      .

I'm writing about unethical vehicle inspection procedures used by Pep-Boys inc. located on South Willow street Manchester N.H.
In April of 2011, after the initial inspection, I was presented a list of repair items that was needed for the vehicle to pass inspection. After returning home and doing my own mechanical work I discovered that all the parts that they recommended to be replaced were in fact within manufacturers specifications. The items were a left front rotor and a lower front ball joint. The service advisor told me the failure was due to gouging and could not give me an accurate description of what the failure tolerances were, in fact, didn't give any measurements what so ever. They told me that resurfacing the rotor would be fine. I measured the rotor at 1.158" with a .012" gouge around the braking surface.
I returned the very next day to have the one rotor serviced, (which they gave me a coupon for) and they informed me that it was not serviceable and that the first diagnosis was incorrect. Once again, they could not substantiate the claim with any data and did not supply me with the specification tolerances for the rotor. They never measured it.
After having the rotor resurfaced by another brake installer, I reinstalled it on my vehicle and returned the vehicle for the reinspection. At the reinspection the rotor then measured 1.093", .030" over the discard value of 1.063". They reluctantly passed the vehicle for inspection stating "It barely passed, the rotor is .001" over the discard value. This value is as thinner that a human hair. They subsequently passed the ball joint that had not been replaced.
This company seems to be in a position of taking advantage of the unknowing public. They expect that no one will question there diagnosis. They are changing parts that are within tolerances and without supplying any data to corroborate the diagnosis. Please reiterate to the larger inspection stations that this unethical treatment is not acceptable.

      .

I found their prices to be through the roof compared to the surrounding auto parts stores in the area. The price for their auto repair was just ridiculous. before they do ANYTHINg to your vehicle, they do a computerized diagnostics, which they charge almost $80.00 for. That is BEFORE they will do ANYTHING to your car. I think that is uncalled for, because half the time it really doesnt need that machine. If they need that machine to tell them whats wrong with your vehicle, then they need new mechanics.
