I was on a mission to somehow get old but never-been-listened to 78s recorded on CD so my brother could add them as a sound track to an anniversary video. I called Pitchfork Records in Concord, and they couldn't do it there but recommended Richard at the Music Connection in Manchester. I called that day, and Richard said, "Sure, come on in and I'll do it while you wait." I went the next day, and found the store tucked away next to the 99 restaurant, across from and just south of the Mall entrance. Richard was helping a customer over the phone, looking through Johnny Cash albums and giving the titles of what he had.

Then he helped me out, taking the 78s and playing them, while recording them onto a CD, which he provided. He suggested I write down the titles of the songs as he took off one record and put on the next, which was very helpful. He must have spent at least 1/2 hour on this project. Meanwhile, another older gentleman came in who has a show on community access TV -- he sings old songs, and takes call-in requests. He and Richard chatted, but Richard always was paying attention to the recording task at hand.

I hadn't asked how much he would charge, and when we went up to the register, I was amazed when he said, "$10". That just did not seem right, so I gave him $20. The man clearly loves what he does.

My brother was very pleased with the quality of the CD, and it was great hearing the music accompany the video.

I've been shopping at Rich Gesner's store, the Music Connection, for years. Rich has been collecting and selling vinyl all his life (as well as holding a teaching position earlier in life). He's a terrific guy to just go in and talk to and his store has 60,000 albums and 30,000 singles. Not a lot of rare stuff but a great variety of interesting things to add to a collection.

A real record store in the sense of vinyl, Music Connection harkens back to a day when the compact disc wasn't even dreamt of. Though they do sell some CD's (with a huge collection of GG Allin merchandise), the store is full of new and used records. The owner is an older man who is very helpful and personable. The hours are a little short because he's the only employee, I believe. Still, I recommend this to any vinyl junkie or DJ who's looking for a new place to haunt.
