Cocheco Valley Humane Society is a caring facility who really try to find homes for all the animals there. They are not a wealthy shelter and need monetary donations as well as donations of animal food and some human volunteers. Back in the 90's our family donated much time and fostering for this shelter.. We also adopted some cats and pitbull terriers. The pitbulls we adopted were the best dogs we have ever known. This shelter has stepped up to the plate in accepting and trying to place pitbull terriers for adoption. God Bless them. sylvia W.

Pros: Caring facility with hard workers

Cons: They need monetary support and animal food donations

I used to provide supplies and exercise the dogs at CVHS back in 1985, just a few months after they opened as a no-kill shelter. They still operate on donations; given that, one can hardly expect fine lodgings. I adopted a great dog from here, and I've never had a bad experience either as a volunteer or as a pet adopter. The animals are well-cared for despite the age and condition of the building. (Keep in mind that the more money spent on accommodation, the more likely a shelter will have to utilize euthanasia to offset the cost.)

CVHS used to shelter livestock as well (I recall a very friendly goat named Merlin who lodged there for a while), but apparently the cost was too great, so they now deal only with domestic pets.

They operate with donations and volunteers and do the best they can for the animals with what they have. Case in point: They have many rabbits, some of which have been with them for over a year. They pay the $300 - $400 fee to have a rabbit spayed or neutered when adopted, while only charging a $45 adoption fee. They selflessly absorb the huge cost. Please give pets at this shelter a chance.

Pros: Shelter keeps healthy pets until adopted

Cons: Need is greater than donations and funds received

Also @ Anna: last I checked they're a non-profit in need of some assistance, and not a business. They might not be the most tip-top shelter but they help animals as best as they can, with the resources they have. Your suggestion to go elsewhere is incredibly unhelpful. If you really have a problem why don't you donate some time or funds, or better, adopt an animal out of that situation?

We did go there last week. I printed out our application ahead of time, since they're incredibly busy and didn't have a lot of time to talk to us. True, the place is basically a trailer, but the animals looked healthy and stable. The dogs are paired up in concrete stalls with food, toys, and bedding. Volunteers were in and out feeding the dogs and the kitties, and the rabbits were outside enjoying some fresh grass and sunshine. There were a lot of visitors that day and it seemed like they had their hands full.

I've been keeping an eye on the pet listings for a few months now, and Cocheco seems to do a pretty decent turnover. I hope that all the animals are finding good homes, but until then it seems like the people here are working really hard to help the animals in their care.

@Anna Or you know, try to help them make it better or at least look there to see if there's an appropriate animal for you that you can thus get out of the horrible conditions.

It's a county-run shelter dearly in need of financial support and improvement--it's not like they're looking for your "business" to make a profit.

I would NEVER recommend this shelter to anyone. I can not believe the animals are allowed to live in these conditions. It is a tin trailer and feels like one inside to. The staff is rude and not willing to help. Go someplace else before you give them your business!!

This is an older, county run shelter. They have a new director who we hope will bring about lots of good improvements. The staff varies in knowledge. Aren't always careful who they adopt out to.
