Roadside Grill for the last year. I am from West Virginia and just went this week. The new menu selection was great. Dinner menu was above par for most places on the Outer Banks. I had the "Beet Vinagrette and Puppy Drum". I was looking for something different than the usual fried fish/buffet of the Outer Banks and this place delivered on every level. It came out with flavor and portions. The waiter was very observant and friendly. Matt my waiter had an extensive knowledge of beer and wine that was available. The head chef (I think Benjamin) came to our table to ask about the meals that we had ordered. This was also a nice touch which capped off a great evening. I am going to leave a 1-star rating due to it seems like the first rating given to Roadside Grill. Please give your own opinion on this. I will be back every time I visit the Outer Banks. I do recommend this for a great dinner. I also asked to view the lunch menu and I am excited to give it a try.

Best of Luck!

Let me begin by saying that my wife, children and I have enjoyed our family getaways to Duck, NC for quite some time now. We have always included lunch and/or dinner at 'The Roadside' as part of our Outer Banks experience.
Unfortunately though, I have noticed that the overall dining quality at this establishment has diminished over our last several visits. I am not one to claim to be a food critic, but I will tell you that it is in no way as good as it once was. Beside the fact that the food has become unapproachable and bland, the overall condition of this 'restaurant' is questionable. Upon our arrival, we found the parking lot behind the restaurant to be unlit and somewhat dangerous, leaving us to navigate our way inside through the unstable footing of oyster shells and gravel. As we entered, my wife pointed out to me that the health rating posted had deteriorated over our last several visits. Perhaps it was the faint scent of cat urine in the building or the dust covered knick-knacks on the shelves that earned them this score. The wine list is predictable and uninspired, but the service staff that presents it is, and has always been fantastic. The waiters at 'The Roadside' are the only part of the dining experience that has been enjoyable and consistent recently. Unfortunately, I believe that it is time for us to move on and find a new family dining tradition next time we come down to visit.

The Roadside was once a secret. Now there are lines. That's for a good reason...the food, service and atmosphere (upstairs) are the best in town. Start with a couple appetizers - the chowder rivals that in New England and the shrimp and grits plate is different (in a very good way!). The cooks take great pride to make sure each plate leaving their grille looks and tastes great. The fish is caught locally. Their sauces are Roadside secrets. The combination of fresh food and unique accompaniments creates a great meal time after time. I suggest you try the special...it's always their best creation! The servers and cooks take pride in the restaurant and go out of their way to make your experience memorable. Generally, servers come an go but I have seen the same faces serving year after year.

The restaurant itself is unique. The upstairs is cozy, warm and in the middle of all the "action". On the other hand, the dining area downstairs is more traditional and intimate. When the weather is warm, the outside dining area provides a perfect setting for drinks and select appetizers.

We eat at the Roadside whenever we are lucky enough to get to the OBX. I will be there in a couple weeks having my Shrimp & Grits and Roadside Chicken Salad. Woohoo! Go!!!

Every time I go to the OBX, I visit Roadside. Friendly, fast, and quality food, not to mention the value price tag. My girlfriend got the Prime Rib Sandwich and I got the Blackened Tilapia Sandwich, both were mouth watering and the homemade potato salad is out of this world. It was a bit cool to sit outside but during the warmer months, the dining porch is excellent. I HIGH recommend going here.

We live in Delaware and visit OBX once a year. We always make a point to eat at the Roadside....the food is fantastic and staff is always friendly. We actually went there twice in one day our last trip...lunch and then dinner.
