I don?t know where these negative reviews are coming from. My family has been going here for years, every few months, and it?s my choice for celebrating Mothers? Day and my birthday. I was a bit worried when we walked in last night at 6:30

My wife and I travel from Portsmouth approx. 3 times monthly to Alexander's. We have been doing this for approx. 20 years. The service is outstanding - the "new" owner is most pleasant and gracious - she has also added fresh flowers to

I would love to be able to give this restaurant a good review because I believe in supporting locally owned, family-run businesses, but I have tried this place twice and been disappointed both times. The first time we were served tomato/mozzarella appetizer with unripe tomatoes and less than fresh cheese. The second time I ordered fried calamari for dinner and when I asked for some sauce to dip them in, I was told I would be charged extra for it! This is truly the only place I have ordered calamari and not received sauce with it. The linguine they serve with the meal is also not fresh and I would much rather have been offered a salad. The food took much longer to arrive at the table than it should have and I did not enjoy listening to the loud conversations of others while dining...they need to have music or something to provide some ambience. I think a few small changes could improve this place, but not sure if they want suggestions...

There are so many conflicting reviews on Alexanders, which I suppose is to be expected-however the majority rules-Alexander's Rocks. Yes, it is true that the managment has turned hands-Alex and his family left to the new female owner.. but the chef(s) My Father and Uncle (The Drake Boys) Have been there since 1980 and the food continues to be fantastic. Most of the waitresses have been there 10 plus years.. and the ones that WERE rude and obxious are noticebly gone now. So if you're in the mood for a great meal at a decent price.. you'll love Alexanders!

I can't understand the wide swing in reviews of Alexander's. Is someone trying to sabotage them?
Having frequented Alexander's for a very long time, I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal there. I have had many many exceptional dinners. Our children and their friends now continue to support this restaurant. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable (many have been there for years). The new owner has tried to keep the menu the same, and she has added new items. Their white pizza is phenomenal, their artichoke hearts rival any I have eaten anywhere and their veal dishes are delicious. Try it, you will not be disappointed. The value is also great. These aren't Portsmouth prices.

Alexanders, a once fine establishment has been driven into the ground by the new ownership. Though the food is the same for the most part, but the taste is different. The ingredients that are used are of a cheaper brand and just not the same as the fine quality that the previous ownership used. Also the cleanliness of the entire establishment has gone down the drains. Though the dining room may be presentable the kitchen is a whole different story. There is grime in places that there never used to be when the former owners were there. The refrigerators are not cleaned on a regular basis and the whole appearance of the kitchen is noticeably different. The new ownership also chased out the old waitstaff though there are a few still toughing it out against harsh rules and unfair treatment. The atmosphere has been shot down also. Alexanders used to be a fun family restaurant, it was even fun to WORK there but now it is a button down "fancy" establishment which is not what the business was originally based on. The new ownership is harsh and rude to all except for her favorites that just wander around or sit there. I am sorry to say the old Alexanders is officially dead. The new regime is merely a shadow of its former self.

My family and I have been going to Alexander's for every occasion we could ever make up since I was a child. I am now 39. The staff has always been wonderful and the food always fantastic. The only trouble for me is I live in Colorado now. But come home twice a year and travel 1hr. one way just to experience this gem. I have traveled everywhere in search of the Alexanders experience and always feel a bit homesick... My favorite The white pizza, chicken parmesan and of course the spumoni with clariot sauce. Yum ! Cant wait until June !!

I don't know what has happened in the last year or so but I can tell you that the food for all four of us was not cooked properly. How do you undercook pasta? Another was overcooked in a sauce dish. The staff and manager were unresponsive to criticism. The place smells old and mustly.. The restaurant could use a good cleaning and airing out as it smells musty and there are webs on the decorations. Forget desert--it tasted like it had been there a while. The parking lot is often empty The bathroom was dirty, especially on the floor in the corners, and smelled of urine. Horribly unhelpful and they will lose a lot of business from not knowing what good will is in the restaurant business--I grew up in a family run restaurant in MA. Money down the dirty toilet. A terrible experience. Open the windows and break out the lysol!!!

I live near this restaurant and FYI--it changed hands for those who haven't been there in a while. What a difference a couple of years makes. The management was exceptionally rude to us when we voiced our concern about the food, poor service and new management policies. I could not understand the reason for the huge discrepancy in food and attitude from one visit to the prior visit--until I found out that it had been sold. In short, the place that I liked is gone. On another occasion, I sat to eat and was greated with the smell of stale air and plastic. The restaurant could use a good cleaning and airing out as it smells musty. The waitress was unfriendly and when our pasta was overcooked, we were told that it would not be redone. The parking lot is often empty and when I asked management to deal with my poorly cooked meal, she claimed she had other customers. WHERE/ The bathroom was dirty, especially on the floor in the corners, and smelled of urine. There are cobwebs on the decorations in the dining room--probably because there isn't that great a turn over. The pasta was limp and the sauce was mediocre. The most unfriendly restaurant crew I have ever met. Limited desert menu--and the cake was bland and dry. A terrible experience. I regret that I can't find one positive thing to say about this place.

My family has been going to Alexanders for nearly 30 years now! They have watched my brother and I grow up and soon we will be bringing toddlers of our own. The food is excellent and service has always been wonderful. We highly recommend the White Fontina Cheese Pizza, veal and fried artichoke hearts. The only drawback for me is that I am currently living in VA and can not go back as often as I'd like. Good Italian food is sorely missed here in the south. Can't wait to visit again soon!

I went to this restaurant seeking a wonderful time out with my wife. Though we sat right down, the waitress was really rude. When we ordered the meal my wife asked a question on the menu and when the food was served, it was wrong. She told the waitress who then blamed her. She said she would fix it, but after 20 minutes the waitress came back and said you really don't want that anymore. Well long and short, no apologizes, no good food, and still paid full price. I could go on, but instead would have been better off at Burger King. They may get it right.

This is an excellent Italian restaurant. The sauces are just great. Any dish you choose from seafood, veal, chicken or pasta you can't be disappointed. The white pizza is excellent. Service is friendly. Dress is casual.

Great Italian american dining at a very reasonable cost. Service is Ultra Friendly, and the food is divine. Some favorites are the Brocolli in oil and garlic, eggplant parm, chicken parm, white pizza., I could go on and on, The only small drawback is the lighting is just a little too dark,
This is a great place to bring a group out for a great dining experience!
