We have owned this center for over 20 years so not sure on one of the negative reviews how long ago it was from. The person seems to address that children get to choose whether they take a nap or not. Naps have always been encouraged but legally centers are not allowed to force or deny a child a nap. Food portions are made small enough that no one chokes on food so some food are cut in half allowing hungrier children to eat more and children who eat smaller amounts do not feel obligated to eat more than they want. As far as serving chips as part of the 4 food groups required for a main meal I'm a bit lost on this one. A main meal includes a source of protein such as cheese, meat or peanut butter, at least two servings from the fruit and vegetable category, bread and fluid milk. Our program as well as many other child care centers are monitored by the USDA for compliance in this area. This person also mentions the rules at the time(whenever that was?) changing all the time. Unfortunately from a child's perception it would be heard to understand what they thought was changing or not but of course everyone is entitled to their opinion(even me) Sugar & Spice has over the past 30 years had 3 different owners so we are not sure who these comments are being directed at. We love our daycare children like they were our own so it's hard to know what perception someone else may have of us as I'm not even sure if they addressed most of these issues with us as owners.

My son attended this daycare as a preschooler, and we were so so unhappy with it. The rules are constantly changing, the children are allowed to "choose" whether or not to nap (my son always "chose" not to, and then conked out exhausted every day when I picked him up at 5:00). I told them over and over again that he needed to nap, but they want the children to have "free expression," and aren't about to make any child do what they don't want to do.

Several times I stopped by at lunchtime and they were feeding each child 1/2 a hot dog or 1/2 a peanut butter sandwich with a few chips. Nutrition was definitely not on the agenda. So, needless to say, in addition to being exhausted, he was always starving when I picked him up.

My nieces attended there also, and my niece broke her arm and cried for over two hours before they bothered to call my sister and let her know something was wrong. You could take one look at the bend in her arm where it should not be and see that it was broken, but they just thought she was "cranky."

The final straw came when my extremely easygoing son had a meltdown one day at school. When I came to pick him up, they pretty much said that I couldn't possibly be expected to have a well-behaved child because I'm a single mom. This is a child that had never had a tantrum before in his life - it just wasn't in him.

I took him out that day and have been sooo glad I did. After the first week at his new daycare, he came home and said "mom, the rules never change here." Hmmm, why would a preschooler say that except that at Sugar and Spice he had no idea what the rules were even supposed to be. I can see why he finally had a meltdown.

Stay far far away from this daycare! I could tell many more stories from my experience and people I know, but alas, there is no more room.

Message from Sugar & Spice Child Care Center

A safe place for children to learn, discover and make friends. We are a small center licensed to care for 47 children. We currently enroll children ages 18 months through kindergarten. We have preschool Monday-Thursday mornings for children aged 3-6 years old. We love music at Sugar & Spice, do hands on activities and love the outdoors where science comes to life for us in nature. We are located in a great neighborhood for taking walk and are able to see day to day life happening around us. Feel free to stop by and check us out. Jim and Karen Decker have been the owners since 1988. Things have changed through the years in our society, but it's still fun to be a kid and we love learning everyday.
