.

We were given a wheelbarrow as a house warming gift. Of course, I had just bought one the week before. So, the giver gave us the receipt and we drove 15 miles to go return the wheelbarrow. We figured we would buy stuff for the garden instead--potting soil, tomato cages, tools, etc. When I told the guy at the counter we wanted to return the gift, the guy asked for the debit card it was charged to. I explained, again, that it was a gift and we didn't have the card. Then the manager/owner/rude man came over and explained to us that he couldn't give us a refund because we didn't "legally own that wheelbarrow". Um, yes, we did! We got it as a gift, so it was ours. He said he would be out $27.99 if he gave us cash because the woman who bought it might cancel her card and he wouldn't get the money.
At that point, I said "We are going to get other stuff, can't we just get an exchange?".
The rude man said "Yeah, that would work....No, no, I would still be out if the card gets cancelled."
Huh? Wouldn't he be out if the card were cancelled and we kept the wheelbarrow? My husband wanted to just leave the thing and go home at that point. The casher who had no idea how to deal with this suggested we call the woman who bought it to get her to come in with her card. Yeah, right, she lives in MASSACHUSSETTS!
Finally, the rude man realized he was making this issue really bad, blocking his cash paying customers, and so he gave us the cash back. He grumbled the whole time and did make me give my name and phone number.
Normally I like to frequent small hardware stores owned by local people, but this was NUTS! I say STAY AWAY just because the guy was so rude and confusing. We ended up going to Cole Gardens and spent $70 on garden stuff. So, that guy missed the boat.
