I agree with the previous review. Asking mechanics to take the time to seriously inspect your car for issues is not going to be free! When you go see a doctor and he/she says you don't have anything wrong do you expect to walk out of there without paying? If you're lucky you'll get a $30 co-pay and the doctor gets $100 from your insurance! These mechanics have years of experience and really know what they're doing, and they deserve to get paid a decent wage for their work. If you go there you'll see that you're dealing with real honest people. I have brought more than one junker of a car to them and they have always given me fair, affordable prices. They also aren't pushy if you don't want to spend a lot of money, they respect your decision of what you want done to the car. They also never sugar coat the damage. There's nothing worse than being told by a mechanic that your car will be fine after a $200 fix only to find out a month later that it needs hundreds of dollars more in work done! DVG is thorough and they provide excellent long term service for your car.
Durham Village is a very good shop to bring your car. I like how all these reviews say that they brought there car to them and had nothing done but were still charged. This is how garages work if a mechanic looks at your car no matter if you want it to be fixed or not they are still spending time looking at the vehicle and therefor you have to pay them for their time. This is a small price to pay compared to most garages that charge a minimum of 1 hour no matter what they do and that can be around $90. So please stop complaining about having to pay $25 - 30 its not fair to the mechanics that work there, they have to be paid for their time somehow. Overall it is a very TRUSTWORTHY garage and i will always bring my car there if i have the choice.
I'm a college student at UNH, and Durham Village Garage has been a life save on more then one occasion. Overall, they have saved me about $400 off the cost of going to other places. They have always been friendly and very accommodating of my specific situations (A.K.A" i'm going out of town and I need to get my car checked", or "my car is broke and I need it today!")

I think they are the best garage around for the value. I have taken a volvo 240 and two honda civics to them and they have dealt with every problem in a reasonable way.
The best thing about them is that they are a real garage, seemingly ran by the same family for 100 years. The guys in the office will talk to you about your car's problem and are willing to figure out options.
By far the best experience I had with them was when my Vovlo died on the side of the road, about 2 miles from their shop (electrical problem). I had a bike on the car so I could ride to work, so I called them and told them where the car was and they did the rest. I can't remember the problem, but it was fairly minor. I remember the bill was less than $100, including the tow. They could have charged me anything to pull my car off the road, but the did not. They won a customer for life.
Lastly, I would read their negative reviews with a grain of salt since they are located very near the University of New Hampshire. I think many students take their cars there and since they are inexperienced with mechanics, I think most don't know how good the garage is. I have shopped around in the area for about 6 years and I think they are the best value choice.
For outstanding service, talk to Dan at Exeter Motor Works - but expect to pay about twice as much.

They're hands down the best garage I've ever worked with. I don't think I've ever trusted mechanics so much as I trust these guys. My fiancee and I have both had our cars there for various reasons. We're moving soon and only hope to find another local garage that's even half as dependable.

I live in Durham, and in addition to having my car inspected there, I've had to call these guys for help during a couple of emergencies. I've never any any of the problems mentioned in the other reviews. I've always known ahead of time what the problem was, and how much it was going to cost to have it fixed. One time when I was broken down with a flat tire, they came out to me twice, and stayed with me until I could drive my car back to their shop. They only charged me $15 for 2 roadside trips, and then only for the cost of the new tire I needed. That's pretty reasonable huh? Maybe they've had a couple of employees in the past that weren't as helpful, but overall, my experiences have never been unpleasant or cost more than what I absolutely needed.
Travelled from Buffalo , NY to NH and stayed at the Holday Inn across the street from this shop. As I tried to start my car for my return-trip home, I heard a "pop" and when I checked..the battery caps had blown off! The guys at the garage were very friendly, hand-carried a new battery to my car, installed it and later checked the electrical system after the battery was installed and I drove back to the shop. Total bill?...only the cost of the battery ! No extra charge! Great service especially for this out-of-towner !!
PROS: frirendly, efficient, value priced
CONS: none

That might sound like a good thing, but it isn't when it comes to car repair. When I asked them to call me before they installed a part if it was expensive, they didn't! They installed it and it was too expensive and of course I had to pay! This happened to a friend of mine too. I guess I don't get how hard it can be to pick up the phone to check. That is what they take our number for, right? I probably would have said yes if they had asked, but I want to make the decisions.
My daughter attends UNH and has occasionally had car issues that I can't fix due to the distance. I was leery about sending a young girl to a garage without someone mechanically knowledgable to accompany her but these guys have been great. Professional, courteous, timely, very accomodating. They aren't the least expensive option but they are very fair and they are competent. Can't ask for more.
I have been going here for about 10 yrs and I have received nothing but the best service every single time. No other garage or dealership that I've dealt with has ever taken the time to really explain what's wrong with my car when it needs to be repaired, they just give me a quick run down and a huge bill. At DVG they often bring me out to my car, point out the parts that are broken, and explain to me how they will fix them, and give me a great price for it. I had a dealership quote me $1500 for a repair, then had DVG quote me $700 to fix the same thing, and I got it back FIXED unlike the dozen or so times I had repairs done at dealerships and got the car back still broken. I have never felt overcharged or scammed at this place. I feel instead like they're looking out for me, warning me when I let my oil change go too long, or letting me know what parts on my car might go in the near future. They have treated me the same whether I'm bringing a junker car to be reparied or a brand new one (again, very unlike dealerships). They are a true family business and take obvious pride in their service. I recommend them to all my friends in the area.
I have been going to DVG for years. From day one I have been treated with respect. My cars are the best they have ever been now that I go to DVG. DVG always finds my problems and always fixes them. No waste, no surprises. Always on budget and very affordable. I highly recommend DVG to everyone who needs quality service at an affordable cost.
I have always had a good experience with Durham Village Garage. Over the past 8 years I have been there many times. Yes, there are some places that are less expensive, but you have to drive 10 miles out of town to get to those places - so then you either need to take the day off work or you need to have a friend drive with you - very inconvenient.
Durham Village Garage stands by their work, and if a part fails then they negotiate with the parts supplier and it gets fixed free for you. Good people.
Pros: Responsible, convenient, price
I recommend checking out Affordable and Dependable Auto Repair of Durham, NH. Their shop rate is $50.00 and hr and they are very honest and very affordable. \r

Pros: Great Deal, Reliable
I live in Durham and I brought my car there (newer) and they fixed things that did not need to be fixed and over-charged me. Recently I brought a car back (different, but still newer) and they did it again, but this time I said no, and they still charged me $35 for nothing!!! Overpriced! And I brought my car to a different place and they said' What, that doesn't need to be done!', you're fine. Seriously, not to be trusted. I will never, ever go there again. I am all about things getting done that NEED to get done, for a REASONABLE price, but you really can't trust this place. If there is nothing wrong, they will 'find' something and overcharge you, and apparently if you say no, they still charge you. YOu are better off going to a mainstream place (dealership, meinike, etc.) the quotes are free and they will show you why you need something done, if it does. Some transparency and customer service is nice. Oh...and it won't cost you one bit more!
horrible customer service...leaves your lights on so your battery dies...doesn't care about unhappy customers...OVERPRICED!!! do NOT go here. they think they can scam college kids, think again. Always have an attitude. YOU ARE HORRIBLE
Cons: EVERYTHING
