Unbelievable. New to town, I took my bikes in for a safety check and suggested I might be interested in buying a bike. Two days later, the mechanic calls me back to say my bikes are done @$29/each plus a tire replacement @$20. Quick service, reasonable prices. But wait...

First, I had explicitly asked to me consulted before any work was done on the bikes beyond the safety checks. When I expressed my concern to the owner, he gave me a blank look about the tire and said "we don't call about something like that." So, spend my money without my consent, and then he says "we can take it off if you want." Same emotionless, automaton expression.

I then inquire about what the safety checks achieved, what they found, etc. Mechanic says "we inspected the bikes." Nothing else. Silence. I push further- no information. I say, "I'm really not very pleased here, can't you give me more information." The owner snidely (sign of life!) that "we just told you what we did." At my limit, I say, "congratulations, nice customer service. I just moved here, and you already lost me as a customer."

What ensues is a strange eruption by a guy who is clearly, clearly troubled deep down in side. The owner explodes at me, calls me the "biggest ahole we've seen yet," and gets very macho in my face. I hand him my card and say, "are you going to take my $78 and get me out of here?" He calls me a "fking ahole" and tells me to get my bikes loaded while he runs my card. I sign and leave.

Welcome to Durham Bike!

These guys have the personalities of sandpaper- until you piss them off by questioning them, and then the owner goes postal. Now, I'm no shrinking violet and I certainly expressed my expectations for more information and customer service, but I was not rude or derogatory to him. I never swore or raised my voice.

There are a half-dozen bike shops within a 10 minute drive of this guy. I'm glad for that, because he won't be in business much longer if he treats new customers like this regularly.

I bought a bike from here thinking I probably was paying too much. No way! I checked later online and the price was very reasonable. In addition, they adjusted everything on my bike for FREE the first year. Then they give me great deals on extra parts and always install them for free. They also have an air pump available when they are open and will put in the air for free. And they always check my chain to see if it needs oil. FREE again! This is a great local bike shop. They love riding and they want everyone else to love riding too without being overbearing or too technical. It is the Everyperson's bike shop.

PROS: Great service, great prices, GREAT location
CONS: none!
