Saleswoman and manager Kathie is a sweet person and I've enjoyed talking with her on occasion over the years. I've bought a few pieces of jewelry under her guidance and it was a good experience each time. I almost did not leave a review

My precious 2-yr old son knocked my laptop onto the floor and the headphone jack that was plugged in snapped off IN the computer. The solution from the computer repair places that I looked into (3 of them) was to replace the circuit board at a cost north of $100.

Two other jewelers were unable to remove the plug, but when I took it to Grimballs they smiled and were interested in the challenge. Kathie Van Atta took the computer to the back and a few minutes later she emerged with my computer in great shape and the tic-tac sized little nub safely removed.

If I wasn't a poverty stricken student I would have bought something right there because I was so grateful. These guys happily went way out of their way to help me out and didn't even charge me for their work. I know it didn't take them much time, but this level of service won a customer for life (I have since been back to buy something).

These guys will really take care of you!

Why do we take our business to Berkeley, simple! I needed my class ring re-sized and took it to him. Instead of taking the job and charging me $150, he told me I had a lifetime warranty that included re-sizing. Mailed it to Jostens yesterday! If I hadn't bought it 43 years ago, I might have remembered that warranty. :-)

I've worked with these folks since the 1980's when they were down on West Franklin St. They have always tried to provide excellent service, and first quality jewelry. They've got a lovely assortment of both custom and estate jewelry, and a terrific repair and fabrication staff. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to my closest friends!

Bought my engagement ring from Grimballs. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Staff sent me high quality pictures of the ring choices and returned phone calls in a timely fashion.

Things I did not like: Would have wanted a certificate and documentation that the diamonds in the ring were not conflict diamonds. The prices are a little more than other jewelry stores (i.e. Kay's, Zales, etc.)

Overall I would recommend doing business with this store.

Much to my husband's chagrin, I am a jewelry lover. I frequent jewelry stores in every new city I visit and often browse jewelry designers online.

Grimball's unique jewelry speaks for itself. You will not see yourself around town or any in other city. They carry one of a kind pieces that are absolutely beautiful.

The friendly staff make you feel right at home. I finally found people who like jewelry as much as I do. Stop by and ask for Regina. You won't regret it!!!!

I have been going to Grimball Jewelers for at least a few years+ now, and have always found the selection both interesting and lovely. Whether I am looking for a modern piece, or estate piece, I am always impressed with the selection and fine quality of the jewelry. I have also always had consistently excellent customer service, whether I am searching for a piece for myself or as a gift. It continues to be one of my favorite jewelry stores hands down! I would highly recommend Grimball Jewelers for both the excellent personalized and helpful customer service, as well as the fine quality of their jewelry.

My fiancee and I custom-made my engagement ring at Grimball and we had a fantastic experience. Regina could not have been nicer in working with us, especially considering the several visits that myself, my mother and my fiancee made to the store. She helped us create a beautiful, unique ring that incorporated a family stone while also fitting into our price range. She kept us updated throughout the process and special-ordered stones to be the perfect fit and match for what we were looking for. When one stone had been measured (at a different store) as an incorrect size, she kindly had the stone properly sized for us and took the extra time and care to ensure that the matching stone would be flawless. \r
We loved working with her/Grimball and, though we don't live in Chapel Hill, would happily work with her again. We definitely recommend Grimball as a wonderful experience!

I bought my wife's engagement ring and both of our wedding bands--they had an amazing selection, friendly staff, and great follow-through and communication. After the wedding, I found that my own wedding band was a little too tight, and they arranged for a free replacement with the maker to get a ring a half-size bigger--at no cost to me. Good luck getting that kind of service at a mall shop! \r
\r
Echoing another review below, I'm also shocked to see a negative review for Grimball Jewlers. In my experience, their service and pricing was fantastic. I was so happy with my experience that I referred my best man to them, and he just got his engagement ring and bands there as well.

Pros: Friendly, knowledgable staff

My husband and I went to Grimballs to purchase my wedding ring. The sales person was very helpful and showed us a selection of rings within our price range. We decided on a beautiful designer ring that had to be ordered and altered slightly to use one of my stones. When I explained that I had to have the ring by a certain date because of a trip to Europe she made every effort with the designer to ensure that it would be ready.

The customer service could not have been more pleasant. The ring arrived a week earlier than I expected and it is beautiful.

Also, during this time I had two rings altered at the store. The in store jewelers did an excellent job with both. The rings were ready in a week and more then met my expectations.

If anyone asks me to recommend a jeweler in Chapel Hill I would not hesitate to send them to Grimballs.

After receiving great customer service at Grimball Jewelers, I decided to come to Citysearch to give some positive props. Imagine my surprise to find a few less than flattering reviews.\r
\r
I can only speak from my experience (of course), but the view from here is that everybody affiliated with the store was both professional and personal. \r
\r
My fiance and I went to Grimball Jewelers with a picture of a ring that we liked. Unlike other jewelers we had already visited, they were able to identify the style and history of the ring and produced a close replica of what we were seeking. They worked with us to set a special diamond from our family and the results were absolutely stunning.\r
\r
To say they went the extra mile for us would be an understatement.\r
\r
I would recommend Grimball Jewelers to all my friends (and to you, humble reader - lol). \r
\r
Methinks other Citysearch reviewers of this business swallowed some sour grapes somewhere (lol).\r
\r
Our experience was, has been, and is - very positive. \r

If you want to know which review to believe, believe this one!\r

Thanks to all the folks at Grimball Jewelers for making our experience so great!\r

Pros: Great Customer Service; Knowledgeable and Helpful Staff

Cons: closed on Mondays

Their customer service is so terrible that I wish I could give them zero stars instead of just 1. My significant other and I went into Grimball's last week to purchase a promise ring. We have my grandmother's diamond but the setting we had seen at Grimball's that we both fell in love with was $3,800. So we decided to buy a promise ring now, save up while we plan the wedding and buy my 'real' ring right before the wedding. We explained all of this as soon as we entered the store, as well as our $500-600 budget. We also explained that I wanted something simple with a gemstone. The saleslady was extremely rude and condescending the entire time. She consistently showed us things over twice our price range, claiming that they were only ""slightly"" above. She made what should have been a joyous experience into a horrible one. I found a loose yellow sapphire I liked and they said they could order a pre-made mounting from a catalog. When they left us on our own to sift through the catalog, we decided to leave. We decided that we didn't want to buy the ring there because it would just remind us of the negative way we were treated. I shouldn't have to be treated like a 2nd class citizen because I want a less expensive piece of jewelry. After we left, I sent an e-mail to the owner explaining the situation. I received no reply.

I'm sure Grimball's can afford to lose a $500 sale. But you'd think they'd at least care a little bit about losing a $4,000 sale.

My diamond wedding band lost a diamond. We had purchased it in FL, but we heard good things about Grimball so we went there to get the estimate for repair. They provided an estimate and faxed it to our insurance. About 2 weeks later, they came back to us and told us the ring could not simply be fixed due to the way the ring had been made. They told us really the only option was to have the ring recast around the diamonds. This was going to cost around $900. We decided we didn't want to put this much money into recreating the ring and asked them for other options. They didn't have much to offer and my husband finally suggested returning the yellow gold anniversary band he had bought me there less than a year ago and getting a white gold one. They decided to do this by sending the ring back to the manufacturer to set those diamonds into a white gold setting which would be a cost close to what insurance had paid based on their original estimate. After they finally got the ring back, which took almost 2 months, they sent it to another customer ""as they had ordered a virtually identical ring"". I'm now without my wedding band (but I have the remaining diamonds from it), without my anniversary band that my husband bought me last year, and I don't have a new wedding band. \r
Throughout all of this, we've had to repeatedly call to get updates about where things stand. We call and get promises of phone calls back in 10 minutes that are never returned, we get excuses about why we weren't kept up to date about the status of our ring, and we get inferred criticism about the quality of my original wedding ring. \r
I work in the customer service business and I can tell you this is not how to run a business. I might not have been so upset about any of this if they had just kept us informed instead of seemingly hiding things from us at every turn.\r
Grimball Jeweler has beautiful jewelery, but their service leaves a lot to be desired. We will be finding a new jeweler.

I bought my wedding band here. I wore it very carefully for only two weeks and then the jewels fell out. They promised to replace it right away. A month later it still hadn't come in... finally they called that it had come in and I dropped everything and ran over there to find out that they ordered the wrong setting, but hoped I would take this ring anyway. I waited another week to hear from them if they had re-ordered or not... nothing. I called to check and was told maybe a couple of more weeks. It never came in. I finally asked for my money back. And finally got it back. I have been married for over two mos now and have only worn a band for the first two weeks. I am still searching for a band like I had and wanted.\r
Make sure you have a good warranty and pleanty of patience if you deal with this place.
