I recently had a new alternator put in my Mazda 626 at Frank's Repair. I had him replace an O2 sensor about a year ago, and it was relatively inexpensive. This time however he tried to charge me $250 for an AutoLite re-manufactured alternator!! Luckily, and inconveniently, he no longer takes credit cards and so I had to bring him a check the next day. Well I did my research and found AutoLite alternators for my Mazda are only $70 retail after core at any parts store that sells AutoLite. Well I called him out on it when I went to pay--he wouldn't produce his receipt and insisted he paid $180 after core. The problem here is that his desk was such a mess he must have forgot his receipts were all in a pile, with an "AutoLite import reman alternator" receipt on top, dated appropriately, for only $45 after core, obviously the one he put in my car. BUSTED!! He then told me he would cut me a $20 break on the previously $425 bill, but after he re-calculated it, it came out $2 more!! I really can't believe this guy, lmao! I wrote him a check for $400 and told him he won't see me again. I understand mechanics need to make a little money on parts to keep operating, but it's generally 30-50% more than they pay wholesale. Not only did this guy charge twice what the alternator retails for (that's 100% more) he was charging me an astounding 555% MORE than he purchased it for. This is absolute criminal price gouging and he should be shut down promptly.
