You know its very disappointing to go to a place that others have said was great. It reminds me to wait for my own experience and then I would not be so let down.\r

The beer was good but a bit pricey. The food seems to be hit or miss. I've been there several times and in general have enjoyed it.

My husband, my daughter, and I went to this restaurant expecting a normal casual dining experience. We are not at all picky about food and are not demanding customers. No one came to our table for 10 to 15 minutes so we had to ask the hostess to send us our server. When our server finally brought us our drinks, I received a coke instead of the diet coke I had ordered (and with no straw). This is a totally human mistake and it wouldn't have bothered me if it it weren't for the fact that it took ages for our server to get back to the table. When she did, she stated that my coke was indeed a diet coke and that she would bring me a replacement just to appease me. Again. No straw, but at least it was a diet coke. When our food came, mine was fine, but my husband's chicken sandwich was raw. Now he's the type of man who would eat a raw chicken sandwich if it weren't really, really raw. Anyhow, I was finished with my meal by the time the server came back to check on us. By then we had to leave, so my husband never got to eat anything at all. Also, our outdoor seating might as well have been indoors since we were tucked in an awkward corner with no view. Also, there is no kids menu and no crayons for entertaining the little ones.

Reading through these reviews reminded me that TOTH is the place CHers love to hate. They all seem to think it's unimaginative to go there, but I must say, it's a great place to take a friend visiting town for the 1st time. I've found that the specials are somewhat touch & go, but most of the ones I've had have been great. Personal favorites include the fried chicken plate, the Baja Chicken Salad, the Old Well White, & the Sweet Potato Cheese Fries. Great place to hang out w/ friends, creative entries.

Pros: good food, great location, neat atmosphere

Cons: parking, crowds

I was there the same night the previous reviewer was there. I counted over 300 people try and get to MJ. The staff was as polite as they could be but some people were really obnoxious in their efforts to get to MJ or to take pictures or both.
By the way, there is always food available when I go to Top of the Hill. However, they stop serving dinner and go to their bar menu at 10 because the bar crowds are so large and want to take over the tables so they can't serve restaurant patrons well.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Location, Beer, Food

Cons: None

.

I have always enjoyed going to TOTH due to the fact that it is a great view of Franklin Street and a decent crowd. I have been going there consistently for many years after the football games. However, I have been very frustrated recently due to the arrogance and difficulty of the staff. It all comes down to poor management. I can understand not taking game day reservations, but why would they turn away people because "they are no longer serving lunch, etc" on a mid afternoon game day AND they stop serving food at 10PM. They could make a ton of $$ here after the games. Also, Michael Jordan was there tonight, and one of the managers kept telling everyone not to take pictures (based on MJ's request) and while everyone was following "the rules", he kept saying that he was going to ask anyone to leave that tries to take one. I am a professional and don't need a 20 something year old that I will be kicked out of the place. He could have politely said that MJ has requested no photos please and got the same point across. Also, since when does MJ control what the fans of CH do?

Pros: Atmosphere, beer selection

Cons: Difficult Staff

.

We usually eat here every year for a friends birthday. The food is very good and the atmosphere is the best. It always seems to be busy but the service is first class. It is a little pricey, but not overly.

A group of friends and I made the grave mistake of thinking TOTH would be a good selection for dinner this past week... the experience was nothing short of disastrous! I used to go to this place all the time, and can honestly say it has gone DOWN HILL fast! It seems like this restaurant now intentionally targets a very drunk crowd of sloppy beer chuggers and NOT diners. Our party (consisting of 8 people) came out to celebrate a birthday. There had been a football game earlier in the night, and the bar was not super crowded. However, our party waited almost three hours to be seated!!! Despite having reservations, we were barely permitted upstairs by the incredibly rude door security (who at 5'3" wouldn't have been able to bounce anyone, if necessary). We were told we would not be allowed to go up and meet our party until out table was ready to be seated; this did not stop them from filing in a semi-conscious group of drunk undergrads. Once upstairs, we were groped by hideous drunkards. Our server seemed bothered to have a table, the food wasn't good. TOTH- leave the frat parties to the frat houses... not your early evening Saturday night dining. I've talked to a lot of people who have had a very similar experience. If you want to be burped and spilled on, go to Top of the Hill. If you want a nice dinner, let me suggest the Lantern or Elaine's.... or *anywhere* else on the strip.

The food is good. The service is usually great. Keith is the best bartender there. He always remembers my name and asks me how school is going. Pretty neat that that can still happen these days. Yea Keith!

We're new to the area and wanted to try some new places around the Triangle area. Top of the Hill was one of the places we've tried, and will definitely go back. The outside deck is great, friendly people, and a great place to be and relax. Great exclusive beer, although one waitress was rude.

I ordered the lizard chips (deep fried pickle chips and halepeno pepper rings), and the wild mushroom cripsy grit cake. The lizard chips were so so. Too much batter, and kinda tough. The dipping sauce with it was tasty.
I was totally won over by the grit cake. I was nervous to order it b/c I don't generally like grits, but I felt like trying something new. It was Perfectly crisp outside , soft yet gritty inside. the cashew sauce was perfectly seasoned and very creamy. They were generous with the mushrooms, which were fresh and perfectly meaty. There wer little bits of tomato on top that were the most perfectly ripe, bright red tomatoes I've ever had.
I will go back again soon.

Pros: service, good variety on the menu, good beers made on site.

Cons: you may have to walk a bit from your parking

My wife and I took our daughter and her boyfriend to this place. The food was good (American Fare) the beer was great, as was our waitress, but the guy doing the magic tricks was superb. We went to the Magic Castle once in LA and I thought those guys were good. This guy was like David Blaine...he was fantastic. My daughter doesn't normally go for that type of thing, but when he had her school ring on his keyring, her jaw dropped. We're going back later this fall.
The view from the terrace was great, so if it's good weather try to sit outside. Oh yeah, get the beer with the blueberries in it. Thank you Top of the Hill.

On the Down side- parking was a little akward and we did have a bit of a wait to eat (we did go on Friday.)

This is going to sound elitist, but TOTH appeals to a certain crowd - younger and/or less discriminatory palates who like the beer selection and location. Otherwise, I just don't get it. Parking is the usual challenge in Chapel Hill. Food is fair but hardly "fine dining" as some reviewers have stated, unless you're comparing against nearby fast food places for college kids (which I'd probably prefer anyway). If we call this a 5-star fine dining establishment, then what do you do with Tullulahs, Lantern, Elaine's, Crooks Corner, etc. a few blocks away? Don't get me wrong, there is nothing particularly wrong about TOTH, it's just not terribly unique. Order a fried appetizer and you'll get the usual pub fare - heavy on the batter and kinda generic on the palate. Order a steak and you'll get a steak, nothing more or less. (The menu is reasonably diverse, so most people can probably find something they like.) Order a drink, and you'll wait a long time, then probably end up getting something decent. :) It's a fine place for people watching esp. on weekend nights after the dinner crowds leave. All in all, I don't mind when people say let's meet at TOTH, but if I'm picking, I'd much rather go to the many other fine choices on Franklin or elsewhere.

I was part of a group of 15 who went to Top of the Hill for dinner last weekend. We each ordered appetizers, a couple of drinks and then entrees (the entrees took at least 30 minutes to arrive), ate our food and asked for our checks. We had arrived at 6:30, so by the time 8:30 rolled around the restaurant was emptying out - there were empty tables all around us.

While we were waiting for our credit cards to be charged, the manager (Rebecca) came over and rudely asked us to leave - and then came back 10 minutes later with an even more forceful approach, this time saying that another party was waiting for the table. We were told that there is a 2 hour limit on groups and we had unfortunately exceeded our time slot.

SERIOUSLY?! A limit on groups and once you exceed 2 hours they kick you out?! I've never heard of that before, especially at a more upscale restaurant such as this, and it certainly wasn't communicated when we made the reservation. To me, turning over tables and accommodating other reservations is a management problem - especially in the case of our group which was dining at a normal pace (not dawdling).

Further, Rebecca should have checked with her server to make sure the checks were settled before she started harassing us. I might even go so far as to suggest that she find a creative way to use one of the, I don't know, maybe TEN other empty tables around us to accommodate the next party.

I was appalled at the audacity of this manager (and the restaurant's policy) and I would recommend that anyone looking to dine with a group seek out another venue.

My husband and I have been here several times; he likes their southern fried chicken dinner. The other menu options aren't great and what's there tastes average. I've had 3 different dinners and all were on par with frozen dinners. The service is always bad when it's busy (which is most of the time) so don't expect great service, though the servers do try hard and are generally nice. You will have to ask for water, for a 2nd glass of wine, and bread if you want it, and most likely will have to flag down your server at least once. There is a good drink selection, and the bartenders can help you if you're not sure what you want to drink. This is a good place to have a couple of drinks and maybe a couple of appetizers, but not a great dinner spot if you're really hungry and want value.

My husdand and I really enjoyed Top of the Hill. The wait staff was friendly and the food was pretty good. I got the Santa Fe Chicken Pasta. It needed more chicken but it was still alright. My husband's food was REALLY good. He got a stuffed chili thing with black beans and chicken. It was SO GOOD. Next time I'm getting that. Besides the food, the enviroment was nice. It's a great place to chill out after bumming around Franklin Street.

Unlike some of the reviews, We have had excellent service and outstading meals at this restaurant. Their pasta dishes are to die for, and so are their salmon dishes. I always look forward to the presentation of these meals, and the desserts are outstanding. I do reommend reservations, especially on a weekend night. There is excitement in the air when you go during the fall when there is so much to witness if you sit on the patio. The bar portion is always friendly and drinks are off the charts!

I went to this restaurant with my family because its rating was so high on citysearch. We sat down at a table in the corner near the window which we liked, but we were asked to move to another table, and they didn't give a reason why. 5 minutes later they sat another family at that round table and it definitely didn't appear that the table was reserved by this family. The waiter we had took our orders and then disappeared for 15 minutes, which I guess wouldn't have been a problem had we not been waiting on refills for 10 of those minutes. But, to his credit, for the remainder of the evening he did a wonderful job getting us refills.

I got the pork tenderloin and I wasn't a big fan of the sauce it came with. The tenderloin also had a lot of fat in it that I tried to cut around most of my meal. My mashed potatoes were really good, though. One of my other family members got the filet mignon which was the special for the evening. I tried some of it and it was not tender at all. I chewed on the piece for a good bit. The steak also had a good amount gristle in it. The only other problem we had at the place was that they overcharged us for the filet special. Normally the filet is 24.99, but it was on special for 22.99. We had to call them on our way home because they had charged us 26.99. They quickly corrected this problem, though.

I might try this place again, because I am hoping this was just a once in a lifetime bad experience there. A lot of people apparently really like this place, but from our experience it really made it hard for us to see why.

This is a great place. I was in town to visit friends and go to a football game. The food is exceptional and the patio gives a great view of Franklin Street. You have to try the Thumbs and Toes (spicy chicken), and the Filet Mignon. Inside the bar is non-smoking, so you can actually see and converse with people. Also, being from the west, I asked if they could turn one of the HDTV's to a west coast game, and they changed it right away. I was told though if the Tarheels were playing, that definetely wouldn't have happened (It gets pretty crazy). The night I was there Stuart Scott (ESPN) was there, and was told Roy Williams, Michael Jordan, etc. are regulars. When going for dinner make sure to get a table on the railing for a view of downtown Chapel Hill.

After checking out the "Top 10 things to do in the Triangle" I was excited to try out Top of the Hill for an outdoor venue with great views. My in laws were in town and we wanted to show them around. Being from Cary we don't make it out this far often but thought it sounded like it was worth the drive. It was not! The "server" threw 2 menus at us (there were 4 of us). The bar food was horrible and the menu options slim. I was sorry we had ordered drinks and had to stay an extra 10 minutes to finish those before driving to Southpointe were we found many wonderful dining choices. I don't know how this place got it's high rating..it is totally not worth it.

I had dinner there with family and was very disappointed by the menu choices. Food prep and quality were fine, but choice was very narrow. This is BREW PUB and they didn't have a single burger or chicken sandwich on the menu, but we already ordered drinks so we stayed. This was really one of the more forgettable meals that I've eaten in Chapel Hill. I do like there beer much better than the other Chapel Hill brew pub.

Pros: Good Beer, Service, Location

Cons: Slow Kitchen, Limited Menu

.

There are some pretty good beers here! The menu is definitely a step above most bars - and very reasonably priced. If it's available, definitely try the decadent special - Kobe beef burger with foie gras, lobster mayo, all for a steal of $15!! We had a hard time believing you could get Kobe beef so inexpensively! Their sauteed calamari was good and spicy, and I love the fact they offer a low carb menu! The only disappointment was a cajun risotto with a bad risotto texture, which was quickly forgotten upon the arrival of their chocolate chocolate cake - so good I came back the next night for more. The service was good- very helpful and friendly. THe ambience is pretty much like a TGIF/Applebees/chain restaurant except for the brewery in the back.

I've been to Top of the Hill a few times for dinner and plenty of times for night life and I've never been disappointed. The filet is magnificent, the calamari is fresh and flavorful and their salads are great. With specialty beers flowing and a great view of Franklin Street, I'd recommend this place as a dining experience or late night hang out.

Pros: good food, great view, beer

Cons: , crowded, upstairs

We're a few(!) years past our college years, so we tend to avoiud late nights and busy weekends to avoid the crowds. That said, we thoroughly enjoy the pleasant, efficient service and good, solid comfort food with nice gourmet touches. We also appreciiate the fine wine-by-the-glass menu, not being beer drinkers. Hey, this place is for grownups, too!

Overall a nice place with lots of potential. But watch out for food recommendations that skyrocket the price or simple appetizers. Summer Micro-brews leave much to be desired.

I'll be the first to agree that Top of the Hill has the best outside patio and view of Chapel Hill. Their homemade brews are also pretty good. But, the food is average--nothing on the menu that I haven't seen at 1 million other restaurants. It is one step above an Applebee's. The waitstaff seems nice enough, but I was rather shocked to see the chef chase a waiter out of the kitchen and curse at them about an order--in front of my table and by the bar--certainly makes you think twice about sending something back to the kitchen.

T.O.T.H. has far surpassed the title of exceptional restaurant/bar and through its unparalleled amalgam of cuisine, service, atmosphere, and, of course, micro-brewed ales has solidified itself as a true Southern Landmark. It is inconceivable that one could fully experience the charm of Chapel Hill without a visit to the Top of the Hill. I cannot speak highly enough about it or the remarkable people who make it what it is.
Oh, and sandwich on soft pretzel... pure genius.

Pros: SERVICE, CUISINE/BEVERAGES, VIEW OF HEAVEN

Recently took the parents out to dinner there and it was definately a good experience. Friendly service and a very nice view (we decided to brave the winter weather on the patio only to find that it was much nicer than the crowded inside... with candles, a nice view, not too many people, and surprisingly warm thanks to some gas heaters). The food was good, and very well-priced. The filet special was excellent and my mom really liked the catfish. My sister was a bit dissappointed with their vegetarian options, but she had a fairly decent pasta and managed to save room for some dessert a pretty tasty cheesecake. We tried Sunday brunch there as well (I still prefer Weaver Street), but my parents really liked it (a hearty, southern breakast with biscuits, bacon and eggs). Definately a very good "Chapel Hill experience."

Was there recently for ASU vs. UNC football game. This place rocked. Perfect location, great beers (IPA is the best), nice crowd. Went there at least once all 5 days we were in town. Food is great - try the tuna (out of this world!) Wish we had this place in AZ.

I was surprised when I bumped into this review page and saw some unflattering remarks. My wife and I go to Top of the Hill about once a month and never fail to have a great time. The food is excellent, the menu varied, the service is friendly, and the ambience is superb.

They have an outdoor deck, they take reservations, the bartenders remember you. All in all it is a great Chapel Hill experience and the place we take all of our guests.

Great Bar.....Great Restaurant. I went to this place late night for years and only got some appetizers like Nachos. etc. which were good not great. The drinks, the beers, and the bartenders were great.

It wasn't until I took a date up there that I realized how good of a restaurant it really is.....the entrees like the tuna, salmon and steak are great both in presentation and taste.

Other reviews of mentioned it being uber-yuppie and sorority crowd. Late night I guess I see that but 1) who cares, 2) late night is only one aspect of Top of the Hill.

I've been a few times over the past few years, it's never a disappointment, even when crowded, the service is attentive, food comes very quickly (especially compared to most restaurants around here), and the food is always delicious, with a menu to please anybody.

IF YOU'VE EVER WANTED TO FEEL LIKE YOU'RE IN A J.CREW CATALOG, AND WANTED TO SIP OVERPRICED DRINKS WITH BLAND FOOD AND LOUSY SERVICE, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. THE TERRACE IS NICE...WHEN IT'S WARM OUT. MOSTLY YUPPIE PROFFESSIONAL TYPES IN THEIR EARLY THIRTIES AND GRAD STUDENTS TRYING TO BE LIKE THEM. VERY STUFFY AND UPTIGHT. ANY OF THE PLACES ACROSS THE STREET WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER TIME FOR YOU'RE MONEY, AND THE CROWD IS USUALLY YOUNGER.

Recommended to us by a friend. When entering we expected a less than satisfying dining experience. We were completely surprised by the excellent pasta dishes, the supreme service, and the atmosphere. This restaurant will be remembered as one of our all time favorites, and we will visit it every chance we get.

No shirt..no shoes..no cleavage??.. no service! I've been to Top of the Hill several times, but only once for a meal. This is really a review of a bar. The location is great. There is no better view of Chapel Hill. It has all the makings of a great place to go. I've unfortunately learned one important lesson in my visits there. A MAN HAS NO CHANCE OF GETTING A DRINK AT THIS BAR! I've stood at the bar waiting for twenty minutes on more than one occasion. Granted, I'm not 6'5, but I'm taller than most of the lovely ladies I see returning time and time again to the bar to get cocktails for their boyfriends. I'll continue to visit Top of teh Hill. Where else can I go where I'm gauranteed that a girl has to buy ME a drink.

Get buzzed on a few martinis and expect to be entertained by drunk basketball players (UNC and Duke) hitting on wasted sorority girls. But watch out for the swinging Louis Vuitton pochettes and the knock-off Kate Spades, lest you lose any of the concoction that makes this place worth the haul up three floors. And don't worry that the girls look uncomfortably snug in their XOXO outfits. These girls intentionally buy clothes that are two sizes too small. Sober, it's like mixer-hell; drunk, it's like a John Water's comedy.

I like going here because the patio is so cool.
I just graduated and I will definitely miss it.
The food is expensive but the beer is good.
Great place to meet friends and hang out!

True, this place is a frequent fraternity stop, but the food is good, bartenders are fast considering the crowd, and if you're a b-ball fan you might end up in conversation with a player or two. You're not going to find too many place along Franklin St. that don't have a young crowd. If you're looking for a place with a buzz, blonde haired beauties and tasty blonde ale, this is it.
