They just added a 25 cent surcharge on credit card transactions. Really in 2011 a credit card surcharge, gas stations don't even do that any more. I am moving on.

A very nice relaxed atmosphere. I like hanging out at this little coffee shop. They have great coffee and it's a nice place to just relax.

Have to agree with a previous poster on this one... if you can ignore the baristas this is a great experience with a good selection of coffees, pastries and the like along with pleasant outdoor seating. Perhaps the customer service is a bit of the old Abercrombie and Fitch Syndrome at play. Wouldn't stop me from going back however.

Pros: Fantastic selection of pastries and coffee

Cons: Poor customer Service

This is the best coffee on the seacoast with a great variety of roasts and flavors. The lattes are amazing and they know how to make a good cappucinno as well. The staff is efficient and friendly even when the line is out the door. I would highly reccomend Breaking New Grounds to anyone looking for a great coffee and a nice atmosphere to enjoy it in.

I visit this shop 4/5 days a week. I love their iced coffee and the service is usually fast and friendly. I just wished that they would use recyclable carry out cups. I will be bringing my own travel cup from now on but for the many people who wont do that it's a shame they can't just use recyclable plastic.

Famously curt, rude, and obnoxious staff. Fantastic coffee and cookies, but have been treated so rudely that I will not go back. Five stars on the coffee ... owner needs to think about training the staff and managers in customer service. Known though Portsmouth for poor cust service unfortunately :(

Pros: good poeple watching spot, good coffee

Cons: a little overpriced but still good

Breaking New Grounds has the best coffee in Portsmouth. Though the price for a small non-fat latte is $3.00 for a single, I still say every penny is worth it!
Not to mention that the workers always look happy (even at chatotic moments) and they don't seem fake.
The muffins are incredible, you just have to get there early enough in the morning to have a good selection. Sometimes the lines are ridiculous and it can get extremely busy at lunch hour too. The cafe itself has local artwork which is inspiring and as a writer I found the atmosphere helps the creative buzz.
The outdoor seating in warmer months generates crowds and like any European setting, perfect for people watching.
Breaking New Grouns IS breaking new grounds.

As soon as you walk into Breaking New Grounds, you feel comfy. The walls look like different shades of coffee colors, which gives the business a relaxed feel. The atmosphere is not drowned out by loud colors. They have okay pricing at about $4 a cup. The coffee "for here" is served in the typical wide white mug, similar in shape to a rice bowl. There are tables and chairs set up inside and outside. The available seating outside makes up the better half of the seating and the better half of the atmosphere. You can sit around outside, taking in the culture, do some people watching, and bask in the glow on the sun. Nothing is rushed here, and the customer service is genuinely nice and helpful. They also offer two frequent buyer cards. After 10 cups of coffee or so, you get one cup free. As well as, after buying 10 pounds of coffee beans, you get 1 pound free.

PROS: Outdoor seating

BNG has the best coffee in the Seacoast. Forget *$'s or any of the others.

They have the best variety in coffees, blended drinks, teas and juice offerings.

The baked goods are rather pedestrian - ranging from plain bagels to Alden Merrill-style cakes. One bright spot is their cookies.

Several round tables dot the restaurant, which can have lines out the door on a cool summer evening, or chilly winter day.

And, they are local.
