I mean for a taco, the food wasn't bad. Was tasty. But I am still trying to figure out where the rest of it was. If I spend $6 on a ""deal"" I don't expect one little taco (yes the tacos were the size of a regular taco at taco bell) and a small serving of tortilla chips and salsa and a drink. For that price they should be giving you 3 tacos. Still trying to also figure out why it took so long to make that tiny little thing.

I have been going to this restaurant for about 8 years now and I NEVER get tired of it! The staff comes and goes which is typical for an inexpensive restaurant so some of them are great and some aren't. Overall they are friendly enough but I could care less because I love the food so much. It's cheap - my meal is usually around $6 which is a ""Dillo Deal"" = taco, chips & queso, drink. The chips are delicious but I definitely come here for the queso. It varies in consistency and spice but is always great. The chips are wonderful, not too salty. I always get a chicken soft taco which is delicious but not huge (don't expect a Qdoba sized burrito). I also get the nachos or buffalo wings sometimes which are both great! Also - get a strawberry frozen margarita, yummmm and different from anywhere else. Overall I think that the fact that I usually get it at least once a week and I've been going there 8+ years means you get the point. It's cheap, fast and DELICIOUS!

My friends and I come up to Raleigh for Veteran's day celebration and stuck around the following day for lunch.

I served 3 tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. 2/3 tours I came under direct fire and listened to the locals tell me how much they hated Americans and our forced Democracy. I spent about 8 months each in Afghanistan and Iraq, eating MRE and rations for weeks at a time if we were forward deployed.

During December of 2004 my ship was one of the first on scene for the Humanitarian relief in Sri Lanka after the largest Tsunami ever recorded killed hundreds of thousands in the Indian Ocean area. We flew off all the food we had stored and were down to rations and MRE for almost a month. We weren't allowed to fish since the waters had become soiled and contaminated by the dying bodies of the locals floating like flotsam on it's way to hell.

All that being said, I would rather be eating MRE and Navy powdered egg rations again rather than eat the food from Armadillo Grill.

I remember getting audited one year and the IRS made me jump through so many hoops, I swore I would get a CPA to do my taxes from now on. The auditor made me feel like I couldn't read ""simple"" IRS directions and to call him ""short tempered"" would be an understatement.\r
Then there was the time I got pulled over on I-440 by the state trooper for going just a ""bit"" too fast. The trooper was already having a bad day, apparent from his 5 o'clock shadow at 11am, and what smelled like cigarettes and broken dreams. It was a rather unpleasant event.\r
Despite all of that, I think I would rather be getting a speeding ticket while being audited, and getting news that my dog just died - as opposed to eat at Armadillo Grill ever again.\r
Before anyone accuses me of a ""bad incident,"" and that I doth protest too much; I must state for the record that I have been there thrice. I figured more than one try was necessary. \r
I ordered Chili and I asked for ""hot sauce."" The cook, pointed over to the salsa bar and said ""it's over there."" So I went over to check and there was no hot sauce. I came back over to the bar area and said ""excuse me,"" and he half looked up at me as if he were a priest staring down at his fallen flock. I said there was no hot sauce over there and he SNAPS ""That's all we have,"" then WALKS AWAY before I say anything else. So I go up to the front counter and ask if there was a suggestion card I could leave for management. One of the manager tells me that there is not, but he would listen to what I have to say. I suggested they carry hot sauce, and he responds that the restaurant does not carry anything that is not ""fresh."" I ask him if he made his own salt and distilled his own wine in the back. Perhaps he had a fermenting process where he made all his own vinegar and that all the liquor was also ""fresh."" He responded with ""those products are suppose to be that way,"" of which I said ""so is hot sauce."" He said he would tell management of my suggestion with a smile that was more condensing than sincere. \r
\r
Now let me tell you about the food. The Chili I spoke of, it was claimed to be ""hot,"" and neither definition of the word could come close to describing the product I was presented to eat. Luke warm would be an appropriate description and I've eat ginger bread cookies that had more of a kick than this chili. \r
\r
You'll have a more pleasant experience dealing with the chain restaurant than you would at this training ground for Hell's receptionist. \r

They act like they are doing some strenuous activity to get me a pack of sour cream from the fridge below! They don't think twice of getting an attitude and having a smart comment as well. Good luck getting the fatass bartender from leaning on the wall to get you a drink! The food isn't good enough for me to go back and deal with such poor customer service!

I was thrilled when we got an Armadillo Grill in Raleigh after eating at the one in Carrboro when I lived in Chapel Hill. It's as yummy as ever and usually very crowded, particularly at lunch. The ingredients are fresh and flavorful and service is fast.

Armadillo Grill has hands down my favorite cheese dip in the area. It is spicy and a little hot, just the perfect side dish to any Mexican meal. The tacos are made fresh (you can watch them press out the tortilla's in a machine), and so is all of their food. Best of all, since they are down near the bars, they are open late for that post bar snack.

I'll give it to them--it's a great location, and it's pretty clean with some cool decor, but that's about where the pro's stop. The food is mediocre at best. I don't know how you can mess up something as simple as Queso dip, but they've managed to do that. Do NOT eat the enchiladas. Prepare for some real disappointment if you do. The big dark haired male bartender is a TERRIBLE BRUTE! I ordered a Long Island Ice Tea, and he served it to me in little margarita glass, not the standard pint glass, but I still paid the standard $10+ cost. I don't see what all the hoopla about this restaurant is all about. Save your money and go to Dos Taquitos for some real Mexican food, or just head over to Taco Bell.

Pros: Cool looking restaurant, but you don't go to a restaurant to look at stuff

Cons: Not much parking, bad food, confusing ordering with terrible service--don't hold your breath for them to explain how to order

.

This is not a full service restaurant and does not bill itself as such. You wait in line and order you food just as you would any other fast food place. That being said I've never had a bad experience and I've been eating here about once a week since moving downtown about 3 years ago. The staff is friendly and parking is available next to the building. They have an excellent selection of tequilas and have lots of different margarita options. I'm a fan of the Horny Margarita made with Sauza Hornitos. If your looking for a more upscale restaurant or authentic Mexican cuisine I'd suggest trying somewhere else. I think Jabarra shoud be open at the Depot soon.

You DO NOT have to be a YANKEE to recognize that THIS PLACE IS AWFUL!!!!\r
\r
EVERY SINGLE TIME i go to the Raleigh location they screw my order up! I only go there because there aren't many vegetarian options near my work, but now i don't think i can deal w/ their incompetence at all anymore. Oh, and don't think the management will be of any assistance either. The manager I spoke w/ didn't seem to care at all that his staff couldn't seem to get an order right to save their lives, and did absolutely NOTHING to fix the situation.\r
\r
And $5.25 or so for a Bean Burrito slightly larger than a regular than a soft taco?!! You gotta be kidding me!\r
\r
I don't have high expectations for chain restaurants, but this place couldn't meet the lowest of expectations. \r
\r
TOTALLY BLOWIN' IT!!!!

Cons: Lets just say i listed the only Pro.

We went downtown with the purpose of just strolling and enjoying a nice night. After walking by Armadillo twice we couldn't resist the smell and we went in-even though we were not hungry. The food was good, staff friendly, and I loved the tables by the windows so that we could still enjoy the night and our meal.

Sorry, NOT at all recommended! Overpriced. You have to serve yourself. That's right, no service at all. Food was crappy. Dirty restaurant. Frankly I was afraid of germs because I feared the food was old. Not even cheap beverages. Almost no one was there at dinnertime. I really can't believe some people like this place (unless the owners put in reviews).\r
\r
The woman who took the order was disinterested and never even looked at me. The guys who I got the food from seemed very nice.\r
\r
I'm afraid the fine people of Raleigh are missing out on good mexican or Tex-Mex food. Another restaurant we tried based on reviews was below average, but this place was by far the worst. We love Mexican, cook it, and know everything about it, especially Tex-Mex. We have yet to find decent Mexican food in raleigh. We are not picky eaters either. We just haven't found any---yet!

Pros: The huge brown critter under the table was dead. This system won't let me use the word but Orkin needs to be called.

Cons: Every aspect.

Good place to go when you don't want to sit in a 3 star, or better, restaurant for a 1/2 hour before your food comes. I didn't want italian, steak, or hamburger. And its having a parking lot right off of Glenwood Ave suited me just fine.

Im so tired of yankees writing reviews of restaurants. Any restaurant outside of new york is sub-standard because its outside of new york. I want to bring something from new york and serve it at one of these restaurants just to prove a point. 99% of people say a restaurant is good but the ""yankee"" just has to rear his obnoxious nose every time...YOU chose to move here so deal with our food or leave. i95 goes both ways!!!

Love the food, but there is a room for improvement. I've been eating here since the inception and I have to be honest that the cheese dip is always inconsistent. I eat here 2-3 times a week and sometimes it is runny like water (which defeats the point of being called a dip) and sometimes it is too thick (almost like a casserole.) It is best when it served in between the two. Also, the quality of the tomatoes in your pico is poor. Most of the time, they are not rip enough-yellowish green and it simply doesn't taste good. You might as well serve raw tomatoes on a plate because that is most of the consistency in your pico. I asked once if you could get better tomatoes and the answer was no. I have a friend in the produce business who agrees with me that the tomatoes are poor quality and he/she stated that it doesn't require too much effort or money on your part for improvement. Just thought you might want to know.

Pros: Chicken tacos are yummy, queso is great when it's the perfect consistency

Cons: Poor quality tomatoes-never rip enough-tend to be yellow/green/white in the pico-needs to be improved

This is not a place I will return to. It is self-service (hello Char-grill) and is overpriced, mediocre Southwest (and Mexican) food. My biggest complaint? There was no sour cream, and the chicken wings came with about a 1 tablespoon serving of ranch dressing. To get more, I was told I had to reorder and pay at the register. Of course there was a line, but I waited and paid $.75 for 2 ranch dressings and a sour cream. That should give you a feel for my experience! By the time I made it back to the table my date had finished her meal and mine was cold.\r
\r
Aside fromt that...the food is ""fast-food"" quality, with higher prices and smaller portions than taco bell.

This was my first time at the Armadillo Grill (apparently there are several locations), and I will be back again. The ordering arrangements are a bit different, but there was someone at the door to explain it all (you essentially become your own waiter). The building is open with plenty of booths that fit 5 comfortably. Their food was warm and prompt -- I particularly enjoyed their queso and chips. Perhaps next time we will try their large patio. Overall, we had a great experience.

The yummiest steak soft tacos around! Armadillo rocks. Because I started going to Armadillo as a UNC student and was used to plastic cups and paper plates -- that doesn't bother me. But I can understand how some might think that the ""presentation"" could use some work. That's just a way to keep it cheap! And, by the way, you're getting more food than the paper plates make it appear. Two soft tacos are PLENTY. The new ""Dillo Deals"" are perfect -- since you can now get a single serving of their totally addictive queso dip with your meal. Soooooo gooooooood..... And the outdoor seating is perfect for a nice day.

First let me say their food is excellent, but the Wake Forest site is being run by a bunch of teenagers who are LOW on service. They get the food orders wrong and for gosh sake if someone doesnt want beans as a side at least offer more Rice on the side! And No I am not making a joke when I ask for that.

Service needs to improve or it sHello to the new and cheaper Taco Bell down the road or to the Los Marqueyes up the road which is Cheaper.

It soooo good. The cheese dip is the best in town. Ckn tacos have the best flavor-great marinade. Ckn nachos are my favorite. Staff is cool, friendly and not over the top friendly as other Tex-Mex places (Welcome to M...)--it's totally cheesy and the ckn is dodgy.

Having just moved from the Southwest, we went to Armadillo grill expecting great tex-mex, but found only mediocre food at best. The dishes were ordinary, portions were small (served on plastic no less!) Decor was uninspired and the overall experience wasn't enjoyable and definitely not worth repeating.

Hands down the best chicken nachos I've ever had. And it's a lot. Two people can split an order of nachos. Everything tastes so fresh, especially the soft tacos. They have the best guacamole I've ever had, I could just eat that! I frequent the 'Dill grill often, its great, cheap food!

that's it best tex mex, great everything, staff, service, margarita, they even have rogue. what a place you cant go wrong with the dillo.

Pros: fast, tequila selection, service

Cons: , none, none

.

Being new in town we checked this place out for dinner. The margaritas were great, the bartender was great, but the food could stand some improvement.

I ordered a chicken burrito, and ended up with what tasted more like a bean burrito. The food was more american than mexican. The cheese dip is great however, but even that could use a little kick.

If you visit Armadillo Grill, please try the chips with cheese dip; you'll not want to waste a drop of the dip. The soft tacos are always a good choice--either the chicken soft taco or the chili/bean/cheese soft taco. Great place for friends to meet; friendly staff; very reasonably priced.

The first time i ventured into the 'Dillo was for a Swim Team party and i was so impressed that i returned for the remainder of my stay at Broughton High School. The Nachos and fajitas are dazzling! You HAVE to try them. Some of the entrees can get a little pricy after you add all of the condiments but if you stick simple the menu is fantasitic.

This place is fast and friendly with great food. I have been here about 5 times, and haven't been disappointed yet. Great burritos and nachos. Well positioned TVs are great for Sat. afternoon ACC football. Nice environment, no hassle.

The restaurant looks ok. Thats just about all the good things I can say about it.

The service was generally good. But one waitress thought she was doing us a favor, and seemed to be irritated that we went in and interrupted her saturday evening newspaper reading.

Dont even try beer that you havent heard of. THey serve you lemonade that has gone bitter. Saving grace was they had Yeungling. but not pitcher. You have to go to the bar for every glass of Yeungling.

Finally, the food: The worst, stalest, most horrible mexican food in the whole world. The bean paste has hardened like clay. I could not find mor ethan a few tiny bits of beef in the beef enchilada.
