Long, long, long, story short I called Linda McLain to say I was in labor on a sunday at 4:30pm and she said she would meet us at the hospital immediately. SHE NEVER SHOWED UP TO DELIVER OUR BABY!!!! I was in labor on friday afternoon and they had to call her at home and she said send me home. At the hospital 2 days later I was 2 weeks overdue and had no fluid left so my baby was suffocating from lack of oxygen from laying on her cord inside me. So the nursed kept calling DR.LINDA MCLAIN AND SHE NEVER SHOWED!!!! They flipped me all night to get the baby off the cord so her heart rate would come back up. Finally, at 9am Monday morning June 27, 2005 Dr. Lewison came in to make her scheduled rounds and found out I was there and rushed me in for emergency c section since I never progressed to deliver. DR. MCLAIN CLAIMS NO ONE EVER CALLED HER FROM THE HOSPITAL, BUT I CALLED HER FROM HOME AND SHE HAD NO ANSWER TO THAT. SHE LET ME SUFFER FOR 20 HOURS IN LABOR. WE WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MY BABY SUFFERED. :( SHE IS A TERRIBLE PERSON. I HAVE THOUGHT MANY TIMES THAT I MAY SUE OR AT LEAST PROTEST AT HER OFFICE.

Crystal- the office wasn't just "ugly" but it was dirty. You should be able to go to the doctor & feel comfortable.

After my appointment they had sent me a bill in full because they filed under my old insurance. I went to the office & showed them in my paper chart that I had shown them, and filled out all my new ins. info. and they said it was their mistake & they would fix it.

I received another statement a month later, because they still hadn't fixed the problem.

They just seem very unorganized.

I did have an experience my first time with a name mix up. I am having twins and they have been great. I call they get me in right away. For those that cant afford private insurance or who have jobs that dont offer it this clinic is heaven. To the women that have never been in the hospitals clinic go and see how nasty and unprfessional they are. At that clinic being pregnant isnt a priority. Just to get an appointment at tht clinic at hopital you must be up at 7am and be the one of the first five just to be seen. So cape fear is great compared to others all of the doctors and pa have been great to me. Dont judge a book by its cover REMEMBER A BUM CAN BE A MILLIONAIRE,BUT YOU THREW HIM A DOLLAR AND YOU NEEDED MORE THEN HIM. the point is the service has nothing to do with the look its the care.

I have been to this doctor for 3 annual exams & have seen 3 different doctors.
1. Saw a p.a. who was great
2. Saw a p.a. who was NUTS, totally creeped me out & asked to never see her again
3. Saw Rachel Mcclean and she is GREAT if you do happen to go, see her

Yes the environment is awful, they put NO money into the waiting room which makes it seem dirty. The employees could use a little more professional etiquette, like one of the stations that every patient goes to to have their bp checked is littered with the nurses personal photos etc.

I have noticed a huge difference since they were bought out by novant (i think?) The front office has got better about returning calls, etc.

So in a nutshell good Drs, but they could really use a professional makeover and new waiting room considering you will in all honesty be out there for at least 30 minutes.

Just an FYI, Carolina OB/GYN is a Novant physician office also. So for those of you that spoke out about Cape Fear being sold to Novant and it going down hill and to go else where, it's the excat opposite. It was bought to improve it, as well as Carolina OB/GYN but it is doing very well!

I really didn't want to believe all of these reviews. I had one good experience with this practice when I had an annual physical done. I had just moved to the area and didn't know where to go so I went there. The NP was very nice and friendly and helpful about getting pregnant when I was ready (I was getting married in a few months).

This place is a nightmare. In order to speak with a human you have to call and leave atleast 3 messages or sit on hold for 10 minutes. Once you get to the office, expect to wait atleast 35 minutes after your scheduled appointment, especially if its "after hours." The staff openly talks about other patients and there is a total lack of privacy. The doctor, Linda Mc Clain, told me she found pre-cancerous cells and then proceded to blame it completely on me, saying and I quote "lets, just say NUNS don't get cancer like this." She is ridiculously inappropriate and cold. If you don't mind your condition being gossipped about by the receptionists and a total lack of bedside mannor, then Cape Fear is for you. If not, try Glen Meade.

I've been with Cape Fear OB/GYN since 2001, they've delivered all three of my beautiful babies.

Some of my favorite doctors in the practice have come and gone, but I've always been pleased with the care I've received from everyone on staff.

I didn't give this practice five stars because they do occasionally have long waits. However, that's my one and only complaint about them.

My first pregnancy resulted in a c-section. When I became pregnant with my second child, I had their full support when I expressed my desire to try for a vbac. The second pregnancy also resulted in a c-section, and when I cried with disappointment, my doctor cried with me. She really did care!

At the end of both my second and third pregnancies, when I told the doctors that I didn't want internal exams, as I found them to be intrusive and useless (because as I learned from experience with my first child, one can walk around dilated to 4 cm for WEEKS and not go into labor - what's the point?), my opinion was respected and I never had to deal with an internal in those last few weeks until I was in the hospital about to give birth.

I was always given any information I asked for, and my questions were always answered thoroughly and truthfully.

Bedside manner - outstanding. From the doctors, and especially the nurses. During my third pregnancy, when we discovered a subchorionic hemorrhage in the first trimester, and I was beside myself with worry, the nurse tending to me lent her personal experience (being a mom of three herself) and offered a listening ear for anytime I wanted to call and talk about it or had a question. It just doesn't get any better than that.

I'm not having any more babies, but I will continue to go to this practice for my GYN needs for as long as I'm in the area, and I recommend them to everyone.

My first appointment at Cape Fear was not too bad. I just moved into the area and just picked this practice out of the phone book.In my first appointment I found them to be a bit cold and unemotional but I didn't care much since I was just going to be going 1 per year. Second appointment came and I waited in their hot boring waiting room for over an hour. Then I waited in the exam room for an hour and then the exam was another hour. I arrived at 3pm for my annual appointment and left at 6:30pm. No apologies or acknowledgement of the wait. My third annual exam was the worst yet. I was told there was blood in my urine and that I had a heart murmur. The doctor seemed depressed and like she was not having a good day. She didn't give me any other info except to see a cardiologist. She basically scared me to death and I left there hysterical and hyperventilating. I saw a cardiologist who put me through many tests only to say the murmur was so slight it wasn't an issue or anything to panic about. That's something the OB/GYN doc should have told me. She looked like it was just going to be a grim prognosis for me. Then I got a letter saying she was gone from the practice. I will be looking for some where else to continue my care. The staff is made up mostly of robots just going through the motions. I don't know how they are still open.

Yes, the staff is nice enough. But after sitting in the waiting room for over an hour, then sitting naked for an hour, then they didn't get my labs ordered correctly - AGAIN, I will NOT be back!! Went to Carolina OB/GYN and had a great experience. Was seen within 10 minutes. The doctor was genuinely concerned about my well-being. I highly recommend.

I was a patient for the past several years until I just received a letter in the mail that Cape Fear is now Novant?!
On the bottom are the list of providers only 2 MD's and 2 NP's.( that's one doc on call every other night...sleep deprived, cranky and in charge of my care...scary)
Where did Dr Eva Tollefsen, Dr Cynthia Pierson and Barbara Klein, NP go? Dr Mclain seems unable to keep ANY doctors for long, no wonder she sold the practice. Don't ask at Cape Fear where your provider went because they won't tell you and good luck getting your medical records too!
So after searching I found that Barbara Klein NP is at Carolina OB/GYN and Dr. Pierson is at Glen Meade OB/GYN....both still in Wilmington!! Dr Tollefsen is in Charlotte,NC. Hope this helps anyone trying to find 'their' provider.

wow! i am shocked to have found this web page today and was compelled to write a review even though i no longer even live in the area. i have to say i was at another huge obgyn practice and switched to cape fear obgyn at 24 weeks due to my unhappiness at this other practice. i have to say i expect more than most and the dr's at cape fear were nothing but personable and more than competent. both of my children were born while i was at cape fear and the dr's were terrific! linda mcclain is the best...she has a great reputation in wilmington and i really felt completely comfortable with her. she delivered my son in 2001--the delivery and follow up care were excellent!my only reason for not giving cape fear 5 stars is because it wasn't always easy to obtain an appointment. unlike most cities, wilmington is surging with new people and i would prefer to go to a thriving obgyn office and wait for a good dr., vs calling another office to only get right in...if they aren't busy something is wrong from my experience!

I had no problems with the staff-they seemed nice enough. I really did want to try them out and prove the other 8 reviews wrong. That was until they put a form in front of us stating that if there was an emergency, we would have to accept a blood transfusion. When we declined (as a patient has the right) they coldly refused further treatment and told us that we had thirty days to find a new doctor, and that they would not refer us to anyone for fear of liability.

Liability? There is more liability with using tainted blood than with ever not using it. Ask any doctor worth her pay, and she will tell you that the way to go is bloodless. Only doctors that are willing to stay in the 20th century will make you take blood because they are not qualified to work on you. The recovery time is 30% shorter by using non-blood alternatives, the risk of acquiring AIDS or Hepatitis is 0%, and the cost is much less (did you know they charge around $1500 for a pint of DONATED blood?). All-in-all, this doctor needs to join the 21st century. What's next? Are we going back to blood letting...? Abe Lincoln's doctors thought that that was the only way to go.
If you don't mind a risk of: AIDS, Hepatitis, transfusion of wrong type of blood, longer recover, and higher costs, then by all means go to Cape Fear OB/GYN. We don't have to worry about it, since we got kicked out.

I have had three babies with Cape Fear OB/GYN and have NEVER had the problems I see on this web review. I think there are always time when you may run across an unhappy employee when on the phone but most times these people leave anyway. I don't think the office should be blamed for individual people. I had wonderful and caring care during my pregnancies, I never once felt deprived. the doctors were all excellent and were there for me whenever i needed them. It is a shame only the people with bad experiences are reviewing this practice, I had to speak up. The staff gave me an enormous amount of information and just because you think they never told you something there is the realization that they probably did but you just forgot. Pregnancy is a hard time and emotions are overwhelming, these people deal with overwhelmed people all day long and even in my third pregnancy they still went above and beyond to make sure i was told everything. My babies are healthy and delivered with no problems, thanks to the caring and skilled hands of these doctors.

My experience at Cape Fear OBGYN has been extremely unsatisfactory. I was not seen two times in a row when scheduled for an appointment I waited over 3 hours each time (about 2 hours in the waiting area and then one hour NAKED under a sheet in the examining room!!) only to be told by the doctor that I had been mis-scheduled. To top it all off, these two appointments were check-ups for pre-cancer so I was not seen for over 6 months due to their error. It was obvious that the doctor just did not want to see me - she told me "You should be fine - let's just schedule you for a later date." After the second "mis-schedule" I decided to go elsewhere - maybe I am "fine" but I am not going to play games with cancer.

During my first pregnancy, I was a patient at Cape Fear OB/GYN, but have since switched to a better group. I found out at my routine 12 week appointment that I had a miscarriage. The office staff was comforting at first, they scheduled me to come back for a pre-op appointment later that day to discuss getting a D & C. When I came in to the office, I had just gotten myself pulled together when the receptionist asked me why I was there in front of a waiting room full of people. I explained that I had a miscarriage and burst into tears. After having the D & C, I went to a follow-up appointment at which an internal exam was not even preformed. I was told that the pathology was normal and I could try again in 3 months. They sent me on my way. I called the office a few days later becuase I felt so severly depressed and didn't know how to make it better. There is no option to speak with a person when calling the office so I left a message. I explained that I was extremely depressed and I wanted to get a recommendation of a therapist . Two days later, I had to call the office again because I had heard NOTHING back from office staff (luckily, I was not suicidal). I left another message and another. Finally, the nurse called me back to let me know that they didn't have any recommendations. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. While I found some of the office staff to be polite, informative, and friendly, the practitioners are unprofessional, even rude and not sympathetic to the human side of the service they provide.

Ok...I used to go to another OB & honestly I should have stayed their but could not due to insurance purposes. The front desk has always been nice to me not so much the lady on the side making another appt for you.(she seems really unhappy)Then they really don't spend much time with you. I can make a recommendation to go to Carolina OBGYN Dr. Vogel is the best & so is Vicki Brown when Im done with my pregnancy I'm going back!!!!

I had real concerns and questions that were completely dismissed because I had gone to a Doctor before that was friends with the doctor I saw at cape fear.
Not only that but the doctor I saw tried to give me a guilt trip about what I felt was best for me! I was told "I cant believe you would prefer a more risky procedure whern you already have a child to think about" (over having the 3 (THREE) very uncomfortable procedures they were recommending!!!
RUDE.
IMPERSONAL.
UNPROFESSIONAL!
I felt it was a total waste of my 50.00 co pay!

The only reason I am giving them a satisfactory review is because I have not delivered yet. I am 34 weeks pregnant and am very displeased with how impersonal this office is. I couldn't agree with the other reviews more (except for the one giving it four stars, who mentions a doctor that does not even practice here). They do not give you any information unless you ask, and since this is my first pregnancy I do not know all the questions to ask. I did not even meet a doctor until I was over thirty weeks pregnant. The ladies up front are not the nicest either, and do not allow for very much patient input when scheduling appointments. At my appointment today I waits for over an hour to be seen. What should have taken less than thirty minutes took an hour and a half (measuring my uterus, checking the babies heart rate, and my blood pressure). They've also called me three days before an appointment and made me reschedule, except for it takes two weeks in advance (at the latest) to schedule a time that works for both the patient and doctor.
However, since I've mentioned a lot of their drawbacks I will say a few things I like about this office. When I first got pregnant they gave me a helpful pregnancy book as well as some pregnancy magazines. They've also given me informative print outs for each trimester. They also have a sheet with medicines that I can and cannot take during my pregnancy, which is definitely helpful.
If the doctor's visits were more informative I do not think that this office would get nearly as bad of reviews. They should tell you things like you should not lie on your back after five months. I'm not sure if the medical care is any better at other local Ob's, but I'm sure other offices are no more impersonal than this one.

My husband and I went for our first appointment (this was my very first pregnancy). They did nothing that my family doctor said they would... there was no pelvic/pap exam, I only gave them an urine sample and had the vaginal ultrasound. We found out the baby had stopped development at 7wks and I should've been 11wks along. I only saw nurses, they never even gave me the option of speaking to a doctor, they just rushed me out the door and told me they'd call with my D&C appt. Over that wkend I decided I wanted blood work to be sure, so that Monday they call with the D&C appt info and I tell them to cancel and requested blood work. I was told that required a doctor's order so I said get one and call me back ASAP so I can have it done... that was Feb 18, 2008 I spoke to them... today is March 6, 2008 and do you think I have heard back from that office? NO! They never called to see how I was, if I miscarried or anything. Talk about worthless!

I found the medical appointments to be adequate but impersonal and short. You are not given any information unless you ask.pregnancy is a very emotional time and they did not seem responsive to questions and their was no warmth whatsoever.I definately think the practice is too big for them to handle.

I went here for the first few months of my pregnancy and it was terrible. I was never seen by an actual doctor, they didn't tell me that my insurance was not covering my pregnancy (which was totally stressful), they kept changing their minds about how pregnant I actually was (either 4 or 6 months BIG DIFFERENCE), and then told me that I was no longer allowed to come to the doctors office to be treated because they had found opiates in my system. I have never done nor would I do drugs during my pregnancy or ever for that matter. If you want good care for you and your baby DON'T GO HERE. This is supposed to be a wonderful time of growth and life and they made me so stressed and frantic because of having to find a new doctor in the middle of my pregnancy, wait for Medicaid to do it, and then they wouldn't even talk to me over the phone about getting my records transfered to my new doctor. Their practice is obviously too big for them to handle.

I have to agree with many of the other negative reviews on this practice. I was pregnant in 07 and found that I never received timely responses when I left message for the nurses or the doctors there. I waited for almost 2 weeks for a referral that should have been a priority because of our situation and when they finally did return my call it was only after I had left a message with records saying that I wanted to come by to pick up a copy of my file because I was switching ob's. I have since changed doctors because I didn't feel comfortable going into another pregnancy wondering if they had my best interests in mind. It seems like they see too many patients and the staff does not seem concerned with efficiency or pleasantness when you go for appointments. Pregnancy is a very emotional time and those suffering miscarriages and already high risk pregnancies would not feel comfortable at this office.
